Abstract

Chondrus crispus, or Irish moss, is a common edible red seaweed that can be found on rocky shores in the Northern Atlantic. The cell wall contains carrageenan and C. crispus is the original source of this commercially used thickener. Because of the ecological and economic importance of this red alga a relatively important research literature exists and one of the recent achievements in C. crispus research is the sequencing of its genome. In this chapter we review some of the literature with the aim to promote C. crispus as a model organism for florideophyte red seaweeds. We consider subjects like commercial and historical uses, ecology, genetics, population structure, mating systems, physiology, cell wall biology and genomics. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

Brown algae are important organisms both because of their key ecological roles in coastal ecosystems and because of the remarkable biological features that they have acquired during their unusual evolutionary history. The recent sequencing of the complete genome of the filamentous brown alga Ectocarpus has provided unprecedented access to the molecular processes that underlie brown algal biology. Analysis of the genome sequence, which exhibits several unusual structural features, identified genes that are predicted to play key roles in several aspects of brown algal metabolism, in the construction of the multicellular bodyplan and in resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Information from the genome sequence is currently being used in combination with other genomic, genetic and biochemical tools to further investigate these and other aspects of brown algal biology at the molecular level. Here, we review some of the major discoveries that emerged from the analysis of the Ectocarpus genome sequence, with a particular focus on the unusual genome structure, inferences about brown algal evolution and novel aspects of brown algal metabolism.

Abstract

The acquisition of mitochondria was a key event in eukaryote evolution. The aim of this study was to identify homologues of the components of the mitochondrial protein import machinery in the brown alga Ectocarpus and to use this information to investigate the evolutionary history of this fundamental cellular process. Detailed searches were carried out both for components of the protein import system and for related peptidases. Comparative and phylogenetic analyses were used to investigate the evolution of mitochondrial proteins during eukaryote diversification. Key observations include phylogenetic evidence for very ancient origins for many protein import components (Tim21, Tim50, for example) and indications of differences between the outer membrane receptors that recognize the mitochondrial targeting signals, suggesting replacement, rearrangement and/or emergence of new components across the major eukaryotic lineages. Overall, the mitochondrial protein import components analysed in this study confirmed a high level of conservation during evolution, indicating that most are derived from very ancient, ancestral proteins. Several of the protein import components identified in Ectocarpus, such as Tim21, Tim50 and metaxin, have also been found in other stramenopiles and this study suggests an early origin during the evolution of the eukaryotes.

Abstract

Brown algae (Phaeophyceae) are complex photosynthetic organisms with a very different evolutionary history to green plants, to which they are only distantly related1. These seaweeds are the dominant species in rocky coastal ecosystems and they exhibit many interesting adaptations to these, often harsh, environments. Brown algae are also one of only a small number of eukaryotic lineages that have evolved complex multicellularity (Fig. 1).We report the 214 million base pair (Mbp) genome sequence of the filamentous seaweed Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye, a model organism for brown algae, closely related to the kelps (Fig. 1). Genome features such as the presence of an extended set of light-harvesting and pigment biosynthesis genes and new metabolic processes such as halide metabolism help explain the ability of this organism to cope with the highly variable tidal environment. The evolution of multicellularity in this lineage is correlated with the presence of a rich array of signal transduction genes. Of particular interest is the presence of a family of receptor kinases, as the independent evolution of related molecules has been linked with the emergence of multicellularity in both the animal and green plant lineages. The Ectocarpus genome sequence represents an important step towards developing this organism as a model species, providing the possibility to combine genomic and genetic2 approaches to explore these and other aspects of brown algal biology further.

Abstract

The impact of energy crisis on agriculture has brought an urgent need to reduce the energy consumption, as soil tillage is the most expensive element in crop production. Direct seeding on the mulch of previous crop residues is becoming increasingly attractive; however the impacts of this technique in France on agriculture and environment are less well known. An experiment was conducted from 2000 to 2005 in Montpellier in France, to compare the effects of DSM and conventional tillage on yield and soil properties. The results indicate that DSM technique is an alternative and efficient technique for irrigated crops, L'impact de la crise énergétique sur l'agriculture rend plus que jamais nécessaire la réduction de la consommation d'énergie en s'intéressant en particulier au travail du sol qui représente le poste le plus important. Le semis direct sur couvert végétal (SCV) devient de plus en plus attractif ; cependant l'impact agronomique et environnemental du SCV en France est encore peu connu. Une expérimentation a été conduite de 2000 à 2005 à Montpellier (France), pour comparer les effets, sur le rendement et les propriétés du sol, du SCV et d'un système de travail du sol traditionnel. Les résultats montrent que la technique du SCV est une technique alternative intéressante et efficiente pour les cultures irriguées.

Abstract

We theoretically and experimentally evidence that fiber systems are convective systems since their nonlocal inherent properties, such as the dispersion and Raman effects, break the reflection symmetry. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations carried out for a fiber ring cavity demonstrate that the third-order dispersion term leads to the appearance of convective and absolute instabilities. Their signature is an asymmetry in the output power spectrum. Using this criterion, experimental evidence of convective instabilities is given in a fiber cavity pumped by a pulsed laser.

Abstract

An operative capacity based model for irrigation scheduling is presented. The first version, PILOTE1, is a two reservoir model whose capacities vary with crop root development. Only maximal root equivalent depth is calibrated. The other parameters are assumed to be either derivable from the literature or measured in the field. This model version provides accurate AET estimations for two contrasted years for the crop cycle duration of irrigated sorghum. For shorter periods (10 to 30 days), AET estimation performances decrease particularly when rain or irrigation occurs. Consequently, another version PILOTE2 is proposed by adding a superficial reservoir. The depth of this reservoir can be calibrated independantly of the other model compartments using the SDD method, micrometorological or TDR measurements. Without changing the other parameters obtained previously, this new modeling version improves significantly AET estimations on short periods for sorghum (1990-92) and sunflower (1994-95). The two step calibration methodology is convenient and efficient as it offers an improved water budget model for irrigation scheduling., On présente un modèle opérationnel de bilan hydrique basé sur le concept de réservoir évolutif. Une première version de ce modèle, PILOTE1, a été élaborée sur la base de 2 réservoirs dont les capacités varient avec la progression racinaire. Dans cette version, un seul paramètre représentant la profondeur racinaire maximale équivalente est ajusté. Les autres paramètres sont supposés être extraits de la littérature ou mesurés sur la parcelle. Cette première version fournit des estimations précises de l'ETR pour 2 années climatiquement contrastées à l'échelle du cycle végétatif du sorgho. Concernant de courtes périodes (10 à 30 jours), la qualité des simulations de l'ETR se dégrade très significativement en particlier pour des périodes renfermant un ou plusieurs épisodes de pluie ou d'irrigation. En conséquence, une deuxième version PILOTE2 a été développée. Elle consiste à adjoindre un réservoir superficiel de capacité fixe. L'épaisseur de ce réservoir superficiel est calée indépendamment des autres compartiments du modèle grâce à la méthode du SDD, la méthode micrométéorologue ou la méthode TDR. Sans opérer de changement sur les paramètres calés dans la version PILOTE1, cette nouvelle version du modèle améliore très significativement les estimations de l'ETR sur de courtes périodes dans le cas du sorgho (1990-92) et du tournesol (1994-95). Cette méthodologie de calage à deux étapes à la fois pratique et efficace contribue à améliorer les performances du modèle de pilotage des irrigations.
