Abstract

FERMI is implementing a development plan to keep the facility in a world-leading position on the base of the requests coming from the user community and the advises from the Scientific Advisory Council and the Machine Advisory Committee. The ultimate goal of this plan consists in doubling the maximum photon energy available and in reducing the pulse duration below the characteristic lifetime of the atomic core levels in the source spectral range. An upgrade of FERMI aimed at reaching the oxygen K-edge requires a profound modification of the FEL configurations and of the main components of the machine, including the linac and the undulator lines. One of the most promising approaches for this upgrade is to implement the echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) scheme, relying on two external lasers to precisely control the spectrotemporal properties of the FEL pulse. The conversion to EEHG of the first stage of the double-stage harmonic cascade presently in use on FEL-2, would allow to reach harmonics as high as 120, enabling to generate coherent pulses down to 2 nm. The main aspects of the upgrade strategy will be discussed in this contribution.

Abstract

The Fermi free-electron laser (FEL) facility is operating since 2010 providing the user community with ultrashort pulses in the VUV- XUV range. Using the High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) setup, nearly transform-limited pulses with gigawatt peak power are made available. Furthermore, several multicolor and coherent control schemes are possible and highly required from the user community. To meet the request of extending the spectral range over the whole water window, an upgrade strategy of the FERMI facility has recently initiated. During the first phase of the upgrade, the single cascade FEL-1 will be adapted to operate either in Echo Enabled Harmonic Generation (EEHG) or in HGHG. Required modifications can be achieved with limited impact on FERMI operations and will improve FEL-1’s spectral range, spectral quality and flexibility. The second phase includes modification of the FEL-2 setup and will benefit from the experience gained with phase 1. The two phases will proceed in parallel to the linac upgrade aiming at extending the beam energy to 1.8 GeV. Abstract

FERMI is the seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) user facility at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, operating in the VUV to EUV and soft X-rays spectral range; the radiation produced by the seeded FEL is characterized by wavelength stability, low temporal jitter and longitudinal coherence in the range 100-4 nm. During 2018 a dedicated experiment has shown the potential of the Echo Enabled Harmonic Generation (EEHG) scheme [1] to cover most of this spectral range with a single stage cascade [2]. Such a scheme, combined to an increment of the beam energy and of the accelerator performances, could extend the FERMI operating range toward the oxygen k-edge. With this perspective, we present the development plans under consideration for the next 3 to 5 years. Abstract

FERMI is the seeded FEL user facility in Trieste, Italy, producing photons from the VUV to the soft X-rays with a high degree of coherence and spectral stability. Both FEL lines, FEL-1 and FEL-2, are available for users, down to the shortest wavelength of 4 nm. We report on the completion of the commissioning of the high energy FEL line, FEL-2, on the most recent progress obtained on FEL-1 and on the operational experience for users, in particular those requiring specific FEL configurations, such as two-colour experiments. Abstract

The S-band linac of FERMI, the seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, operates on a 24/7 basis accumulating more than 6000 hours of operation per year. The performance and operability requirements of a users facility pose stringent specifications on reliability and availability on all the systems of the machine and in particular on the RF power plants. This paper provides a review and discusses the operational experience with the S-band power plants, klystrons and modulators, operating at S-band in FERMI. Based on the satisfactorily results and following return of experience, upgrades of the existing power plants are being implemented in the continuous effort of extending the operability and availability of the systems. Abstract

The S-band linac of FERMI, the seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, has reached the peak on-crest electron energy of 1.55 GeV required for FEL-2 with the present layout. Different ways are being considered to extend the operating energy of the S-band linac up to 1.8 GeV. At the same time upgrades on the existing systems are investigated to address the requirements of operability of a users facility. This paper provides an overview of the developments that are under consideration and discusses the requirements and constraints for their implementation.

Abstract

FERMI, the seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, Italy, consists of two FEL lines. The FEL-1 facility, covering the wavelength range between 20 and 100 nm, was officially opened to external users. The shorter wavelength range, between 20 and 4 nm, is covered by the FEL-2 line, a double stage cascade operating in the “fresh bunch injection” mode, which is still under commissioning. We will report on the different FEL-1 operation modes that can be offered for users and assess the performance of the facility. The progress in the commissioning of FEL-2 will then be addressed, in particular reporting the performance attained at the lower wavelength limit; this aspect is of great interest for the user’s community of the FERMI seeded FEL since it allows to carry out experiments below the carbon K-edge., Proceedings of the 5th Int. FERMI has reached its nominal performance on both FEL lines, FEL-1 (12 eV to 62 eV) and FEL-2 (62 eV to 310 eV).
