1. Rhenium Isotopes Record Oxidative Weathering Intensity in Sedimentary Rocks.

Abstract

Oxidative weathering of organic carbon in sedimentary rocks is a major source of CO2 to the atmosphere over geological timescales, but the size of this emission pathway in Earth's past has not been directly quantified due to a lack of available proxy approaches. We have measured the rhenium isotope composition of organic‐rich rocks sampled from unweathered drill cores and weathered outcrops in south Texas, whose stratigraphic successions can be tightly correlated. Oxidative weathering of more than 90% of the organic carbon and ∼85% of the rhenium is accompanied by a shift to lower rhenium isotope compositions in the weathered outcrops. The calculated isotope composition of rhenium weathered from the initial bedrock for individual samples varies systematically by ∼0.7‰ with different fractions of rhenium loss. This variation can be empirically modeled with isotope fractionation factors of α = 1.0002–1.0008. Our results indicate that the isotope composition of rhenium delivered to the oceans can be altered by weathering intensity of rock organic matter and that the rhenium isotope composition of seawater is sensitive to past oxidative weathering and associated CO2 emissions. Plain Language Summary: Carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere when sedimentary rocks containing ancient organic carbon are exposed to oxygen. This process, referred to as oxidative weathering, is an important part of the global carbon cycle that may play a vital role in climate change over geological timescales. In this study, we have investigated whether it is possible to use the isotope composition of rhenium metal as a proxy for this oxidation process since rhenium is liberated from rocks alongside organic carbon. Our findings show that the rhenium removed from rocks during weathering has an isotopic fingerprint that is linked to the degree of weathering—and thus presumably to the extent of carbon oxidation. There are several important features of rhenium isotope behavior that are still underconstrained, not least where Re resides in organic rich rocks, but our findings nonetheless advance an emerging approach to reconstructing the ancient carbon cycle. Abstract

Seawater lithium isotopes (δ7Li) record changes over Earth history, including a ∼9‰ increase during the Cenozoic interpreted as reflecting either a change in continental silicate weathering rate or weathering feedback strength, associated with tectonic uplift. However, mechanisms controlling the dissolved δ7Li remain debated. Here we report time-series δ7Li measurements from Tibetan and Pamir rivers, and combine them with published seasonal data, covering small (2 km2) to large rivers (>106 km2). We find seasonal changes in δ7Li across all latitudes: dry seasons consistently have higher δ7Li than wet seasons, by −0.3‰ to 16.4‰ (mean 5.0 ± 2.5‰). A globally negative correlation between δ7Li and annual runoff reflects the hydrological intensity operating in catchments, regulating water residence time and δ7Li values. This hydrological control on δ7Li is consistent across climate events back to ~445 Ma. We propose that hydrological changes result in shifts in river δ7Li and urge reconsideration of its use to examine past weathering intensity and flux, opening a new window to reconstruct hydrological conditions.

9. Concentration-Discharge Relationships of Dissolved Rhenium in Alpine Catchments Reveal Its Use as a Tracer of Oxidative Weathering

Abstract

Oxidative weathering of sedimentary rocks plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. Rhenium (Re) has been proposed as a tracer of rock organic carbon (OCpetro) oxidation. However, the sources of Re and its mobilization by hydrological processes remain poorly constrained. Here, we examine dissolved Re as a function of water discharge, using samples collected from three alpine catchments that drain sedimentary rocks in Switzerland (Erlenbach and Vogelbach) and Colorado, USA (East River). The Swiss catchments reveal a higher dissolved Re flux in the catchment with higher erosion rates, but have similar [Re]/[Na+] and [Re]/[SO42−] ratios, which indicate a dominance of Re from OCpetro. Despite differences in rock type and hydro-climatic setting, the three catchments have a positive correlation between river water [Re]/[Na+] and [Re]/[SO42−] and water discharge. We propose that this reflects preferential routing of Re from a near-surface, oxidative weathering zone. The observations support the use of Re as a proxy to trace rock-organic carbon oxidation, and suggest it may be a hydrological tracer of vadose zone processes. We apply the Re proxy and estimate CO2 release by OCpetro oxidation of 5.7 +6.6/−2.0 tC km−2 yr−1 for the Erlenbach. The overall weathering intensity was ∼40%, meaning that the corresponding export of unweathered OCpetro in river sediments is large, and the findings call for more measurements of OCpetro oxidation in mountains and rivers as they cross floodplains.

Abstract

International audience; Draix-Bleone observatory is located in the French South Alps in a highly erodible badland area. It was created in 1983 to study hydrology and erosion processes in mountain and its focus has been extended since then to critical zone processes, including interactions between physical, chemical and biological components. In this poster we present recent results and innovative methods ranging from detailed measurements and modeling of sediment transport and soil moisture, chemical and physical denudation rates, chemical tracing of water fluxes, to the interactions between plant traits anddiversity, soil formation and stability, and interactions between vegetation cover and erosion.

Abstract

Ectopic lymphatics form in bone and promote bone destruction in diseases such as Gorham-Stout disease, generalized lymphatic anomaly, and kaposiform lymphangiomatosis. However, the role lymphatics serve in normal bone development and repair is poorly understood. The objective of this study was to characterize bone development and fracture healing in mice that have a defect in the development of the lymphatic vasculature. We found that bones in wild-type adult mice and mouse embryos did not have lymphatics. We also found that bone development was normal in Vegfr3Chy/Chy embryos. These mice do not have lymphatics and die shortly after birth. To determine whether lymphatics serve a role in postnatal bone development and fracture healing, we analyzed bones from Vegfr3wt/Chy mice. These mice are viable and have fewer lymphatics than wild-type mice. We found that postnatal bone development and fracture healing was normal in Vegfr3wt/Chy mice. Taken together, our results suggest that lymphatics do not play a major role in normal bone development or repair. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Soils of the northern high latitudes store carbon over millennial timescales (thousands of years) and contain approximately double the carbon stock of the atmosphere1, 2, 3. Warming and associated permafrost thaw can expose soil organic carbon and result in mineralization and carbon dioxide (CO2) release4, 5, 6. However, some of this soil organic carbon may be eroded and transferred to rivers7, 8, 9. If it escapes degradation during river transport and is buried in marine sediments, then it can contribute to a longer-term (more than ten thousand years), geological CO2 sink8, 9, 10. Despite this recognition, the erosional flux and fate of particulate organic carbon (POC) in large rivers at high latitudes remains poorly constrained. Here, we quantify the source of POC in the Mackenzie River, the main sediment supplier to the Arctic Ocean11, 12, and assess its flux and fate. We combine measurements of radiocarbon, stable carbon isotopes and element ratios to correct for rock-derived POC10, 13, 14. Our samples reveal that the eroded biospheric POC has resided in the basin for millennia, with a mean radiocarbon age of 5,800 ± 800 years, much older than the POC in large tropical rivers13, 14. From the measured biospheric POC content and variability in annual sediment yield15, we calculate a biospheric POC flux of teragrams of carbon per year from the Mackenzie River, which is three times the CO2 drawdown by silicate weathering in this basin16. Offshore, we find evidence for efficient terrestrial organic carbon burial over the Holocene period, suggesting that erosion of organic carbon-rich, high-latitude soils may result in an important geological CO2 sink.

Abstract

International audience; We explore the geochemistry and the isotopic composition of lithium (δ 7 Li) of rivers draining volcanic islands (Guadeloupe, Iceland, Java, Martinique and Sao Miguel) with a specific focus on continental hydrothermal activity. Our preliminary results reveal a global-scale trend between δ 7 Li and the elemental ratio Li/Na in rivers draining volcanic islands. We suggest that this trend results from a mixture between waters with low δ 7 Li and high Li/Na, inherited from high-temperature water rock interactions, and waters with low Li/Na and high δ 7 Li, in which Li is controlled by the neoformation of clays during low-temperature chemical weathering in basaltic soils. This latter process can be described by a simple isotope fractionation model, consistent with reported values for isotopic fractionation factors between secondary weathering products and water. These data highlight the important potential role of continental high-temperature weathering processes on the oceanic budget of lithium.

Abstract

Generalized lymphatic anomaly (GLA) and Gorham-Stout disease (GSD) are related diseases involving the lymphatic vasculature. Patients with these diseases frequently develop chylothorax, which can cause respiratory distress, failure, and death. Unfortunately, the optimum treatment for GLA and GSD patients with chylothorax remains unknown. Here we review 64 previously reported cases of chylothorax in GLA and GSD and describe a GLA patient with bilateral chylothorax that was treated with a pleurovenous shunt after multiple other treatments failed. Unfortunately, this shunt was not able to control the patient's effusion, and she succumbed to her disease 3 years after the shunt was placed. Interestingly, our literature review revealed that patients with left-sided effusions had better outcomes than patients with either right-sided or bilateral effusions. Taken together, our report highlights the difficulty in managing chylothorax in patients with GLA or GSD and reveals that a better understanding of the cause of chylothorax is needed so that new therapies can be developed to treat this common complication of GLA and GSD. The exposure of organic carbon in rocks to oxidative weathering can release carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere and consume atmospheric oxygen. Alongside volcanism, metamorphism, and the weathering of carbonate minerals by sulfuric acid, this is a major source of atmospheric CO2 over million year timescales. The balance between CO2 release and CO2 drawdown by silicate weathering and organic carbon burial sets the net geochemical carbon budget during weathering and erosion. However, the rates of rock-derived organic carbon (petrogenic organic carbon, OCpetro) oxidation remain poorly constrained. Here, we use rhenium as a proxy to trace and quantify CO2 release by OCpetro oxidation in the Mackenzie River Basin, Canada, where the other carbon fluxes have been well constrained previously. River water and sediment samples were collected between 2009 and 2013 at gauging stations along the Mackenzie River and its main tributaries (Liard, Peel and Arctic Red). To assess rhenium inputs from silicate, sulfide and OCpetro mineral phases we normalize dissolved rhenium concentrations, [Re]diss, to sodium and sulfate ion concentrations. This approach suggests that >85 percent of Re]diss is derived from OC tro in the main river channels. [Re]diss and water discharge measurements are used to quantify dissolved Re yields. River sediments provide a measure of the Re to OC tro ratio of materials undergoing weathering in the basin, and agree well with published rock samples. Dissolved Re yields are combined with river sediment [Re]/[OCpetro] ratios to estimate the CO2 emissions by OCpetro weathering. These are 0.45+019/-0.11 metric tonnes of carbon, tC km2 yr-1 for the Mackenzie River at Tsiigehtchic (3.8+1.5/0.9 × 104 moles km-2 yr-1), and 0.94+0.41/-0.26 tC km-2yr-1, 0.78+0.35/-0.21tC km-2 yr-1 and 1.01+0.42./-0.25tC km-2 yr-1 for the Peel, Arctic Red and Liard catchments, respectively. When considered alongside published silicate and carbonate weathering rates and the sedimentary burial of biospheric organic carbon, these data suggest that the upper part of the Mackenzie River Basin presently acts as an atmospheric CO2 sink of ∼1 tC km-2 yr-1 (∼8 × 104 moles km-2 yr-1) as a result of the carbon transfers by weathering and erosion. During the Last Glacial Maximum, it is possible that the net geochemical carbon balance may have been very different: potential increases in CO2 emissions from oxidative weathering of OCpetro and carbonate minerals, coupled with reduced biospheric carbon burial, may have tipped the balance to a net source of CO2

However, this goal is complicated by large gaps and inconsistencies that still exist in the foundation of basic information about biodiversity of ciliates. The present paper reviews issues relating to the taxonomy of ciliates and presents specific recommendations for best practice in the observation and documentation of their biodiversity. This effort stems from a workshop that explored ways to implement six Grand Challenges proposed by the International Research Coordination Network for Biodiversity of Ciliates (IRCN-BC). As part of its commitment to strengthening the knowledge base that supports research on biodiversity of ciliates, the IRCN-BC proposes to populate The Ciliate Guide, an online database, with biodiversity-related data and metadata to create a resource that will facilitate accurate taxonomic identifications and promote sharing of data.

Abstract

Chromidina spp. are enigmatic apostome ciliates (Oligohymenophorea, Opalinopsidae) that parasitise the renal and pancreatic appendages of cephalopods. Only four species have been described, among which only three have been formally named. No DNA sequence has been reported so far. To investigate Chromidina spp. diversity, we sampled cephalopods in the Mediterranean Sea off Tunis, Tunisia, and identified two distinct Chromidina spp. in two different host species: Loligo vulgaris and Sepia officinalis. From haematoxylin-stained slides, we described morphological traits for these parasitic species and compared them to previous descriptions. We also re-described the morphology of Chromidina elegans (Foettinger, 1881) from Chatton and Lwoff’s original materials and designated a neohapantotype and paraneohapantotypes for this species. We describe a new species, Chromidina chattoni Souidenne, Florent and Grellier n. sp., found in L. vulgaris off Tunisia, and evidence for a probable novel species, found in S. officinalis off Tunisia, although this latter species presents similarities to some morphological stages previously described for Chromidina cortezi Hochberg, 1971. We amplified, for the first time, an 18S rDNA marker for these two Chromidina species. Phylogenetic analysis supports the association of Chromidina within apostome ciliates. Genetic distance analysis between 18S rDNA sequences of representative apostomes indicates Pseudocollinia as the most closely related genus to Chromidina.

49. Anti-Plasmodium activity of ceramide analogs

Abstract

Abstract Background Sphingolipids are key molecules regulating many essential functions in eukaryotic cells and ceramide plays a central role in sphingolipid metabolism. A sphingolipid metabolism occurs in the intraerythrocytic stages of Plasmodium falciparum and is associated with essential biological processes. It constitutes an attractive and potential target for the development of new antimalarial drugs. Methods The anti-Plasmodium activity of a series of ceramide analogs containing different linkages (amide, methylene or thiourea linkages) between the fatty acid part of ceramide and the sphingoid core was investigated in culture and compared to the sphingolipid analog PPMP (d,1-threo-1-phenyl-2-palmitoylamino-3-morpholino-1-propanol). This analog is known to inhibit the parasite sphingomyelin synthase activity and block parasite development by preventing the formation of the tubovesicular network that extends from the parasitophorous vacuole to the red cell membrane and delivers essential extracellular nutrients to the parasite. Results Analogs containing methylene linkage showed a considerably higher anti-Plasmodium activity (IC50 in the low nanomolar range) than PPMP and their counterparts with a natural amide linkage (IC50 in the micromolar range). The methylene analogs blocked irreversibly P. falciparum development leading to parasite eradication in contrast to PPMP whose effect is cytostatic. A high sensitivity of action towards the parasite was observed when compared to their effect on the human MRC-5 cell growth. The toxicity towards parasites did not correlate with the inhibition by methylene analogs of the parasite sphingomyelin synthase activity and the tubovesicular network formation, indicating that this enzyme is not their primary target. Conclusions It has been shown that ceramide analogs were potent inhibitors of P. falciparum growth in culture. Interestingly, the nature of the linkage between the fatty acid part and the sphingoid core considerably influences the antiplasmodial activity and the selectivity of analogs when compared to their cytotoxicity on mammalian cells. By comparison with their inhibitory effect on cancer cell growth, the ceramide analogs might inhibit P. falciparum growth through modulation of the endogenous ceramide level.
