The engineering of phononic resonances in ferroelectric structures appears as a new knob in the design and realization of novel multifunctional devices. In this work we experimentally study phononic resonators based on insulating (BaTiO3, SrTiO3) and metallic (SrRuO3) oxides. We experimentally demonstrate the confinement of acoustic waves in the 100 GHz frequency range in a phonon nanocavity, the time and spatial beatings resulting from the coupling of two different hybrid nanocavities forming an acoustic molecule, and the direct measurement of Bloch-like oscillations of acoustic phonons in a system formed by 10 coupled resonators. By means of coherent phonon generation techniques we study the phonon dynamics directly in the time-domain. The metallic SrRuO3 introduces a local phonon generator and transducer that allows for the spatial, spectral and time-domain monitoring of the complex generated waves. We have studied the polarization dependence of coherent phonons in the topological insulator Bi2Te3. Using polarization-dependent femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy, we measured coherent phonons as a function of angle when the pump and probe polarizations were fixed, and the crystal orientation was rotated. For isotropic detection, depending on the spot position, oscillations either from only low- and high-frequency phonons of A1g symmetry, or in addition from the mode at 3.6 THz were observed. All the modes were found to be independent of the orientation of electric field vector with respect to the crystal axes testifying to their full symmetry while no modes of lower symmetry appeared in any polarization geometry. For anisotropic detection both modes of Eg symmetry could be detected, but their amplitudes were considerably smaller than those of A1g symmetry. To clarify the coherent phonon assignment and the process of coherent phonon generation in Bi2Te3, the time-domain measurements were complemented by spontaneous Raman scattering. The comparison of frequency- and time-domain results and the polarization dependence suggest that the 3.6 THz mode belongs to crystalline Te arising due to tellurium segregation. We study the relaxation of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in ultra-thin free-standing silicon membranes. Using an ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling, we observe that the decay time of the first-order dilatational mode decreases significantly from \sim 4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from \sim 194 to 8 nm. The experimental results are compared with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity. Our results provide insight to understand some of the limits of nanomechanical resonators and thermal transport in nanostructures.

We propose sub-harmonic resonant optical excitation with femtosecond lasers as a new method for the characterization of phononic and nanomechanical systems in the gigahertz to terahertz frequency range. This method is applied for the investigation of confined acoustic modes in a free-standing semiconductor membrane. By tuning the repetition rate of a femtosecond laser through a sub-harmonic of a mechanical resonance we amplify the mechanical amplitude, directly measure the linewidth with megahertz resolution, infer the lifetime of the coherently excited vibrational states, accurately determine the system's quality factor, and determine the amplitude of the mechanical motion with femtometer resolution.

We tailor the shape and phase of the pump pulse spectrum in order to study the coherent lattice dynamics in tellurium. Employing the coherent control via splitting the pump pulse into a two-pulse sequence, we show that the oscillations due to A1 coherent phonons can be cancelled but not enhanced as compared to single pulse excitation. We further demonstrate that a decisive factor for the coherent phonon generation is the bandwidth of the pulse spectrum and not the steepness of the pulse envelope. We also observe that the coherent amplitude for long pump pulses decreases exponentially independent of the shape of the pulse spectrum. Finally, by varying the pulse chirp, we show that the coherent amplitude is independent of while the oscillation lifetime is dependent on the chirp sign., Comment: submitted to New Journal of Physics
