Abstract

Sensitivity and resolution of space telescopes are directly related to the size of the primary mirror. Enabling such future extremely large space telescopes or even arrays of those will require to drastically reduce the areal weight of the mirror system. Utilizing a thin parabolic polymeric membrane as primary mirror offers the prospect of very low weight and the flexible nature of those membranes allows compactly store them upon launch. Upon deployment the structure is unfolded and the mirror shape restored. Being an extremely thin structure, an active shape correction is required. Utilizing a thermal control of the surface via radiative coupling, localized shape changes are imprinted into the membrane telescope. In this paper we present the modelling and experimental test of the radiative adaptive optics. A detailed modeling of the influence function of the radiative shaping onto the membrane mirror has been carried out. Experimentally we have been radiatively actuated the shape of a prototype mirror in closed loop with a wavefront sensor and proven that we can control the mirrors surface figure to a ~15nm RMS precision., Comment: 13 pages

Abstract

Large Fabry-Perot Interferometers are used in a variety of astronomical instrumentation, including spectro-polarimeters for 4-meter class solar telescopes. In this work we comprehensively characterize the cavity of a prototype 150 mm Fabry-Perot interferometer, sporting a novel, fully symmetric design. Of note, we define a new method to properly assess the gravity effects on the interferometer's cavity when the system is used in either the vertical or horizontal configuration, both typical of solar observations. We show that the symmetric design very effectively limits the combined effects of pre-load and gravity forces to only a few nm over a 120 mm diameter illuminated surface, with gravity contributing about 2 nm peak-to-valley (0.3 nm rms) in either configuration. We confirm a variation of the tilt between the plates of the interferometer during the spectral scan, which can be mitigated with appropriate corrections to the spacing commands. Finally, we show that the dynamical response of the new system fully satisfies typical operational scenarios. We conclude that large, fully symmetric Fabry-Perot interferometers can be safely used within solar instrumentation in both, horizontal and vertical position, with the latter better suited to limiting the overall volume occupied by such an instrument., Comment: 18 pages; accepted for publication in PASP. Abstract

The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. Abstract

Full-scale experimental tests are still needed to enhance knowledge on the seismic response of existing reinforced concrete buildings and to calibrate numerical models aimed at predicting damage. This study deals with pseudo-dynamic (PSD) tests and numerical modeling of full-scale multi-story infilled RC frames with different infill-to-frame connections. Nonlinear numerical models are calibrated using the experimental results at frame level and validated against the results of time-histories in terms of displacement demand, hysteretic response, and attained damage. This model is extended at building level and used to predicted damage to infills. The comparison with damage observed during post-earthquake inspections is reported and discussed. Abstract

Cellular functions are controlled by an extensive regulatory network, within which one can distinguish two principal classes of circuits. One is involved in cellular responses to extracellular cues via membrane receptors facing the extracellular space, while the other consists of internal sensors, controllers and effectors that operate to maintain homeostasis, coordinate different cellular functions, and optimize its overall system’s performance. The former class of receptor signaling circuit has been investigated over the last decades in the context of many cell functions and it is well understood, while the latter has been studied much less extensively, or by comparison, neglected, at least in many areas, despite its fundamental importance in physiology and pathology. This article focuses mainly on the second class of circuits, and, in particular, on the internal control mechanisms operating in the biosynthetic membrane transport (BMT) apparatus, a fundamental cell module with a major role in the cellular organization. The BMT apparatus is responsible for the synthesis, folding, processing and delivery to their final cellular destinations of a third of the eukaryotic proteome. Through these functions, the transport apparatus maintains the correct morphology, composition and function of most cellular organelles by influencing the cell–cell and cell–environment communications. Moreover, the BMT interacts with other cellular modules like energy metabolism and autophagy in the execution of complex programs initiated by surface receptors, such as cell growth, migration and differentiation. We analyze the molecular composition, design principles, coordination with other modules, and significance in physiology and pathology of the control systems operating in the BMT.

Abstract

Post-earthquake field inspections have outlined the poor seismic performance of non-conforming reinforced concrete (RC) beam-column joints (BCJs) of existing RC buildings. Experimental and analytical studies have demonstrated that the application of externally bonded fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs) is an efficient and cost-effective strengthening technique to improve the seismic performance of deficient BCJs. However, seismic losses for FRP-strengthened BCJs at different damage states (DSs) are currently not quantified. A potential seismic damage assessment tool is critical to obtain reliable estimations of the effects of FRP strengthening on reducing the expected damage and losses in existing buildings. Therefore, experimental-based fragility functions for FRP-strengthened corner and exterior BCJs at different limit states are proposed in this study. Experimental tests on 70 corner and 28 exterior FRP-strengthened BCJs are first collected. Then, DSs with increasing severity (i.e., light, moderate, and heavy) are defined according to widely recognized studies. These DSs are quantified on the basis of inter-story drift ratios (IDRs). After retrofitting, IDR-based fragility functions are generated for strengthened BCJs classified in terms of failure mode and achieved ductility level. The proposed functions are also compared with fragility functions available for non-conforming and conforming joints obtained from the literature. Finally, an application of the proposed fragility functions within a performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework for quantifying expected losses (ELs) and the benefits of FRP strengthening of BCJs is showed.

Abstract

No robust evidence is provided by literature regarding the management of intracranial hypertension following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is mostly due to the lack of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the presence of studies containing extreme heterogeneously collected populations and controversial considerations about chosen outcome. A scientific society should provide guidelines for care management and scientific support for those areas for which evidence-based medicine has not been identified. However, RCTs in severe TBI have failed to establish intervention effectiveness, arising the need to make greater use of tools such as Consensus Conferences between experts, which have the advantage of providing recommendations based on experience, on the analysis of updated literature data and on the direct comparison of different logistic realities. The Italian scientific societies should provide guidelines following the national laws ruling the best medical practice. However, many limitations do not allow the collection of data supporting high levels of evidence for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and decompressive craniectomy (DC) in patients with severe TBI. This intersociety document proposes best practice guidelines for this subsetting of patients to be adopted on a national Italian level, along with joint statements from "TBI Section" of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch) endorsed by the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). Presented here is a recap of recommendations on management of ICP and DC supported a high level of available evidence and rate of agreement expressed by the assemblies during the more recent consensus conferences, where members of both groups have had a role of active participants and supporters. The listed recommendations have been sent to a panel of experts consisting of the 107 members of the "TBI Section" of the SINch and the 111 members of the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the SIAARTI. The aim of the survey was to test a preliminary evaluation of the grade of predictable future adherence of the recommendations following this intersociety proposal. The following recommendations are suggested as representing best clinical practice, nevertheless, adoption of local multidisciplinary protocols regarding thresholds of ICP values, drug therapies, hemostasis management and perioperative care of decompressed patients is strongly recommended to improve treatment efficiency, to increase the quality of data collection and to provide more powerful evidence with future studies. Thus, for this future perspective a rapid overview of the role of the multimodal neuromonitoring in the optimal severe TBI management is also provided in this document. It is reasonable to assume that the recommendations reported in this paper will in future be updated by new observations arising from future trials. They are not binding, and this document should be offered as a guidance for clinical practice through an intersociety agreement, taking in consideration the low level of evidence.

Abstract

Modern seismic design and the retrofitting of buildings necessarily need to account for expected economic losses. Available refined and simplified procedures implemented in automatic computer tools allow for probabilistic loss assessments. These mostly rely on consequence functions derived by simulating the repair actions needed to restore a component to its pre-earthquake condition. However, due to the lack of data, only a few studies have benchmarked theoretical loss assessments with actual repair costs monitored in the aftermath of earthquake events. This paper analyses the actual repair costs of a database of 120 reinforced concrete residential buildings damaged by the 2009 earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy. The repair cost distributions and the correlation with observed earthquake damage are provided at the building and component levels. The repair costs of drift- and acceleration-sensitive components are also reported. This study outlines that repairing hollow clay brick infills and partitions that are typical of the Mediterranean construction standard constitutes the majority of total repair costs. Reliable consequence functions calibrated on actual cost data are proposed for different damage states.

Abstract

No robust evidence is provided by literature regarding the management of intracranial hypertension following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is mostly due to the lack of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the presence of studies containing extreme heterogeneously collected populations and controversial considerations about chosen outcome. A scientific society should provide guidelines for care management and scientific support for those areas for which evidence-based medicine has not been identified. However, RCTs in severe TBI have failed to establish intervention effectiveness, arising the need to make greater use of tools such as Consensus Conferences between experts, which have the advantage of providing recommendations based on experience, on the analysis of updated literature data and on the direct comparison of different logistic realities. The Italian scientific societies should provide guidelines following the national laws ruling the best medical practice. However, many limitations do not allow the collection of data supporting high levels of evidence for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and decompressive craniectomy (DC) in patients with severe TBI. This intersociety document proposes best practice guidelines for this subsetting of patients to be adopted on a national Italian level, along with joint statements from “TBI Section” of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch) endorsed by the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). Presented here is a recap of recommendations on management of ICP and DC supported a high level of available evidence and rate of agreement expressed by the assemblies during the more recent consensus conferences, where members of both groups have had a role of active participants and supporters. Abstract

Questo contributo riporta due esempi di calcolo del rinforzo in FRP di nodi trave-pilastro in c.a svolti utilizzando il software JOINT FRP. Il progetto del rinforzo è stato effettuato sia in ottica di rinforzo locale, sia in ottica di miglioramento sismico valutando l’efficacia del rinforzo in termini di incremento di sicurezza e salto di classe di rischio. Particolare attenzione è rivolta al calcolo del numero di ancoraggi utili per evitare la delaminazione d’estremità e garantire una applicazione dal solo esterno.

Abstract

Le carenze principali nelle costruzioni esistenti in cemento armato sono per lo più localizzate nei nodi non confinati, ossia nodi di parete o nodi d'angolo. Una significativa riduzione della vulnerabilità dei manufatti può essere ottenuta mediante l'utilizzo di tecniche di rafforzamento locale, mirate a sanare le principali carenze strutturali che danno luogo ai meccanismi di collasso che si manifestano a causa dei terremoti. I materiali compositi possono risultare una soluzione particolarmente vantaggiosa in quanto aumentano la capacità di sostenere l’azione sismica e consentono di attuare interventi a basso impatto ed invasività, applicabili, nel caso di rinforzo di nodi non confinati, per lo più dall’esterno.

Abstract

Background: In February and Mach 2020, two mass swab testing campaigns conducted in Vo’, Italy demonstrated the extent of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection and the feasibility of epidemic suppression. Methods: We tested 86% of the Vo’ population (2,602 subjects) in May with three immuno-assays detecting antibodies against the spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) antigens, a neutralisation assay and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Subjects testing positive to PCR in February/March or a serological assay in May were tested again in November. Findings: Combining the results obtained with the three assays, we estimate a seroprevalence of 3.5% (95% Credible Interval (CrI) 2.8%-4.3%) in May. In November, all assays showed a reduction in antibody titres, though 98.8% (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 93.7%-100.0%) of sera still reacted against at least one antigen. Conversely, 18.6% (95% CI 11.0%-28.5%) showed a marked increase of antibody or viral neutralisation reactivity between May and November, linked to documented or likely re-exposures. We found significant differences in the magnitude and persistence of the antibody response by age group but not by symptom occurrence, hospitalisation, or sex. Analysis of the serostatus of 1,118 households indicated a 27.3% (95% CrI 19.2%-34.6%) probability of SARS-CoV-2 transmission among household members and that 81.8% (95% CrI 55.9%-95.2%) of transmission could be attributed to 20% of infections. Contact tracing correctly identified 44% of the infected subjects and had limited impact on the epidemic. Interpretation: We find evidence of antibody persistence up to nine months post infection. Different assays provided significantly different seroprevalence estimates, making it challenging to compare seroprevalence estimates globally. Due to the high population susceptibility and the limited impact of contact tracing, rigorous testing and improvements in contact tracing are essential to control SARS-CoV-2. Abstract

No robust evidence is provided by literature regarding the management of intracranial hypertension following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This is mostly due to the lack of prospective randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the presence of studies containing extreme heterogeneously collected populations and controversial considerations about chosen outcome. A scientific society should provide guidelines for care management and scientific support for those areas for which evidence-based medicine has not been identified. However, RCTs in severe TBI have failed to establish intervention effectiveness, arising the need to make greater use of tools such as Consensus Conferences between experts, which have the advantage of providing recommendations based on experience, on the analysis of updated literature data and on the direct comparison of different logistic realities. The Italian scientific societies should provide guidelines following the national laws ruling the best medical practice. However, many limitations do not allow the collection of data supporting high levels of evidence for intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring and decompressive craniectomy (DC) in patients with severe TBI. This intersociety document proposes best practice guidelines for this subsetting of patients to be adopted on a national Italian level, along with joint statements from “TBI Section” of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery (SINch) endorsed by the Neuroanesthesia and Neurocritical Care Study Group of the Italian Society of Anesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI). Presented here is a recap of recommendations on management of ICP and DC supported a high level of available evidence and rate of agreement expressed by the assemblies during the more recent consensus conferences, where members of both groups have had a role of active participants and supporters. Abstract

Lactoferrin, a multifunctional cationic glycoprotein, secreted by exocrine glands and neutrophils, possesses an antiviral activity extendable to SARS-CoV-2.We performed in vitro assays proving lactoferrin antiviral activity through direct attachment to both virus and cell surface components. This activity varied according to concentration (100/500μg/ml), multiplicity of infection (0.1/0.01) and cell type (Vero E6/Caco-2 cells).Interestingly, the in silico results strongly supported the hypothesis of a direct recognition between the lactoferrin and the Spike S glycoprotein, thus hindering the viral entry into the cells.Hence, we conducted a clinical trial to investigate effect and tolerability of a liposomal lactoferrin formulation as a supplementary nutraceutical agent in mild-to-moderate and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.A total of 92 mild-to-moderate (67/92) and asymptomatic (25/92) COVID-19 patients were recruited and divided in 3 groups according to the administered regimen. Thirty-two patients, 14 hospitalised and 18 in home-based insolation received oral and intranasal liposomal bovine lactoferrin (bLf), 32 hospitalised patients were treated with standard of care treatment (hydroxychloroquine, azitromicin and lopinavir/darunavir), and 28, in home-based isolation, did not take any medication. Furthermore, 32 COVID-19 negative, not-treated, healthy subjects were added as a control group for ancillary analysis.bLf-supplemented COVID-19 patients obtained an earlier and significant (p < 0,0001.) median rRT-PCR SARS-COV-2 RNA negative conversion than standard of care-treated and non-treated COVID-19 patients (14.25 vs 27.13 vs 32.61 days, respectively).In addition, bLf-supplemented COVID-19 patients showed significant fast clinical symptoms recovery than standard of care-treated and non-treated COVID-19 patients. Moreover, in bLf-supplemented patients, a significant decrease of either serum ferritin or IL-6 levels or host iron overload, all parameters characterizing inflammatory processes, were observed. Serum D-dimers was also found significantly decreased following bLf supplement. No adverse events were reported.These in vitro and in vivo observations led us to speculate a potential and safe supplementary role of Blf in the management of mild-to-moderate and asymptomatic COVID-19 patients.

Abstract

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a progressively growing pathology to afford by a spinal surgeon due to the aging of the population, associated with better treatment management and the best diagnosis and treatment solutions are greatly discussed. Nowadays that scientific literature is progressively increasing to identify the gold standard in diagnosis and treatment can be very challenging. This is particularly evident in spinal surgery with many different indications not only in different countries but also in the same local reality. In this scenario, many neurosurgical societies works to identify some guideline or recommendations to help spinal surgeons in daily practice. Furthermore, in an era in which legal issues are increasingly present in clinical practice to have some indications globally accepted can be very useful. World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) few years ago starts this process creating a list of recommendations originating from a worldwide steering committee to respect all the local reality. The spinal section of Italian Neurosurgical Society decides to adopt the WFNS recommendations with some revision basing on Italian scenario. The steering committee of the Spinal Section of Italian Neurosurgical Society identify 7 groups to review the literature of the last 10 years about different topics on CSM and to analyses the WFNS recommendations to adapt it to the Italian daily practice. The statements were discussed and voted in 2 sessions to obtain the final version. A list of recommendations on natural course and clinical presentation; diagnostic tests; conservative and surgical treatment; anterior, posterior and combined surgical treatment; role of neurophysiological monitoring and follow-up and outcome was created with only few new or revised statements respect the ones of WFNS. The Spine Section of Italian Neurosurgical Society create a list of recommendations that represent the more contemporary treatment concepts for CSM as presented in the highest quality clinical literature and best clinical practices available on this subject.

Abstract

The paper illustrates the seismic performance assessment of a bridge substructure simulating typical existing Italian highway bridges . The reference structural system is a reinforced concrete (R C) 1:3 scale single span bridge, tested on the shaking table system at the University of Naples, Italy. The testing facility consists of two 3m x 3m square shake tables . Low strength concrete and smooth bars were used for the bridge sub - assemblage to study the response of existing RC bridges without adequate seismic details . Different support conditions, namely simply supported and base isolated, were considered in the testing program. Natural historical records were used as earthquake strong motions, scale d at increasing peak ground accelerations. The results of the experimental incremental dynamic analysis on the “as built” structure, are used to evaluate the effectiveness of base isolation strategies commonly adopted for the seismic retrofit of the bridge deck.

Abstract

This is a contribution to the economic dispatch problem of combined electrical and heat power microgrids. A mixed integer linear microgrid model has been developed; the microgrid operations optimization problem has been formulated using Mixed-Integer Linear Programming and Model Predictive Control technique has been applied to take system uncertainties into account. The proposed optimization algorithm has been applied to a tertiary site microgrid, located in Finland; the obtained numerical results have been compared with a heuristic algorithm.
