9. Organic bio-based aerogel from food waste : preparation and hydrophobization

Abstract

In this work, organic aerogels from spent ground coffee and apple pomace were prepared and characterized for the first time. Apple aerogel was found to be much lighter than that from coffee (0.19 vs. 0.016 g/cm3, whereas the specific surface areas are comparable (229 vs. 208 m2/g). Being intrinsically hydrophilic, these aerogels were silanized, both in liquid and gas phase, to increase stability in aqueous media. The latter modification method allowed chemical grafting of the silane to the aerogel surface (evidenced by FTIR and TGA) and resulted in certain hydrophobicity, as was evidenced via contact angle measurements: both aerogels possess a contact angle of ca. 100° after the gas hydrophobization, while for the pristine aerogels it was 50°. Abstract

The aim of this study is to experimentally investigate the cavitation erosion on the blade root of a model scale controllable pitch propeller. Tests are carried out in a cavitation tunnel, using the soft paint technique to study cavitation erosion, exploiting also two standard cameras and one high speed camera to study the damage patterns and cavitation dynamics, respectively. Standard cameras are placed on the top of test section in order to periodically monitor the occurrence of damages on the layer of paint. The high-speed camera has been used instead to analyse bubble dynamics and identify potentially erosive phenomena. Three different cavitation bubble structures on the blade root have been identified in the present study: streak cavitation, spherical bubble cavitation, and twisting bubble cavitation. The paint tests results have been analysed together with high-speed videos, showing a remarkable agreement between the occurrence of damage and cavitation collapse phenomena. The results demonstrated two regions on the propeller blade root with high risk of erosion: (1) suction side blade root showed significant damage pattern due to single bubble as well as bubble assembly collapse, and (2) pressure side blade root showed slight damage pattern due to spherical bubble collapse.

Abstract

Targets of the surface treatments of marine hulls have always been to preserve the structural capacity of the hull envelope and to maintain a smooth and clean external surface, thus minimizing the frictional component of motion resistance. These objectives are pursued since a couple of millennia by fighting the chemical and biological phenomena inducing various forms of degradation in the hull base material and/or in the external surface smoothness. As regards the latter aspect, in particular, a most negative effect is represented by the adhesion of biofouling, jeopardizing the resistance performance of the hull. In the past, solutions to this specific problem were found in biocide-releasing paintings, practice that is nowadays unacceptable because of its high environmental impact. New challenges in the field are represented by the possibility of not only maintaining, but also decreasing, the frictional coefficient intrinsic of the hull surface, while preserving excellent properties against fouling adhesion and minimizing environmental impact. The paper, based on publicly available data, analyses recent trends in the commercially available hull coatings and depicts possible development lines for new types of treatments aimed at reducing frictional resistance.
