Abstract

A unique crossed electrode array is described for real-time volume ultrasound imaging. The studies have shown that by using a 288-element crossed electrode pattern, a large field of view volume images at real-time frame rates is obtained, with image contrast and resolution comparable to the results obtained by using a conventional 128-element linear phased array.

Abstract

The effect of electromechanical cross talk in high-frequency (greater than30 MHz) kerfless annular arrays is investigated, and finite-element model predictions of the radiation patterns from arrays are compared to predictions from an ideal model without cross talk and with experimental measurements. When the same element dimensions are used in both models, a significant difference between the amplitude of the pedestal secondary lobe in the radiation pattern was found.

Abstract

The design, fabrication and performance of miniature high-frequency annular arrays are discussed. An empirical formula that predicts the average level of secondary lobes in the radiation pattern as a function of the geometry and bandwidth of the array is also introduced.

Abstract

We measure, in a single experiment, both the radiation pressure and the torque due to a wide variety of\ud propagating acoustic vortex beams. The results validate, for the first time directly, the theoretically\ud predicted ratio of the orbital angular momentum to linear momentum in a propagating beam. We\ud experimentally determine this ratio using simultaneous measurements of both the levitation force and\ud the torque on an acoustic absorber exerted by a broad range of helical ultrasonic beams produced by a\ud 1000-element matrix transducer array. In general, beams with helical phase fronts have been shown to\ud contain orbital angular momentum as the result of the azimuthal component of the Poynting vector around\ud the propagation axis. Theory predicts that for both optical and acoustic helical beams the ratio of the\ud angular momentum current of the beam to the power should be given by the ratio of the beam’s\ud topological charge to its angular frequency. This direct experimental observation that the ratio of the\ud torque to power does convincingly match the expected value (given by the topological charge to angular\ud frequency ratio of the beam) is a fundamental result.
