Computer Science - Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing - Abstract
Coordination services and protocols are critical components of distributed systems and are essential for providing consistency, fault tolerance, and scalability. However, due to lack of a standard benchmarking tool for distributed coordination services, coordination service developers/researchers either use a NoSQL standard benchmark and omit evaluating consistency, distribution, and fault-tolerance; or create their own ad-hoc microbenchmarks and skip comparability with other services. In this paper, we analyze and compare known and widely used distributed coordination services, their evaluations, and the tools used to benchmark those systems. We identify important requirements of distributed coordination service benchmarking, like the metrics and parameters that need to be evaluated and their evaluation setups and tools.

- Abstract
The aim of this study is to share the experiences and the collaborations carried out within the sector during the pandemic period, in a graduation project which is focused on university-industry cooperation - in order to make the role of the designer in the sector more effective, to transform education into a comprehensive sectoral experience for students and to offer the sector the experience of working with the designer at Department of Industrial Design, Eskisehir Technical University. The method of the research is a case study examining by designing it with a holistic single-case design since it is a single, representative, and typical case. In the case study, the research group consists of the students who were enrolled in the 2019-2020 spring term graduation project course, academic supervisors and company mentors at Eskisehir Technical University, Turkiye. The result of the study is that pandemic opened the door to new educational experiences for design academics, students and companies. This sharp bend mainly affected the implementation processes of one-on-one lessons, just like the design studio, which we define as the heart of design education. It has also paved the way for different online interactive educational tools and platforms to be used for the educational components of the design of the process.

The process of RNA splicing is fundamental in contributing to proteomic diversity and regulating gene expression. Dysregulation of splicing is associated with various human disorders, including cancer. Through functional studies, this study sought to examine the potential impact of seven variants within six inherited cancer-related genes on RNA splicing patterns in Turkish cancer patients. Upon detecting variants using Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), we used Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) and Sanger sequencing to elucidate the effects of these variants on splicing. Three of the seven variants demonstrated no discernible effect on RNA, while four exhibited pathogenic characteristics. Specifically, the variants APC c.532-1G>A rs1554072547, BRCA1c.4358-3A>G rs1567779966, BRCA2c.7436-1G>C rs81002830 and MSH3c.1897-1G>A rs1744149615 were identified as pathogenic, while the variants BLMc.4076+4T>G rs183176301, RB1c.2489+2T>C rs1555294636 and RB1c.1050-2A>G rs? were found to be benign from a splicing perspective. These findings highlight the importance of verifying the precise consequences of splice-site variants through experimental analysis, given their potential implications for genetic disorders and cancer predisposition. This research contributes to the understanding of splice-site variants in inherited cancer predisposition, particularly among Turkish cancer patients. It emphasizes the necessity for further exploration into the mechanisms and functional consequences of alternative splicing for potential therapeutic interventions in cancer.

- Abstract
The purpose of this research is to determine the effect of digital stories on the listening comprehension skills of primary school 4th grade students. For this purpose, the research has carried out with a quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group. The sample of the research consisted of 52 students studying in two different 4th grade branches of a public primary school in the second semester of the 2018-2019 academic year. The stories transferred to digital in the research have selected from the texts in 3 different Turkish textbooks at the 4th grade level of primary school published by the Ministry of National Education and taught to students in previous years. 8 narrative texts from the themes of "My Beautiful Country Turkey" and "Production, Consumption and Efficiency" in the textbooks have converted into digital through digital design programs. During the implementation process, the animations of 8 stories transferred to digital have watched by the students in the experimental group, and the students in the control group have read and listened to the same story texts by the teacher. The Listening Comprehension Test has used to determine the listening comprehension achievement scores of the students in the experimental and control groups at the beginning and end of the application process. As a result of the research, it has determined that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test achievement scores of the students in the experimental group, where the stories have played digitally.

Computer Science - Robotics - Abstract
Physical interaction between individuals plays an important role in human motor learning and performance during shared tasks. Using robotic devices, researchers have studied the effects of dyadic haptic interaction mostly focusing on the upper-limb. Developing infrastructure that enables physical interactions between multiple individuals' lower limbs can extend the previous work and facilitate investigation of new dyadic lower-limb rehabilitation schemes. We designed a system to render haptic interactions between two users while they walk in multi-joint lower-limb exoskeletons. Specifically, we developed an infrastructure where desired interaction torques are commanded to the individual lower-limb exoskeletons based on the users' kinematics and the properties of the virtual coupling. In this pilot study, we demonstrated the capacity of the platform to render different haptic properties (e.g., soft and hard), different haptic connection types (e.g., bidirectional and unidirectional), and connections expressed in joint space and in task space. With haptic connection, dyads generated synchronized movement, and the difference between joint angles decreased as the virtual stiffness increased. This is the first study where multi-joint dyadic haptic interactions are created between lower-limb exoskeletons. This platform will be used to investigate effects of haptic interaction on motor learning and task performance during walking, a complex and meaningful task for gait rehabilitation., Comment: 6 pages, 9 figures, accepted at 2023 IEEE International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics (ICORR)

Abstract Background Transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUS-Bx) is the gold standard diagnostic method for prostate cancer. In people with low health literacy, accurate and early diagnosis rates decrease, making it difficult to maintain health and compliance with treatment. In our study, we investigated how health literacy and sociocultural parameters affected compliance and awareness in patients with suspected prostate cancer, for whom TRUS-Bx was planned. Methods In the study, 98 male patients aged 50–80 years, recommended for TRUS-Bx, were included in our study. The data including age, prostate-specific antigen, prostate volume, digital rectal examination findings, education leveland area of residence of the patients included in the study were recorded. Health Literacy Survey-Turkey- Questionnaire 47 and Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 forms were completed by the patients who agreed to participate in the study, and their scores were recorded. Patients scheduled for TRUS-Bx were divided into two groups: those who attended their appointments and underwent the biopsy, and those who did not attend their scheduled appointments. The effect of health literacy and other parameters on the TRUS-Bx requirement was examined between the two groups. Furthermore, 52 patients who underwent TRUS-Bx were divided into two groups as malignancy (malignant) detected and not-detected (benign) patients according to the pathology results, and the parameters were analyzed separately for these groups. Results The education level of the patients who underwent the TRUS-Bx procedure was found to be statistically higher (p = 0.026). Health Literacy Survey-Turkey- Questionnaire 47 and Turkish Health Literacy Scale-32 scores were statistically significantly higher in the TRUS-Bx group (p = 0.001, p

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) poses a significant global health threat, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. Biomarkers and scoring systems play a crucial role in diagnosing, assessing severity, and guiding treatment decisions for CAP patients. Biomarkers like C reactive protein, procalcitonin, and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio aid in diagnosis and severity assessment, while scoring systems such as CURB-65 and Pneumonia Severity Index classify patients into risk categories. Emerging biomarkers (uremia, elevated respiratory rate, hypotension, and age ≥ 65) like serum amyloid A and S100 proteins show promise in predicting disease severity and prognosis. However, further research is needed to determine their precise roles and clinical utility in CAP management.

- Abstract
Language is an important tool of communication, especially in a foreign setting. Foreign language teachers, help their students to access foreign experiences by reason of their ability to communicate with foreign nationals. Teachers' motivation however influences foreign language education and its effectiveness. The aim of this study is to examine the predictive effect of foreign language teachers' motivations on their attitudes towards distance education. For this purpose, 356 foreign language teachers who teach in Turkey (240 females, 116 males) were reached. The ages of the teachers are in the range of 23-64 and the mean is 41.9 (SD =9.44). Personal Information Form, Attitude Scale Toward Distance Learning (ASTDL), and Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) were applied to the participating teachers. Multiple regression was used to analyze the data in the study. Accordingly, extrinsic motivation predicts both positive and negative attitudes towards distance education. In addition, motivation predicts a positive attitude.

Marble dust and fly ash are waste materials and used in various area and industries as an additive material. However, there are still significant amounts of marble dust and fly ash left as waste. Therefore, the reuse of these wastes provides benefits to reduce construction costs and increase sustainability. In this study, a laboratory testing program was conducted on granular soil specimens amended with marble dust and fly ash. The specimens were prepared with granular soil and marble dust-fly ash at different mixing ratios. They were compacted with standard and modified Proctor energies. The specimens were subjected to unconfined compression, California bearing ratio, and freezing-thawing tests. The results of the study show that the strength of a specimen is dependent on the additive ratio, the curing period, compaction energy, and the number of freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. Generally, unconfined compressive strength (qu) and California bearing ratio (CBR) increased with additive materials, curing times, and high compaction energy. qu decreased and weight loss increased with increasing additives and increasing F-T cycles.

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The upgrade of the CMS experiment for the high luminosity operation of the LHC comprises the replacement of the current endcap calorimeter by a high granularity sampling calorimeter (HGCAL). The electromagnetic section of the HGCAL is based on silicon sensors interspersed between lead and copper (or copper tungsten) absorbers. The hadronic section uses layers of stainless steel as an absorbing medium and silicon sensors as an active medium in the regions of high radiation exposure, and scintillator tiles directly readout by silicon photomultipliers in the remaining regions. As part of the development of the detector and its readout electronic components, a section of a silicon-based HGCAL prototype detector along with a section of the CALICE AHCAL prototype was exposed to muons, electrons and charged pions in beam test experiments at the H2 beamline at the CERN SPS in October 2018. The AHCAL uses the same technology as foreseen for the HGCAL but with much finer longitudinal segmentation. The performance of the calorimeters in terms of energy response and resolution, longitudinal and transverse shower profiles is studied using negatively charged pions, and is compared to GEANT4 predictions. This is the first report summarizing results of hadronic showers measured by the HGCAL prototype using beam test data., Comment: Accepted for publication by JINST

HG Finance - Abstract
Chapter 1 discusses the investors' reactions to events due to economic policy uncertainty, and changes in the regulatory environment. Using the financial market players' actions such as governments' during an uncertain environment and firms' information environment including financial and non-financial disclosures, this thesis makes an introduction to investors' stance on main uncertainty periods and regulatory changes. In Chapter 2, I examine the investors' confidence in the UK government's actions to achieve its Brexit goal. Using an objective approach where I employ main Brexit events (the UK Referendum vote on June 23, 2016, Triggering of Article 50 on March 29, 2017, Brexit day on January 2020, etc.), I investigate the investors' perception of the UK government actions to achieve its Brexit goal. This chapter tries to find out whether the UK government's actions are taken for granted by the investors to complete its Brexit goal. Chapter 3 shows that the bank opacity provides sufficient information about the banks' credit risk under a supervision change of Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). In this context, I break down credit risk into its factors of default and information risk, then focus on the effect of bank opacity (i.e., information risk) on the pricing of a credit risk after the introduction of SSM. In Chapter 4, I examine the effect of banks' information environment due to their non-financial disclosures (sustainability disclosures) on their creditworthiness, in particular, using ESG scores, on the pricing of CDS spreads. In this chapter, I focus on ESG scores, particularly ESG governance pillars, to investigate investors' trust in banks after the European debt crisis by assessing the link between credit risk and ESG scores. In Chapter 5, I examine the nexus between ESG activities and credit risk of non-financial firms after the Covid-19 crisis. This chapter questions whether improvement in ESG scores is beneficial for non-financial firms to decrease their credit risk, i.e., increasing their creditworthiness. Chapter 6 concludes this thesis by highlighting significant remarks, limitations, and avenues for future research.

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3b) were higher in the HP group (P

IntroductionDespite being a natural feline behavior, scratching can become undesirable from a human perspective when directed at household items. This complex behavior can stem from various motivations, ranging from individual cat characteristics to environmental factors. This study investigates the factors influencing the increased level of undesirable scratching behavior in domestic cats, considering both cat-related and environmental aspects.MethodsData from 1,211 cats were collected for this study. An online questionnaire comprising three sections was utilized. The first section gathered caregiver demographics, while the subsequent section examined aspects of cats’ daily routines, social interactions, environments, behaviours, and temperaments. The final section assessed the frequency and intensity of undesirable scratching behavior in cats. Scratching behavior was evaluated based on a combined scratching index.ResultsThe study suggests that the presence of a child may be associated with scratching episodes in the home environment. Additionally, factors such as play duration, playfulness, and nocturnal activity were identified as significant contributors to heightened scratching levels (p ≤ 0.05). Aggressiveness and disruptiveness also played significant roles in increased scratching behavior (p ≤ 0.05). The location of scratching posts emerged as a significant factor, with posts placed in areas frequented by the cat being more effective in redirecting scratching behavior (p ≤ 0.05).DiscussionThis study reveals several significant associations between cat characteristics, nocturnal activity and play, as well as the environment. It underscores the multifaceted nature of undesirable scratching behavior and emphasizes the importance of comprehensively understanding both the individual characteristics of the cat and its environment to effectively address this behavior.

At the heart of BunchBFT is a novel design called the cluster-based approach that divides the replicas into clusters of replicas. By combining this cluster-based approach with hierarchical communications across clusters, piggybacking techniques for sending messages across clusters, and decentralized leader election for each cluster, BunchBFT achieves high performance and scalability. We also prove that BunchBFT satisfies the basic safety and liveness properties of Byzantine consensus. We implemented a prototype of BunchBFT in our PaxiBFT framework to show that the BunchBFT can improve the MirBFT's throughput by 10x, depending on the available bandwidth on wide-area links., Comment: 6 pages

- Abstract
The study aimed to investigate how social studies teachers give information about the immediate environment in lessons and determine course objectives through non-formal school activities. The study sample consisted of 38 social studies teachers working in Kirikkale province in the 2018-2019 academic year. The data were analyzed with content analysis methods. The data were collected with a semi-structured interview form, were processed in SPSS 17 and Microsoft Excel software and interpreted in relation to the relevant the literature. In the interview form, the teachers were grouped by certain variables: gender, professional experience, and settlement type of school. The study concluded that social studies teachers did not have adequate knowledge about the immediate environment and thus they could not transfer it to students. Although participant social studies teachers claimed to give information and examples during the course, their students expressed that their teachers did not give any examples. The study results also indicated that teachers did not sufficiently organize non-formal school activities to teach the immediate environment. Thusly, it is suggested that social studies teachers should be assisted in learning the immediate environment and should participate in training on non-formal teaching methods.

- Abstract
As a result of increasing COVID-19 cases all over the world, schools continued to provide education distantly since the beginning of 2020. This immediate shift is considered as both a factor of anxiety and an area of anxiety. This study aims to investigate the underlying reasons of anxieties among secondary school students with regard to five dimensions: health-related issues, technological opportunities, domiciliary conditions, course-related issues and privacy-related issues. A survey design was adopted. The research was carried out with participation of 156 secondary school students of a state school in Istanbul. Data was collected through the Anxiety Sources Questionnaire in Distance Education developed by the researchers. The underlying reasons of anxiety of secondary school students is presented under five categories. The results revealed that students were mainly concerned about face-to-face exams; problems related to devices; isolation; their inefficiency to learn the content and sharing their private settings.

- Abstract
Today, industrial design education is faced with a new group of students who have met daily life technologies from a very early age. The transformations in educational environments are becoming more and more important for project-based and student-centered design education model. Understanding the needs and expectations of the changing student profile has become essential for design education, which puts new and original outputs as the main objective. Students' expectations of having a say in their own learning environments also provide an important opportunity for them to play an active role in the focus of this change. The aim of this study is to determine the design criteria of a new learning tool in line with the needs and expectations of the new generation industrial design students with a student-oriented approach. Participatory Design workshops were organized to expose expectations of the current learners about a new Design Brief in a digital and online medium. In this qualitative study conducted with participatory design method, gamification elements were used to increase students' motivation, interest, and participation. Design criteria for a new generation design brief have been introduced with participatory design method. All suggestions were found to indicate a more interactive structure depending on the variable and cyclical structure of the design.

- Abstract
The refereed and periodical journals, which form the basis of scientific communication, have different functions such as quality control, archival creation, the promotion of authors, and information distribution. Journals that previously addressed wider audiences and disciplines are becoming increasingly thematic today and are beginning to address a particular area of focus. Therefore, this study aims to reveal the publication policies of academic journals in Turkey which are categorized under the theme of Geography. For this purpose, academic Geography journals published in Turkey have been analyzed using a content analysis method. Also, a bibliometric analysis process has been applied to academics who publish in these journals and use the keywords geography education in their work as revealed by an academic search in Higher Education Council (referred to as YÖK in Turkish). A Journal Review Form was used to analyze data from the study, which included seven journals. From this form, the aim, scope, index, frequency of publication, type of publication, and temporal change of journals can be determined and the general trends for these journals ascertained. As a result of the research, it is determined that six journals have been published over 20 years, albeit with interruptions, while one journal was in its 9th year of publication.

Computer Science - Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing - Abstract
This paper describes BigBFT, a multi-leader Byzantine fault tolerance protocol that achieves high throughput and scalable consensus in blockchain systems. BigBFT achieves this by (1) enabling every node to be a leader that can propose and order the blocks in parallel, (2) piggybacking votes within rounds, (3) pipelining blocks across rounds, and (4) using only two communication steps to order blocks in the common case. BigBFT has an amortized communication cost of $O(n)$ over $n$ requests. We evaluate BigBFT's performance both analytically, using back-of-the-envelope load formulas to construct a cost analysis, and also empirically by implementing it in our PaxiBFT framework. Our evaluation compares BigBFT with PBFT, Tendermint, Streamlet, and Hotstuff under various workloads using deployments of 4 to 20 nodes. Our results show that BigBFT outperforms PBFT, Tendermint, Streamlet, and Hotstuff protocols either in terms of latency (by up to $70\%$) or in terms of throughput (by up to $190\%$)., Comment: 11

The Impostor Phenomenon is a psychological phenomenon characterized by an individual's inability to internalize their success despite substantial evidence, leading them to feel like a fraud in their status. This phenomenon is increasingly recognized as an important factor in the success and survival of organizations. However, despite its practical and scientific importance, the Impostor Phenomenon has a relatively short history in the field of organizational behavior. Research into the impostor phenomenon in organizational behavior has seen significant growth between 2003 and 2022. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the research status of this topic during this period and to determine the main and sub-themes in which this concept has been examined in academic contexts. The current study focuses on determining which main and sub-themes this concept is examined in academic context. In the study, the articles in the web of science database were examined. The articles were analyzed by performing Bibliometrics analysis with the Vosviewer program. It is aimed to determine and cluster the network relations of the concepts with each other. It has been determined that five basic clusters are word or concept-based representation of imposter phenomenon. These clusters are named as “Organizational Psychology”, "Business Management”, “Sustainable Business”, “"Human Resource Management and Positive Psychology” and "Organizational Change Management."
