The NOEMA formIng Cluster survEy (NICE) is a large program targeting 69 massive galaxy group candidates at $z>2$ in six deep fields. We report spectroscopic confirmation of eight groups at $1.65\leq z\leq3.61$ in COSMOS. Homogeneously selected as significant overdensities of red IRAC sources with red Herschel colors, four groups are confirmed by CO and [CI] with NOEMA 3mm observations, three are confirmed with ALMA, and one is confirmed by H$\alpha$ from Subaru/FMOS. We constructed the integrated FIR SEDs for the eight groups, obtaining total IR SFR $=260-1300~{\rm M_\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$. We adopted six methods to estimate the dark matter masses, including stellar mass to halo mass relations, overdensity with galaxy bias, and NFW profile fitting to radial stellar mass density. We found the radial stellar mass density are consistent with a NFW profile, supporting that they are collapsed structures hosted by a single dark matter halo. The best halo mass estimates are $\log(M_{\rm h}/{\rm M_\odot})=12.8-13.7$ with uncertainty of 0.3 dex. From halo mass estimates, we derive baryonic accretion rate ${\rm BAR}=(1-8)\times10^{3}\,{\rm M_{\odot}/yr}$ for this sample. We find a quasi-linear correlation between the integrated SFR/BAR and the theoretical halo mass limit for cold streams, $M_{\rm stream}/M_{\rm h}$, with ${\rm SFR/BAR}=10^{-0.46\pm0.22}\left({M_{\rm stream}/M_{\rm h}}\right)^{0.71\pm0.16}$ with a scatter of $0.40\,{\rm dex}$. Further, we compare halo masses and stellar masses with simulations, and find all structures are consistent with being progenitors of $M_{\rm h}(z=0)>10^{14}\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$ galaxy clusters, and the most massive central galaxies have stellar masses consistent with brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) progenitors in the TNG300 simulation. [Abridged] In recent years, conflicting results have provided an uncertain view of the dust-attenuated properties of $z>4$ star-forming galaxies (SFGs). To solve this, we used the deepest data publicly available in COSMOS to build a mass-complete ($>10^{9.5}\,M_{\odot}$) sample of SFGs at $4M_\ast)$ converges at $M_\ast<10^{9}\,M_\odot$ and is dominated by SFGs with $M_\ast\sim10^{9.5-10.5}\,M_\odot$. The fraction of the cosmic SFRD that is attenuated by dust, ${\rm SFRD}_{\rm IR}(>M_\ast)/ {\rm SFRD}(>M_\ast)$, is $90\pm4\%$ for $M_\ast\,=\,10^{10}\,M_\odot$, $68\pm10\%$ for $M_\ast=10^{8.9}\,M_\odot$ (i.e., $0.03\times M^\star$; $M^\star$ being the characteristic stellar mass of SFGs) and this value converges to $60\pm10\%$ for $M_\ast=10^{8}\,M_\odot$. We present a model of radio continuum emission associated with star formation (SF) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) implemented in the Shark semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. SF emission includes free-free and synchrotron emission, which depend on the free-electron density and the rate of core-collapse supernovae with a minor contribution from supernova remnants, respectively. AGN emission is modelled based on the jet production rate, which depends on the black hole mass, accretion rate and spin, and includes synchrotron self-absorption. Shark reproduces radio luminosity functions (RLFs) at 1.4 GHz and 150 MHz for 0 $\leq$ z $\leq$ 4, and scaling relations between radio luminosity, star formation rate and infrared luminosity of galaxies in the local and distant universe in good agreement with observations. The model also reproduces observed number counts of radio sources from 150 MHz to 8.4 GHz to within a factor of two on average, though larger discrepancies are seen at the very bright fluxes at higher frequencies. We use this model to understand how the radio continuum emission from radio-quiet AGNs can affect the measured RLFs of galaxies. We find current methods to exclude AGNs from observational samples result in large fractions of radio-quiet AGNs contaminating the "star-forming galaxies" selection and a brighter end to the resulting RLFs. We investigate how this effects the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) and show that AGN contamination can lead to evolution of the IRRC with redshift. The tight relationship between infrared luminosity (L$_\mathrm{TIR}$) and 1.4 GHz radio continuum luminosity (L$_\mathrm{1.4GHz}$) has proven useful for understanding star formation free from dust obscuration. Infrared emission in star-forming galaxies typically arises from recently formed, dust-enshrouded stars, whereas radio synchrotron emission is expected from subsequent supernovae. By leveraging the wealth of ancillary far-ultraviolet - far-infrared photometry from the Deep Extragalactic VIsible Legacy Survey (DEVILS) and Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) surveys, combined with 1.4 GHz observations from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey and Deep Investigation of Neutral Gas Origins (DINGO) projects, we investigate the impact of timescale differences between far-ultraviolet - far-infrared and radio-derived star formation rate (SFR) tracers. We examine how the SED-derived star formation histories (SFH) of galaxies can be used to explain discrepancies in these SFR tracers, which are sensitive to different timescales. Galaxies exhibiting an increasing SFH have systematically higher L$_\mathrm{TIR}$ and SED-derived SFRs than predicted from their 1.4 GHz radio luminosity. This indicates that insufficient time has passed for subsequent supernovae-driven radio emission to accumulate. We show that backtracking the SFR(t) of galaxies along their SED-derived SFHs to a time several hundred megayears prior to their observed epoch will both linearise the SFR-L$_\mathrm{1.4GHz}$ relation and reduce the overall scatter. The minimum scatter in the SFR(t)-L$_\mathrm{1.4GHz}$ is reached at 200 - 300 Myr prior, consistent with theoretical predictions for the timescales required to disperse the cosmic ray electrons responsible for the synchrotron emission., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. Galaxy submillimetre number counts are a fundamental measurement in our understanding of galaxy evolution models. Most early measurements are obtained via single-dish telescopes with substantial source confusion, whereas recent interferometric observations are limited to small areas. We used a large database of ALMA continuum observations to accurately measure galaxy number counts in multiple (sub)millimetre bands, thus bridging the flux density range between single-dish surveys and deep interferometric studies. We continued the Automated Mining of the ALMA Archive in the COSMOS Field project (A$^3$COSMOS) and extended it with observations from the GOODS-South field (A$^3$GOODSS). The database consists of ~4,000 pipeline-processed continuum images from the public ALMA archive, yielding 2,050 unique detected sources. To infer galaxy number counts, we constructed a method to reduce the observational bias inherent to targeted pointings that dominate the database. This method comprises a combination of image selection, masking, and source weighting. The effective area was calculated by accounting for inhomogeneous wavelengths, sensitivities, and resolutions and for spatial overlap between images. We tested and calibrated our method with simulations. We derived the number counts in a consistent and homogeneous way in four different ALMA bands covering a relatively large area. The results are consistent with number counts from the literature within the uncertainties. In Band 7, at the depth of the inferred number counts, ~40% of the cosmic infrared background is resolved into discrete sources. This fraction, however, decreases with wavelength, reaching ~4% in Band 3. Finally, we used the number counts to test models of dusty galaxy evolution, and find a good agreement within the uncertainties., Comment: Published in A&A, 27 pages, 14 figures. We present the first spectroscopic ALMA follow-up for a pilot sample of nine Radio-Selected NIRdark galaxies in the COSMOS field. These sources were initially selected as radio-detected sources (S(3GHz)>12.65 uJy), lacking an optical/NIR counterpart in the COSMOS2015 catalog (Ks>24.7 mag), with just three of them subsequently detected in the deeper COSMOS2020. Several studies highlighted how this selection could provide a population of highly dust-obscured, massive, and star-bursting galaxies. With these new ALMA observations, we assess the spectroscopic redshifts of this pilot sample of sources and improve the quality of the physical properties estimated through SED-fitting. Moreover, we measure the quantity of molecular gas present inside these galaxies and forecast their potential evolutionary path, finding that the RS-NIRdark galaxies could represent a likely population of high-z progenitors of the massive and passive galaxies discovered at z~3. Finally, we present some initial constraints on the kinematics of the ISM within the analyzed galaxies, reporting a high fraction (~55%) of double-peaked lines that can be interpreted as the signature of a rotating structure in our targets or with the presence of major mergers in our sample. The study of distant galaxy groups and clusters at the peak epoch of star formation is limited by the lack of a statistically and homogeneously selected and spectroscopically confirmed sample. Recent discoveries of concentrated starburst activities in cluster cores have opened a new window to hunt for these structures based on their integrated IR luminosities. Hereby we carry out the large NOEMA (NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array) program targeting a statistical sample of infrared-luminous sources associated with overdensities of massive galaxies at z>2, the Noema formIng Cluster survEy (NICE). We present the first result from the ongoing NICE survey, a compact group at z=3.95 in the Lockman Hole field (LH-SBC3), confirmed via four massive (M_star>10^10.5M_sun) galaxies detected in CO(4-3) and [CI](1-0) lines. The four CO-detected members of LH-SBC3 are distributed over a 180 kpc physical scale, and the entire structure has an estimated halo mass of ~10^13Msun and total star formation rate (SFR) of ~4000Msun/yr. In addition, the most massive galaxy hosts a radio-loud AGN with L_1.4GHz, rest = 3.0*10^25W/Hz. The discovery of LH-SBC3 demonstrates the feasibility of our method to efficiently identify high-z compact groups or forming cluster cores. We present well-resolved near-IR and sub-mm analysis of the three highly star-forming massive ($>10^{11}\,\rm M_{\odot}$) galaxies within the core of the RO-1001 galaxy group at $\rm z=2.91$. Each of them displays kpc-scale compact star-bursting cores with properties consistent with forming galaxy bulges, embedded at the center of extended, massive stellar disks. Surprisingly, the stellar disks are unambiguously both quiescent, and severely lopsided. Therefore, `outside-in' quenching is ongoing in the three group galaxies. We propose an overall scenario in which the strong mass lopsidedness in the disks (ranging from factors of 1.6 to $>$3), likely generated under the effects of accreted gas and clumps, is responsible for their star-formation suppression, while funnelling gas into the nuclei and thus creating the central starbursts. The lopsided side of the disks marks the location of accretion streams impact, with additional matter components (dust and stars) detected in their close proximity directly tracing the inflow direction. The interaction with the accreted clumps, which can be regarded as minor-mergers, leads the major axes of the three galaxies to be closely aligned with the outer Lyman-$\alpha$-emitting feeding filaments. These results provide the first observational evidence of the impact of cold accretion streams on the formation and evolution of the galaxies they feed. In the current phase, this is taking the form of the rapid buildup of bulges under the effects of accretion, while still preserving massive quiescent and lopsided stellar disks at least until encountering a violent major-merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

A mild correlation exists in active galaxies between the mean black hole accretion, as traced by the mean X-ray luminosity $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>$, and the host galaxy stellar mass M$_*$, characterised by a normalisation steadily decreasing with cosmic time and lower in more quiescent galaxies. We create comprehensive semi-empirical mock catalogues of active black holes to pin down which parameters control the shape and evolution of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation of X-ray detected active galaxies. We find that the normalisation of the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation is largely independent of the fraction of active galaxies (the duty cycle), but strongly dependent on the mean Eddington ratio, when adopting a constant underlying M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relation as suggested by observational studies. The data point to a decreasing mean Eddington ratio with cosmic time and with galaxy stellar mass at fixed redshift. Our data can be reproduced by black holes and galaxies evolving on similar M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relations but progressively decreasing their average Eddington ratios, mean X-ray luminosities, and specific star formation rates, when moving from the starburst to the quiescent phase. Models consistent with the observed $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation and independent measurements of the mean Eddington ratios, are characterised by M$_{\rm BH}-{\rm M}_*$ relations lower than those derived from dynamically measured local black holes. Our results point to the $\left<{\rm L}_{\rm X}\right>-{\rm M}_*$ relation as a powerful diagnostic to: 1) probe black hole-galaxy scaling relations and the level of accretion onto black holes; 2) efficiently break the degeneracies between duty cycles and accretion rates in cosmological models of black holes., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS. 11 pages, 5 figures

We study stellar population and structural properties of massive $\log(M_{\star} / M_{\odot}) >11$ galaxies at $z\sim 2.7$ in the Magneticum and IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical simulations and GAEA semi-analytic model. We find stellar mass functions broadly consistent with observations, with no scarcity of massive, quiescent galaxies at $z\sim 2.7$, but with a higher quiescent galaxy fraction at high masses in IllustrisTNG. Average ages of simulated quiescent galaxies are between $\sim 0.8$ and 1.0 Gyr, older by a factor $\sim 2$ than observed in spectroscopically-confirmed quiescent galaxies at similar redshift. Besides being potentially indicative of limitations of simulations in reproducing observed star formation histories, this discrepancy may also reflect limitations in the estimation of observed ages. We investigate the purity of simulated UVJ rest-frame color-selected massive quiescent samples with photometric uncertainties typical of deep surveys (e.g., COSMOS). We find evidence for significant contamination (up to 60 percent) by dusty star-forming galaxies in the UVJ region that is typically populated by older quiescent sources. Furthermore, the completeness of UVJ-selected quiescent samples at this redshift may be reduced by 30 percent due to a high fraction of young quiescent galaxies not entering the UVJ quiescent region. Massive, quiescent galaxies in simulations have on average lower angular momenta and higher projected axis ratios and concentrations than star-forming counterparts. Average sizes of simulated quiescent galaxies are broadly consistent with observations within the uncertainties. The average size ratio of quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the probed mass range is formally consistent with observations, although this result is partly affected by poor statistics., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are typically identified through radio, mid-infrared, or X-ray emission or through the presence of broad and/or narrow emission lines. AGN can also leave an imprint on a galaxy's spectral energy distribution (SED) through the re-processing of photons by the dusty torus. Using the SED fitting code ProSpect with an incorporated AGN component, we fit the far ultraviolet to far-infrared SEDs of $\sim$494,00 galaxies in the D10-COSMOS field and $\sim$230,000 galaxies from the GAMA survey. By combining an AGN component with a flexible star formation and metallicity implementation, we obtain estimates for the AGN luminosities, stellar masses, star formation histories, and metallicity histories for each of our galaxies. We find that ProSpect can identify AGN components in 91 per cent of galaxies pre-selected as containing AGN through narrow-emission line ratios and the presence of broad lines. Our ProSpect-derived AGN luminosities show close agreement with luminosities derived for X-ray selected AGN using both the X-ray flux and previous SED fitting results. We show that incorporating the flexibility of an AGN component when fitting the SEDs of galaxies with no AGN has no significant impact on the derived galaxy properties. However, in order to obtain accurate estimates of the stellar properties of AGN host galaxies, it is crucial to include an AGN component in the SED fitting process. We analyse the far-infrared properties of $\sim$ 5,000 star-forming galaxies at $z<4.5$, drawn from the deepest, super-deblended catalogues in the GOODS-N and COSMOS fields. We develop a novel panchromatic SED fitting algorithm, $\texttt{Stardust}$, that models the emission from stars, AGN, and infrared dust emission, without relying on energy balance assumptions. Our code provides robust estimates of the UV-optical and FIR physical parameters, such as the stellar mass ($M_*$), dust mass ($M_{\rm dust}$), infrared luminosities ($L_{\rm IR}$) arising from AGN and star formation activity, and the average intensity of the interstellar radiation field ($\langle U \rangle$). Through a set of simulations we quantify the completeness of our data in terms of $M_{\rm dust}$, $L_{\rm IR}$ and $\langle U \rangle$, and subsequently characterise the distribution and evolution of these parameters with redshift. We focus on the dust-to-stellar mass ratio ($f_{\rm dust}$), which we parametrise as a function of cosmic age, stellar mass, and specific star formation rate. The $f_{\rm dust}$ is found to increase by a factor of 10 from $z=0$ to $z=2$ and appears to remain flat at higher$-z$, mirroring the evolution of the gas fraction. We also find a growing fraction of warm to cold dust with increasing distance from the main sequence, indicative of more intense interstellar radiation fields, higher star formation efficiencies and more compact star forming regions for starburst galaxies. Finally, we construct the dust mass functions (DMF) of star-forming galaxies up to $z=1$ by transforming the stellar mass function to DMF through the scaling relations derived here. In the framework of a systematic ALMA study of IR-selected main-sequence and starburst galaxies at z~1-1.7 at typical ~1" resolution, we report on the effects of mid-IR- and X-ray-detected active galactic nuclei (AGN) on the reservoirs and excitation of molecular gas in a sample of 55 objects. We find detectable nuclear activity in ~30% of the sample. The presence of dusty tori influences the IR SED of galaxies, as highlighted by the strong correlation among the AGN contribution to the total IR luminosity budget (fAGN = LIR,AGN/LIR), its hard X-ray emission, and the Rayleigh-Jeans to mid-IR (S1.2mm/S24um) observed color, with consequences on the empirical SFR estimates. Nevertheless, we find only marginal effects of AGN on the CO (J=2,4,5,7) or neutral carbon ([CI](1-0), [CI](2-1)) line luminosities and on the derived molecular gas excitation as gauged by line ratios and the full SLEDs. The [CI] and CO emission up to J=5,7 thus primarily traces the properties of the host in typical IR luminous galaxies. However, we highlight the existence of a large variety of line luminosities and ratios despite the homogeneous selection. In particular, we find a sparse group of AGN-dominated sources with the highest LIR,AGN/LIR,SFR ratios, >3, that are more luminous in CO(5-4) than what is predicted by the L'CO(5-4)-LIR,SFR relation, which might be the result of the nuclear activity. For the general population, our findings translate into AGN having minimal effects on quantities such as gas and dust fractions and SFEs. If anything, we find hints of a marginal tendency of AGN hosts to be compact at far-IR wavelengths and to display 1.8x larger dust optical depths. In general, this is consistent with a marginal impact of the nuclear activity on the gas reservoirs and star formation in average star-forming AGN hosts with LIR>5e11 Lsun, typically underrepresented in surveys of quasars and SMGs., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures + Appendix, accepted in A&A on August 28th, 2021. Deep ALMA and HST observations reveal the presence of a quenched massive galaxy within the $z=2.91$ galaxy group RO-1001. With a mass-weighted stellar age of $1.6 \pm 0.4 \,$Gyr this galaxy is one of the oldest known at $z\sim3$, implying that most of its $10^{11}\rm \, M_{\odot}$ of stars were rapidly formed at $z>6$--8. We present a comparative study of X-ray and IR AGNs at $z\approx2$ to highlight the important AGN selection effects on the distributions of host galaxy properties. Compared with non-AGN star-forming galaxies (SFGs) on the main sequence, X-ray AGNs have similar median star formation (SF) properties, but their incidence (q$_{\rm{AGN}}$) is higher among galaxies with either enhanced or suppressed SF, and among galaxies with larger stellar mass surface density, regardless if it is measured within half-light radius ($\Sigma_e$) or central 1kpc ($\Sigma_{\rm{1kpc}}$). Unlike X-ray AGNs, IR AGNs are less massive, and have enhanced SF and similar distributions of colors, $\Sigma_e$ and $\Sigma_{\rm{1kpc}}$ relative to non-AGN SFGs. Given that $\Sigma_e$ and $\Sigma_{\rm{1kpc}}$ strongly correlate with M$_*$, we introduce the fractional mass within central 1kpc ($\rm{\frac{M_{1kpc}}{M_*}}$), which only weakly depends on M$_*$, to quantify galaxy compactness. Both AGN populations have similar $\rm{\frac{M_{1kpc}}{M_*}}$ distributions compared to non-AGN SFGs'. While q$_{\rm{AGN}}$ increases with $\Sigma_e$ and $\Sigma_{\rm{1kpc}}$, it remains constant with $\rm{\frac{M_{1kpc}}{M_*}}$, indicating that the trend of increasing q$_{\rm{AGN}}$ with $\rm{\Sigma}$ is driven by M$_*$ more than morphology. While our findings are not in conflict with the scenario of AGN quenching, they do not imply it either, because the incidence of AGNs hosted in transitional galaxies depends crucially on AGN selections. We studied a sample of 274 radio and X-ray selected quasars (XQSOs) detected in the COSMOS and XXL-S radio surveys at 3 GHz and 2.1 GHz, respectively. This sample was identified by adopting a conservative threshold in X-ray luminosity, Lx [2-10\ keV] >= 10^44 erg/s, selecting only the most powerful quasars. Using available multiwavelength data, we examined various criteria for the selection of radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) XQSOs, finding that the number of RL/RQ XQSOs changes significantly depending on the chosen criterion. This discrepancy arises due to the different criteria tracing different physical processes and due to our sample being selected from flux-limited radio and X-ray surveys. Another approach to study the origin of radio emission in XQSOs is via their radio luminosity function (RLF). We constructed the XQSO 1.4 GHz radio luminosity functions (RLFs) in six redshift bins at 0.5 <= z <= 3.7. The lower-1.4 GHz luminosity end shows a higher normalization than expected only from AGN contribution in all studied redshift bins. The found "bump" is mostly dominated by emission due to star-forming (SF) processes within the XQSO host galaxies. As expected, AGN-related radio emission dominates at the higher-luminosity end of RLF. The evolution of XQSO RLF was studied via combination of analytic forms from the literature to constrain the lower-luminosity "bump" and the higher-luminosity AGN part of the RLF. We defined two 1.4 GHz luminosity thresholds, L_th,SF and L_th,AGN, below and above which more than 80% of sources contributing to the RLF are dominated by SF and AGN-related activity, respectively. These thresholds evolve with redshift, most likely due to the strong evolution of SFRs of the XQSO host galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We report the detection of multiple faint radio sources, that we identify as AGN-jets, within CLJ1449+0856 at z=2 using 3 GHz VLA observations. We study the effects of radio-jet based kinetic feedback at high redshifts, which has been found to be crucial in low redshift clusters to explain the observed thermodynamic properties of their ICM. We investigate this interaction at an epoch featuring high levels of AGN activity and a transitional phase of ICM in regards to the likelihood of residual cold-gas accretion. We measure a total flux of $\rm 30.6 \pm 3.3~\mu Jy$ from the 6 detected jets. Their power contribution is estimated to be $1.2 ~(\pm 0.6)~ \times 10^{44} ~\rm ergs~ s^{-1}$, although this value could be up to $4.7 ~ \times 10^{44} ~\rm ergs~ s^{-1}$. This is a factor $\sim 0.25 - 1.0$ of the previously estimated instantaneous energy injection into the ICM of CLJ1449+0856 from AGN outflows and star formation, that have already been found to be sufficient in globally offsetting the cooling flows in the cluster core. In line with the already detected abundance of star formation, this mode of feedback being distributed over multiple sites, contrary to a single central source observed at low redshifts, points to accretion of gas into the cluster centre. This also suggests a 'steady state' of the cluster featuring non cool-core like behaviour. Finally, we also examine the TIR-radio luminosity ratio for the known sample of galaxies within the cluster core and find that dense environments do not have any serious consequence on the compliance of galaxies to the IR-radio correlation.

Feedback-driven winds from star formation or active galactic nuclei might be a relevant channel for the abrupt quenching star formation in massive galaxies. However, both observations and simulations support the idea that these processes are non-conflictingly co-evolving and self-regulating. Furthermore, evidence of disruptive events that are capable of fast quenching is rare, and constraints on their statistical prevalence are lacking. Here we present a massive starburst galaxy at z=1.4 which is ejecting $46 \pm 13$\% of its molecular gas mass at a startling rate of $\gtrsim 10,000$ M$_{\odot}{\rm yr}^{-1}$. A broad component that is red-shifted from the galaxy emission is detected in four (low- and high-J) CO and [CI] transitions and in the ionized phase, which ensures a robust estimate of the expelled gas mass. The implied statistics suggest that similar events are potentially a major star-formation quenching channel. However, our observations provide compelling evidence that this is not a feedback-driven wind, but rather material from a merger that has been probably tidally ejected. The masses of supermassive black holes at the centres of local galaxies appear to be tightly correlated with the mass and velocity dispersions of their galactic hosts. However, the local Mbh-Mstar relation inferred from dynamically measured inactive black holes is up to an order-of-magnitude higher than some estimates from active black holes, and recent work suggests that this discrepancy arises from selection bias on the sample of dynamical black hole mass measurements. In this work we combine X-ray measurements of the mean black hole accretion luminosity as a function of stellar mass and redshift with empirical models of galaxy stellar mass growth, integrating over time to predict the evolving Mbh-Mstar relation. The implied relation is nearly independent of redshift, indicating that stellar and black hole masses grow, on average, at similar rates. Matching the de-biased local Mbh-Mstar relation requires a mean radiative efficiency ~0.15, in line with theoretical expectations for accretion onto spinning black holes. However, matching the "raw" observed relation for inactive black holes requires a mean radiative efficiency around 0.02, far below theoretical expectations. This result provides independent evidence for selection bias in dynamically estimated black hole masses, a conclusion that is robust to uncertainties in bolometric corrections, obscured active black hole fractions, and kinetic accretion efficiency. For our fiducial assumptions, they favour moderate-to-rapid spins of typical supermassive black holes, to achieve a mean radiative efficiency ~0.12-0.20. Our approach has similarities to the classic Soltan analysis, but by using galaxy-based data instead of integrated quantities we are able to focus on regimes where observational uncertainties are minimized., Comment: 12 pages, 8 Figures. While the formation of stellar clumps in distant galaxies is usually attributed to gravitational violent disk instabilities, we show here that major mergers also represent a competitive mechanism to form bright clumps. Using ~0.1'' resolution ACS F814W images in the entire COSMOS field, we measure the fraction of clumpy emission in 109 main sequence (MS) and 79 Herschel-detected starbursts (off-MS) galaxies at 0.5 < z < 0.9, representative of normal versus merger induced star-forming activity, respectively. We additionally identify merger samples from visual inspection and from Gini-M20 morphological parameters. Regardless of the merger criteria adopted, the clumpiness distribution of merging systems is different from that of normal isolated disks at > 99.5 % confidence level, with the former reaching higher clumpiness values, up to 20 % of the total galaxy emission. We confirm the merger induced clumpiness enhancement with novel hydrodynamical simulations of colliding galaxies with gas fractions typical of z ~ 0.7. Multi-wavelength images of three starbursts in the CANDELS field support the young nature of clumps, which are likely merger products rather than older pre-existing structures. Finally, for a subset of 19 starbursts with existing near-IR rest frame spectroscopy, we find that the clumpiness is mildly anti-correlated with the merger phase, decreasing towards final coalescence. Our result can explain recent ALMA detections of clumps in hyperluminous high-z starbursts, while normal objects are smooth. The evolution of the comoving kinetic luminosity densities ($\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$) of the radio loud (RL) high-excitation radio galaxies (RL HERGs) and the low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) in the XXL-S field is presented. The wide area and deep radio and optical data of XXL-S have allowed the construction of the radio luminosity functions (RLFs) of the RL HERGs and LERGs across a wide range in radio luminosity out to high redshift ($z = 1.3$). The LERG RLFs display weak evolution: $\Phi (z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{0.67 \pm 0.17}$ in the pure density evolution (PDE) case and $\Phi (z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{0.84 \pm 0.31}$ in the pure luminosity evolution (PLE) case. The RL HERG RLFs demonstrate stronger evolution than the LERGs: $\Phi (z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{1.81 \pm 0.15}$ for PDE and $\Phi (z)$ $\propto$ (1+$z$)$^{3.19 \pm 0.29}$ for PLE. Converting $L_{\rm{1.4 GHz}}$ into kinetic luminosities, the evolution of $\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$ was calculated for the RL HERGs and LERGs and compared to the predictions from simulations. The prediction for the evolution of radio mode feedback in the Semi-Analytic Galaxy Evolution model is consistent with the $\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$ evolution for all XXL-S RL AGN, indicating that RL AGN may be able to balance the radiative cooling of the hot phase of the IGM. Simulations that predict the $\Omega_{\rm{kin}}$ evolution of LERG equivalent populations show similar slopes to the XXL-S LERG evolution, indicating that LERGs are well described by models of SMBHs that slowly accrete hot gas. On the other hand, models of RL HERG equivalent populations differ in their predictions. While LERGs dominate the kinetic luminosity output of RL AGN at all redshifts, the evolution of the RL HERGs in XXL-S is weaker compared to what other studies have found. This implies that radio mode feedback from RL HERGs is more prominent at lower redshifts than was previously thought., Comment: 27 pages, 25 figures

Based on optical/near-IR Magellan FIRE spectra of 25 starburst galaxies at 0.5 < z < 0.9, Calabr\`o et al.(2018) showed that their attenuation properties can be explained by a single-parameter sequence of total obscurations ranging from A(V)=2 to A(V)=30 towards the starburst core centers in a mixed stars and dust configuration. We investigate here the origin of this sequence for the same sample. We show that total attenuations anti-correlate with the starburst sizes in radio (3 GHz) with a significance larger than 5sigma and a scatter of 0.26 dex. More obscured and compact starbursts also show enhanced N2 (=[NII]/Halpha) ratios and larger line velocity widths that we attribute to an increasing shock contribution toward later merger phases, driven by deeper gravitational potential wells at the coalescence. Additionally, the attenuation is also linked to the equivalent width (EW) of hydrogen recombination lines, which is sensitive to the luminosity weighted age of the relatively unobscured stellar populations. Overall, the correlations among A(V), radio size, line width, N2 and EW of Balmer/Paschen lines converge towards suggesting an evolutionary sequence of merger stages: all of these quantities are likely to be good time-tracers of the merger phenomenon, and their large spanned range appears to be characteristic of the different merger phases. Half of our sample at higher obscurations have radio sizes approximately 3 times smaller than early type galaxies at the same redshift, suggesting that, in analogy with local Ultraluminous Infrared galaxies (ULIRGs), these cores cannot be directly forming elliptical galaxies. Finally, we detect mid-IR AGN torus for half of our sample and additional X-ray emission for 6 starbursts; intriguingly, the latter have systematically more compact sizes, suggestive of emerging AGNs towards later merger stages, possibly precursors of a later QSO phase., Comment: 30 pages, 21 figures and 2 tables. We study a sample of 1,604 moderate-to-high radiative luminosity active galactic nuclei (HLAGN) selected at 3 GHz within the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. These were classified by combining multiple AGN diagnostics: X-ray data, mid-infrared data and broad-band spectral energy distribution fitting. We decompose the total radio 1.4 GHz luminosity ($\mathrm{L_{1.4\ GHz,TOT}}$) into the emission originating from star formation and AGN activity by measuring the excess in $\mathrm{L_{1.4\ GHz,TOT}}$ relative to the infrared-radio correlation of star-forming galaxies. To quantify the excess, for each source we calculate the AGN fraction ($\mathrm{f_{AGN}}$), the fractional contribution of AGN activity to $\mathrm{L_{1.4\ GHz,TOT}}$. The majority of the HLAGN, $(68.0\pm1.5)\%$, are dominated by star-forming processes ($f_{AGN}\leq0.5$), while $(32.0\pm1.5)\%$ are dominated by AGN-related radio emission ($0.50$)., Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures

We present a "super-deblended" far-infrared to (sub)millimeter photometric catalog in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS), prepared with the method recently developed by Liu et al. 2018, with key adaptations. We obtain point spread function (PSF) fitting photometry at fixed prior positions including 88,008 galaxies detected in either VLA 1.4~GHz, 3~GHz and/or MIPS 24~$\mu$m images. By adding a specifically carved mass-selected sample (with an evolving stellar mass limit), a highly complete prior sample of 194,428 galaxies is achieved for deblending FIR/(sub)mm images. We performed ``active' removal of non relevant priors at FIR/(sub)mm bands using spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting and redshift information. In order to cope with the shallower COSMOS data we subtract from the maps the flux of faint non-fitted priors and explicitly account for the uncertainty of this step. The resulting photometry (including data from Spitzer, Herschel, SCUBA2, AzTEC, MAMBO and NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array at 3~GHz and 1.4~GHz) displays well behaved quasi-Gaussian uncertainties, calibrated from Monte Carlo simulations and tailored to observables (crowding, residual maps). Comparison to ALMA photometry for hundreds of sources provide a remarkable validation of the technique. We detect 11,220 galaxies over the 100--1200~$\mu$m range, extending to $z_{\rm phot}\sim7$. We conservatively selected a sample of 85 $z>4$ high redshift candidates, significantly detected in the FIR/(sub)mm, often with secure radio and/or Spitzer/IRAC counterparts. This provides a chance to investigate the first generation of vigorous starburst galaxies (SFRs$\sim1000\mathrm{M}_\odot$~yr$^{-1}$). The classification of the host galaxies of the radio sources in the 25 deg$^2$ ultimate XMM extragalactic survey south field (XXL-S) is presented. XXL-S was surveyed at 2.1 GHz with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and is thus far the largest area radio survey conducted down to rms flux densities of $\sigma \sim 41$ $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$. Of the 6287 radio sources in XXL-S, 4758 (75.7%) were cross-matched to an optical counterpart using the likelihood ratio technique. There are 1110 spectroscopic redshifts and 3648 photometric redshifts available for the counterparts, of which 99.4% exist out to $z \sim 4$. A number of multiwavelength diagnostics, including X-ray luminosities, mid-infrared colours, spectral energy distribution fits, radio luminosities, and optical emission lines and colours, were used to classify the sources into three types: low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs), high-excitation radio galaxies (HERGs), and star-forming galaxies (SFGs). The final sample contains 1729 LERGs (36.3%), 1159 radio-loud HERGs (24.4%), 296 radio-quiet HERGs (6.2%), 558 SFGs (11.7%), and 1016 unclassified sources (21.4%). The LERGs tend to exist in the most massive galaxies with low star formation rates and redder colours, whereas the HERGs and SFGs exist in galaxies of lower mass, higher star formation rates, and bluer colours. The fraction of blue host galaxies is higher for radio-quiet HERGs than for radio-loud HERGs. LERGs and radio-loud HERGs are found at all radio luminosities, but radio-loud HERGs tend to be more radio luminous than LERGs at a given redshift. These results are consistent with the emerging picture in which LERGs exist in the most massive quiescent galaxies typically found in clusters with hot X-ray halos and HERGs are associated with ongoing star formation in their host galaxies via the accretion of cold gas., Comment: 27 pages, 31 figures

The infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) offers a way to assess star formation from radio emission. Multiple studies found the IRRC to decrease with increasing redshift. This may in part be due to the lack of knowledge about the possible radio spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of star-forming galaxies. We constrain the radio SED of a complete sample of highly star-forming galaxies ($SFR>100\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}/\,\mathrm{yr}$) based on the VLA-COSMOS $1.4\,\mathrm{GHz}$ Joint and $3\,\mathrm{GHz}$ Large Project catalogs. We reduce archival GMRT $325\,\mathrm{MHz}$ and $610\,\mathrm{MHz}$ observations, broadening the rest-frame frequency range to $0.3-15\,\mathrm{GHz}$. Employing survival analysis and fitting a double power law SED, we find that the slope steepens from a spectral index of $\alpha_1=0.51\pm 0.04$ below $4.5\,\mathrm{GHz}$ to $\alpha_2=0.98\pm0.07$ above $4.5\,\mathrm{GHz}.$ Our results suggest that the use of a K-correction assuming a single power-law radio SED for star forming galaxies is likely not the root cause of the IRRC trend., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, Proceedings of Science, IAU Symposium 333: "Peering towards Cosmic Dawn"

We study the moderate-to-high radiative luminosity active galactic nuclei (HLAGN) within the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. The survey covers 2.6 square degrees centered on the COSMOS field with a 1$\sigma$ sensitivity of 2.3 $\mathrm{\mu Jy}$/beam across the field. This provides the simultaneously largest and deepest radio continuum survey available to date with exquisite multi-wavelength coverage. The survey yields 10,830 radio sources with signal-to-noise ratios $\geq$5. A subsample of 1,604 HLAGN is analyzed here. These were selected via a combination of X-ray luminosity and mid-infrared colors. We derive luminosity functions for these AGN and constrain their cosmic evolution out to a redshift of $z\sim6$, for the first time decomposing the star formation and AGN contributions to the radio continuum emission in the AGN. Using infrared data from the Herschel Space Observatory and Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) 3 GHz observations in the COSMOS field, we investigate the redshift evolution of the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) for star-forming galaxies (SFGs) we classify as either spheroid- or disc-dominated based on their morphology. The sample predominantly consists of disc galaxies with stellar mass ${\gtrsim}10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$, and residing on the star-forming main sequence (MS). After the removal of AGN using standard approaches, we observe a significant difference between the redshift-evolution of the median IR/radio ratio $\overline{q}_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ of (i) a sample of ellipticals, plus discs with a substantial bulge component (`spheroid-dominated' SFGs) and, (ii) virtually pure discs and irregular systems (`disc-dominated' SFGs). The spheroid-dominated population follows a declining $\overline{q}_{\mathrm{TIR}}$ vs. $z$ trend similar to that measured in recent evolutionary studies of the IRRC. However, for disc-dominated galaxies, where radio and IR emission should be linked to star formation in the most straightforward way, we measure very little change in $\overline{q}_{\mathrm{TIR}}$. This suggests that low-redshift calibrations of radio emission as an SFR-tracer may remain valid out to at least $z\,{\simeq}\,1\,{-}\,1.5$ for pure star-forming systems. We find that the different redshift-evolution of $q_{\rm TIR}$ for the spheroid- and disc-dominated sample is mainly due to an increasing radio excess for spheroid-dominated galaxies at $z\,{\gtrsim}\,$0.8, hinting at some residual AGN activity in these systems. This finding demonstrates that in the absence of AGN the IRRC is independent of redshift, and that radio observations can therefore be used to estimate SFRs at all redshifts for genuinely star-forming galaxies., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after addressing reviewer feedback

Hard X-ray ($\geq 10$ keV) observations of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can shed light on some of the most obscured episodes of accretion onto supermassive black holes. The 70-month Swift/BAT all-sky survey, which probes the 14-195 keV energy range, has currently detected 838 AGN. We report here on the broad-band X-ray (0.3-150 keV) characteristics of these AGN, obtained by combining XMM-Newton, Swift/XRT, ASCA, Chandra, and Suzaku observations in the soft X-ray band ($\leq 10$ keV) with 70-month averaged Swift/BAT data. The non-blazar AGN of our sample are almost equally divided into unobscured ($N_{\rm H}< 10^{22}\rm cm^{-2}$) and obscured ($N_{\rm H}\geq 10^{22}\rm cm^{-2}$) AGN, and their Swift/BAT continuum is systematically steeper than the 0.3-10 keV emission, which suggests that the presence of a high-energy cutoff is almost ubiquitous. We discuss the main X-ray spectral parameters obtained, such as the photon index, the reflection parameter, the energy of the cutoff, neutral and ionized absorbers, and the soft excess for both obscured and unobscured AGN., Comment: ApJS in press. We carried out targeted ALMA observations of 129 fields in the COSMOS region at 1.25 mm, detecting 152 galaxies at S/N$\geq$5 with an average continuum RMS of 150 $\mu$Jy. These fields represent a S/N-limited sample of AzTEC / ASTE sources with 1.1 mm S/N$\geq$4 over an area of 0.72 square degrees. Given ALMA's fine resolution and the exceptional spectroscopic and multiwavelength photometric data available in COSMOS, this survey allows us unprecedented power in identifying submillimeter galaxy counterparts and determining their redshifts through spectroscopic or photometric means. In addition to 30 sources with prior spectroscopic redshifts, we identified redshifts for 113 galaxies through photometric methods and an additional nine sources with lower limits, which allowed a statistically robust determination of the redshift distribution. We have resolved 33 AzTEC sources into multi-component systems and our redshifts suggest that nine are likely to be physically associated. Our overall redshift distribution peaks at $z\sim$2.0 with a high redshift tail skewing the median redshift to $\tilde{z}$=2.48$\pm$0.05. We find that brighter millimeter sources are preferentially found at higher redshifts. Our faintest sources, with S$_{1.25 \rm mm}$<1.25 mJy, have a median redshift of $\tilde{z}$=2.18$\pm$0.09, while the brightest sources, S$_{1.25 \rm mm}$>1.8 mJy, have a median redshift of $\tilde{z}$=3.08$\pm$0.17. After accounting for spectral energy distribution shape and selection effects these results are consistent with several previous submillimeter galaxy surveys, and moreover, support the conclusion that the submillimeter galaxy redshift distribution is sensitive to survey depth., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics for review 17 pages in body + 26 in appendices

We determine the physical properties of a sample of SMGs in the COSMOS field that were pre-selected at the observed wavelength of $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.1$ mm, and followed up at $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.3$ mm with ALMA. We used MAGPHYS to fit the panchromatic (ultraviolet to radio) SEDs of 124 of the target SMGs, 19.4% of which are spectroscopically confirmed. The SED analysis was complemented by estimating the gas masses of the SMGs by using the $\lambda_{\rm obs}=1.3$ mm emission as a tracer of the molecular gas. The sample median and 16th-84th percentile ranges of the stellar masses, SFRs, dust temperatures, and dust and gas masses were derived to be $\log(M_{\star}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=11.09^{+0.41}_{-0.53}$, ${\rm SFR}=402^{+661}_{-233}$ ${\rm M}_{\odot}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$, $T_{\rm dust}=39.7^{+9.7}_{-7.4}$ K, $\log(M_{\rm dust}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=9.01^{+0.20}_{-0.31}$, and $\log(M_{\rm gas}/{\rm M}_{\odot})=11.34^{+0.20}_{-0.23}$, respectively. The median gas-to-dust ratio and gas fraction were found to be $120^{+73}_{-30}$ and $0.62^{+0.27}_{-0.23}$, respectively. We found that 57.3% of our SMGs populate the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies, while 41.9% of the sources lie above the MS by a factor of >3 (one source lies below the MS). The largest 3 GHz radio sizes are found among the MS sources. Those SMGs that appear irregular in the rest-frame UV are predominantly starbursts, while the MS SMGs are mostly disk-like. The larger radio-emitting sizes of the MS SMGs compared to starbursts is a likely indication of their more widespread, less intense star formation. The irregular UV morphologies of the starburst SMGs are likely to echo their merger nature. The star formation rate per unit area correlates well with the gas surface density for different types of galaxies. However, this Kennicutt-Schmidt law has not yet been examined for a large, homogeneously selected sample of SMGs, which could provide useful SF implementation information for models of massive galaxy formation and evolution. We aim at determining the K-S law parameters for the first time for a well-selected, statistical sample of SMGs. We used ALMA to conduct a 0.2" resolution, 870 $\mu$m imaging survey of 40 SMGs in COSMOS, which were initially selected at 1.1 mm. We analysed a sample of 32/40 target SMGs, for which our new ALMA 870 $\mu$m data provide information about the spatial extent of dust emission, and all of which have dust-obscured SFR and dust-based gas mass estimates available from our previous study. We divided our sample into equally large subsamples of main-sequence objects and starbursts, and found their K-S relations to be of the form $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \propto \Sigma_{\rm gas}^{0.81\pm0.01}$ and $\Sigma_{\rm SFR} \propto \Sigma_{\rm gas}^{0.84\pm0.39}$, respectively. The slightly sub-linear K-S slopes we derived suggest that the SF efficiency is nearly constant across the $\Sigma_{\rm gas}$ range probed. Under the assumption of a Galactic CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor for the whole sample, the MS SMGs obey a constant global SFE of about 21% per 100 Myr, while that of starburst SMGs is about 27%. The corresponding gas depletion times are $\sim480$ Myr and 370 Myr. On average, our SMGs have $\Sigma_{\rm gas}\gtrsim10^{3.9}$ M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$, which suggests that they are Eddington-limited. This is consistent with the theoretical expectation of a linear K-S relation for such systems. We determine the radio size distribution of a large sample of 152 SMGs in COSMOS that were detected with ALMA at 1.3 mm. For this purpose, we used the observations taken by the VLA-COSMOS 3 GHz Large Project. One hundred and fifteen of the 152 target SMGs were found to have a 3 GHz counterpart. The median value of the major axis FWHM at 3 GHz is derived to be $4.6\pm0.4$ kpc. The radio sizes show no evolutionary trend with redshift, or difference between different galaxy morphologies. We also derived the spectral indices between 1.4 and 3 GHz, and 3 GHz brightness temperatures for the sources, and the median values were found to be $\alpha=-0.67$ and $T_{\rm B}=12.6\pm2$ K. Three of the target SMGs, which are also detected with the VLBA, show clearly higher brightness temperatures than the typical values. Although the observed radio emission appears to be predominantly powered by star formation and supernova activity, our results provide a strong indication of the presence of an AGN in the VLBA and X-ray-detected SMG AzTEC/C61. The median radio-emitting size we have derived is 1.5-3 times larger than the typical FIR dust-emitting sizes of SMGs, but similar to that of the SMGs' molecular gas component traced through mid-$J$ line emission of CO. The physical conditions of SMGs probably render the diffusion of cosmic-ray electrons inefficient, and hence an unlikely process to lead to the observed extended radio sizes. Instead, our results point towards a scenario where SMGs are driven by galaxy interactions and mergers. Besides triggering vigorous starbursts, galaxy collisions can also pull out the magnetised fluids from the interacting disks, and give rise to a taffy-like synchrotron-emitting bridge. We characterise the physical nature of a 1.1 mm-selected, flux-limited, and interferometrically followed up sample of SMGs in COSMOS. We used the MAGPHYS code to fit the multiwavelength (UV-radio) SEDs of 16 of the target SMGs. We also constructed the pure radio SEDs of our SMGs using three different radio bands (325 MHz, 1.4 GHz, and 3 GHz). Moreover, since two SMGs in our sample, AzTEC1 and AzTEC3, benefit from previous CO line observations, we studied their properties in more detail. We found that 63% of our target SMGs lie above the galaxy main-sequence by more than a factor of 3, and hence are starbursts. The 3 GHz radio sizes we have previously measured for the target SMGs were compared with the present stellar mass estimates, and we found that the z>3 SMGs are fairly consistent with the mass-size relationship of z~2 compact, quiescent galaxies (cQGs). The median IR-radio correlation parameter is found to be q=2.27, which is lower than measured locally (median q=2.64). AzTEC1 is found to have a sub-Eddington SFR surface density (by a factor of 2.6), while AzTEC3 appears to be an Eddington-limited starburster. The gas reservoir in these two high-z SMGs would be exhausted in only ~86 and 19 Myr at the current SFR, respectively. A comparison of the MAGPHYS-based properties of our SMGs with those of equally bright ALESS SMGs suggests that the two populations share fairly similar physical characteristics, including the q parameter. A hint of negative correlation is found between the 3 GHz size and the level of starburstiness, and hence cosmic-ray electrons in more compact starbursts might be more susceptible to free-free absorption. Some of the derived low and high q values (compared to the local median) could be the result of a specific merger/post-starburst phase of galaxy evolution.
