In the teaching profession, the phases of high and low recruitment needs seem to alternate in cyclical waves. In Germany, this phenomenon is referred to as the "pork cycle" (Hanau 1928). It is based on economic considerations and describes the mismatch between demand and supply on the market for teachers. This leads to temporary crises in the school system and to controversial discussions about "special measures" to master the crisis. The suggested measures should create a pathway to the teaching profession by compensatory courses for persons who are did not attend an undergraduate teacher education program. The paper discusses such crises, looks at opportunities for career changers on their way into the teaching profession and considers implication for the for university education.
