The evaporation of water/1,2-hexanediol binary drops shows remarkable segregation dynamics, with hexanediol-rich spots forming at the rim, thus breaking axisymmetry. While the segregation of hexanediol near the rim can be attributed to the preferential evaporation of water, the symmetry-breaking and spot formation could not yet be successfully explained. With three-dimensional simulations and azimuthal stability analysis of a minimal model, we investigate the flow and composition in the drop. We show that a slightly non-monotonic surface tension causes the emergence of a counter-rotating Marangoni vortex in the hexanediol-rich rim region, which subsequently becomes azimuthally unstable and forms the observed spots. Accurate measurements reveal that the surface tension is indeed non-monotonic (~0.3 mN/m). This work provides valuable insight for applications like inkjet printing or spray cooling.

We investigate the rapid spreading dynamics of a viscoelastic drop on a solid. Upon contact, surface tension drives a fast motion of the contact line along the substrate. Here, we resolve this motion for viscoelastic liquids by experiments on aqueous polymer solutions of varying concentration. It is found that while the contact line motion is only mildly affected by the polymers, the interface profile becomes much sharper owing to singular polymer stress. This behaviour is reminiscent of that observed for viscoelastic drop coalescence; in this light we revisit the analogy between spreading and coalescence, which sheds new light also on the spreading of Newtonian liquids., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The breakup and coalescence of drops are elementary topological transitions in interfacial flows. The breakup of a drop changes dramatically when polymers are added to the fluid. With the strong elongation of the polymers during the process, long threads connecting the two droplets appear prior to their eventual pinch-off. Here, we demonstrate how elasticity affects drop coalescence, the complement of the much studied drop pinch-off. We reveal the emergence of an elastic singularity, characterised by a diverging interface curvature at the point of coalescence. Intriguingly, while the polymers dictate the \emph{spatial} features of coalescence, they hardly affect the \emph{temporal} evolution of the bridge. The water bottle flipping challenge consists of spinning a bottle, partially filled with water, and making it land upright. It is quite a striking phenomenon, since at first sight it appears rather improbable that a tall rotating bottle could make such a stable landing. Here we analyze the physics behind the water bottle flip, based on experiments and an analytical model that can be used in the classroom. Our measurements show that the angular velocity of the bottle decreases dramatically, enabling a nearly vertical descent and a successful landing. The reduced rotation is due to an increase of the moment of inertia, caused by the in-flight redistribution of the water mass along the bottle.
