Abstract

Chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity is a well-known complication of several very effective systemic anticancer treatments, mainly presenting as cognitive impairment (“chemo-brain”) and peripheral neuropathy. The social and economic effects of long-lasting chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity on patients’ lifestyles and their relationships are under-investigated, and their impact is, therefore, largely unknown. In this study, we used a web-based questionnaire to record the self-reported perception of chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity on cancer patients’ health status, but also on several different aspects of their daily life. From the study results, it emerged that the impact of chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity on personal, social, and working activities is very high. A similar effect was also observed when the psychological impact is assessed. Moreover, there is evidence suggesting that the management of CIPN is suboptimal; this is partially due to a lack of effective drugs, but also of appropriate advice from healthcare providers. In conclusion, this study provides evidence for the relevance of the impact on the explored aspects of the daily life of cancer patients and spotlights the need for a larger and more structured investigation on these long-term side effects of anticancer chemotherapy.

13. Thickness and Roughness Effect of Pr2NiO4+δ Coating on the Normal Spectral Emittance.

Abstract

Pr2NiO(4+δ) coatings of rare earth nickelate oxide were prepared through RF magnetron co-sputtering, combined with an appropriate heat treatment. The study focused on optimizing the growth conditions to enhance the thermal emittance of the coatings, taking into account the influence of thickness and roughness. The research findings revealed interesting insights. Firstly, by analyzing room temperature infrared reflectivity and studying the temperature dependence of the normal spectral emittance in the range of 500 cm−1 to 5500 cm−1, it was observed that the total emittance increased as the coating thickness increased. However, this increase tended to approach a saturation value at higher thicknesses. Additionally, the study demonstrated that a coating thickness of 2.8 μm was sufficient to effectively shield the substrate's infrared thermal response. This suggests the potential application of these coatings for thermal management purposes. Furthermore, the influence of roughness on the emittance was predominantly observed in the spectral range of 1200 cm−1 to 3600 cm−1. This finding highlights the importance of considering surface roughness when designing coatings for optimal thermal properties. In summary, the research provided valuable insights into the growth conditions and the impact of thickness and roughness on the thermal emittance of Pr2NiO4+δ coatings. Abstract

The infrared emittance of single-crystal rutile TiO 2 has been measured from room temperature to 2000 K in dry air for two polarization states. A very strong thermally induced opacification phenomenon has been found, with the sample being completely opaque in the near-infrared range several hundred K before its melting point. A large contribution from small-polaron hopping conduction can explain this anomalous degree of opacification, much stronger than similar phenomena present in other octahedrally coordinated oxide materials. These quasiparticles manifest in the high-temperature optical conductivity as a thermally activated contribution, with an activation energy close to that of DC conductivity. The small-polaron nature of this phenomenon is strengthened by the observation of broad near-infrared bands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Online forums play an important role in connecting people who have crossed paths with cancer. These communities create networks of mutual support that cover different cancer-related topics, containing an extensive amount of heterogeneous information that can be mined to get useful insights. This work presents a case study where users' posts from an Italian cancer patient community have been classified combining both count-based and prediction-based representations to identify discussion topics, with the aim of improving message reviewing and filtering. We demonstrate that pairing simple bag-of-words representations based on keywords matching with pre-trained contextual embeddings significantly improves the overall quality of the predictions and allows the model to handle ambiguities and misspellings. By using non-English real-world data, we also investigated the reusability of pretrained multilingual models like BERT in lower data regimes like many local medical institutions. Abstract

The normal spectral emittance of α-Al2O3 single crystal has been measured from room temperature up to the liquid state and from 20 cm-1 up to 10 000 cm-1, in two polarization configurations. The spectra were fitted with a semi-quantum dielectric function model. AlO4 structure units are revealed within the phonon spectral range more than a hundred degrees below the melting point when heating from the solid state. In parallel, the anomalous increase of emittance observed within the transparency spectral range with the approach to melting appears strongly correlated. Implications on the electronic structure are discussed: the existence of small polaron conduction is suggested which has never been mentioned before. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
