Bosonic condensates of spin-less non-interacting particles confined on a ring cannot propagate circular periodic currents once rotation symmetry of the system is broken. However a persistent current may appear due to inter-particle interactions exceeding some critical strength. In this up-critical regime breaking of the symmetry between the clockwise and anticlockwise rotations takes place. We consider this symmetry-breaking scenario in the case of a spinor condensate of exciton polaritons trapped on a ring split by a potential barrier. Due to the intrinsic symmetry of the effective spin-orbit interaction which stems from the linear splitting between transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic microcavity modes, the potential barrier blocks the circulating current and imposes linear polarization patterns. On the other hand, circularly polarized polaritons form circular currents propagating in opposite directions with equal absolute values of angular momentum. In the presence of inter-particle interactions, the symmetry of clockwise and anticlockwise currents can be broken spontaneously. We describe several symmetry-breaking scenarios which imply either restoration of the global condensate rotation or the onset of the circular polarization in the symmetry-broken state., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Recently, split-ring bosonic condensates of exciton polaritons have been proposed for realisation of qubits. We formulate an analytical model of a polariton condensate in a one-dimensional ring split by a delta-function potential. The persistent current is stopped by the potential defect embedded in a scalar condensate of non-interacting particles, however, it reappears in the presence of an up-critical non-linearity. The nonlinear supercurrents are characterised by fractional orbital momenta while their eigenfunctions may feature grey or dark solitons. The coupling between the spin and the orbital angular momentum of a spinor condensate affects persistent currents crucially. We show that the spin-orbit interaction (SOI) induces the net superfluid current in the condensate with a spatially uniform spin polarisation. We also find solutions where the SOI-induced currents of two spin components of the condensate propagate in opposite directions. The corresponding states of spinor condensates obey a combined mirror reflection and the spin-flip symmetry.

Linear carbon-based materials such as polyyne and cumulene oligomers provide a versatile platform for nano-physics and engineering. Direct gap quasi-1D polyyne structures are promising for the observation of strong and unusual excitonic eects arising due to the two-dimensional quantum connement. Recently, we reported on the observation of sharp exciton peaks in low temperature photoluminescence spectra of polyyne chains. Here, we analyse the time-resolved optical response of this system. We extend the non-local dielectric response theory to predict the exciton radiative lifetime dependence on the band-gap value and on the length of the chain. Recently, we have experimentally observed signatures of sharp exciton peaks in the photoluminescence spectra of bundles of monoatomic carbon chains stabilized by gold nanoparticles and deposited on a glass substrate. Here, we estimate the characteristic energies of excitonic transitions in this complex quasi-one-dimensional nano-system with use of the variational method. We show that the characteristic energy scale for the experimentally observed excitonic fine structure is governed by the interplay between the hopping energy in a Van der Waals quasicrystal formed by parallel carbon chains, the neutral-charged exciton splitting and the positive-negative trion splitting. These three characteristic energies are an order of magnitude lower than the direct exciton binding energy., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We studied monoatomic linear carbon chains stabilised by gold nanoparticles attached to their ends and deposited on a solid substrate. We observe spectral features of straight chains containing from 8 to 24 atoms. Low temperature PL spectra reveal characteristic triplet fine-structures that repeat themselves for carbon chains of different lengths. The triplet is invariably composed of a sharp intense peak accompanied by two broader satellites situated 15 and 40 meV below the main peak. We interpret these resonances as an edge-state neutral exciton, positively and negatively charged trions, respectively. The time-resolved PL shows that the radiative lifetime of the observed quasiparticles is about 1 ns, and it increases with the increase of the length of the chain. At high temperatures a non-radiative exciton decay channel appears due to the thermal hopping of carriers between parallel carbon chains.
