1. Towards Scalability and Extensibility of Query Reformulation Modeling in E-commerce Search

Abstract

Customer behavioral data significantly impacts e-commerce search systems. However, in the case of less common queries, the associated behavioral data tends to be sparse and noisy, offering inadequate support to the search mechanism. To address this challenge, the concept of query reformulation has been introduced. It suggests that less common queries could utilize the behavior patterns of their popular counterparts with similar meanings. In Amazon product search, query reformulation has displayed its effectiveness in improving search relevance and bolstering overall revenue. Nonetheless, adapting this method for smaller or emerging businesses operating in regions with lower traffic and complex multilingual settings poses the challenge in terms of scalability and extensibility. This study focuses on overcoming this challenge by constructing a query reformulation solution capable of functioning effectively, even when faced with limited training data, in terms of quality and scale, along with relatively complex linguistic characteristics. In this paper we provide an overview of the solution implemented within Amazon product search infrastructure, which encompasses a range of elements, including refining the data mining process, redefining model training objectives, and reshaping training strategies. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is validated through online A/B testing on search ranking and Ads matching. Notably, employing the proposed solution in search ranking resulted in 0.14% and 0.29% increase in overall revenue in Japanese and Hindi cases, respectively, and a 0.08\% incremental gain in the English case compared to the legacy implementation; while in search Ads matching led to a 0.36% increase in Ads revenue in the Japanese case.

Abstract

In order to regulate work in process (WIP) to the desired value in the job shop production control system, capacity adjustment as an effective and efficient measure, which is typically achieved by flexible staffs and working time. In this paper, instead of traditional labour-oriented approaches, we consider a machinery-based capacity adjustment via reconfigurable machine tools (RMTs) to compensate for unpredictable events. To this end, we employ model predictive control (MPC) in combination with genetic algorithm (GA) to explicitly consider complex reconfiguration strategies and address the related integer assignment optimisation problems. To further reduce energy consumption and avoid frequent and unnecessary reconfigurations while keeping a certain level of performance, we adopt an event-triggered MPC scheme with the proposed 'Double-layer event-triggering conditions'. Through extensively illustrated simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness and plug-and-play availability of the proposed method for a six-workstation four-product job shop system and compare it to a state-of-the-art method. 11. The Impacts of Optical Crosstalk on the Color Gamut of Mini-LED Integrated Matrix Device

Abstract

Optical crosstalk between adjacent pixels acts as one of the major challenges for miniaturized light-emitting diode (mini-LED) displays. In this letter, the impacts of optical crosstalk on the chromatic characteristics of the four-in-one mini-LED integrated matrix device (IMD) have been investigated. The influence of driving current on the optical crosstalk in four-in-one IMDs has also been determined. To be specific, red mini-LEDs can compromise the color gamut of full-color self-emissive mini-LED displays. This demonstrates the crucial need to optimize the operating conditions of red mini-LEDs to alleviate optical crosstalk in displays using four-in-one IMDs. $\Delta u$ ’v’, the chromatic shift, causing by the optical crosstalk originating from red mini-LEDs reaches 0.024 and 0.045 for green and blue mini-LEDs, and the color gamut decreases from 112.00% to 102.47% under the red crosstalk.

Abstract

As the world’s population is aging and there is a shortage of sufficient caring manpower, the development of intelligent care robots is a feasible solution. At present, plenty of care robots have been developed, but humanized care robots that can suitably respond to the individual behaviors of elderly people, such as pose, expression, gaze, and speech are generally lacking. To achieve the interaction, the main objectives of this study are: (1) conducting a literature review and analyzing the status quo on the following four core tasks of image and speech recognition technology: human pose recognition, human facial expression recognition, eye gazing recognition, and Chinese speech recognition; (2) proposing improvement strategies for these tasks based on the results of the literature review. The results of the study on these improvement strategies will provide the basis for using human facial expression robots in elderly care.

Abstract

Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is an air traffic surveillance system in which aircraft broadcast GPS position, velocity and status on 1090 MHz. Nowadays, as a valid alternative to SSR, ADS-B is the main technology for Air Traffic Management (ATM). With the rapid growth of airspace traffic and disappearance of MH370, satellite-based ADS-B is proposed to realize aerial surveillance globally. The satellite-based ADS-B has a series of new features that Terrestrial based does not have including wider coverage, lower SNR. These new features make ADS-B signal collisions at the receiver more severe. This paper is to analyze the collision probability of satellite-based ADS-B messages based on homogeneous Poisson process. According to the theoretical derivation and simulation analysis, a conclusion can be drawn that the collisions of two and three messages dominate in all cases. It helps in guiding the design of the hardware and software of satellite-based ADS-B receiver to focus on the separation of two and/or three collision messages only, which will dramatically reduce the complexity of the system and the load of satellite.
