Abstract Objective This systematic review aimed at assessing the effect of the repositioned bone lid on bone augmentation in lateral sinus lift in pre-clinical in vivo and clinical studies. Secondary aims were to report on the healing of the bone window and to assess the implant survival rate. Material and methods Animal and human studies comparing lateral maxillary sinus floor elevation in combination or not with the repositioned bone lid were retrieved from MEDLINE (PubMed), Web of Science and Cochrane online library. Studies published in English up to April 2022 and reporting on histological and/or radiographic outcomes were considered. Case reports, case series and reviews were excluded. A hand search was also conducted. Risk of bias was assessed and meta-analysis performed to investigate the effect of the bone lid on new bone formation. Results After screening, 5 animal studies (4 in rabbits, 1 in sheep) and 2 clinical studies (1 RCT, 1 case–control) were included. Meta-analysis confirmed a higher new bone formation in rabbits at 2 and 8 weeks using the bone lid. The two clinical studies investigated lateral sinus lift with concomitant implant placement and reported similar results and high short-term implant success rate in both test and control groups. Conclusions The meta-analysis provided moderate evidence that the repositioned bone lid favored the formation of new bone to a higher extent as compared to resorbable membranes in animal studies. Implant success seems not to be influenced by the technique in the short term.

Purpose: To describe the emerging evidence concerning etiologic factors and pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in peri-implant inflammatory diseases. Materials and Methods: An electronic search for articles published until November 2022 was conducted in MEDLINE by three independent reviewers to identify the manuscripts' reporting data on etiologic factors and pathophysiologic mechanisms associated with peri-implant diseases. Results: Current evidence suggests that peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis are inflammatory conditions linked to a microbial challenge. However, in recent years there has been increasing evidence indicating that certain peri-implant inflammatory conditions may not be primarily related to biofilm-mediated infectious processes but rather to other biologic mechanisms, such as a foreign body response. Conclusions: Current evidence in the dental and medical literature opens new avenues for a more complex interpretation of the etiopathogenetic factors involved in peri-implant diseases. A better understanding of various factors related to the host response, including dysbiosis mechanisms associated with changes in microbiota composition, is necessary for a more precise physiopathologic characterization of these diseases. Background: The potential link between alopecia areata (AA) and eosinophilia is unclear, as well as its clinical manifestations in these patients' subsets. Methods: This is a monocentric retrospective observational study in which clinical and laboratory data were summarized and evaluated the AA subset with concurrent eosinophilia. Results: In a sample of 205 AA patients, 38 (18.5%) were classified as AA with eosinophilia. Interestingly, this subset of patients had a statistically higher prevalence of atopia and nail abnormalities (p < 0.05) than AA without eosinophilia. AA patients with eosinophilia had a 3.70 higher odds of more severe hair loss versus age‐ and gender‐matched AA without eosinophilia. Conclusions: AA patients with eosinophilia had distinctive clinical and laboratory characteristics, so future studies may potentially explore the use of IL‐5 inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

(1) Background: The use of alumina particles for surface treatment of dental implants is a common practice aimed at enhancing osseointegration. However, the biological effects of residual alumina particles on implant surfaces remain a subject of debate. This systematic review evaluates the impact of residual alumina particles on the osseointegration, biocompatibility, and bacterial adhesion of dental implants based on available in vivo experimental animal studies. (2) Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify relevant studies. The inclusion criteria focused on experimental animal studies that assessed the biological effects of alumina-blasted dental implants. Data extraction was carried out, and quality assessments were performed using the SYRCLE risk-of-bias tool. (3) Results: Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, involving various animal models, such as rabbits, pigs, dogs, and sheep. The findings demonstrated that residual alumina particles did not negatively impact osseointegration. Some studies reported accelerated bone growth and improved osseointegration with residual alumina. Additionally, residual alumina showed potential bactericidal properties, reducing bacterial adhesion. (4) Conclusions: The available evidence from animal studies suggests that residual alumina particles do not adversely affect the osseointegration and biocompatibility of dental implants. These particles may even enhance bone growth and reduce bacterial adhesion. However, due to the scarcity of human studies and the impracticality of histological assessments in humans, further research, including long-term clinical trials, is necessary to confirm these findings. Introduction: Transparent orthodontic aligners have revolutionized dentistry and orthodontics since the 1990s, offering advantages over traditional fixed appliances in terms of hygiene, comfort, and aesthetics. With the increasing demand for invisible orthodontic treatments, clear aligners have gained popularity, prompting research into materials to enhance their efficacy and performance. Materials and Methods: A scoping review was conducted using electronic databases (Pubmed, Medline, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Scopus) to identify studies on clear aligner materials published in the last decade. Selection criteria focused on studies specific to dental materials, excluding those unrelated to materials or clear aligners. Results: The review included 11 relevant studies evaluating 17 different clear aligner materials. Materials such as polyvinyl chloride derivatives, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU), and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) were commonly used. The studies assessed mechanical, physical, chemical, and optical properties, as well as thermoforming effects, stress decay, and surface characteristics. Discussion and Conclusions: Various materials exhibited distinct properties, with PETG materials offering transparency and flexibility, while TPU-based materials like Smart Track providing durability and elasticity. Thermoforming affected mechanical properties, with both PETG and TPU materials showing decreased efficacy post-thermoforming. Polymer blending improved mechanical properties, but variations existed among different brands and materials. Clear aligner materials exhibit diverse characteristics, influencing their suitability for orthodontic use. PETG-based materials offer transparency and flexibility, while TPU-based materials provide durability and elasticity. However, both materials undergo mechanical changes post-thermoforming, emphasizing the need for further research to optimize material performance for clinical use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Patients with mucosal cysts in the maxillary sinus require special consideration in patients who require implant therapy for the restoration when undergoing implant therapy for the restoration of the posterior maxillary dentition. Treatment strategies for these clinical situations remain controversial in the literature. Thus, this study seeks to describe a safe and effective therapeutic strategy for sinus augmentation in patients with pre‐existing maxillary antral cysts. Methods: A total of 15 patients and 18 sinuses were consecutively enrolled in this cohort study and underwent maxillary antral cyst treatment by needle aspiration and simultaneous maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA). During surgical procedures, threeimplants (Zimmer Biomet, Indiana, USA) were positioned in 11 sinuses and two implants (Zimmer Biomet, Indiana, USA) were positioned in 5 sinuses. Results: Overall implant success and survival rates were 100% and 97.8%, respectively at 1 year and 5‐year follow‐ups. Crestal bone resorption averaged 0.3 ± 0.2 mm 5‐year post‐loading, showing bone stability. Implant survival rate at 5‐year follow‐up expressed predictability of the technique comparable to historical data when MSA was performed alone. Quality of life evaluation at 1‐week post‐op showed similar results to published historical data. In 81% (13 sinuses), the CBCT examination at 5‐year follow‐up showed no cyst reformation, in 19% (3 sinuses) cyst reformation was visible, but smaller in size when compared to the pre‐op CBCT evaluation, and all the patients were asymptomatic. Purpose: To evaluate the performance of fixed complete dental prostheses supported by axial and tilted implants after at least 3 years of follow-up. Materials and Methods: An electronic search plus a hand search up to April 2021 was undertaken. Clinical studies were selected using specific inclusion criteria, independent of the study design. The main outcomes were cumulative implant survival rate, marginal bone level changes, and complications, after ≥ 3 years of follow-up. The difference in outcomes between axial and tilted implants and between the maxilla and mandible was evaluated using meta-analysis and the Mantel-Cox test. Results: Out of 824 articles retrieved, 24 were included. In total, 2,637 patients were rehabilitated with 2,735 full prostheses (1,464 maxillary, 1,271 mandibular), supported by 5,594 and 5,611 tilted and axial implants, respectively. In a range between 3 and 18 years of follow-up, 274 implants failed. The cumulative implant survival rate was 93.91% and 99.31% for implants and prostheses, respectively. The mean marginal bone level change was moderate, exceeding 2 mm in only two studies. Marginal bone loss was significantly lower around axial compared with tilted implants (P < .0001), whereas it was not affected by arch (maxilla vs mandible; P = .17). Conclusion: Fixed complete dental prostheses supported by tilted and axially placed implants represent a predictable option for the rehabilitation of edentulous arches. Further randomized trials are needed to determine the efficacy of this surgical approach and the remodeling pattern of marginal bone in the long term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The position and inclination of the incisors play a crucial role in achieving optimal outcomes in orthodontic and orthognathic surgical treatment, given their impact on facial aesthetics. Background/objectives: Due to numerous distorting factors that affect the reliability of the ANB angle, the aim of the present work is to evaluate a more constant parameter over time, the anterior nasal spine (ANS), and explore whether aligning the incisal margin of the upper incisors with the anterior nasal spine could be a reliable indicator for achieving appropriate labial support in pre-surgical orthodontic preparation. Methods: From a pool of 500 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans, 50 CBCT examinations displaying a Class 1 skeletal pattern (ANB = 2° ± 2°) with an intermediate (3.2–4 mm) or mixed (4–6 mm) sagittal maxillary position (MX), as determined by the 3D multiplanar total face approach (TFA), were selected and compared with CBCT examinations randomly chosen from the initial pool. Moreover, 12 landmarks were identified, and measurements were automatically obtained, using software, and recorded. Mean and standard deviation values were calculated for each sample. A comparison was made between the two samples, aligning the results with the morphological analysis of the anterior nasal spine and the sagittal position of the upper maxilla. Results: In Class 1 subjects, the distance between the incisal margin and the plane passed in relation to the anterior nasal spine should range between −1 mm and 1 mm, aligned with or slightly ahead of the anterior nasal spine or slightly ahead of this limit. Conclusions: The anterior nasal spine can serve as a reliable reference point for planning the position of the upper incisors, with excessive proclination or retroclination from this reference point deemed unacceptable. Common challenges encountered for atrophic maxilla rehabilitation are the inadequate width and height of attached keratinized mucosa (AKM) and shallow vestibular depth. This study presents a buccally displaced palatal (BDP) flap technique to increase the tissue thickness and AKM width at the second-stage surgery and reestablish the correct fornix depth. The peri-implant pocket depths, modified Plaque Index score, modified sulcus Bleeding Index score, and soft tissue recession were evaluated 6 and 12 months after prostheses loading. A total of 52 implants were placed and analyzed, and no implant failures were found. No significant changes in peri-implant parameters were observed between 6 and 12 months, and mean recession was less than 0.2 mm after 12 months. Though this change was statistically significant, it was clinically irrelevant. The results demonstrate that adequately healthy peri-implant soft tissues and substantial dimensional stability of vestibular soft tissues at the 1-year follow-up were achieved with the BDP flap technique. The BDP flap could represent a viable option for increasing the width and the height of AKM and establishing the correct maxillary fornix depth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
