This study examined associations among maternal book-sharing styles and goals for book-sharing activities and children’s verbal contributions in three communities. Participants were 106 mother-toddler dyads from New York City (NYC, USA), Munster (Germany), and Chennai (India). Mothers were videotaped sharing a book with their two-year-olds and interviewed about their book-sharing goals. Cluster analyses identified two book-sharing styles: 53% adopted a follower style (focused on maintaining the flow of the conversation, while requesting and providing some information), and 47% of mothers adopted a storyteller-follower style (focused on providing information about the text and maintaining the flow of the conversation). NYC mothers were more likely to adopt a follower style compared to Munster and Chennai mothers. While NYC mothers embraced the goal of enjoyment and bonding more, Chennai mothers embraced the goal of learning from books more, and Munster mothers embraced the goal of soothing the child more. Maternal book-sharing styles and goals were associated. Embracing the goal of enjoyment and bonding was related to adopting a follower style, above community and demographic variables. Maternal book-sharing styles were not related to children’s verbal contributions. Findings highlight variation within and across communities in how mothers approach booksharing with their toddlers.

Among the many impacts of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, one of the most dramatic was the immediate closure of in-person schooling in March/April 2020 when parents were faced with much greater responsibility in supporting their children's learning. Despite this, few studies have examined parents' own perspectives of this experience. The aims of this preliminary study were to (a) identify challenges, benefits, and useful strategies related to remote learning and (b) examine differences in findings across two countries, between parents of youth with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and between parents of children and adolescents. To address these aims, parent responses to open-ended questions on the Home Adjustment to COVID-19 Scale (HACS; Becker, Breaux, et al., 2020) were examined across three studies conducted in the United States and Australia (N = 606, children: 68.5% male, ages 6-17 years). The challenges most frequently expressed by parents included the child's difficulty staying on task (23.8% of parents), lack of motivation (18.3%), remote learning factors (17.8%), and lack of social interaction (14.4%). The most frequently expressed strategy related to using routines and schedules (58.2%) and the biggest benefit was more family time (20.3%). Findings were largely consistent across countries, ADHD status, and age, with a few notable group differences. Given that the most common challenges involved child- (e.g., difficulties with staying on task and motivation), parent- (e.g., balancing remote learning with work responsibilities), and school- (e.g., remote instruction difficulties) related factors, there is a need for improved support across these systems going forward. The majority of the emotion socialization behaviors (ESB) literature has focused on community samples and socialization of negative emotions. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that ESB are also critical in setting the foundations for the healthy development of positive emotions, with implications for developmental psychopathology. We conducted a systematic review of research examining parent ESB and youth positive emotions in clinical child and adolescent samples. A literature search was conducted in March 2021, resulting in 563 abstracts being reviewed. Two reviewers independently screened the titles and abstracts to identify relevant papers, with 53 articles being reviewed in full. Seven articles (four cross-sectional and correlational, three intervention) were included in the current review, of which one was with an internalizing sample, three were with an externalizing sample, and three were with a neurodevelopmental disorder sample. Results varied regarding the role of parent ESB in youth positive emotions across clinical populations. In correlational studies, minimal evidence was found for the association between parent ESB and youth positive emotions, but across the three intervention studies, there was evidence that both parent ESB and children's positive emotions can be improved through intervention. We present a preliminary model of relations between youth psychopathology, parent ESB, and child positive emotions, with consideration of potential moderators of links between ESB and positive emotions. Finally, we discuss limitations of the existing body of research, and offer specific recommendations for future research directions.

Empirical knowledge on what specific aspects of mental health are associated with spirituality is limited, and explanations for the mechanisms underlying this association is scarce. Furthermore, there is limited research on this association among individuals from non-Christian religious backgrounds and non-Western countries. The current study examined relations between spirituality and aspects of mental health in 1,544 adolescents from diverse religious backgrounds in two Eastern countries, India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Additionally, we examined mediating and moderating factors. Adolescents (58% female) ages 11–15 years completed a questionnaire on aspects of their mental health, spirituality, and self-control abilities. Results showed that spirituality had a significant positive association with life satisfaction and a significant negative association with internalizing problems, but a non-significant relation with externalizing problems, controlling for age, gender, and socioeconomic status. Self-control completely mediated the association between spirituality and life satisfaction, and this mediational relation was only present for adolescents from the UAE. Results support prior research suggesting positive associations between spirituality and adaptive mental health outcomes and extend these findings to adolescents from diverse religious backgrounds in non-Western countries. These findings have important clinical and policy implications for supporting the role of spirituality in an adolescent’s life.

This meta-analysis examined the efficacy of available pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for irritability among youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), disruptive behavior disorders (DBD), disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), and/or severe mood dysregulation (SMD).Literature searches were conducted in October 2020, resulting in 564 abstracts being reviewed to identify relevant papers, with 387 articles being reviewed in full. A random effects model was used for the meta-analysis, with subgroup meta-regressions run to assess effects of study design, intervention type, medication class, and clinical population.A total of 101 studies were included (80 pharmacological, 13 non-pharmacological, 8 combined). Despite high heterogeneity in effects (IThis meta-analysis provides a comprehensive review of interventions targeting persistent non-episodic irritability among youth with various psychiatric disorders. Strong evidence was found for medium-to-large effects across study design, intervention type, and clinical populations, with the largest effects for pharmacological interventions, particularly antipsychotic medications and combined pharmacological interventions, and interventions for youth with ASD.

Nosocomial infections occur worldwide and also in the Kurdistan region. Frequently patients colonized with multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates are encountered in many hospitals. As information is lacking with respect to the mechanisms of resistance responsible for the multiresistant character of the P. aeruginosa isolates and their genetic relationship, isolates were prospectively collected and characterized with respect to their mechanism of resistance. During 2012 and 2013, 81 P. aeruginosa isolates were collected from three teaching hospitals in the city of Erbil, Iraq. Susceptibility testing was performed using the VITEK-2 system. Isolates were screened for the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and for the presence of metallo β-lactamases (MBLs). The presence of serine carbapenemases was detected by PCR. The genetic relationship of the isolates was demonstrated by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Background The impact of chronic stressors like the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to be magnified in adolescents with pre-existing mental health risk, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This study examined changes in and predictors of adolescent mental health from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States. Methods Participants include 238 adolescents (132 males; ages 15-17; 118 with ADHD). Parents and adolescents provided ratings of mental health symptoms shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and in spring and summer 2020. Results Adolescents on average experienced an increase in depression, anxiety, sluggish cognitive tempo, inattentive, and oppositional/defiant symptoms from pre-COVID-19 to spring 2020; however, with the exception of inattention, these symptoms decreased from spring to summer 2020. Adolescents with ADHD were more likely than adolescents without ADHD to experience an increase in inattentive, hyperactive/impulsive, and oppositional/defiant symptoms. Adolescents with poorer pre-COVID-19 emotion regulation abilities were at-risk for experiencing increases in all mental health symptoms relative to adolescents with better pre-COVID-19 emotion regulation abilities. Interactive risk based on ADHD status and pre-COVID-19 emotion regulation abilities was found for inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity, such that adolescents with ADHD and poor pre-COVID-19 emotion regulation displayed the highest symptomatology across timepoints. Lower family income related to increases in inattention but higher family income related to increases in oppositional/defiant symptoms. Conclusions The early observed increases in adolescent mental health symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic do not on average appear to be sustained following the lift of stay-at-home orders, though studies evaluating mental health across longer periods of time are needed. Emotion dysregulation and ADHD increase risk for sustained negative mental health functioning and highlight the need for interventions for these populations during chronic stressors. Results and clinical implications should be considered within the context of our predominately White, middle class sample.

Research question: What is the impact of clinical pregnancy on the composition of the urinary microbiota? Design: Eighty-five women receiving IVF, without or with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment were enrolled in a prospective observational study performed in 2008. Approximately 14 weeks before the start of hormonal treatment and embryo transfer, a midstream urine sample was obtained, followed by an additional sample 16 weeks after embryo transfer. The microbial composition was determined by polymerase chain reaction of the V1–V3 regions of the 16S rRNA bacterial gene. Clinical pregnancy data were collected after the first IVF/IVF–ICSI cycle and 1 year later. Results: A significant decrease in the abundance of Lactobacillus species as well as a significant increase in that of Staphylococcus species was observed in women who became pregnant after IVF/IVF–ICSI treatment (both P < 0.0001). In addition, based on the composition of the pretreatment microbiome it was possible to identify women with a lower likelihood of achieving clinical pregnancy after IVF/IVF–ICSI treatment. The resulting prediction model was validated in another 27 women who did not become pregnant during the first cycle and received additional IVF/IVF–ICSI cycle(s) or frozen embryo transfer(s). The model predicted the women with no clinical pregnancy after IVF/IVF–ICSI treatment with a sensitivity of 0.42 and a specificity of 1.00. Conclusions: The data primarily showed that clinical pregnancy results in significant changes in the abundance and diversity of the urinary microbiota. Coincidentally, it was discovered that the urinary microbiome composition before IVF/IVF–ICSI treatment can potentially be used as a predictor of clinical pregnancy.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important causes of infection in intensive care units (ICUs). It is intrinsically resistant to many antimicrobials and easily acquires additional resistance genes via horizontal gene transfer of mobile genetic elements. In this study, 1528 P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from a Dutch national surveillance programme between the years 1998-2011 were analysed for the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes (blaCTX-M, blaSHV, blaTEM, blaBEL, blaPER, blaVEB and blaOXA-10) and metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) genes (blaIMP, blaVIM and blaNDM). Of the ceftazidime-resistant isolates, 6.2% tested phenotypically positive for ESBL. Moreover, a Verona integron-encoded MBL (VIM) gene was found in 3.1% of isolates that were phenotypically resistant to imipenem and/or meropenem. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of ESBL-positive isolates indicated ST1216, ST111 and ST622, with all blaVIM-positive isolates belonging to the ST111 clone. Although the prevalence of ESBL and MBL phenotypes in this Dutch national surveillance collection of >1500 ICU P. aeruginosa isolates was very low, all VIM-producing isolates belonged to the high risk-associated, international, clonal complex CC111, and most ESBL-producing isolates belonged to clonal complexes known for their successful spread, e.g. CC111 and CC235. These data indicate that high-risk clones of P. aeruginosa were present in the Netherlands between 1998-2011 and probably spread unnoticed throughout Dutch hospitals.
