Marijos Gimbutienės ‒ mokslininkės, teoretikės ir archeologės praktikės, veiklios, įvairiapusiškos ir jautrios asmenybės – intelektualinis palikimas, ypač lituanistinė jo dalis, iki šiol yra palyginti mažai tyrinėta. Šiame straipsnyje atskleidžiamas M. Gimbutienės ryšys su šeima ir išryškinamas jos santykis su mama Veronika Janulaityte-Alseikiene. Straipsnio autorė kelia ir pagrindžia mintį, kad ypatingas ryšys su mama ir kitomis šeimos moterimis, jų pavyzdys ir autoritetas padėjo M. Gimbutienei įžvelgti ir atpažinti archeologinėje medžiagoje veiklų ir kūrybišką moteriškąjį pradą bei sudarė prielaidas ieškoti moteriškųjų deivių pasaulio archeologinėse kultūrose. The intellectual legacy of Marija Gimbutas – scholar, theoretician and practical archeologist, an active, versatile and sensitive personality – has been hitherto little investigated, including in particular her Lithuanian studies. The article focuses on the relationship that Marija Gimbutas had with her family, especially highlighting her connection with her mother – Veronika Janulaitytė-Alseikienė. Gimbutas’ mother Veronika Janulaitytė-Alseikienė (1883–1971) was among the very few Lithuanian women of the peasant descent that managed to obtain the university education at the turn of the 19th – 20th centuries. In 1908, she defended her doctoral thesis in medicine in Berlin. However, due to various circumstances, including nostalgia for her homeland, she discontinued her scholarly work in Germany, returning to the Russian Empire of that time. After the WWI, together with her husband Danielius Alseika (doctor, politician and editor of numerous Lithuanian publications) Veronika established the first Lithuanian hospital in Vilnius, engaging in the medical, social and educational activities. Marija Gimbutas’ parents were a rather different personalities. Her father was an idealist ardently pursuing his social and political ideas, while her mother was a rational and practical woman, who took care of maintaining the hospital, social welfare and family matters. Since early childhood, Marija’s mother enfolded her daughter with her care, attempting to provide her with everything that she considered valuable, and devoting special attention to her education. Gimbutas’ cousin, professor Meilė Lukšienė has described her mother as a “silent soul”, since she could not fully realize her talents, but devoted all her energy to enable her daughter to do so. It is obvious that Marija inherited most of her character features from her mother, including courage, determination, inexhaustible energy, industriousness, and vitality. In spite of the passionate care that she received from her mother, in her childhood and youth Marija regarded her father as her personal ideal and as an example to follow. She considered her rational and pragmatic mother as a given, as someone providing her with good living conditions, and directed her admiration and love to her father. She felt inspired by Danielius Alseika’s ideals, his broad humanitarian worldview, his articles on the Lithuanian culture and his devoted work as editor and publisher of the Lithuanian books. She regarded her father as an embodiment of human creativity. However, he died when Marija was just fifteen years old. It took her considerable time afterwards to fully appreciate her mother’s love, her dedicated care of the children, and her hard work to ensure family’s welfare and security. The author of the article assumes that the active, vital and creative energy, which Marija saw embodied in her father’s image and political activities, subsequently inspired her impressive theory of the Indo-Europeans spreading across the whole of Europe. And only later, her down-to-earth side of life became more visible, manifesting in her theory of matristic culture of the ancient Europe. Marija Gimbutas fully and consciously appreciated her connection with her mother only after she got married and had her daughter Danutė born in 1943. Unfortunately, the development of this connection was suspended because of the necessity for her to flee from Lithuania, which was occupied by the Soviet troops in 1944. Further on, Marija’s connection with her mother and other female members of her family (her aunt Julija Matjošaitienė and her cousin Meilė Matjošaitytė-Lukšienė) was maintained from emigration. The first letter from Marija reached Lithuania only after seven years following her departure, and regular correspondence could be established only after Stalin’s death. However, when acquiring this possibility, Marija corresponded very actively: she has written over 400 letters and over 200 postcards to her mother. Another way of maintaining connection with her family was sending packages. Ample gifts were shipped from America to Lithuania; however, Marija received equally dear presents from Lithuania in return. Veronika Alseikienė saw sending gifts as an expression of her love to her daughter, as means of creating the Lithuanian atmosphere in Marija’s home and supporting her Lithuanian cultural activities in America. For Marija, things that she received were primarily means of connection with her mother. Only in the summer of 1960, there finally was hope of meeting in person. Although possibilities of visiting the Soviet Union from the USA were severely restricted, Marija Gimbutas managed to visit her mother at least seven times. These short encounters allowed her to establish a closer connection, and during long times of separation to envision her mother’s home in Kaunas. Anyway, Marija Gimbutas had a special talent of feeling her loved ones in spite of the distance that separated them. She has described her extraordinary state of mind and her telepathic ability of seeing and feeling her mother, who was hospitalized after a surgery at that time. She experienced a deep feeling of connection also on the day of her mother’s funeral, having a vision of her mother finally being able to visit her daughter’s home in Topanga – at least after her death. For Gimbutas, considerations of life and death were not merely academic studies of the ancient European religion, but constituted an inherent part of her personality. She discussed the indestructible nature of the vital energy, and the human ability to feel close proximity with the deceased, who never left us completely. Šiame straipsnyje aptariamas Marijos Gimbutienės gyvenimas ir darbas tiriant Europos priešistorę, o asmeninė žymios archeologės biografija atskleidžia, kaip jos vaikystė augant Lietuvoje suformavo akademinių tyrimų linkmę ir interesus. Profesinis mokslininkės indėlis bei pasiekimai pristatomi pateikiant septynis jos akademinio gyvenimo aspektus, t. y. jos laiką įgyjant aukštąjį išsilavinimą, darbą gilinantis į Lietuvos folklorą ir simbolizmą, Senosios Europos neolito laikotarpio tyrimus, kurganų hipotezės iškėlimą bei įsitraukimą į baltų tyrimus, kasinėjimus pietryčių Europoje, taip pat jos darbus deivės ir simbolizmo temomis. Šiame straipsnyje taip pat apžvelgiami akademinės ir plačiosios visuomenės požiūriai į M. Gimbutienės darbus. Marija Gimbutas (Gimbutienė) is a renowned archaeologist who specialised in European prehistory. This paper explores her life and work, including her personal biography, showing how her upbringing in Lithuania shaped her academic interests and orientations. This paper also reviews her professional achievements and contributions via the lenses of seven aspects of her academic life, namely her time in higher education, her work on Lithuanian folklore and symbolism, her explorations of Old Europe during the Neolithic, her Kurgan Hypothesis and engagement with Baltic studies, her excavations in southeast Europe, her work on the Goddess, and her symbolism work. It also examines academic and popular reactions to her writing and her influence on scholars and public discourse.

Šis straipsnis yra pirmas bandymas nuosekliai ir analitiškai peržvelgti visą turimą medžiagą, liudijančią apie sudėtingą senosios lietuvių religijos fenomeną, šaltiniuose vadinamą „Deivės“. Straipsnyje bandoma skelbtą bei archyvinę medžiagą ne tik sutelkti, bet ir pateikti šio fenomeno interpretaciją, remiantis šaltinių kritikos, filologinės hermeneutikos ir religijų istorijos bei fenomenologijos prielaidomis. Deivės čia suvokiamos ne kaip religinės ar pasaulėžiūrinės sistemos konstruktas, bet kaip XVI–XVII valstietiško pasaulėvaizdžio dėmuo. Apibendrinus šaltinių duomenis galima teigti, kad deivės – tai moterų vadovaujamas kultas, iš kurio vyrai nėra išskiriami. Nors Deivių garbinimu rūpinasi moterys, jame dalyvauja ir šeimos tėvas, šeimos motina mirdama Deives patiki savo dukterims. Daugelis senųjų reliktinių aukojimų turi bendruomeninį pobūdį. Kaimas susirenka į aukojimo vaišes dažniausiai lūžiniais metų momentais. Nesunkiai pastebimi chtoniniai ir vaisingumo motyvai: kiaulė, juodas paršelis, tamsūs apeiginiai drabužiai. Atskiro dėmesio verti galimi lunariniai motyvai. Treji devyneri aukojamos duonos gabalėliai gali būti siejami su mėnulio kultu. Deivių ambivalencija šaltiniuose atskleista itin ryškiai – jų aukurai yra sacrum telkiniai, itin pavojingi nepašvęstiesiems, jos baudžia neatliekančius apeigų, jos gali būti piktos ir kenkėjiškos be matomos priežasties, todėl reikalingos maldymo. Paplitęs ir svarbus Deivių kultas vėliau sunyko ir dingo iš liaudies atminties bei papročių. The present article is the first attempt to consistently and analytically review all available material testifying of the complex phenomenon of ancient Lithuanian religion, which is referred to as the 'Goddesses' in the sources. The article attempts not only to concentrate the published and archive material, but also to present an interpretation of this phenomenon based on the presumptions of criticism, philological hermeneutics and history and phenomenology of religion provided in the sources. Here the Goddesses are perceived not as a construct of religious or worldview system, but as a component of the peasant world perception in the 16th - 17th c. Having generalised the data of the sources, it may be stated that the Goddesses are a cult lead by women, from which the men are not excluded. Although women take care of the worship of the Goddesses, the father of the family also participates, the mother of the family at her death entrusts the worship of Goddesses to her daughters. Many old relict sacrifices are of communal nature. A village community usually gathers to a sacrificial feast at the breaking points of the year. Chthonic and fertility motifs are easy to note: a pig, a black piglet, dark ceremonial clothes. Lunar motifs are worthy of individual attention. Three nines of sacrificed bread pieces may be associated with the cult of the moon. The ambivalence of the Goddesses is revealed especially clearly in the sources: their altars are sacrum concentrations very dangerous to the non-consecrated; they punish those who do not perform the rites, they may be vicious and malicious without an apparent reason and therefore, require soothing. The widespread and important cult of the Goddesses has diminished and disappeared from the memory and customs of the people.

Tyrimo objektas: lietuvių deivė Žemyna ir jos santykis su kitomis baltų deivėmis, susijusiomis su chtoniškąja mitinio pasaulio sfera, turinčiomis mitinės Motinos bruožų. Straipsnis skaidomas į dvi dalis. Pirmojoje dalyje kalbama apie Žemynos sąsajas su aisčių Dievų motina, trakų-frigų Semele, taip pat apžvelgiamos tokios deivės kaip latvių Žemės motė, Mara, lietuvių, latvių Laima bei Laumė ir lietuvių Austėja. Antroji šio straipsnio dalis bus publikuojama kitame „Liaudies kultūros“ numeryje. Tikslai: atskleisti žemės deivės ryšį ir bendrus bruožus su kitomis baltų deivėmis, pademonstruoti jos vietą ir vaidmenį moteriškųjų dievybių kontekste. Metodai: rekonstrukcijos, struktūrinis-tipologinis, lyginamasis-istorinis. Išvados: Žemyna galėjusi būti viena svarbiausių baltų deivių, įkūnijusia charakteringiausius moteriškos chtoninės dievybės, paprastai kvalifikuojamos kaip Žemė motina ar Deivė motina, požymius. Kai kuriuos chtoniškumo ar mitinės Motinos ypatumus įžvelgiame ir kitose baltų deivėse. In this paper Laurinkienė focuses on the Lithuanian Goddess Žemyna (cites the earliest sources in which she is mentioned and defines her functions) and her relation to other Baltic Goddesses associated with the chthonic realm of the mythic world and to which the features of the mythic Mother are attributed. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the links between Žemyna, the Aistian Mother of Gods and the Thraco-Phrygian Semele. Furthermore, such deities are discussed as the Latvian Mother of Earth, Mara, Lithuanian and Latvian Laima and Laumė, and Lithuanian Austėja. The second part of the paper will appear in the following edition of the journal Liaudies kultūra (Folk Culture). It aims at pinning down the relation between Žemyna and other Baltic Goddesses and describing her status as well as role in the context of female deities. The earliest (I c.) female Baltic deity mentioned in a written source (by Tacitus) is the Goddess of Gods (mater deum) who could be identified with Žemyna. They both have distinct maternal qualities and the status of the divine mother. Both were venerated by peasants and associated with the chtonic animal, boar or pig. All the other Goddesses evoked in the paper, that is to say the Latvian Mother of Earth, Mara, Lithuanian, Latvian and Prussian Laima and Laumė, as well as Lithuanian Austėja also functioned as divine Mothers. As of the prehistoric times motherhood was revered as the fundamental female function, as the essence of womanhood both in real women and in the surrounding world. All the discussed Goddesses posses some of the characteristics of the chthonic Goddess. The Mother of the Earth, Mara, protected the dead. She was also prominent in the areas of agriculture and stock-raising. Laima and Laumė were also associated with agriculture, whereas Austėja protected bees as the field of a sedentary agricultural activity.

Šiame straipsnyje, remiantis XV-XVII a. rašytiniais šaltiniais bei kitų tyrinėtojų (S. Stanevičiaus, J. Basanavičiaus, A. Šleicherio, K. Būgos, P. Skardžiaus, V. Mažiulio, V. Toporovo, N. Vėliaus, M. Gimbutienės, A. J. Greimo, G. Beresnevičiaus) atliktais darbais, pasitelkus folkloro, kalbos, archeologijos, istorijos ir kitokius lietuvių bei prūsų šaltinius, aptariama su mirtimi susijusių dievybių ir mitinių būtybių kilmė, funkcijų pobūdis, regioninė priklausomybė, joms priskiriamos apeigos, galimas jų santykis su kitų indoeuropiečių tautų dievais ir deivėmis bei su krikščioniškąja tradicija. Straipsnyje taip pat norima pažvelgti į mirties dievybių kaitą XV-XX a. bei nustatyti tos kaitos priežastis bei aplinkybes. Šaltinių apžvalga, senosiose prūsų žemėse išlikę toponimai bei vardo etimologija leidžia teigti, jog Patulas laikytinas prūsų mirusiųjų (mirusiųjų pasaulio) dievu, kurį XVI a. pirmoje pusėje iš panteono išstūmė sukrikščionintas Pikulas su savo pagalbininkais. J. Lasickio paminėti Veliona ir Ežiagulis sietini su ežioje (kape) gulinčiu mirusiuoju (velioniu). XVII-XX a. lietuvių tautosakoje, tikėjimuose, papročiuose užfiksuotas Giltinės įvaizdis tapatus visoje Europoje sutinkamam mirties įvaizdžiui: a) Giltinė – sudžiūvusi, baltai apsirengusi moteris; b) Giltinė – žmogaus griaučiai su dalgiu. Tikėtina, jog tokiam Giltinės įvaizdžiui įtakos turėjo viduramžių Europoje itin populiarus Danse Macabre siužetas. XVII a. pab. – XX a. šaltiniuose ir tautosakoje Giltinė vadinama įvairių ligų, sukeldavusių masines epidemijas ir mirties protrūkius, vardais (Maras, Maro mergos, Kolera, Pavietrė). The present article following written sources of XV-XVII century and material of investigators (S. Stanevičius, J. Basanavičius, A. Schleicher, V. Mažulis, V. Toporovas, N. Vėlius, M. Gimbutienė, A. J. Greimas, G. Beresnevičius) performed by involving folk, linguistics, archaeology, history and other Lithuanians and Prussians references discusses origin, functional character, regional dependence of gods and goddesses connected with death as well as related rituals, their relation with other Indo-European gods and goddesses and Christian tradition. The article also aims to review variations of death gods during XV-XX centuries as well as to establish reasons and circumstances of these variations. Review of sources, toponymy and etymology of names let us to assume that Patollo is Prussian god of dead (underworld), which in the first half of XVI century in a pantheon was replaced by Christianity affected Picollus with his assistants.Veliona and Ežiagulis, mentioned by J. Lasitskij, are connected with dead (lich) buried in ground (grave). Image of the Reaper in XVII-XX century Lithuanian folklore, beliefs and customs is equal to symbol of death available throughout the Europe: a) The Reaper – lean woman dressed in white; b) The Reaper – human skeleton with scythe. It is believed that image of the Reaper was influenced by Dance Macabre theme popular if Europe of Middle Ages. In references and folklore of the end of the XVII and the XX century the Reaper has names of various diseases, causing mass epidemics and death outbreaks, such as Plague, Bint of Plague, Cholera, Pavietrė

Šiame straipsnyje, remdamiesi istoriniais šaltiniais bei jau kitų tyrinėtojų atliktais darbais, pasitelkę folkloro, kalbos, archeologijos ir kt. lietuvių, latvių, prūsų šaltinius, aptariama su bitininkyste ir bitėmis susijusių dievybių Austėjos, Bubilo (Babilo), Bičbirbio (Bičių birbulio) kilmė, funkcijų pobūdis, regioninė priklausomybė, jiems priskiriamos apeigos, galimas jų santykis su kitų indoeuropiečių tautų dievais ir deivėmis bei su krikščioniškąja tradicija. Prieita prie išvadų: 1. Visų su bitėmis ir bitininkyste susijusių dievybių (Austėjos, Bubilo (Babilo), Bičbirbio (Bičių birbulio) vardai laikytini onomatopėjinės kilmės. 2. Skirtinguose regionuose ir skirtingu laiku užfiksuotų su bitėmis ir bitininkyste susijusių dievybių Austėjos, Bubilo (Babilo), Bičbirbio (Bičių birbulio) funkcijos didžia dalimi sutampa – rūpinimasis bičių spietimu, spiečių suleidimu į avilius, medaus gausa. Tokiame kontekste Austėjos ir Bubilo (Babilo) opozicija (darbščios kūrėjos ir besaikio vartotojo, smaguriautojo) laikytina visiškai nepagrįsta. 3. Skirtingu laiku ir skirtingų autorių perteikta informacija leidžia Austėją, Bubilą (Babilą) ir Bičbirbį (Bičių birbulį) laikyti sritinėmis (regioninėmis) dievybėmis, atsiradusiomis senosios religijos (sykiu ir panteono) nuosmukio metu. Šią išvadą patvirtina ir tai, jog su bitėmis ir bitininkyste susijusių dievybių Austėjos, Bubilo (Babilo), Bičbirbio (Bičių birbulio) vardai neminimi tautosakoje, neužfiksuoti toponimikoje, hidronimikoje, antroponimikoje ir pan. This article, referring to historic sources and work of other researchers, folklore, language, archaeology and other Lithuanian, Latvian, Prussian sources, discusses the origin of deities related to bee-keeping and bees – Austėja, Bubilas (Babilas), Bičbirbis (Bičių birbulis), their functions, regional belonging, ceremonies related to them, their possible relationship with gods and goddesses of other Indo-European nations and with the Christian tradition. The following conclusions were made: 1. The names of all deities related to bee-keeping and bees (Austėja, Bubilas (Babilas), Bičbirbis (Bičių birbulis)) are to be regarded to be of onomatopoeic origin. 2. Functions of bee-keeping and bee related deities Austėja, Bubilas (Babilas), Bičbirbis (Bičių birbulis) found in different regions and at different times mostly coincide – taking care of bee swarming, letting bees into hives, abundance of honey. In this context, the opposition of Austėja and Bubilas (Babilas) (of a hard-working creator and an excessive consumer, sweet tooth) is to be regarded as absolutely ungrounded. 3. Information collected at different times and by different authors permits to consider Austėja, Bubilas (Babilas) and Bičbirbis (Bičių birbulis) to be regional deities that appeared at the time of decline of the old religion (also of the pantheon). This conclusion is also supported by the fact that the names of bee-keeping and bee related deities Austėja, Bubilas (Babilas), Bičbirbis (Bičių birbulis) are not mentioned in folklore, are not reflected in toponymy, hydronymy, anthroponymy, etc.

Straipsnio objektas – deivės Austėjos mitologinis paveikslas ir jo santykis su bitės įvaizdžiu lietuvių dainuojamojoje tautosakoje. Tikslas – atkreipiant dėmesį į istorinį kultūrinį kontekstą, gretinant mitologijos ir tautosakos duomenis, iškelti prielaidą apie dainų bitės ir mitologijos šaltinių Austėjos sąryšį, ypač pabrėžiant jų vaidmenį vedybų kontekste. Kadangi senovės baltų pasaulėžiūroje bičių bendruomenė prilyginama žmonių bendruomenei, tai Austėją galime laikyti ne tik bičių deive, kaip nuo J. Lasickio laikų priimta, bet apskritai šeimos (bičių ir žmonių) deive. Jos sfera – vaisingumas ir gausa, paremta daugėjimo principu (šeimos narių skaičiaus augimas, bičių nešamas medus, moterų išaustų drobių rietimų didėjimas). Bitės įvaizdis dažniausias vestuvinėse dainose, kur lygiagrečiai apdainuojama bitelė, siuvanti korį bei nešanti medų, ir mergelė, pinanti vainiką bei audžianti drobes kraičiui. Nors lietuvių liaudies dainose Austėjos vardas nėra užfiksuotas, tačiau deivės ir dainų bitės veiklos sfera ta pati: ji „perveda“ savo globotinę iš mergystės į moterystę. Taigi mitologijos šaltinių deivė Austėja ir dainų bitė funkciniu atžvilgiu sutampa. Yra pagrindo manyti, jog lietuvių liaudies dainų įvaizdyje atsispindi Austėjos dieviškoji veikla. Austėją galima laikyti (vedybinio) virsmo deive – kaip ir Laimą (gimimo) bei Giltinę (mirties). The subject of the article is mythological depiction of goddess Austėja and its relation with the image of bee in Lithuanian singing folklore. The article aims to admit an assumption on relation of bee in folk songs and goddess Austėja in mythological sources considering historical cultural context and by comparing data of folklore and mythology, especially highlighting their role in the contexts of wedding. Whereas community of bees in world-view of ancient Balts is equal to community of humans, so Austėja may not be goddess of bees only, as it has been accepted since times of Jan Lasickij, but in general a goddess of family (bees and humans). Her sphere is fecundity and abundance based on the principle of increase (increase of family members, of honey carried by bees, of linen rolls wove by women). Image of bee is the most often in wedding songs, where bee making comb and carrying honey and a girl plating crown and weaving cloths for dowry are depicted in parallel. Despite of the name of Austėja has not been recorded in Lithuanian folk songs, however a sphere of the goddess and a bee is the same. She “takes” her ward from virginity to matrimony. Thus goddess Austėja of mythological sources and bee of songs are similar in terms of their functions. It may be assumed that divine activity of Austėja is reflected in Lithuanian folk songs. Austėja may be considered as goddess of (matrimonial) transformation, the same as Laima (of birth) and Giltine (of death).
