Marine renewable energy (MRE) harnesses ocean-based resources such as waves, tides, currents, and thermal or salinity gradients for sustainable power generation. It has the potential to complement existing renewable resources, support remote communities, and contribute to decarbonization efforts. However, understanding the hydrodynamic forces created by MRE devices and their impacts on marine life is critical for responsible deployment. To address these concerns, advanced sensor devices, including the Marine Sensor Fish (MSF), Sensor Fish Mini (SF Mini), and Flexible Sensor Fish (FSF), were developed to measure interactions between aquatic organisms and MRE systems. This paper details the design, manufacturing, calibration, and field deployment of these sensor suites, highlighting their ability to capture key physical stressors such as shear forces, pressure changes, and collision impacts. The MSF successfully evaluated turbine interactions at a tidal turbine in the Salish Sea, capturing data on turbulence, collision impact, and pressure gradients. The SF Mini validated hydrodynamic conditions in scaled hydraulic models, supporting computational fluid dynamics simulations. The FSF, with its flexible silicone body, measured species-specific impacts in turbulent environments. Background: Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is under investigation as a treatment for adults with major depression. Previous research has suggested that MST has antidepressant efficacy comparable to that of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), but with greater cognitive safety. The objective of the study was to compare the neurocognitive outcomes of patients receiving an acute course of MST with the outcomes of those receiving ECT for the treatment of major depressive episode., Methods: This was a between-subjects, double-masked, randomized, multicenter clinical trial. Seventy-three participants with a severe major depressive episode were enrolled and randomly assigned to treatment with MST (n = 35) or ultra-brief pulse right unilateral ECT (n = 38). The main outcome was change in performance from baseline to the end of acute treatment on multiple neurocognitive measures., Results: Compared with patients who received ECT, patients who received MST had superior cognitive outcomes up to 72 hours posttreatment. Specifically, following MST treatment, there was significant improvement in fine motor dexterity (p = .017) and no significant change in cognitive domains of attention, verbal fluency, executive function, or verbal learning and memory. In contrast, following treatment with ECT, patients demonstrated significantly worse performance on measures of verbal fluency (p < .001), executive function (p = .038), and verbal memory retention (p < .001). Autobiographical memory consistency decreased significantly following treatment with both ECT (p < .001) and MST, although the magnitude of change was greater for ECT., Conclusions: The study findings confirm previous work and provide new evidence supporting the enhanced cognitive safety of MST relative to ECT. Castration is widely used in poultry and livestock to enhance fat metabolism and improve the flavor, tenderness and juiciness of meat. However, the genetic regulatory mechanism underlying castration consequences have not been clarified. To investigate the key metabolites affecting the quality of capons and the key regulatory mechanisms, Qingyuan partridge roosters were subjected to castration. Metabolic profiling was used to detect differential metabolites in the breast muscle of both capon and control groups. Additionally, an integrative analysis of transcriptomics and proteomics was conducted to explore the genetic regulation mechanisms influencing meat quality. The results indicated that the muscle fiber density and shear force of capons was lower than that of normal chickens, and the fat percentage of capon group (CAM) was higher than control group (COM). The expression of the metabolite inostine-5'-monophosphate (IMP) was lower in capons, and lipid metabolites (PC (10:0/10:0), PC (6:0/13:1), LPC 22:6, LPC 18:2, LPE 18:1, LPE 20:4) were higher in capons. Metabolic pathways were found to be a common signaling pathway in all omics. Glutamate-ammonia ligase (GLUL), acetyl-CoA carboxylase beta (ACACB), 1-acylglycerol-3-phosphate O-acyltransferase 2 (AGPAT2), 4-hydroxy-2-oxoglutarate aldolase 1 (HOGA1) and glutathione S-transferase alpha 2 (GSTA2) regulate the expression of citric acid, arachidonic acid, palmitic acid, isocitric acid, and betaine. Background: Modeling brain stimulation at the microscopic scale may reveal new paradigms for various stimulation modalities., Objective: We present the largest map to date of extracellular electric field distributions within a layer L2/L3 mouse primary visual cortex brain sample. This was enabled by the automated analysis of serial section electron microscopy images with improved handling of image defects, covering a volume of 250 × 140 × 90 μm³., Methods: The map was obtained by applying a uniform brain stimulation electric field at three different polarizations and accurately computing microscopic field perturbations using the boundary element fast multipole method. We used the map to identify the effect of microscopic field perturbations on the activation thresholds of individual neurons. Previous relevant studies modeled a macroscopically homogeneous cortical volume., Result: Our result shows that the microscopic field perturbations - an 'electric field spatial noise' with a mean value of zero - only modestly influence the macroscopically predicted stimulation field strengths necessary for neuronal activation. The thresholds do not change by more than 10 % on average., Conclusion: Under the stated limitations and assumptions of our method, this result essentially justifies the conventional theory of "invisible" neurons embedded in a macroscopic brain model for transcranial magnetic and transcranial electrical stimulation. However, our result is solely sample-specific and is only relevant to this relatively small sample with 396 neurons. It largely neglects the effect of the microcapillary network. Objective: To use ultra-widefield swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (UWF SS-OCTA) to evaluate the choroidal features of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and type 1 macular neovascularization (MNV) attributable to central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC)., Method: A cross-sectional research was carried out to examine patients with type 1 MNV due to CSC (50 eyes) and nAMD (98 eyes) utilizing UWF SS-OCTA examinations. The scan procedure covered a vertical 20 mm × horizontal 24 mm region with 9 subfields. A typical set of 68 healthy eyes was used for comparison. The effects of different diagnoses on choroidal parameters were assessed using covariance tests, using gender and age as variables., Results: The research showed that all choroidal characteristics were age-related (all p < 0.05). The calculated marginal averages of choroidal thickness (ChT) and choroidal volume (CV) in the central area were substantially lower in the nAMD group than in the CSC group and the normal group after age differences were taken into account (all p < 0.05). In both the superotemporal and temporal areas, the CSC group had a greater choroidal vascular index (CVI) compared to the nAMD group (p < 0.05). Additionally, the CSC group had a greater temporal area choriocapillaris density (CCD) than the nAMD group (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: At the choroidal level, type 1 MNV due to CSC and nAMD may be distinguished by UWF SS-OCTA. Compared to the nAMD affected eyes, the CSC affected eyes had increased ChT, CV, CVI, and CCD in several areas. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and magnetic seizure therapy (MST) are effective in the treatment of medication-resistant depression. Determining the stimulus frequency resulting in the lowest seizure threshold could produce fewer adverse effects by reducing the overall stimulus intensity. To determine the optimal frequency for seizure induction, four male rhesus macaques were titrated with an increasing number of pulses at fixed frequencies ranging from 5 to 240 pulses per second (pps) using ultrabrief-pulse right-unilateral ECT and circular-coil-on-vertex MST. The seizure threshold dependence on stimulus frequency was similar for ECT and MST. While higher frequencies required progressively shorter trains to induce a seizure, the middle frequency range was associated with the fewest pulses (and hence the least charge and energy), with a minimum at 16 pps and similarly low thresholds for 10 and 25 pps. The number of pulses at seizure threshold increased markedly at lower and higher frequencies. The lowest stimulus frequencies, 5 and 10 pps, were associated with the greatest ictal power measured by electroencephalography. While this study did not assess efficacy or side effects, the results highlight the significance of stimulus frequency for seizure induction, suggest efficient titration schedules that minimize exposure to the electrical stimulus, and can inform studies to assess the impact on clinical outcomes.

Tobacco-related deaths remain the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-about 11% of those receiving care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-have triple the risk of developing tobacco use disorder (TUD). The most efficacious strategies being used at the VA for smoking cessation only result in a 23% abstinence rate, and veterans with PTSD only achieve a 4.5% abstinence rate. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop more effective treatments for smoking cessation. Recent studies suggest the insula is integrally involved in the neurocircuitry of TUD. Thus, we propose a feasibility phase II randomized controlled trial (RCT) to study a form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) called intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS). iTBS has the advantage of allowing for a patterned form of stimulation delivery that we will administer at 90% of the subject's resting motor threshold (rMT) applied over a region in the right post-central gyrus most functionally connected to the right posterior insula. We hypothesize that by increasing functional connectivity between the right post-central gyrus and the right posterior insula, withdrawal symptoms and short-term smoking cessation outcomes will improve. Fifty eligible veterans with comorbid TUD and PTSD will be randomly assigned to active-iTBS + cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) + nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) (n = 25) or sham-iTBS + CBT + NRT (n = 25). The primary outcome, feasibility, will be determined by achieving a recruitment of 50 participants and retention rate of 80%. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) treatment protocols targeting the right dlPFC have been effective in reducing anxiety symptoms comorbid with depression. However, the mechanism behind these effects is unclear. Further, it is unclear whether these results generalize to non-depressed individuals. We conducted a series of studies aimed at understanding the link between anxiety potentiated startle and the right dlPFC, following a previous study suggesting that continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to the right dlPFC can make people more anxious. Based on these results we hypothesized that intermittent TBS (iTBS), which is thought to have opposing effects on plasticity, may reduce anxiety when targeted at the same right dlPFC region. In this double-blinded, cross-over design, 28 healthy subjects underwent 12 study visits over a 4-week period. During each of their 2 stimulation weeks, they received four 600 pulse iTBS sessions (2/day), with a post-stimulation testing session occurring 24 h following the final iTBS session. One week they received active stimulation, one week they received sham. Stimulation weeks were separated by a 1-week washout period and the order of active/sham delivery was counterbalanced across subjects. During the testing session, we induced anxiety using the threat of unpredictable shock and measured anxiety potentiated startle. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, subjects showed increased startle reactivity following active compared to sham stimulation. These results replicate work from our two previous trials suggesting that TMS to the right dlPFC increases anxiety potentiated startle, independent of both the pattern of stimulation and the timing of the post stimulation measure. Although these results confirm a mechanistic link between right dlPFC excitability and startle, capitalizing upon this link for the benefit of patients will require future exploration., (© 2024. Abstract: Attempts to dissociate electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) therapeutic efficacy from cognitive side effects of ECT include modifying electrode placement, but traditional electrode placements employing 2 large electrodes are inherently nonfocal, limiting the ability to selectively engage targets associated with clinical benefit while avoiding nontargets associated with adverse side effects. Limited focality represents a technical limitation of conventional ECT, and there is growing evidence that the spatial distribution of the ECT electric fields induced in the brain drives efficacy and side effects. Computational models can be used to predict brain current flow patterns for existing and novel ECT montages. Using finite element method simulations (under quasi-static, nonadaptive assumptions, 800-mA total current), the electric fields generated in the superficial cortex and subcortical structures were predicted for the following traditional ECT montages (bilateral temporal, bifrontal, right unilateral) and experimental montages (focal electrically administered seizure therapy, lateralized high-definition [HD]-ECT, unilateral 4 × 1-ring HD-ECT, bilateral 4 × 1-ring HD-ECT, and a multipolar HD-ECT). Peak brain current density in regions of interest was quantified. Conventional montages (bilateral bifrontal, right unilateral) each produce distinct but diffuse and deep current flow. Focal electrically administered seizure therapy and lateralized HD-ECT produce unique, lateralized current flow, also impacting specific deep regions. A 4 × 1-ring HD-ECT restricts current flow to 1 (unilateral) or 2 (bilateral) cortical regions. Multipolar HD-ECT shows optimization to a specific target set. Introduction: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains a critical intervention for treatment-resistant depression (MDD), yet its neurobiological underpinnings are not fully understood. This pilot study aims to investigate changes in loudness dependence of auditory evoked potentials (LDAEP), a proposed biomarker of serotonergic activity, in patients undergoing ECT., Methods: High-resolution magnetoencephalography (MEG) was utilized to measure LDAEP in nine depressed patients receiving right unilateral ECT. We hypothesized that ECT would reduce the LDAEP slope, reflecting enhanced serotonergic neurotransmission. Depression severity and cognitive performance were assessed using the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS 24 ) and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), respectively., Results: Contrary to our hypothesis, findings indicated a significant increase in LDAEP post-ECT ( t 8 = 3.17, p = .013). The increase in LDAEP was not associated with changes in depression severity or cognitive performance., Discussion: The observed increase in LDAEP suggests a more complex interaction between ECT and neurobiological systems, rather than a direct reflection of serotonergic neurotransmission. Potential mechanisms for this increase include ECT's impact on serotonergic, dopaminergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic receptor activity, neuroplasticity involving brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and inflammatory modulators such as TNF-α. Objective. The transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coil induces an electric field that diminishes rapidly upon entering the brain. This presents a challenge in achieving focal stimulation of a deep brain structure. Neuronal elements, including axons, dendrites, and cell bodies, exhibit specific time constants. When exposed to repetitive TMS pulses at a high frequency, there is a cumulative effect on neuronal membrane potentials, resulting in temporal summation. This study aims to determine whether TMS pulse train at high-frequency and subthreshold intensity could induce a suprathreshold response. Approach. As a proof of concept, we developed a TMS machine in-house that could consistently output pulses up to 250 Hz, and performed experiments on 22 awake rats to test whether temporal summation was detectable under pulse trains at 100, 166, or 250 Hz. Main results. Results revealed that TMS pulses at 55% maximum stimulator output (MSO, peak d I /d t = 68.5 A/ μ s at 100% MSO, pulse width = 48 μ s) did not induce motor responses with either single pulses or pulse trains. Similarly, a single TMS pulse at 65% MSO failed to evoke a motor response in rats; however, a train of TMS pulses at frequencies of 166 and 250 Hz, but not at 100 Hz, successfully triggered motor responses and MEP signals, suggesting a temporal summation effect dependent on both pulse intensities and pulse train frequencies. Significance. We propose that the temporal summation effect can be leveraged to design the next-generation focal TMS system: by sequentially driving multiple coils at high-frequency and subthreshold intensity, areas with the most significant overlapping E-fields undergo maximal temporal summation effects, resulting in a suprathreshold response., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

In this study, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation was applied to either the right inferior frontal junction or the right inferior parietal cortex during a difficult aerial reconnaissance search task to test its capacity to improve search performance. Two stimulation strategies previously found to enhance cognitive performance were tested: The first is called "addition by subtraction," and the second condition utilizes a direct excitatory approach by applying brief trains of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation immediately before task trials. In a within-subjects design, participants were given active or sham repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation at either 1 Hz or at 1 Hz above their individual peak alpha frequency (IAF + 1, mean 11.5 Hz), delivered to either the right inferior frontal junction or the right inferior parietal cortex, both defined with individualized peak functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) activation obtained during the visual search task. Results indicated that among the 13 participants who completed the protocol, only active IAF + 1 stimulation to inferior frontal junction resulted in significant speeding of reaction time compared to sham. This site- and frequency-specific enhancement of performance with IAF + 1 repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation applied immediately prior to task trials provides evidence for the involvement of inferior frontal junction in guiding difficult visual search, and more generally for the use of online repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation directed at specific functional networks to enhance visual search performance., (Published by Oxford University Press 2024.)

The use of telemetry techniques to better understand the behavior and survival of juvenile American shad (Alosa sapidissima), as they migrate through hydropower systems, has been challenging because shad are widely known to be particularly sensitive to handling. The goal of this study was to develop a tagging protocol using a new, acoustic micro transmitter that minimizes the detrimental effects of the tagging process and maximizes post-tagging survival of juvenile American shad. Limiting out-of-water handling and the use of brackish saltwater (7.5 parts per thousand) before and after tagging improved survival for shad tagged using a simple pectoral implantation method. This protocol provides a detailed, step-by-step procedure for tagging juvenile shad with acoustic transmitters. Fish tagged using this procedure and held in the laboratory for 60 days had an 81.5% survival rate, compared to 70% for their untagged counterparts. The successful tagging and handling practices developed in this study could be applied to field telemetry studies of juvenile shad and other sensitive species.

The Stroop task is a well-established tool to investigate the influence of competing visual categories on decision making. Neuroimaging as well as rTMS studies have demonstrated the involvement of parietal structures, particularly the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), in this task. Given its reliability, the numerical Stroop task was used to compare the effects of different TMS targeting approaches by Sack and colleagues (Sack AT 2009), who elegantly demonstrated the superiority of individualized fMRI targeting. We performed the present study to test whether fMRI-guided rTMS effects on numerical Stroop task performance could still be observed while using more advanced techniques that have emerged in the last decade (e.g., electrical sham, robotic coil holder system, etc.). To do so we used a traditional reaction time analysis and we performed, post-hoc, a more advanced comprehensive drift diffusion modeling approach. Fifteen participants performed the numerical Stroop task while active or sham 10 Hz rTMS was applied over the region of the right intraparietal sulcus (IPS) showing the strongest functional activation in the Incongruent > Congruent contrast. This target was determined based on individualized fMRI data collected during a separate session. Contrary to our assumption, the classical reaction time analysis did not show any superiority of active rTMS over sham, probably due to confounds such as potential cumulative rTMS effects, and the effect of practice. Background: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been increasingly used for treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although several meta-analyses have explored its effectiveness and safety, there is no umbrella review specifically focused on rTMS for OCD. This umbrella review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and analyzed relevant meta-analyses on rTMS for OCD., Methods: Twenty-three articles were identified from PubMed, and after screening, 12 meta-analyses were included in the review. The studies analyzed in the meta-analyses ranged from 10 to 27, with total participants ranging from 282 to 791. The most commonly studied regions were the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), supplementary motor area (SMA), and orbito-frontal cortex (OFC)., Result: The majority of the meta-analyses consistently supported the effectiveness of rTMS in reducing OCD symptoms when applied to the DLPFC and SMA. Encouraging results were also observed when targeting the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) through deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS). However, there was a high level of heterogeneity in the findings of nine out of 12 meta-analyses., Conclusion: In conclusion, existing evidence suggests that rTMS targeting the DLPFC and SMA consistently reduces OCD symptoms, but targeting the mPFC and ACC through dTMS shows variable results. However, the high heterogeneity in the study findings indicates a need for further research and standardization in the field.

Background: Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) treatment response is influenced by individual variability in brain structure and function. Sophisticated, user-friendly approaches, incorporating both established functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and TMS simulation tools, to identify TMS targets are needed., Objective: The current study presents the development and validation of the Bayesian Optimization of Neuro-Stimulation (BOONStim) pipeline., Methods: BOONStim uses Bayesian optimization for individualized TMS targeting, automating interoperability between surface-based fMRI analytic tools and TMS electric field modeling. Bayesian optimization performance was evaluated in a sample dataset (N=10) using standard circular and functional connectivity-defined targets, and compared to grid optimization., Results: Bayesian optimization converged to similar levels of total electric field stimulation across targets in under 30 iterations, converging within a 5% error of the maxima detected by grid optimization, and requiring less time., Conclusions: BOONStim is a scalable and configurable user-friendly pipeline for individualized TMS targeting with quick turnaround.

The modeling of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-induced electric fields (E-fields) is a versatile technique for evaluating and refining brain targeting and dosing strategies, while also providing insights into dose-response relationships in the brain. This review outlines the methodologies employed to derive E-field estimations, covering TMS physics, modeling assumptions, and aspects of subject-specific head tissue and coil modeling. We also summarize various numerical methods for solving the E-field and their suitability for various applications. Modeling methodologies have been optimized to efficiently execute numerous TMS simulations across diverse scalp coil configurations, facilitating the identification of optimal setups or rapid cortical E-field visualization for specific brain targets. These brain targets are extrapolated from neurophysiological measurements and neuroimaging, enabling precise and individualized E-field dosing in experimental and clinical applications. This necessitates the quantification of E-field estimates using metrics that enable the comparison of brain target engagement, functional localization, and TMS intensity adjustments across subjects. The integration of E-field modeling with empirical data has the potential to uncover pivotal insights into the aspects of E-fields responsible for stimulating and modulating brain function and states, enhancing behavioral task performance, and impacting the clinical outcomes of personalized TMS interventions., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Neurostimulation devices that use rotating permanent magnets are being explored for their potential therapeutic benefits in patients with psychiatric and neurological disorders. This study aims to characterize the electric field (E-field) for ten configurations of rotating magnets using finite element analysis and phantom measurements. Various configurations were modeled, including single or multiple magnets, and bipolar or multipolar magnets, rotated at 10, 13.3, and 350 revolutions per second (rps). E-field strengths were also measured using a hollow sphere (r=9.2 cm) filled with a 0.9% sodium chloride solution and with a dipole probe. The E-field spatial distribution is determined by the magnets' dimensions, number of poles, direction of the magnetization, and axis of rotation, while the E-field strength is determined by the magnets' rotational frequency and magnetic field strength. The induced E-field strength on the surface of the head ranged between 0.0092 and 0.52 V/m. In the range of rotational frequencies applied, the induced E-field strengths were approximately an order or two of magnitude lower than those delivered by conventional transcranial magnetic stimulation. The impact of rotational frequency on E-field strength represents a confound in clinical trials that seek to tailor rotational frequency to individual neural oscillations. This factor could explain some of the variability observed in clinical trial outcomes.

The assessment of fish passage conditions in hydroelectric turbines consists of identifying and quantifying physical magnitudes leading to increased risks of injury of fish passing through turbines in operation. Such assessments are usually carried out either with the use of computer-based methods during design or with field testing of live fish and sensors passing through prototypes. A method in between consists of test rig experimentation, which is critical for testing fish-focused design concepts and offers the opportunity for implementing the most effective design measures for improved fish survivability. However, fish-related assessments in test rigs are not sufficiently documented for industrial applications. This work presents the main findings of an experimental campaign to quantify fish-related hydraulic magnitudes in a physical model of a Kaplan turbine in a commercial test rig. Two operating conditions were tested by releasing miniaturized autonomous sensor devices (termed Sensor Fish Mini) at the turbine intake flow, passing them through the runner in motion and recovering them at the draft tube exit. During passage, time series of acceleration, absolute pressure and rotational velocity were recorded. The recordings were then interpreted to determine the magnitude and likely location of hydraulic stressors hazardous to fish. The statistical tests on the reported measurements indicated that low pressure, collisions on the runner and rotations in the draft tube were not different between the two tested operating points. On the other hand, pressure drop and collision rates on the distributor differed considerably as a function of net head. The outcomes of this investigation showed that test rig evaluations of fish-related properties with Sensor Fish Mini can contribute to an evidence-based development of turbine geometries designed for providing safer passage conditions. Introduction: The effects of body mass index (BMI) on the core symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) and its implications for disease trajectory are largely unexplored., Objective: To examine whether BMI impacted hospitalization rate, medical and psychiatric comorbidities, and core symptom domains such as depression and suicidality in BD., Methods: Participants (15 years and older) were 2790 BD outpatients enrolled in the longitudinal STEP-BD study; all met DSM-IV criteria for BD-I, BD-II, cyclothymia, BD NOS, or schizoaffective disorder, bipolar subtype. BMI, demographic information, psychiatric and medical comorbidities, and other clinical variables such as bipolarity index, history of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and history of suicide attempts were collected at baseline. Longitudinal changes in Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) score, Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) score, and hospitalizations during the study were also assessed. Depending on the variable of interest, odds-ratios, regression analyses, factor analyses, and graph analyses were applied., Results: A robust increase in psychiatric and medical comorbidities was observed, particularly for baseline BMIs >35. A significant relationship was noted between higher BMI and history of suicide attempts, and individuals with BMIs >40 had the highest prevalence of suicide attempts. Obese and overweight individuals had a higher bipolarity index (a questionnaire measuring disease severity) and were more likely to have received ECT. Higher BMIs correlated with worsening trajectory of core depression symptoms and with worsening lassitude and inability to feel., Conclusions: In BD participants, elevated BMI was associated with worsening clinical features, including higher rates of suicidality, comorbidities, and core depression symptoms., (Published 2023. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) pulse amplitude, which dictates the induced electric field (E-field) magnitude in the brain, is presently fixed at 800 or 900 milliamperes (mA) without clinical or scientific rationale. We have previously demonstrated that increased E-field strength improves ECT's antidepressant effect but worsens cognitive outcomes. Amplitude-determined seizure titration may reduce the E-field variability relative to fixed amplitude ECT. In this investigation, we assessed the relationships among amplitude-determined seizure-threshold (ST a ), E-field magnitude, and clinical outcomes in older adults (age range 50 to 80 years) with depression. Subjects received brain imaging, depression assessment, and neuropsychological assessment pre-, mid-, and post-ECT. ST a was determined during the first treatment with a Soterix Medical 4×1 High Definition ECT Multi-channel Stimulation Interface (Investigation Device Exemption: G200123). Subsequent treatments were completed with right unilateral electrode placement (RUL) and 800 mA. We calculated E brain defined as the 90th percentile of E-field magnitude in the whole brain for RUL electrode placement. Twenty-nine subjects were included in the final analyses. E brain per unit electrode current, E brain /I, was associated with ST a . ST a was associated with antidepressant outcomes at the mid-ECT assessment and bitemporal electrode placement switch. E brain /I was associated with changes in category fluency with a large effect size. The relationship between ST a and E brain /I extends work from preclinical models and provides a validation step for ECT E-field modeling. Importance: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is highly effective and rapid in treating depression, but it carries a risk of significant cognitive adverse effects. Magnetic seizure therapy (MST), an investigational antidepressant treatment, may maintain the robust antidepressant efficacy of ECT while substantially reducing adverse effects due to its enhanced focality and weaker stimulation strength; however, previous clinical trials of MST were limited by small sample sizes., Objective: To compare the antidepressant efficacy of MST vs ultrabrief pulse right unilateral (RUL) ECT., Design, Setting, and Participants: A between-participants, double-blinded, randomized clinical trial was conducted at 3 academic hospitals from June 2007 to August 2012. Adults aged 18 to 90 years who were referred for treatment with ECT, had a major depressive episode in the context of major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, and had a baseline 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-24) total score of 18 or higher were included. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 to treatment with MST or ultrabrief pulse RUL ECT. After the treatment course, patients were naturalistically followed up for up to 6 months to examine the durability of clinical effects., Interventions: Treatment with MST, applied at 100 Hz at 100% of the maximum device power for 10 seconds, or ultrabrief pulse RUL ECT, applied at 6 times seizure threshold., Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary outcome was change from baseline in HDRS-24 total score, with patients followed up for up to 6 months. A reduction of at least 50% in the HDRS-24 score indicated response, and at least a 60% decrease in the HDRS-24 score and a total score of 8 or less indicated remission., Results: Of the 73 participants (41 [56.2%] female; mean [SD] age, 48 [14.1] years), 35 were randomized to MST and 38 to ECT. Among them, 53 (72.6%) were classified as completers (29 in the MST group and 24 in the ECT group). Both MST and ECT demonstrated clinically meaningful antidepressant effects. In the intent-to-treat sample, 18 participants (51.4%) in the MST group and 16 (42.1%) in the ECT group met response criteria; 13 (37.1%) in the MST group and 10 (26.3%) in the ECT group met remission criteria. Among completers, 17 of 29 (58.6%) in the MST group and 15 of 24 (62.5%) in the ECT group met response criteria; 13 of 29 (44.8%) in the MST group and 10 of 24 (41.7%) in the ECT group met remission criteria. There was no significant difference between MST and ECT for either response or remission rates. However, the mean (SD) number of treatments needed to achieve remission was 9.0 (3.1) with MST and 6.7 (3.3) with ECT, a difference of 2.3 treatments (t71.0 = 3.1; P = .003). Both MST and ECT showed a sustained benefit over a 6-month follow-up period, again with no significant difference between them. Compared with MST, ECT had significantly longer time to orientation after treatment (threshold level: F1,56 = 10.0; P = .003) and greater severity of subjective adverse effects, particularly in the physical and cognitive domains., Conclusions and Relevance: This randomized clinical trial found that the efficacy of MST was indistinguishable from that of ultrabrief pulse RUL ECT, the safest form of ECT currently available. Objective. In our recent work pertinent to modeling of brain stimulation and neurophysiological recordings, substantial modeling errors in the computed electric field and potential have sometimes been observed for standard multi-compartment head models. The goal of this study is to quantify those errors and, further, eliminate them through an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithm. The study concentrates on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), and electroencephalography (EEG) forward problems. Approach. We propose, describe, and systematically investigate an AMR method using the boundary element method with fast multipole acceleration (BEM-FMM) as the base numerical solver. The goal is to efficiently allocate additional unknowns to critical areas of the model, where they will best improve solution accuracy. The implemented AMR method's accuracy improvement is measured on head models constructed from 16 Human Connectome Project subjects under problem classes of TES, TMS, and EEG. Errors are computed between three solutions: an initial non-adaptive solution, a solution found after applying AMR with a conservative refinement rate, and a 'silver-standard' solution found by subsequent 4:1 global refinement of the adaptively-refined model. Main results. Excellent agreement is shown between the adaptively-refined and silver-standard solutions for standard head models. AMR is found to be vital for accurate modeling of TES and EEG forward problems for standard models: an increase of less than 25% (on average) in number of mesh elements for these problems, efficiently allocated by AMR, exposes electric field/potential errors exceeding 60% (on average) in the solution for the unrefined models. Significance. This error has especially important implications for TES dosing prediction-where the stimulation strength plays a central role-and for EEG lead fields. Though the specific form of the AMR method described here is implemented for the BEM-FMM, we expect that AMR is applicable and even required for accurate electromagnetic simulations by other numerical modeling packages as well., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)

It has been suggested that aberrant excitation/inhibition (E/I) balance and dysfunctional structure and function of relevant brain networks may underlie the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the nomological network linking these constructs to quantifiable measures and mechanistically relating these constructs to behavioral symptoms of ASD is lacking. Herein we describe a within-subject, controlled, proof-of-mechanism study investigating the pathophysiology of auditory/language processing in adolescents with ASD. We utilize neurophysiological and neuroimaging techniques including magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and magnetoencephalography (MEG) metrics of language network structure and function. Additionally, we apply a single, individually targeted session of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) as an experimental probe of the impact of perturbation of the system on these neurophysiological and neuroimaging outcomes. MRS, fMRI, and MEG measures are evaluated at baseline and immediately prior to and following cTBS over the posterior superior temporal cortex (pSTC), a region involved in auditory and language processing deficits in ASD. Also, behavioral measures of ASD and language processing and DWI measures of auditory/language network structures are obtained at baseline to characterize the relationship between the neuroimaging and neurophysiological measures and baseline symptom presentation. We hypothesize that local gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate concentrations (measured with MRS), and structural and functional activity and network connectivity (measured with DWI and fMRI), will significantly predict MEG indices of auditory/language processing and behavioral deficits in ASD. Furthermore, a single session of cTBS over left pSTC is hypothesized to lead to significant, acute changes in local glutamate and GABA concentration, functional activity and network connectivity, and MEG indices of auditory/language processing. We have completed the pilot phase of the study (n=20 Healthy Volunteer adults) and have begun enrollment for the main phase with adolescents with ASD (n=86; age 14-17). If successful, this study will establish a nomological network linking local E/I balance measures to functional and structural connectivity within relevant brain networks, ultimately connecting them to ASD symptoms. Neurostimulation is a mainstream treatment option for major depression. Neuromodulation techniques apply repetitive magnetic or electrical stimulation to some neural target but significantly differ in their invasiveness, spatial selectivity, mechanism of action, and efficacy. Despite these differences, recent analyses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS)-treated individuals converged on a common neural network that might have a causal role in treatment response. We set out to investigate if the neuronal underpinnings of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are similarly associated with this causal depression network (CDN). Our aim here is to provide a comprehensive analysis in three cohorts of patients segregated by electrode placement (N = 246 with right unilateral, 79 with bitemporal, and 61 with mixed) who underwent ECT. We conducted a data-driven, unsupervised multivariate neuroimaging analysis Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the cortical and subcortical volume changes and electric field (EF) distribution to explore changes within the CDN associated with antidepressant outcomes. Despite the different treatment modalities (ECT vs TMS and DBS) and methodological approaches (structural vs functional networks), we found a highly similar pattern of change within the CDN in the three cohorts of patients (spatial similarity across 85 regions: r = 0.65, 0.58, 0.40, df = 83). Most importantly, the expression of this pattern correlated with clinical outcomes (t = -2.35, p = 0.019). This evidence further supports that treatment interventions converge on a CDN in depression. We have known for nearly a century that triggering seizures can treat serious mental illness, but what we do not know is why. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) works faster and better than conventional pharmacological interventions; however, those benefits come with a burden of side effects, most notably memory loss. Disentangling the mechanisms by which ECT exerts rapid therapeutic benefit from the mechanisms driving adverse effects could enable the development of the next generation of seizure therapies that lack the downside of ECT. The latest research suggests that this goal may be attainable because modifications of ECT technique have already yielded improvements in cognitive outcomes without sacrificing efficacy. These modifications involve changes in how the electricity is administered (both where in the brain, and how much), which in turn impacts the characteristics of the resulting seizure. What we do not completely understand is whether it is the changes in the applied electricity, or in the resulting seizure, or both, that are responsible for improved safety. Answering this question may be key to developing the next generation of seizure therapies that lack these adverse side effects, and ushering in novel interventions that are better, faster, and safer than ECT., (© 2023. When modeling transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in the brain, a fast and accurate electric field solver can support interactive neuronavigation tasks as well as comprehensive biophysical modeling. We formulate, test, and disseminate a direct (i.e., non-iterative) TMS solver that can accurately determine global TMS fields for any coil type everywhere in a high-resolution MRI-based surface model with ~ 200,000 or more arbitrarily selected observation points within approximately 5 s, with the solution time itself of 3 s. The solver is based on the boundary element fast multipole method (BEM-FMM), which incorporates the latest mathematical advancement in the theory of fast multipole methods-an FMM-based LU decomposition. This decomposition is specific to the head model and needs to be computed only once per subject. Moreover, the solver offers unlimited spatial numerical resolution. Despite the fast execution times, the present direct solution is numerically accurate for the default model resolution. In contrast, the widely used brain modeling software SimNIBS employs a first-order finite element method that necessitates additional mesh refinement, resulting in increased computational cost. However, excellent agreement between the two methods is observed for various practical test cases following mesh refinement, including a biophysical modeling task. The method can be readily applied to a wide range of TMS analyses involving multiple coil positions and orientations, including image-guided neuronavigation. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) coil placement and pulse waveform current are often chosen to achieve a specified E-field dose on targeted brain regions. TMS neuronavigation could be improved by including real-time accurate distributions of the E-field dose on the cortex. We introduce a method and develop software for computing brain E-field distributions in real-time enabling easy integration into neuronavigation and with the same accuracy as 1 st -order finite element method (FEM) solvers. Initially, a spanning basis set (< 400) of E-fields generated by white noise magnetic currents on a surface separating the head and permissible coil placements are orthogonalized to generate the modes. Subsequently, Reciprocity and Huygens' principles are utilized to compute fields induced by the modes on a surface separating the head and coil by FEM, which are used in conjunction with online (real-time) computed primary fields on the separating surface to evaluate the mode expansion. We conducted a comparative analysis of E-fields computed by FEM and in real-time for eight subjects, utilizing two head model types (SimNIBS's 'headreco' and 'mri2mesh' pipeline), three coil types (circular, double-cone, and Figure-8), and 1000 coil placements (48,000 simulations). The real-time computation for any coil placement is within 4 milliseconds (ms), for 400 modes, and requires less than 4 GB of memory on a GPU. Our solver is capable of computing E-fields within 4 ms, making it a practical approach for integrating E-field information into the neuronavigation systems without imposing a significant overhead on frame generation (20 and 50 frames per second within 50 and 20 ms, respectively)., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest None

Fish may experience injuries and mortality when they pass through hydraulic conveyances at hydropower dams, even if these conveyances are designed to be fish-friendly, such as downstream bypass systems, modified spillways and turbines. The main methods used to study fish passage conditions in hydraulic structures involve direct, in situ testing using Sensor Fish technology and live fish. Sensor Fish data helps identify physical stressors and their locations in the fish passage environment, while live fish are assessed for injuries and mortality. Balloon tags, which are self-inflating balloons attached externally to Sensor Fish and live fish, aid in their recovery after passing through hydraulic structures. This article focuses on the development of balloon tags with varying numbers of dissolvable, vegetable-based capsules containing a mixture of oxalic acid, sodium bicarbonate powders, and water at two different temperatures. Our research determined that balloon tags with three capsules, injected with 5 mL of water at 18.3 °C, consistently achieved the desired balloon volume. These tags had a mean inflation volume of 114 cm 3 with a standard deviation of 1.2 cm 3 . Among the balloon tags injected with water at 18.3 °C, it was observed that the two-capsule balloon tags took the longest time to reach full inflation. In addition, the four-capsule balloon tags demonstrated a faster inflation start time, while the three-capsule balloon tags demonstrated a faster deflation start time. Overall, this approach proves to be effective for validating the performance of new technologies, improving turbine design, and making operational decisions to enhance fish passage conditions. It serves as a valuable tool for research and field evaluations, aiding in the refinement of both the design and operation of hydraulic structures.

Tobacco-related deaths exceed those resulting from homicides, suicides, motor vehicle accidence, alcohol consumption, illicit substance use, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), combined. Amongst U.S. veterans, this trend is particularly concerning given that those suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)-about 11% of those receiving care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)-have triple the risk of developing tobacco use disorder (TUD). The most efficacious strategies being used at the VA for smoking cessation only result in a 23% abstinence rate, and veterans with PTSD only achieve a 4.5% abstinence rate. Therefore, there is a critical need to develop more effective treatments for smoking cessation. Recent studies have revealed the insula as integrally involved in the neurocircuitry of TUD, specifically showing that individuals with brain lesions involving this region had drastically improved quit rates. Some of these studies show a probability of quitting up to 5 times greater compared to non-insula lesioned regions). Altered activity of the insula may be involved in the disruption of the salience network's (SN) connectivity to the executive control network (ECN), which compromises that patient's ability to switch between interoceptive states focused on cravings to executive and cognitive control. Thus, we propose a feasibility phase II randomized controlled trial (RCT) to study a patterned form of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), at 90% of the subject's resting motor threshold (rMT) applied over a region in the right post-central gyrus most functionally connected to the right posterior insula. We hypothesize that by increasing functional connectivity between the SN with the ECN to enhance executive control and by decreasing connectivity with the default mode network (DMN) to reduce interoceptive focus on withdrawal symptoms, we will improve smoking cessation outcomes. Fifty eligible veterans with comorbid TUD and PTSD will be randomly assigned to two conditions: active-iTBS + cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) + nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) ( n =25) or sham-iTBS + CBT + NRT ( n =25). The primary outcome, feasibility, will be determined by achieving a recruitment of 50 participants and retention rate of 80%. The success of iTBS will be evaluated through self-reported nicotine use, cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and abstinence following quit date (confirmed by bioverification) along with evaluation for target engagement through neuroimaging changes, specifically connectivity differences between the insula and other regions of interest.

Objective: This study aims to describe a MATLAB software package for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coil analysis and design., Approach: Electric and magnetic fields of the coils as well as their self- and mutual (for coil arrays) inductances are computed, with or without a magnetic core. Solid and stranded (Litz wire) conductors are also taken into consideration. The starting point is the centerline of a coil conductor(s), which is a 3D curve defined by the user. Then, a wire mesh and a computer aided design (CAD) mesh for the volume conductor of a given cross-section (circular, elliptical, or rectangular) are automatically generated. Self- and mutual inductances of the coil(s) are computed. Given the conductor current and its time derivative, electric and magnetic fields of the coil(s) are determined anywhere in space.Computations are performed with the fast multipole method (FMM), which is the most efficient way to evaluate the fields of many elementary current elements (current dipoles) comprising the current carrying conductor at a large number of observation points. This is the major underlying mathematical operation behind both inductance and field calculations., Main Results: The wire-based approach enables precise replication of even the most complex physical conductor geometries, while the FMM acceleration quickly evaluates large quantities of elementary current filaments. Agreement to within 0.74% was obtained between the inductances computed by the FMM method and ANSYS Maxwell 3D for the same coil model. Although not provided in this study, it is possible to evaluate non-linear magnetic cores in addition to the linear core exemplified. An experimental comparison was carried out against a physical MagVenture C-B60 coil; the measured and simulated inductances differed by only 1.25%, and nearly perfect correlation was found between the measured and computed E-field values at each observation point., Significance: The developed software package is applicable to any quasistatic inductor design, not necessarily to the TMS coils only.

High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (L-DLPFC) shows promise as a treatment for treatment-resistant depression in adolescents. Conventional rTMS coil placement strategies include the 5 cm, the Beam F3, and the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) neuronavigation methods. The purpose of this study was to use electric field (E-field) models to compare the three targeting approaches to a computational E-field optimization coil placement method in depressed adolescents. Ten depressed adolescents (4 females, age: 15.9±1.1) participated in an open-label rTMS treatment study and were offered MRI-guided rTMS five times per week over 6-8 weeks. Head models were generated based on individual MRI images, and E-fields were simulated for the four targeting approaches. Results showed a significant difference in the induced E-fields at the L-DLPFC between the four targeting methods (χ2=24.7, p<0.001). Post hoc pairwise comparisons showed that there was a significant difference between any two of the targeting methods (Holm adjusted p<0.05), with the 5 cm rule producing the weakest E-field (46.0±17.4V/m), followed by the F3 method (87.4±35.4V/m), followed by MRI-guided (112.1±14.6V/m), and followed by the computational approach (130.1±18.1V/m). Variance analysis showed that there was a significant difference in sample variance between the groups (K2=8.0, p<0.05), with F3 having the largest variance. Participants who completed the full course of treatment had median E-fields correlated with depression symptom improvement (r=-0.77, p<0.05). E-field models revealed limitations of scalp-based methods compared to MRI guidance, suggesting computational optimization could enhance dose delivery to the target.

Objective: In our recent work pertinent to modeling of brain stimulation and neurophysiological recordings, substantial modeling errors in the computed electric field and potential have sometimes been observed for standard multi-compartment head models. The goal of this study is to quantify those errors and, further, eliminate them through an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) algorithm. The study concentrates on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), and electroencephalography (EEG) forward problems., Approach: We propose, describe, and systematically investigate an AMR method using the Boundary Element Method with Fast Multipole Acceleration (BEM-FMM) as the base numerical solver. The goal is to efficiently allocate additional unknowns to critical areas of the model, where they will best improve solution accuracy.The implemented AMR method's accuracy improvement is measured on head models constructed from 16 Human Connectome Project subjects under problem classes of TES, TMS, and EEG. Errors are computed between three solutions: an initial non-adaptive solution, a solution found after applying AMR with a conservative refinement rate, and a "silver-standard" solution found by subsequent 4:1 global refinement of the adaptively-refined model., Main Results: Excellent agreement is shown between the adaptively-refined and silver-standard solutions for standard head models. AMR is found to be vital for accurate modeling of TES and EEG forward problems for standard models: an increase of less than 25% (on average) in number of mesh elements for these problems, efficiently allocated by AMR, exposes electric field/potential errors exceeding 60% (on average) in the solution for the unrefined models., Significance: This error has especially important implications for TES dosing prediction - where the stimulation strength plays a central role - and for EEG lead fields. Though the specific form of the AMR method described here is implemented for the BEM-FMM, we expect that AMR is applicable and even required for accurate electromagnetic simulations by other numerical modeling packages as well.

Background: Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at higher risk for obesity. In turn, weight gain is a predisposing factor for depression. Although clinical data are sparse, suicide risk also appears to be elevated in obese patients. This study used data from the European Group for the Study of Resistant Depression (GSRD) to investigate clinical outcomes associated with body mass index (BMI) in MDD., Methods: Data were drawn from 892 participants with MDD over the age of 18 years (580 female, 50.5 ± 13.6 years). Response and resistance to antidepressant medication, depression rating scale scores, and further clinical and sociodemographic variables were compared using multiple logistic and linear regressions controlled for age, sex, and risk of weight gain due to psychopharmacotherapy., Results: Of the 892 participants, 323 were categorized as treatment-responsive and 569 as treatment-resistant. Within this cohort, 278 (31.1 %) were overweight (BMI = 25-29.9 kg/m 2 ) and 151 (16.9 %) were obese (BMI > 30 kg/m 2 ). Elevated BMI was significantly associated with higher suicidality, longer duration of psychiatric hospitalizations over their lifetimes, earlier age of onset of MDD, and comorbidities. There was a trend-wise association of BMI with treatment resistance., Limitations: Data were analyzed in a retrospective, cross-sectional design. BMI was used as an exclusive measure of overweight and obesity., Conclusions: Participants with comorbid MDD and overweight/obesity were at risk for worse clinical outcomes, suggesting that weight gain should be closely monitored in individuals with MDD in daily clinical practice. Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is efficacious for treatment-resistant depression. Treatment-induced cognitive impairment can adversely impact functional outcomes. Our pilot study linked the electric field to ictal theta power from a single suprathreshold treatment and linked ictal theta power to changes in phonemic fluency. In this study, we set out to replicate our findings and expand upon the utility of ictal theta power as a potential cognitive biomarker., Methods: Twenty-seven participants (18 female and 9 male) received right unilateral ECT for treatment-resistant depression. Pre-ECT magnetic resonance imaging and finite element modeling determined the 90th percentile maximum electric field in the brain. Two-lead electroencephalographs were digitally captured across the ECT course, with the earliest suprathreshold treatment used to determine power spectral density. Clinical and cognitive outcomes were assessed pre-, mid-, and post-ECT. We assessed the relationship between the electric field in the brain, ictal theta power, clinical outcome (Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology), and cognitive outcomes (phonemic and semantic fluency) with linear models., Results: Ictal theta power in the Fp1 and Fp2 channels was associated with the electric field, antidepressant outcome, and phonemic and semantic fluency. The relationship between ictal theta power and phonemic fluency was strengthened in the longitudinal analysis. The electric field in the brain was directly associated with phonemic and semantic fluency but not with antidepressant outcome., Conclusions: Ictal theta power is a potential cognitive biomarker early on in the ECT course to help guide parameter changes. The potential effects of underwater anthropogenic sound and substrate vibration from offshore renewable energy development on the behavior, fitness, and health of aquatic animals is a continuing concern with increased deployments and installation of these devices. Initial focus of related studies concerned offshore wind. However, over the past decade, marine energy devices, such as a tidal turbines and wave energy converters, have begun to emerge as additional, scalable renewable energy sources. Because marine energy converters (MECs) are not as well-known as other anthropogenic sources of potential disturbance, their general function and what is known about the sounds and substrate vibrations that they produce are introduced. While most previous studies focused on MECs and marine mammals, this paper considers the potential of MECs to cause acoustic disturbances affecting nearshore and tidal fishes and invertebrates. In particular, the focus is on particle motion and substrate vibration from MECs because these effects are the most likely to be detected by these animals. Finally, an analysis of major data gaps in understanding the acoustics of MECs and their potential impacts on fishes and aquatic invertebrates and recommendations for research needed over the next several years to improve understanding of these potential impacts are provided., (© 2023 U.S. Government.)

Neurostimulation is a mainstream treatment option for major depression. Neuromodulation techniques apply repetitive magnetic or electrical stimulation to some neural target but significantly differ in their invasiveness, spatial selectivity, mechanism of action, and efficacy. Despite these differences, recent analyses of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS)-treated individuals converged on a common neural network that might have a causal role in treatment response. We set out to investigate if the neuronal underpinnings of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are similarly associated with this common causal network (CCN). Our aim here is to provide a comprehensive analysis in three cohorts of patients segregated by electrode placement (N = 246 with right unilateral, 79 with bitemporal, and 61 with mixed) who underwent ECT. We conducted a data-driven, unsupervised multivariate neuroimaging analysis (Principal Component Analysis, PCA) of the cortical and subcortical volume changes and electric field (EF) distribution to explore changes within the CCN associated with antidepressant outcomes. Despite the different treatment modalities (ECT vs TMS and DBS) and methodological approaches (structural vs functional networks), we found a highly similar pattern of change within the CCN in the three cohorts of patients (spatial similarity across 85 regions: r = 0.65, 0.58, 0.40, df = 83). Most importantly, the expression of this pattern correlated with clinical outcomes. This evidence further supports that treatment interventions converge on a CCN in depression. Background: The field of view (FOV) considered in MRI-guided forward models of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are, as expected, limited to the MRI volume collected. Therefore, there is variation in model extent considered across simulation efforts. This study examines the impact of FOV on the induced electric field (E-field) due to two common electrode placements: right unilateral (RUL) and bilateral (BL)., Methods: A full-body dataset was obtained and processed for modeling relevant to ECT physics. Multiple extents were derived by truncating from the head down to four levels: upper head (whole-brain), full head, neck, and torso. All relevant stimulation and focality metrics were determined. The differences in the 99th percentile peak of stimulation strength in the brain between each extent to the full-body (reference) model were considered as the relative error (RE). We also determine the FOV beyond which the difference to a full-body model would be negligible., Results: The 2D and 3D spatial plots revealed anticipated results in line with prior efforts. The RE for BL upper head was ~50% reducing to ~2% for the neck FOV. The RE for RUL upper head was ~5% reducing to subpercentage (0.28%) for the full-head FOV. As shown previously, BL was found to stimulate a larger brain volume-but restricted to the upper head and for amplitude up to ~480 mA. To some extent, RUL stimulated a larger volume. The RUL-induced volume was larger even when considering the neural activation threshold corresponding to brief pulse BL if ECT amplitude was >270 mA. This finding is explained by the BL-induced current loss through the inferior regions as more FOV is considered. Our result is a departure from prior efforts and raises questions about the focality metric as defined and/or inter-individual differences., Conclusion: Our findings highlight that BL is impacted more than RUL with respect to FOV. It is imperative to collect full-head data at a minimum for any BL simulation and possibly more. Clinical practice resorts to using BL ECT when RUL is unsuccessful. Although macroalgae are regarded as the emerging fourth category of "blue carbon", few studies are available on the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release. Sargassum thunbergii is a typical intertidal macroalgae; and tidal action usually triggers instantaneous changes in temperature, light and salinity. Therefore, we investigated the mechanism of short-term changes in temperature, light and salinity on DOC release by S. thunbergii. As well as these factors coupled with desiccation, the combined effect of DOC release was revealed. The results showed the DOC release rate of S. thunbergii was from 0.028 to 0.037 mg C g -1 (FW) h -1 under different photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 0-1500 μmol photons m -2  s -1 ). The DOC release rate of S. thunbergii was from 0.008 to 0.208 mg C g -1 (FW) h -1 under different salinity (5-40). The DOC release rate of S. thunbergii was from 0.031 to 0.034 mg C g -1 (FW) h -1 under different temperature (10-30 °C).
