Recent reviews conclude that aphasia intervention is effective. However, replication and implementation require detailed reporting of intervention is and a specification of participant profiles. To date, reviews concentrate more on efficacy than on intervention reporting quality. The aim of this project is to review the descriptions of aphasia interventions and participants appearing in recent systematic reviews of aphasia intervention effectiveness. The relationship between the quality of these descriptions and the robustness of research design is explored, and the replicability of aphasia interventions is evaluated. The scope of our search was an analysis of the aphasia intervention studies included in the and EBRSR 2018 systematic reviews, and in the RCSLT 2014 literature synthesis. Intervention descriptions published separately from the intervention study (i.e. published online, in clinical tools, or a separate trial protocols) were not included. The criteria for inclusion were that participants had aphasia, the intervention involved language and/or communication, and included the following research designs: Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT), comparison or control, crossover design, case series. Exclusion criteria included non-SLT interventions, studies involving fewer than four participants, conference abstracts, studies not available in English. Studies were evaluated for completeness of intervention description using the TIDieR Checklist. Additionally, we rated the quality of patient and intervention description, with particular reference to replicability. Ninety-three studies were included. Only 14 studies (15%) had >50 participants. Fifty-six studies (60%) did not select participants with a specific aphasia profile, and a further 10 studies only described participants as non-fluent. Across the studies, an average of eight (of 12) TIDieR checklist items were given but information on where, tailoring, modification and fidelity items was rarely available. Studies that evaluated general aphasia intervention approaches tended to use RCT designs, whereas more specific intervention studies were more likely to use case series designs. : Group studies were generally under-powered and there was a paucity of research looking at specific aphasia interventions for specific aphasia profiles. There was a trade-off between the robustness of the design and the level of specificity of the intervention described. While the TIDieR framework is a useful guide to information which should be included in an intervention study, it is insufficiently sensitive for assessing replicability. The Fawn-hooded rat has long been used as a model for various peripheral and central disorders and the data available indicate that the social behavior of this strain may be compromised. However, a thorough description of the Fawn-hooded rat is unavailable in this regard. The objective of the present study was to investigate various aspects of the Fawn-hooded rat’s social behavior in depth. Our results show that several facets of socio-communicational behavior are impaired in the RjIbm(m):FH strain, including defective ultrasonic vocalizations in pups upon maternal deprivation, reduced social play in adolescence and impaired social novelty discrimination in adulthood. In addition, Fawn-hooded rats exhibited heightened tactile sensitivity and hyperactivity. The defects observed were comparable to those induced by prenatal valproate exposure, a widely utilized model of autism spectrum disorder. Further on, the pro-social drug R-baclofen (0.25–1 mg/kg) reversed the autistic-like defects observed in Fawn-hooded rats, specifically the deficiency in ultrasonic vocalization, tactile sensitivity and social novelty discrimination endpoints. In conclusion, the asocial, hypersensitive and hyperactive phenotype as well as the responsivity to R-baclofen indicate this variant of the Fawn-hooded rat strain may serve as a model of autism spectrum disorder and could be useful in the identification of novel drug candidates.

Pikeperch Sander lucioperca is a species of increasing presence in recirculation aquaculture system and the vast majority of thus far research was dedicated to its indoor farming. Concerning the present pond infrastructure in Central and East Europe, it is of interest to evaluate the intensive pond-connected system for pikeperch rearing. Therefore, the present study evaluated the grow-out performance in recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) and in-pond-raceway (IPR) in triplicated tanks. A 16-week trial with 1-year-old pikeperch (mean weight 215.7 ± 8.1 g RAS and 217.7 ± 2.6 g IPR) was conducted from June to October evaluating both culture and welfare parameters. Significantly higher final mean weight (443.1 ± 17.5 vs 400.6 ± 13.2) and lower feed conversion (2.1 ± 0.1 vs 3.0 ± 0.1) was obtained in fish reared in IPR. Cortisol levels were overall higher in the RAS group throughout the trial being significantly higher at the first and last sampling. Elevated lysozyme levels were found in IPR in the first half of the trial, while further on they were higher in RAS being significantly higher compared to IPR in middle sampling. Thus, both in terms of culture performance and fish welfare, IPR proves aptness for pikeperch rearing. This study presents the first insight into the suitability of pond-connected intensive rearing of pikeperch describing IPR as a promising system for final grow-out during the growing season. More comprehensive studies in terms of stocking densities and growing period are required to explore the full potential of pikeperch outdoor farming.

Abstract Background Human alveolar echinococcosis (AE) caused by Echinococcus multilocularis is an underreported, often misdiagnosed and mistreated parasitic disease mainly due to its low incidence. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of human AE patients in Hungary for the first time. Method Between 2003 and 2018, epidemiological and clinical data of suspected AE patients were collected retrospectively from health database management systems. Results This case series included a total of 16 AE patients. The mean age of patients was 53 years (range: 24–78 years). The sex ratio was 1:1. Four patients (25%) revealed no recurrence after radical surgery and adjuvant albendazole (ABZ) therapy. For five patients (31.3%) with unresectable lesions, a stabilization of lesions with ABZ treatment was achieved. In seven patients (43.8%), progression of AE was documented. The mean diagnostic delay was 33 months (range: 1–122 months). Three AE related deaths (fatality rate 18.8%) were recorded. Conclusions AE is an emerging infectious disease in Hungary with a high fatality rate since based on our results, almost every fifth AE patient died in the study period. Differential diagnosis and appropriate surgical and medical therapy for AE is an urging challenge for clinicians in Hungary, as well as in some other European countries where E. multilocularis is prevalent.

Abstract Background Mycoplasma anserisalpingitidis is a waterfowl pathogen that mainly infects geese, can cause significant economic losses and is present worldwide. With the advance of whole genome sequencing technologies, new methods are available for the researchers; one emerging methodology is the core genome Multi-Locus Sequence Typing (cgMLST). The core genome contains a high percentage of the coding DNA sequence (CDS) set of the studied strains. The cgMLST schemas are powerful genotyping tools allowing for the investigation of potential epidemics, and precise and reliable classification of the strains. Although whole genome sequences of M. anserisalpingitidis strains are available, to date, no cgMLST schema has been published for this species. Results In this study, Illumina short reads of 81 M. anserisalpingitidis strains were used, including samples from Hungary, Poland, Sweden, and China. Draft genomes were assembled with the SPAdes software and analysed with the online available chewBBACA program. User made modifications in the program enabled analysis of mycoplasmas and provided similar results as the conventional SeqSphere+ software. The threshold of the presence of CDS in the strains was set to 93% due to the quality of the draft genomes, resulting in the most accurate and robust schema. Three hundred thirty-one CDSs constituted our cgMLST schema (representing 42,77% of the whole CDS set of M. anserisalpingitidis ATCC BAA-2147), and a Neighbor joining tree was created using the allelic profiles. The correlation was observed between the strains’ cgMLST profile and geographical origin; however, strains from the same integration but different locations also showed close relationship. Strains isolated from different tissue samples of the same animal revealed highly similar cgMLST profiles. Conclusions The Neighbor joining tree from the cgMLST schema closely resembled the real-life spatial and temporal relationships of the strains. The incongruences between background data and the cgMLST profile in the strains from the same integration can be because of the higher probability of contacts between the flocks. This schema can help with the epidemiological investigation and can be used as a basis for further studies.

Abstract Background Mycoplasma anserisalpingitidis causes significant economic losses in the domestic goose (Anser anser) industry in Europe. As 95% of the global goose production is in China where the primary species is the swan goose (Anser cygnoides), it is crucial to know whether the agent is present in this region of the world. Results Purulent cloaca and purulent or necrotic phallus inflammation were observed in affected animals which represented 1–2% of a swan goose breeding flock (75,000 animals) near Guanghzou, China, in September 2019. From twelve sampled animals the cloaca swabs of five birds (three male, two female) were demonstrated to be M. anserisalpingitidis positive by PCR and the agent was successfully isolated from the samples of three female geese. Based on whole genome sequence analysis, the examined isolate showed high genetic similarity (84.67%) with the European isolates. The antibiotic susceptibility profiles of two swan goose isolates, determined by microbroth dilution method against 12 antibiotics and an antibiotic combination were also similar to the European domestic goose ones with tylvalosin and tiamulin being the most effective drugs. Conclusions To the best of our knowledge this is the first description of M. anserisalpingitidis infection in swan goose, thus the study highlights the importance of mycoplasmosis in the goose industry on a global scale.
