Abstract

Using the B$\rho$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry technique, we report the first determination of the $^{23}$Si, $^{26}$P, $^{27}$S, and $^{31}$Ar masses and improve the precision of the $^{28}$S mass by a factor of 11. Our measurements confirm that these isotopes are bound and fix the location of the proton dripline in P, S, and Ar. We find that the mirror energy differences of the mirror-nuclei pairs $^{26}$P-$^{26}$Na, $^{27}$P-$^{27}$Mg, $^{27}$S-$^{27}$Na, $^{28}$S-$^{28}$Mg, and $^{31}$Ar-$^{31}$Al deviate significantly from the values predicted assuming mirror symmetry. In addition, we observe similar anomalies in the excited states, but not in the ground states, of the mirror-nuclei pairs $^{22}$Al-$^{22}$F and $^{23}$Al-$^{23}$Ne. Using $ab~ initio$ VS-IMSRG and mean field calculations, we show that such a mirror-symmetry breaking phenomeon can be explained by the extended charge distributions of weakly-bound, proton-rich nuclei. When observed, this phenomenon serves as a unique signature that can be valuable for identifying proton-halo candidates.

Abstract

We investigate the effect of structural deformation on the magnetic properties of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ in relation to its tetragonal polymorph. Utilizing x-ray and neutron diffraction we establish that the crystal structure has the $Cmcm$ space group symmetry and exhibits pseudo-tetragonal twinning. According to density-functional calculations the tetragonal-orthorhombic deformation mechanism has its grounds in relatively small free enthalpy difference between the polymorphs, allowing either phase to be quenched and fully accounts for the twinned microstructure of the orthorhombic phase. Neutron diffraction measurements show that orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ establishes long-range magnetic order below $T_\mathrm{N}$=5.29 (5) K characterized by a collinear, antiferromagnetic arrangement of magnetic moments. Magnetic anisotropies of orthorhombic CePdAl$_3$ arise from strong spin-orbit coupling as evidenced by the crystal-field splitting of the $4f$ multiplet, fully characterised with neutron spectroscopy. We discuss the potential mechanism of frustration posed by antiferromagnetic interactions between nearest neighbours in the tetragonal phase, which hinders the formation of long-range magnetic order in tetragonal CePdAl$_3$. Abstract

Electronic devices for information storages and processes can be further optimized by introducing the degree of freedom of anisotropy, which is strongly dependent of their structural symmetry. Herein, a ReSeS monolayer with asymmetrical double-faces are proposed to disclose the anisotropic electronic structure. Meanwhile infrared fingerprint based on the lattice vibration is also adopted to demonstrate the symmetry-breaking-dependent structural transformation. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the geometry deformation will induce the reconstruction of electronic structure. Ulteriorly, both the dynamic properties of carrier and spectroscopic response can be regulated by external strain and displays anisotropic behaviors. Abstract

The breaking of time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in the normal state of kagome superconductors $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ stands out as a significant feature. Yet the extent to which this effect can be tuned remains uncertain, a crucial aspect to grasp in light of the varying details of TRS breaking observed through different techniques. Here, we employ the unique low-energy muon spin rotation technique combined with local field numerical analysis to study the TRS breaking response as a function of depth from the surface in single crystals of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ with charge order and Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ without charge order. In the bulk (i.e., > 33 nm from the surface) of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, we have detected a notable increase in the internal magnetic field width experienced by the muon ensemble. This increase occurs only within the charge ordered state. Intriguingly, the muon spin relaxation rate is significantly enhanced near the surface (i.e., < 33 nm from the surface) of RbV$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, and this effect commences at temperatures significantly higher than the onset of charge order. Conversely, in Cs(V$_{0.86}$Ta$_{0.14}$)$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$, we do not observe a similar enhancement in the internal field width, neither in the bulk nor near the surface. These observations indicate a strong connection between charge order and TRS breaking on one hand, and on the other hand, suggest that TRS breaking can occur prior to long-range charge order. This research offers compelling evidence for depth-dependent magnetism in $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ superconductors in the presence of charge order. Abstract

The ground-state mass excess of the $T_{z}=-2$ drip-line nucleus $^{22}$Al is measured for the first time to be $18103(10)$ keV using the newly-developed B$\rho$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry method at the cooler storage ring in Lanzhou. The new mass excess value allowed us to determine the excitation energies of the two low-lying $1^+$ states in $^{22}$Al with significantly reduced uncertainties of 51 keV. Comparing to the analogue states in its mirror nucleus $^{22}$F, the mirror energy differences of the two $1^+$ states in the $^{22}$Al-$^{22}$F mirror pair are determined to be $-625(51)$ keV and $-330(51)$ keV, respectively. The excitation energies and the mirror energy differences are used to test the state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations with four sets of interactions derived from the chiral effective field theory. The mechanism leading to the large mirror energy differences is investigated and attributed to the occupation of the $\pi s_{1/2}$ orbital., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The Australian, Chinese, European, Indian, and North American pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations recently reported, at varying levels, evidence for the presence of a nanohertz gravitational wave background (GWB). Given that each PTA made different choices in modeling their data, we perform a comparison of the GWB and individual pulsar noise parameters across the results reported from the PTAs that constitute the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). We show that despite making different modeling choices, there is no significant difference in the GWB parameters that are measured by the different PTAs, agreeing within $1\sigma$. The pulsar noise parameters are also consistent between different PTAs for the majority of the pulsars included in these analyses. We bridge the differences in modeling choices by adopting a standardized noise model for all pulsars and PTAs, finding that under this model there is a reduction in the tension in the pulsar noise parameters. As part of this reanalysis, we "extended" each PTA's data set by adding extra pulsars that were not timed by that PTA. Under these extensions, we find better constraints on the GWB amplitude and a higher signal-to-noise ratio for the Hellings and Downs correlations. These extensions serve as a prelude to the benefits offered by a full combination of data across all pulsars in the IPTA, i.e., the IPTA's Data Release 3, which will involve not just adding in additional pulsars, but also including data from all three PTAs where any given pulsar is timed by more than as single PTA., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between inflammatory cytokines, T cell subsets, and clinical indicators. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were plotted to analyze the predictive value of serum inflammatory factors and T cell subsets for acute exacerbations of COPD.Results: The observation group had higher levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and CD8+, and lower CD4+ levels (P< 0.05). The ratio of forced expiratory volume in 1 second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) was lower, while procalcitonin (PCT) and white blood cell count (WBC) were higher (P< 0.05). Correlation analysis showed positive correlations between IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and CD8+, and negative correlations with CD4+ and FEV1/FVC (P< 0.05). After 6 months, 15 out of 73 patients had acute recurrences, with higher IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and CD8+ levels (P< 0.05). Binary logistic regression identified IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and CD8+ as significant predictors of exacerbations, while CD4+ was protective. ROC analysis showed that combined biomarkers had the highest predictive efficiency (AUC = 0.907).Conclusion: This study is the first to integrate multiple serum inflammatory factors and T cell subsets into a comprehensive predictive model for acute recurrence of COPD within six months (AUC = 0.907), offering a more accurate prediction than traditional methods. The prevalence of four important drug resistance phenotypes was studied: difficult-to-treat resistance, fluoroquinolone resistance, carbapenem resistance, and extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance, and to provide reference basis for preventing and treating BSIs diseases in children.Methods: Strain identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were independently performed at each hospital. Data were analyzed using Whonet 5.6 and GraphPad Prism 8 software. The Mann–Whitney U-test was used to examine and compare temporal changes.Results: A total of 39977 BSIs strains were isolated, with 27.1% of the negative bacteria causing BSIs (10824 strains). The highest bacteria detected were E. coli and S. maltophilia in the neonatal and pediatric groups. The detection rate of carbapenem-resistant-K. pneumoniae (CRKPN) in neonate group was 31.4%, significantly increased compared with pediatric group, whose detection rate was 24.7%. The rates of resistance to levofloxacin and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole were significantly lower in neonatal groups than pediatric groups in BSIs caused by K. pneumoniae. To imipenem and meropenem were 3.6% and 3.9% among neonatal isolates, which was lower than 4.7% and 5.8 among pediatric BSIs caused by E. coli. Isolated from neonatal BSIs caused by A. baumannii showed lower resistance ratios to all the agents tested than those from pediatric. However, only the prevalence of piperacillin/tazobactam resistance was statistically lower than that in pediatric BSIs caused by P. aeruginosa. The average detection rates of carbapenem resistance, extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance, and fluoroquinolone resistance for K. pneumoniae and E. coli were 28.1%,41.4%,11.6% and 4.0%,24.3%,31.1%, respectively.Conclusion: The detection rate of gram-negative pathogens showed an increasing trend among the bloodstream infection. The detection rate of CRKPN assumed a downward trend in 2018. There are differences types of pathogens between the neonatal group and the pediatric group, The detection rate of CRKPN in the neonate group was significantly higher than pediatric group. The first average detection rates for carbapenem resistance, extended-spectrum cephalosporin resistance, and fluoroquinolone resistance were obtained for A. baumannii, K. pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, respectively. Abstract

Charge ordered kagome lattices have been demonstrated to be intriguing platforms for studying the intertwining of topology, correlation, and magnetism. The recently discovered charge ordered kagome material ScV_6Sn_6 does not feature a magnetic groundstate or excitations, thus it is often regarded as a conventional paramagnet. Here, using advanced muon-spin rotation spectroscopy, we uncover an unexpected hidden magnetism of the charge order. We observe a striking enhancement of the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble, which takes place within the charge ordered state. More remarkably, the muon spin relaxation rate below the charge ordering temperature is substantially enhanced by applying an external magnetic field. Taken together with the hidden magnetism found in AV_3Sb_5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) and FeGe kagome systems, our results suggest ubiqitous time-reversal symmetry-breaking in charge ordered kagome lattices., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Previous studies have shown that treatments targeting oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction have limited efficacy for cold seawater immersion combined with hemorrhagic shock (SIHS). Thus, the mechanisms responsible for SIHS need further investigation.Methods and Results: Data from the hemorrhagic shock transcriptome and cold seawater immersion targets used for bioinformatics analysis revealed the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in SIHS occurrence and progression. Based on these findings, the effects and possible mechanism of inhibiting ERS in SIHS rats were investigated. SIHS causes a lethal triad and impairment of vital organ function, leading to death. Compared to lactated Ringer’s solution, the ERS inhibitor 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA)significantly ameliorated acidosis and coagulopathy and protected vital organ function while prolonging survival and the golden treatment time. Through target screening and validation, 7 targets were identified for the ERS inhibitor PBA for the treatment of SIHS, among which S1PR1, MMP8 and CFTR may play more important roles.Conclusion: ERS plays a crucial role in the progression of SIHS. Inhibition of ERS caused by SIHS alleviates the lethal triad, protects organ function, and prolongs survival and the golden treatment time. In more than a decade of clinical use, the optimized formula of Yinxieling (PSORI-CM01) has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness for treating psoriasis. However, its underlying mechanism remains largely unexplored.Methods: The network pharmacology analysis was conducted to predict the mechanism and protective effect of PSORI-CM01 in treating psoriasis. Subsequently, we collected blood samples from 21 patients with psoriasis as part of a randomized, double-blind, and double-dummy clinical trial for microRNA expression profiling. Finally, it was experimentally confirmed that PSORI-CM01 improved psoriasis by regulating miR-20a-3p and miR-3184-3p expression.Results: As a result of the network pharmacology analysis, PSORI-CM01 improved psoriasis through the regulation of autophagy, cellular apoptosis, cellular proliferation, and anti-inflammatory processes. In the target-miRNA regulatory network, these key targets were mainly associated with the regulation of hsa-miR-20a-3p, hsa-miR-155-5p, has-miR-3184-3p, hsa-miR-328-3p and hsa-miR-124-3p. Based on the microRNA expression profiling results, the PSORI-CM01 treatment group exhibited five up-regulated genes and 16 down-regulated genes compared with the healthy control group. In particular, miR-20a-3p and miR-3184-3p were the primary differentially expressed microRNAs, and they were significantly enriched in the signaling pathways involving autophagy, apoptosis, proliferation, and anti-inflammation. Further experiments confirmed that PSORI-CM01 effectively regulates miR-20a-3p and miR-3184-3p, resulting in increased autophagy.Conclusion: We demonstrated by combining network pharmacology and clinical studies of miRNA expression profiles in PBMCs that PSORI-CM01 effectively modulated miR-20a-3p and miR-3184-3p, leading to an increase in autophagy and a decrease in keratinocyte proliferation.Keywords: PSORI-CM01, Psoriasis vulgaris, MicroRNA expression profile, network pharmacology, autophagy

Abstract

A novel technique for broadband high-precision mass measurements of short-lived exotic nuclides is reported. It is based on the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) and realizes simultaneous determinations of revolution time and velocity of short-lived stored ions at the cooler storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The new technique, named as the $B\rho$-defined IMS or $B\rho$-IMS, boosts the efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy of mass measurements, and is applied here to measure masses of neutron-deficient $fp$-shell nuclides. In a single accelerator setting, masses of $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni are determined with relative uncertainties of (5~-~6)$\times10^{-8}$, thereby improving the input data for testing the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Abstract

A novel isochronous mass spectrometry, termed as $B\rho$-defined IMS, is established at the experimental cooler-storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. Its potential has been studied through high precision mass measurements of $^{58}$Ni projectile fragments. Two time-of-flight detectors were installed in one of the straight sections of CSRe, thus enabling simultaneous measurements of the velocity and the revolution time of each stored short-lived ion. This allows for calculating the magnetic rigidity $B\rho$ and the orbit length $C$ of each ion. The accurate $B\rho(C)$ function has been constructed, which is a universal calibration curve used to deduce the masses of the stored nuclides. The sensitivity to single stored ions, quickness, and background-free characteristics of the method are ideally suited to address nuclides with very short lifetimes and tiniest production yields. In the limiting case of just a single particle, the attained mass resolving power allows one us to determine its mass-over-charge ratio $m/q$ with a remarkable precision of merely $\sim5$ keV. Masses of $T_z = -3/2$ fp-shell nuclides are re-determined with high accuracy, and the validity of the isospin multiplet mass equation is tested up to the heaviest isospin quartet with $A = 55$. The new masses are also used to investigate the mirror symmetry of empirical residual proton-neutron interactions.

However, the core ingredients and mechanism underlying these anti-liver cancer effects have not been fully clarified due to its complex composition.Methods: Multidimensional network analysis was used to screen the core ingredients, key targets and pathways underlying the therapeutic effects of cinobufotalin injection on liver cancer, and in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to confirm the findings.Results: By construction of ingredient networks and integrated analysis, eight core ingredients and ten key targets were finally identified in cinobufotalin injection, and all of the core ingredients are tightly linked with the key targets, and these key targets are highly associated with the cell cycle-related pathways, supporting that both cinobufotalin injection and its core ingredients exert anti-liver cancer roles by blocking cell cycle-related pathways. Moreover, in vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that either cinobufotalin injection or one of its core ingredients, cinobufagin, significantly inhibited cell proliferation, colony formation, cell cycle progression and xenograft tumor growth, and the key target molecules involved in the cell cycle pathway such as CDK1, CDK4, CCNB1, CHEK1 and CCNE1, exhibit consistent changes in expression after treatment with cinobufotalin injection or cinobufagin. Interestingly, some key targets CDK1, CDK4, PLK1, CHEK1, TTK were predicted to bind with multiple of core ingredients of cinobufotalin injection, and the affinity between one of the critical ingredients cinobufagin and key target CDK1 was further confirmed by SPR assay.Conclusion: Cinobufotalin injection was confirmed to includes eight core ingredients, and they play therapeutic effects in liver cancer by blocking cell cycle-related pathways, which provides important insights for the mechanism of cinobufotalin injection antagonizing liver cancer and the development of novel small molecule anti-cancer drugs. This review examines the investigations into ASFs and their pathological behavior, which contributes to inflammatory microenvironments and abnormal bone formation. The review spans the period from 2000 to 2023, with a primary focus on the most recent decade. Additionally, the review provides an in-depth discussion on studies on ASF ossification at the cellular level.Recent Findings: ASFs organize immune functions by recruiting immune cells and influencing their differentiation and activation, thus mediate the inflammatory response in the early phase of disease. ASFs promote joint destruction at sites of cartilage and actively promote abnormal ossification by recruiting osteoblasts, differentiation into myofibroblasts or ossification directly. Many signaling pathways and cytokines such as Wnt signaling and BMP/TGF-β signaling are involved in ASF ossification.Summary: ASFs play a key role in AS inflammation and osteogenesis. However, little is known about the association between sleep and comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms (CDAS). Therefore, this study aims to explore the relationship between sleep duration, insomnia and CDAS.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 22,004 community adults who participated in the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study. Chinese version of Patient Health Questionnaire-2 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 were used to screen CDAS in community adults. A positive score on each scale was considered indicative of CDAS. All participants received face-to-face interviews, medical examinations, and biochemical examinations to assess sleep duration and insomnia and collect covariates. The self-reported sleep duration was divided into three groups: < 7 hr, 7– 9 hr and > 9 hr groups. Logistic regression was used to analyze the association between sleep duration, insomnia and CDAS. A restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to explore the dose–response relationship between sleep duration and CDAS. Stratified analysis based on gender and age was conducted.Results: Overall, 2.8% (95% CI 2.6%~3.0%) of participants reported having CDAS. After adjusting the potential covariates, sleep duration < 7 hr (OR=1.635, 95% CI=1.335~2.004) was significantly associated with CDAS, compared with sleep 7– 9 hr. After RCS analysis, there was a nonlinear relationship between sleep duration and CDAS. The increase in the number of types of insomnia, the greater the likelihood of CDAS (p for trend< 0.05). In sensitivity analysis, it was found that the results were consistent with those of the main analysis. Importantly, a significant number of pathogenic genes remain unexplored in DFUs.Methods: A series of bioinformatics analyses were performed on publicly available bulk transcriptome sequencing datasets GSE134431 and GSE80178 to explore the transcriptomic changes in DFUs and select core genes for in vitro functional validation. In a focused examination, the differential expression analysis unveiled distinctions in gene expression patterns between DFUs and non-ulcerated diabetic skin tissues. Enriched functional annotations of differentially expressed genes were explored using the DAVID online tool. Protein-protein interaction analysis was conducted to investigate interactions among differentially expressed genes and select core genes. Knockdown or overexpression of core genes in HaCaT keratinocytes was performed to assess their impact on cell proliferation and migration.Results: Ten core genes were identified. Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and scratch assays demonstrated that downregulation of the core gene SIN3A significantly inhibited the migration and proliferation of HaCaT keratinocytes, while overexpression of SIN3A reversed the high-glucose-induced suppression of HaCaT cell viability and migration.Conclusion: SIN3A expression is downregulated in DFUs. They were randomized into Succinylated Gelatin, Multiple Electrolytes and Sodium Acetate Injection (SG-MESAI) group (experimental group) and Succinylated Gelatin Injection (SGI) infusion group (control group). The same anesthetic induction technique, anesthetic method, and calculation method for the volume of colloid infusion were used in the two groups. Between-group differences in the changes in base excess (BE), Chloride ion (Cl−), bicarbonate radical (HCO3⁻) and other parameters were recorded at 15 min, 30 min after the infusion relative to the baseline. Hemodynamic indicators were determined at 30 min after colloid infusion. Safety follow-up was conducted by administering the following tests within 48 h± 12 h after surgery.Results: A total of 225 subjects (full analysis set) were finally enrolled, with 110 subjects in the experimental group and 115 subjects in the control group. The baseline data were comparable between the two groups. At 15 min after infusion, the mean changes in BE, Cl− and HCO3⁻ concentration in the experimental group were smaller than those of the control group (P< 0.001). At 30 min after surgery, the mean changes in BE, Cl−, HCO3⁻concentration and pH value were smaller in the experimental group than in the control group (P< 0.05). The incidences of adverse events and adverse reactions in the experimental group was less than the control group, but the difference was not statistically significant (P≥ 0.05). Besides, no serious adverse events or adverse reactions were reported in any subjects.Conclusion: Succinylated Gelatin, Multiple Electrolytes and Sodium Acetate Injection maintained the balance of BE, Cl−, HCO3⁻ and pH value in a better way than Succinylated Gelatin Injection in non-cardiac surgery patients under general anesthesia.Keywords: anesthesia, non-cardiac surgery, fluid therapy, drug clinical trial, succinylated gelatin, multiple electrolytes and sodium acetate injection

Neutron diffraction studies of HoFeO$_3$ single crystal were performed under external magnetic fields. The interplay between the external magnetic field, Dzyaloshinsky-Moria antisymmetric exchange and isotropic exchange interactions between Fe and Ho sublattice and inside Fe sublattice provides a rich phase diagram. Abstract

A low-disorder, two-dimensional electron system (2DES) subjected to a large perpendicular magnetic field and cooled to very low temperatures provides a rich platform for studies of many-body quantum phases. The magnetic field quenches the electrons' kinetic energy and quantizes the energy into a set of Landau levels, allowing the Coulomb interaction to dominate. In excited Landau levels, the fine interplay between short- and long-range interactions stabilizes bubble phases, Wigner crystals with more than one electron per unit cell. Here we present the screening properties of bubble phases, probed via a simple capacitance technique where the 2DES is placed between a top and a bottom gate and the electric field penetrating through the 2DES is measured. The bubbles formed at very low temperatures screen the electric field poorly as they are pinned by the residual disorder potential, allowing a large electric field to reach the top gate. As the temperature is increased, the penetrating electric field decreases and, surprisingly, exhibits a pronounced minimum at a temperature that appears to coincide with the melting temperature of the bubble phase. We deduce a quantitative phase diagram for the transition from bubble to liquid phases for Landau level filling factors $4\leq\nu\leq5$.

Abstract

We report a neutron diffraction study of single-crystal CePtAl$_3$ complemented by measurements of the specific heat under applied magnetic field. Below $T_\mathrm{N}$=3 K CePtAl$_3$ develops incommensurate antiferromagnetic order with a single modulation vector $\vec{k}$=$(0.676 \, 0 \, 0)$. Residual magnetic scattering intensity above $T_\mathrm{N}$ and a broadening of the specific heat anomaly at $T_\mathrm{N}$ may be consistently described in terms of a Gaussian distribution of transition temperatures with a standard deviation $\sigma\approx0.5\,{\rm K}$. The distribution of $T_\mathrm{N}$ may be attributed to the observation of occupational and positional disorder between the Pt and Al sites. Abstract

Si dominates the semiconductor industry material but possesses an abnormally low room temperature hole mobility (505 cm^2/Vs), which is four times lower than that of Diamond and Ge (2000 cm^2/Vs), two adjacent neighbours in the group IV column in the Periodic Table. In the past half-century, extensive efforts have been made to overcome the challenges of Si technology caused by low mobility in Si. However, the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms remains lacking. Here, we theoretically reproduce the experimental data for conventional group IV and III-V semiconductors without involving adjustable parameters by curing the shortcoming of classical models. We uncover that the abnormally low hole mobility in Si originating from a combination of the strong interband scattering resulting from its weak spin-orbit coupling and the intensive participation of optical phonons in hole-phonon scattering. In contrast, the strong spin-orbit coupling in Ge leads to a negligible interband scattering; the strong bond and light atom mass in diamond give rise to high optical phonons frequency, preventing their participation in scattering. Abstract

Bloch oscillations were predicted and observed long ago in Josephson junctions, which are thin insulating or conducting layers bridging two superconductors. Here we forward a scheme for utilizing these oscillations to amplify nano-metric mechanical vibrations. Highly coherent non-classical mechanical states can be produced and controlled by simply applying a DC bias current and an in-plane magnetic field. Abstract

A search has been performed for neutrinos from two sources, the $hep$ reaction in the solar $pp$ fusion chain and the $\nu_e$ component of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), using the full dataset of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory with a total exposure of 2.47 kton-years after fiducialization. The $hep$ search is performed using both a single-bin counting analysis and a likelihood fit. We find a best-fit flux that is compatible with solar model predictions while remaining consistent with zero flux, and set a one-sided upper limit of $\Phi_{hep} < 30\times10^{3}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}~\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ [90% credible interval (CI)]. No events are observed in the DSNB search region, and we set an improved upper bound on the $\nu_e$ component of the DSNB flux of $\Phi^\mathrm{DSNB}_{\nu_e} < 19~\textrm{cm}^{-2}~\textrm{s}^{-1}$ (90% CI) in the energy range $22.9 < E_\nu < 36.9$~MeV., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

A sufficiently large perpendicular magnetic field quenches the kinetic (Fermi) energy of an interacting two-dimensional (2D) system of fermions, making them susceptible to the formation of a Wigner solid (WS) phase in which the charged carriers organize themselves in a periodic array in order to minimize their Coulomb repulsion energy. In low-disorder 2D electron systems confined to modulation-doped GaAs heterostructures, signatures of a magnetic-field-induced WS appear at low temperatures and very small Landau level filling factors ($\nu\simeq1/5$). In dilute GaAs 2D \textit{hole} systems, on the other hand, thanks to the larger hole effective mass and the ensuing Landau level mixing, the WS forms at relatively higher fillings ($\nu\simeq1/3$). Here we report our measurements of the fundamental temperature vs. filling phase diagram for the 2D holes' WS-liquid \textit{thermal melting}. Moreover, via changing the 2D hole density, we also probe their Landau level mixing vs. filling WS-liquid \textit{quantum melting} phase diagram. 36. The spatial distribution of quasi-biennial oscillations in the high-latitude solar activity

Abstract

Quasi-biennial oscillations (QBOs) are considered as a fundamental mode of solar magnetic activity at low latitudes ($\leq50^\circ$). However, the evolutionary aspect and the hemispheric distribution of solar QBOs at high latitudes ($\geq60^\circ$) are rarely studied. Here, a relatively novel time-frequency analysis technique, named the synchrosqueezed wavelet transform, is applied to extract the main components of the polar faculae in the northern and southern hemispheres for the time interval from August 1951 to December 1998. It is found as the following: (1) Apart from the 22-year Hale cycle, the 17-year extended activity cycle, and the 11-year Schwabe cycle, the QBOs have been estimated as a prominent timescale of solar magnetic activity at high latitudes; (2) the QBOs of the polar faculae are coherent in the two hemispheres, but the temporal (phase) and the spatial (amplitude) variations of solar QBOs occur unevenly on both hemispheres; and (3) for the 11-year period mode, the northern hemisphere begins three months earlier than that in the southern one. Moreover, the spatial and temporal distributions of the hemispheric QBOs differ from those of the 11-year Schwabe cycle mode in the two hemispheres. Our findings could be helpful to improve our knowledge on the physical origin of the spatial distribution of solar QBOs at high latitudes, and could also provide more constraints on solar dynamo models introduced to characterize the different components of the solar magnetic activity cycle., Comment: MNRAS

37. A Pore-Scale Investigation of Mineral Precipitation Driven Diffusivity Change at the Column-Scale

Abstract

Mineral precipitation affects the pore structure and thus transport properties of porous media. In this study, we investigated the pore-scale dynamics of precipitation in diffusion controlled systems and the resulting impacts on the effective diffusivity, using a micro-continuum reactive transport model. Forty two-dimensional pore structures representing both idealized and realistic geometries were simulated with consideration of different precipitation scenarios and rates. A homogeneous nucleation scenario reproduced patterns observed in previous experimental study showing mixing-induced precipitation, and a surface growth scenario captured the pattern for mineral precipitation on a substrate with the same or similar mineral structures. In all cases, local precipitation resulted in the reduction in the average porosity of the domain (Φ) until the cessation of diffusive transport and the termination of precipitation. The minimum porosity reached was referred to as the critical porosity (Φc). The effective diffusivity (Deff) decreased with Φ and dropped sharply to effectively zero, that is, the critical effective diffusivity (Deffc), as Φc was reached. These pore-scale dynamics can be captured by a revised (Formula presented.) relationship that explicitly considers the critical porosity and the corresponding effective diffusivity, and the pre-exponential coefficient and the exponent of the relationship varied with initial pore structure and the precipitation kinetics. Overall, the homogeneous nucleation scenario results in systematically larger Φc and coefficients that give rise to a sharper decrease in diffusivity as Φc is approached, compared to the surface growth scenario. The revised relationship was also implemented at continuum scale and used to examine column scale diffusivity change and reactions.

38. A new modeling framework for multi-scale simulation of hydraulic fracturing and production from unconventional reservoirs

Abstract

This paper describes a new modeling framework for microscopic to reservoir-scale simulations of hydraulic fracturing and production. The approach builds upon a fusion of two existing high-performance simulators for reservoir-scale behavior: the GEOS code for hydromechanical evolution during stimulation and the TOUGH+ code for multi-phase flow during production. The reservoir-scale simulations are informed by experimental and modeling studies at the laboratory scale to incorporate important micro-scale mechanical processes and chemical reactions occurring within the fractures, the shale matrix, and at the fracture-fluid interfaces. These processes include, among others, changes in stimulated fracture permeability as a result of proppant behavior rear-rangement or embedment, or mineral scale precipitation within pores and microfractures, at µm to cm scales. In our new modeling framework, such micro-scale testing and modeling provides upscaled hydromechanical parameters for the reservoir scale models. We are currently testing the new modeling framework using field data and core samples from the Hydraulic Fracturing Field Test (HFTS), a recent field-based joint research experiment with intense monitoring of hydraulic fracturing and shale production in the Wolfcamp Formation in the Permian Basin (USA). Below, we present our approach coupling the reservoir simulators GEOS and TOUGH+ informed by upscaled parameters from micro-scale experiments and modeling. We provide a brief overview of the HFTS and the available field data, and then discuss the ongoing application of our new workflow to the HFTS data set.

39. Systematic Regularity of Solar Coronal Rotation During the Time Interval 1939-2019

Abstract

Temporal variation of the solar coronal rotation appears to be very complex and its relevances to the eleven-year solar activity cycle are still unclear. Using the modified coronal index for the time interval from 1939 January 1 to 2019 May 31, the systematic regularities of the solar coronal rotation are investigated. Our main findings are as follows: (1) from a global point of view, the synodic coronal rotation period with a value of 27.5 days is the only significant period at the periodic scales shorter than 64 days; (2) the coronal rotation period exhibit an obviously decreasing trend during the considered time interval, implying the solar corona accelerates its global rotation rate in the long run; (3) there exist significant periods of 3.25, 6.13, 9.53, and 11.13 years in the period length of the coronal rotation, providing an evidence that the coronal rotation should be connected with the quasi-biennial oscillation, the eleven-year solar cycle, and the 22-year Hale cycle (or the magnetic activity reversal); and (4) the phase relationship between the coronal rotation period and the solar magnetic activity is not only time-dependent but also frequency-dependent. For a small range around the 11- year cycle band, there is a systematic trend in the phase, and the small mismatch in this band brings out the phase to drift. Abstract

The magnetic structure of the "nonmetallic metal" FeCrAs, a compound with the characters of both metals and insulators, was examined as a function of temperature using single-crystal neutron diffraction. The magnetic propagation vector was found to be $\mathit{k}$ = (1/3, 1/3, 0), and the magnetic reflections disppeared above $\mathit{T_{N}}$ = 116(1) K. In the ground state, the Cr sublattice shows an in-plane spiral antiferromagnetic order. The moment sizes of the Cr ions were found to be small, due to strong magnetic frustration in the distorted Kagome lattice or the itinerant nature of the Cr magnetism, and vary between 0.8 and 1.4 $\mu_{B}$ on different sites as expected for a spin-density-wave (SDW) type order. The upper limit of the moment on the Fe sublattice is estimated to be less than 0.1 $\mu_{B}$. With increasing temperature up to 95 K, the Cr moments cant out of the $\mathit{ab}$ plane gradually, with the in-plane components being suppressed and the out-of-plane components increasing in contrast. This spin-reorientation of Cr moments can explain the dip in the $\mathit{c}$-direction magnetic susceptibility and the kink in the magnetic order parameter at $\mathit{T_{O}}$ ~ 100 K, a second magnetic transition which was unexplained before. Abstract

Quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) of solar magnetic activities is intrinsic to dynamo mechanism, but still far from fully understood. In this work, the phase and amplitude asymmetry of solar QBO of Halpha flare activity in the northern and southern hemispheres is studied by the ensemble empirical mode decomposition, the cross-correlation analysis, and the wavelet transform technique. The following results are found: (1) solar QBO of Halpha flare index in the two hemispheres has a complicated phase relationship, but does not show any systematic regularity; (2) the solar cycle mode of solar Halpha flare index in the northern hemisphere generally leads that in the southern one by 9 months for the time interval from 1966 to 2014. The possible origin of these results is discussed.

Abstract

Neutrons produced in nuclear interactions initiated by cosmic-ray muons present an irreducible background to many rare-event searches, even in detectors located deep underground. Models for the production of these neutrons have been tested against previous experimental data, but the extrapolation to deeper sites is not well understood. Here we report results from an analysis of cosmogenically produced neutrons at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. A specific set of observables are presented, which can be used to benchmark the validity of GEANT4 physics models. In addition, the cosmogenic neutron yield, in units of $10^{-4}\;\text{cm}^{2}/\left(\text{g}\cdot\mu\right)$, is measured to be $7.28 \pm 0.09\;\text{stat.} ^{+1.59}_{-1.12}\;\text{syst.}$ in pure heavy water and $7.30 \pm 0.07\;\text{stat.} ^{+1.40}_{-1.02}\;\text{syst.}$ in NaCl-loaded heavy water. These results provide unique insights into this potential background source for experiments at SNOLAB.

Abstract

The crystal structure of the new superconductor UTe2 has been investigated for the first time at low temperature (LT) of 2.7 K, just closely above the superconducting transition temperature of about 1.7 K by single crystal neutron diffraction, in order to prove, whether the orthorhombic structure of type Immm (Nr. 71 Int. Tabl.) reported for room temperature (RT) persists down to the superconducting phase and can be considered as a parent symmetry for the development of spin triplet superconductivity. Our results show that the RT structure reported previously obtained by single crystal X-Ray diffraction indeed describes also the LT neutron diffraction data with high precision. No structural change from RT down to 2.7 K is observed. Detailed structural parameters for UTe2 at LT are reported.

Abstract

Neutron production in GeV-scale neutrino interactions is a poorly studied process. We have measured the neutron multiplicities in atmospheric neutrino interactions in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory experiment and compared them to the prediction of a Monte Carlo simulation using GENIE and a minimally modified version of GEANT4. We analyzed 837 days of exposure corresponding to Phase I, using pure heavy water, and Phase II, using a mixture of Cl in heavy water. Neutrons produced in atmospheric neutrino interactions were identified with an efficiency of $15.3\%$ and $44.3\%$, for Phase I and II respectively. The neutron production is measured as a function of the visible energy of the neutrino interaction and, for charged current quasi-elastic interaction candidates, also as a function of the neutrino energy. This study is also performed classifying the complete sample into two pairs of event categories: charged current quasi-elastic and non charged current quasi-elastic, and $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\nu_e$. Results show good overall agreement between data and Monte Carlo for both phases, with some small tension with a statistical significance below $2\sigma$ for some intermediate energies.

Abstract

One of the most fundamental and yet elusive collective phases of an interacting electron system is the quantum Wigner crystal (WC), an ordered array of electrons expected to form when the electrons' Coulomb repulsion energy eclipses their kinetic (Fermi) energy. In low-disorder, two-dimensional (2D) electron systems, the quantum WC is known to be favored at very low temperatures ($T$) and small Landau level filling factors ($\nu$), near the termination of the fractional quantum Hall states. This WC phase exhibits an insulating behavior, reflecting its pinning by the small but finite disorder potential. An experimental determination of a $T$ vs $\nu$ phase diagram for the melting of the WC, however, has proved to be challenging. Here we use capacitance measurements to probe the 2D WC through its effective screening as a function of $T$ and $\nu$. We find that, as expected, the screening efficiency of the pinned WC is very poor at very low $T$ and improves at higher $T$ once the WC melts. Surprisingly, however, rather than monotonically changing with increasing $T$, the screening efficiency shows a well-defined maximum at a $T$ which is close to the previously-reported melting temperature of the WC. Abstract

Superconductors with topological surface or edge states have been intensively explored for the prospect of realizing Majorana bound states, which obey non-Abelian statistics and are crucial for topological quantum computation. The traditional routes for making topological insulator/superconductor and semiconductor/superconductor heterostructures suffer fabrication difficulties and can only work at low temperature. Here, we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to directly observe the evolution of a topological transition of band structure nearby the Fermi level in two-dimensional high-T$_{c}$ superconductor FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$/SrTiO$_{3}$(001) monolayers, fully consistent with our theoretical calculations. Furthermore, evidence of edge states is revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy with assistance of theoretical calculations. Abstract

Temperature and field-dependent magnetization $M(H,T)$ measurements and neutron scattering study of a single crystal CeSb$_2$ are presented. Several anomalies in the magnetization curves have been confirmed at low magnetic field, i.e., 15.6 K, 12 K, and 9.8 K. These three transitions are all metamagnetic transitions (MMT), which shift to lower temperatures as the magnetic field increases. The anomaly at 15.6 K has been suggested as paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition. The anomaly located at around 12 K is antiferromagnetic-like transition, and this turning point will clearly split into two when the magnetic field $H\geq0.2$ T. Neutron scattering study reveals that the low temperature ground state of CeSb$_2$ orders antiferromagnetically with commensurate propagation wave vectors $\textbf{k}=(-1,\pm1/6,0)$ and $\textbf{k}=(\pm1/6,-1,0)$, with N\'eel temperature $T_N\sim9.8$ K. This transition is of first-order, as shown in the hysteresis loop observed by the field cooled cooling (FCC) and field cooled warming (FCW) processes., Comment: 7 pages,9 figures

Abstract

The proliferation of urban sensing, IoT, and big data in cities provides unprecedented opportunities for a deeper understanding of occupant behaviour and energy usage patterns at the urban scale. This enables data-driven building and energy models to capture the urban dynamics, specifically the intrinsic occupant and energy use behavioural profiles that are not usually considered in traditional models. Although there are related reviews, none investigated urban data for use in modelling occupant behaviour and energy use at multiple scales, from buildings to neighbourhood to city. This survey paper aims to fill this gap by providing a critical summary and analysis of the works reported in the literature. We present the different sources of occupant-centric urban data that are useful for data-driven modelling and categorise the range of applications and recent data-driven modelling techniques for urban behaviour and energy modelling, along with the traditional stochastic and simulation-based approaches. Finally, we present a set of recommendations for future directions in data-driven modelling of occupant behaviour and energy in buildings at the urban scale.

Abstract

A search has been performed for neutrinos from two sources, the hep reaction in the solar pp fusion chain and the νe component of the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), using the full dataset of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory with a total exposure of 2.47 kton-years after fiducialization. The hep search is performed using both a single-bin counting analysis and a likelihood fit. We find a best-fit flux that is compatible with solar model predictions while remaining consistent with zero flux, and set a one-sided upper limit of φhep

Abstract

The long baseline between the Earth and the Sun makes solar neutrinos an excellent test beam for exploring possible neutrino decay. The signature of such decay would be an energy-dependent distortion of the traditional survival probability which can be fit for using well-developed and high precision analysis methods. Here a model including neutrino decay is fit to all three phases of $^8$B solar neutrino data taken by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. This fit constrains the lifetime of neutrino mass state $\nu_2$ to be ${>8.08\times10^{-5}}$ s/eV at $90\%$ confidence. An analysis combining this SNO result with those from other solar neutrino experiments results in a combined limit for the lifetime of mass state $\nu_2$ of ${>1.04\times10^{-3}}$ s/eV at $99\%$ confidence.
