Despite decades of research, the Mpemba Effect challenges scientists, prompting further investigation and refinement of existing hypotheses. This work uses optical tools such as thermography to analyze and study the Mpemba effect on drops. We analyze times and contact angle changes with temperature with an easily controlled experiment. This work contributes to the ongoing discourse surrounding the Mpemba Effect, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and experimental rigor to unravel the complexities of this intriguing phenomenon. The feasibility to manufacture scaffolds of poly-lactic acid reinforced with Zn particles by fused filament fabrication is demonstrated for the first time. Filaments of 2.85 mm in diameter of PLA reinforced with different weight fractions of $\mu$m-sized Zn - 1 wt. \% Mg alloy particles (in the range 3.5 to 17.5 wt. \%) were manufactured by a double extrusion in method in which standard extrusion is followed by a precision extrusion in a filament-maker machine. Filaments with constant diameter, negligible porosity and a homogeneous reinforcement distribution were obtained for Zn weight fractions of up to 10.5\%. It was found that the presence of Zn particles led to limited changes in the physico-chemical properties of the PLA that did not affect the window temperature for 3D printing nor the melt flow index. Thus, porous scaffolds could be manufactured by fused filament fabrication at 190\textdegree C with poly-lactic acid/Zn composites containing 3.5 and 7 wt. \% of Zn and at 170\textdegree C when the Zn content was 10.5 wt. \% with excellent dimensional accuracy and mechanical properties.

Nowadays, methodologies coming from studying physical systems are being applied to the description of a wide variety of complex systems. In particular, one can study thermodynamical methods to describe the overall behavior of many systems, independent of the precise microscopic construction. In this paper, a real Mexican highway is studied as a cellular automata system using available official data released by the Mexican Government. The system studied is the Cuernavaca bypass which was modified in 2016. Official data allows to compare the highway before and after the modifications. As more complex thermodynamic variables such as entropy is difficult to define and measure in discrete traffic models, it is shown how other more simple variables such as the standard deviation can be enough to have a complete analysis of the system. More specifically, it is shown how standard deviation can be seen as a measure of order. Results from the study of the highway show how, taking a minimal measure such as ordering the transit of heavy trucks can reduce up to 32\% the travel time from one end to another. Increasing interest in the acquisition of biotic and abiotic resources from within the deep sea (e.g. fisheries, oil-gas extraction, and mining) urgently imposes the development of novel monitoring technologies, beyond the traditional vessel-assisted, time-consuming, high-cost sampling surveys. The implementation of permanent networks of seabed and water-column cabled (fixed) and docked mobile platforms is presently enforced, to cooperatively measure biological features and environmental (physico-chemical) parameters. Video and acoustic (i.e. optoacoustic) imaging are becoming central approaches for studying benthic fauna (e.g. quantifying species presence, behaviour, and trophic interactions) in a remote, continuous, and prolonged fashion. Imaging is also being complemented by in situ environmental-DNA sequencing technologies, allowing the traceability of a wide range of organisms (including prokaryotes) beyond the reach of optoacoustic tools. Purpose: To analyze the air density dependence of the response of the new SourceCheck 4pi ionization chamber, manufactured by PTW. Methods: The air density dependence of three different SourceCheck 4pi chambers was studied by measuring 125I sources. Measurements were taken by varying the pressure from 746.6 to 986.6hPa in a pressure chamber. Three different HDR 1000 Plus ionization chambers were also analyzed under similar conditions. A linear and a potential-like function of the air density were fitted to experimental data and their achievement in describing them was analyzed. Results: SourceCheck 4pi chamber response showed a residual dependence on the air density once the standard pressure and temperature factor was applied. The chamber response was overestimated when the air density was below that under normal atmospheric conditions. A similar dependence was found for the HDR 1000 Plus chambers analyzed. A linear function of the air density permitted a very good description of this residual dependence, better than with a potential function. No significant variability between the different specimens of the same chamber model studied was found. Conclusion: The effect of overestimation observed in the chamber responses once they are corrected for the standard pressure and temperature may represent a non-negligible ~4% overestimation in high altitude cities as ours (700 m AMSL). There are two main physical properties needed to fabricate 1D photonic structures and form perfect photonic bandgaps: the quality of the thickness periodicity and the refractive index of their components. Porous silicon (PS) is a nano-structured material widely used to prepare 1D photonic crystals due to the ease of tuning its porosity and its refractive index by changing the fabrication conditions. Since the morphology of PS changes with porosity, the determination of PS's refractive index is no easy task. To find the optical properties of PS we can use different effective medium approximations (EMA). In this work we propose a method to evaluate the performance of the refractive index of PS layers to build photonic Bragg reflectors. Through a quality factor we measure the agreement between theory and experiment and therein propose a simple procedure to determine the usability of the refractive indices. We test the obtained refractive indices in more complicated structures, such as a broadband Vis-NIR mirror, and by means of a Merit function we find a good agreement between theory and experiment. With this study we have proposed quantitative parameters to evaluate the refractive index for PS Bragg reflectors. This procedure could have an impact on the design and fabrication of 1D photonic structures for different applications.

With the R$^{3}$B-LAND setup at GSI we have measured exclusive relative-energy spectra of the Coulomb dissociation of $^{18}$C at a projectile energy around 425~AMeV on a lead target, which are needed to determine the radiative neutron-capture cross sections of $^{17}$C into the ground state of $^{18}$C. Those data have been used to constrain theoretical calculations for transitions populating excited states in $^{18}$C. This allowed to derive the astrophysical cross section $\sigma^{*}_{\mathrm{n}\gamma}$ accounting for the thermal population of $^{17}$C target states in astrophysical scenarios. The experimentally verified capture rate is significantly lower than those of previously obtained Hauser-Feshbach estimations at temperatures $T_{9}\leq{}1$~GK. Network simulations with updated neutron-capture rates and hydrodynamics according to the neutrino-driven wind model as well as the neutron-star merger scenario reveal no pronounced influence of neutron capture of $^{17}$C on the production of second- and third-peak elements in contrast to earlier sensitivity studies.

Background: Models describing nuclear fragmentation and fragmentation-fission deliver important input for planning nuclear physics experiments and future radioactive ion beam facilities. These models are usually benchmarked against data from stable beam experiments. In the future, two-step fragmentation reactions with exotic nuclei as stepping stones are a promising tool to reach the most neutron-rich nuclei, creating a need for models to describe also these reactions. Purpose: We want to extend the presently available data on fragmentation reactions towards the light exotic region on the nuclear chart. Furthermore, we want to improve the understanding of projectile fragmentation especially for unstable isotopes. Method: We have measured projectile fragments from 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes colliding with a carbon target. These measurements were all performed within one experiment, which gives rise to a very consistent dataset. We compare our data to model calculations. Results: One-proton removal cross sections with different final neutron numbers (1pxn) for relativistic 10,12-18C and 10-15B isotopes impinging on a carbon target. Comparing model calculations to the data, we find that EPAX is not able to describe the data satisfactorily. Using ABRABLA07 on the other hand, we find that the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon needs to be decreased from 27 MeV to 8.1 MeV. With that decrease ABRABLA07 describes the data surprisingly well. Conclusions: Extending the available data towards light unstable nuclei with a consistent set of new data have allowed for a systematic investigation of the role of the excitation energy induced in projectile fragmentation. Most striking is the apparent mass dependence of the average excitation energy per abraded nucleon. Nevertheless, this parameter, which has been related to final-state interactions, requires further study.

The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes 25O and 26O are investigated experimentally and theoret- ically. In this first R3B-LAND experiment, the unbound states are populated at GSI via proton- knockout reactions from 26F and 27F at relativistic energies around 450 MeV/nucleon. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into 24O plus one or two neutrons, the 25O ground- state energy and lifetime are determined, and upper limits for the 26O ground state are extracted. In addition, the results provide evidence for an excited state in 26O at around 4 MeV. The ex- perimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

Most of the thermodynamic analysis of ovens are focused on efficiency, but they need to behaves under real-life conditions, then the effectiveness of the ovens plays a crucial role in their design. In this paper we present a thermodynamical model able to describe the temperature evolution in ovens, furnaces or kilns to harden, burn or dry different products and which provides a methodology to design these heating devices. We use the required temperature evolution for each product and process as main ingredient in the methodology and procedure to design ovens and we place in the right role the efficiency criteria. We use global energy balance equation for the oven under transient situation as the thermodynamic starting point for developing the model. Our approach is able to consider different configurations for these heating devices, or recirculating or open situations, etc.

We present the dynamic velocity profiles of a Newtonian fluid (glycerol) and a viscoelastic Maxwell fluid (CPyCl/NaSal in water) driven by an oscillating pressure gradient in a vertical cylindrical pipe. The frequency range explored has been chosen to include the first three resonance peaks of the dynamic permeability of the viscoelastic fluid / pipe system. Three different optical measurement techniques have been employed. Laser Doppler Anemometry has been used to measure the magnitude of the velocity at the centre of the liquid column. Particle Image Velocimetry and Optical Deflectometry are used to determine the velocity profiles at the bulk of the liquid column and at the liquid--air interface respectively. The velocity measurements in the bulk are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of a linear theory. The results, however, show dramatic differences in the dynamic behaviour of Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids, and demonstrate the importance of resonance phenomena in viscoelastic fluid flows, biofluids in particular, in confined geometries., Comment: Paper to be published in Physical Review E, other related papers in http://www.cie.unam.mx/~arp

In this paper a recent variable anticipation cellular automata model for single-lane traffic flow is extended to analyze the situation of free and congested flow in the Highway from Mexico City to Cuernavaca. This highway presents free flow in standard days; but in the returning day of long weekends or holidays it exhibits congested flow and in rush hours jamming appears. The global entropy generation rate in the zero-mean oscillatory flow of a Maxwell fluid in a pipe is analyzed with the aim at determining its behavior at resonant flow conditions. This quantity is calculated explicitly using the analytic expression for the velocity field and assuming isothermal conditions. The global entropy generation rate shows well-defined peaks at the resonant frequencies where the flow displays maximum velocities. It was found that resonant frequencies can be considered optimal in the sense that they maximize the power transmitted to the pulsating flow at the expense of maximum dissipation., Comment: Paper accepted to be published in Phys. A systematic method to fabricate porous silicon one dimensional photonic crystals has been engineered to have a photonic bandwidth up to 2000nm. The observation of the tailorability of the photonic bandgap (PBG) underscores the requirement of the large refractive index contrast for making broad PBG structures. A cellular automaton model of traffic flow taking into account velocity anticipation is introduced. The strength of anticipation can be varied which allows to describe different driving schemes. We find phase separation into a free-flow regime and a so-called $v$-platoon in an intermediate density regime. In a $v$-platoon all cars move with velocity $v$ and have vanishing headway. The velocity $v$ of a platoon only depends on the strength of anticipation. At high densities, a congested state characterized by the coexistence of a 0-platoon with several $v$-platoons is reached. The results are not only relevant for automated highway systems, but also help to elucidate the effects of anticipation that play an essential role in realistic traffic models. From a physics point of view the model is interesting because it exhibits phase separation with a condensed phase in which particles move coherently with finite velocity coexisting with either a non-condensed (free-flow) phase or another condensed phase that is non-moving., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, some figures in color

In this paper we present an experimental study of the dynamic responses of a Newtonian fluid and a Maxwellian fluid under an oscillating pressure gradient. We use laser Doppler anemometry in order to determine the velocity of each fluid inside a cylindrical tube. In the case of the Newtonian fluid, the dissipative nature is observed and the response obeys the Zhou and Sheng universality (PRB 39, 12027 (1989)). We analyze the effect of frequency on the width of a single finger displacing a viscoelastic fluid. We derive a generalized Darcy's law in the frequency domain for a linear viscoelastic fluid flowing in a Hele Shaw cell. This leads to an analytic expression for the dynamic permeability that has maxima which are several orders of magnitude larger than the static permeability. We then follow an argument of de Gennes to obtain the smallest possible finger width when viscoelasticity is important. Using this, and a conservation law, we obtain a lowest bound for the width of a single finger displacing a viscoelastic fluid. Our results indicate that when a small amplitude signal of the frequency that maximizes the permeability is overimposed to a constant pressure drop, gigantic variations are obtained for the finger width., Comment: Paper submitted to EPL, two figures

We solve the problem of a Bose or Fermi gas in $d$-dimensions trapped by $% \delta \leq d$ mutually perpendicular harmonic oscillator potentials. From the grand potential we derive their thermodynamic functions (internal energy, specific heat, etc.) as well as a generalized density of states. The Bose gas exhibits Bose-Einstein condensation at a nonzero critical temperature $T_{c}$ if and only if $d+\delta >2$, and a jump in the specific heat at $T_{c}$ if and only if $d+\delta >4$. Specific heats for both gas types precisely coincide as functions of temperature when $d+\delta =2$. The trapped system behaves like an ideal free quantum gas in $d+\delta $ dimensions. For $\delta =0$ we recover all known thermodynamic properties of ideal quantum gases in $d$ dimensions, while in 3D for $\delta =$ 1, 2 and 3 one simulates behavior reminiscent of quantum {\it wells, wires}and{\it dots}, respectively., Comment: 14 pages including 3 figures and 3 tables

The novel concept of Citation Mining, a combination of citation bibliometrics and text mining, is used for the phenomenological description. The light-scattering spectrum for a Maxwell fluid in a steady state due to the presence of an external temperature gradient is computed. In such a fluid heat conduction is assumed to be governed by the classical Fourier law. The calculation is carried out through the use of fluctuating hydrodynamics. We present a model of traffic flow, with rules that describe the behaviour of automated vehicles in an open system. We show first of all that the fundamental diagram of this system collapses to a point, where states of free and jammed traffic can coexist in phase space. This leads us to consider separately the roles of average velocities and densities as better descriptors of the actual state of the traffic. Next, we observe that the transition between free and jammed traffic as a function of the braking parameter R is different for high and low initial densities, in the steady state; it turns out to be 'smeared out' for low densities, a behaviour which is already portended by the transient behaviour of the system. Our results indicate strongly that, at least for such models, two effective temperatures (one related to R, and the other to the density) are needed to describe the global behaviour of this system in statistical mechanical terms. In recent years the modelling of traffic flow using methods from statistical physics, especially cellular automata models have allowed simulations of large traffic networks faster than real time. In this paper, we study a probabilistic cellular automaton model for microsimulations of traffic flow of automated vehicles in highways. This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring. We study the equilibrium properties by including a parameter of safe distance in the model and calculate the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow vs. density graph) considering parallel dynamics. This is done numerically by computer simulations of the model and by means of an analysis of speed variance., Comment: six figures

We focus in this work on the study of traffic in open systems using a modified version of an existing cellular automaton model. We demonstrate that the open system is rather different from the closed system in its 'choice' of a unique steady-state density and velocity distribution, independently of the initial conditions, reminiscent of self-organised criticality. Quantities of interest such as average densities and velocities of cars, exhibit phase transitions between free flow and the jammed state, as a function of the braking probability R in a way that is very different from closed systems.
