Background: Type I X-Ray bursts (XRBs) are energetic stellar explosions that occur on the surface of a neutron star in an accreting binary system with a low-mass H/He-rich companion. The rate of the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$)$^{37}$K reaction may influence features of the light curve that results from the underlying thermonuclear runaway, as shown in recent XRB stellar modelling studies. Purpose: In order to reduce the uncertainty of the rate of this reaction, properties of resonances in the compound nucleus $^{38}$Ca, such as resonance energies, spins, and particle widths, must be well constrained. Method: This work discusses a study of resonances in the $^{38}$Ca compound nucleus produced in the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$) reaction. The experiment was performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, with the ReA3 facility by measuring proton scattering using an unstable $^{37}$K beam. The kinematics were designed specifically to identify and characterize resonances in the Gamow energy window for the temperature regime relevant to XRBs. Results: The spins and proton widths of newly identified and previously known states in $^{38}$Ca in the energy region of interest for the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$)$^{37}$K reaction have been constrained through an R-Matrix analysis of the scattering data. Conclusions: Using these constraints, a newly estimated rate is applied to an XRB model built using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), to examine its impact on observables, including the light curve. It is found that the newly determined reaction rate does not substantially affect the features of the light curve.

Background: The rate of energy production in the hot-CNO cycle and breakout to the rapid-proton capture process in Type I X-ray bursts is strongly related to the $^{14}$O($\alpha,p$)$^{17}$F reaction rate. The properties of states in $^{18}$Ne near $E_x=6.1-6.3$ MeV are important for understanding this reaction rate. Experiment: The RESOLUT radioactive-ion beam facility at Florida State University was used to study $^{18}$Ne resonances around this energy region using $^{17}$F(p,p)$^{17}$F elastic scattering on a polypropylene target under inverse kinematics. Scattered protons were detected in a silicon-strip detector array while recoiling $^{17}$F ions were detected in coincidence in a gas ionization detector. Analysis: An $R$-matrix analysis of measured cross sections was conducted along with a reanalysis of data from previous measurements. Results: All the data analyzed are well described by a consistent set of parameters with with a $1^-$ assignment for a state at 6.14(1) MeV. A second comparable solution is also found with a $3^-$ assignment for the 6.14(1) MeV state. The rate of the $^{14}$O($\alpha$,p)$^{17}$F reaction that is determined from the two solutions differs by up to an order of magnitude., Comment: Update name of one of the authors

The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy (n,p) and (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of (p,n) reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the $^{58}$Fe(p,n)$^{58}$Co reaction in inverse kinematics with a 3.66$\pm$0.12 MeV/nucleon $^{58}$Fe beam (corresponding to 3.69$\pm$0.12 MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of 20.3$\pm$6.3 mb and served as a benchmark for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. This novel approach marks a significant advancement in experimental nuclear astrophysics, as it paves the way for studying astrophysically important (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei produced at FRIB.

The fill factor (FF) is a critical parameter for solar cell efficiency, but its analytical description is challenging due to the interplay between recombination and charge extraction processes. An often overlooked yet significant factor contributing to FF losses, beyond recombination, is the influence of charge transport. In most state-of-the-art organic solar cells, the primary limitations of the FF arise not just from non-radiative recombination but also from low conductivity. A closer look reveals that even in the highest efficiency cells, performance losses due to transport resistance are significant, highlighting the need for refined models to predict the FF accurately. Here, we extend the analytical model for transport resistance to a more general case. Drawing from a large set of experimental current-voltage and light intensity-dependent open-circuit voltage data, we systematically incorporate crucial details previously omitted in the model. Consequently, we introduce a straightforward set of equations to predict the FF of a solar cell, enabling the differentiation of losses attributed to recombination and transport resistance. Our study provides valuable insights into strategies for mitigating FF losses based on the experimentally validated analytical model, guiding the development of more efficient solar cell designs and optimisation strategies., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

We present the development of multifunctional blue-emission organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using TADF-exciplex materials. These OLEDs exhibit sensitivity to external stimuli and achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 11.6 % through partly liquid processing. This technique allows for large-scale production on arbitrary geometries. The potential multifunctionality of the devices arises from their response to low external magnetic fields (up to 100 mT) with an efficiency up to 2.5 % for magnetoconductance, while maximum magneto-electroluminescence effects of 4.1 % were detected. We investigated novel aspects, including the utilization of two organic materials without further doping and the investigation of the impact of 2,2',2''-(1,3,5-Benzinetriyl)-tris(1phenyl-1-H-benzimidazole) (TPBi) processing in liquid and vapor form. The insights gained provide a fundamental understanding regarding the applicability of exciplex (EX) materials for fully solution-processed OLEDs through a deliberate omission of doping. Charge carrier mobility and recombination determine the performance of many opto-electronic devices such as solar cells, sensors and light-emitting diodes. Understanding how these parameters change as a function of material choice, charge carrier density and device geometry is essential for developing the next generation of devices. The Time-Delayed-Collection-Field technique (TDCF) is becoming a widely used method to measure both recombination and carrier transport with values derived from this method being widely reported for many material systems. However, most novel materials are highly disordered with a high density of trap states and standard TDCF-theory neglects the influence of these states. In this work we examine how reliable TDCF can be as a measurement technique when the device contains significant energetic disorder. We identify regimes where the results can be relied upon and where the results should be taken with more caution. Finally, we provide simple and easy to use experimental tests to help the experimentalist decide if the physical processes are dominated by trap states.

Over the last two decades the organic solar cell community has synthesised tens of thousands of novel polymers and small molecules in the search for an optimum light harvesting material. These materials were often crudely evaluated simply by measuring the current voltage curves in the light to obtain power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). Materials with low PCEs were quickly disregarded in the search for higher efficiencies. More complex measurements such as frequency/time domain characterisation that could explain why the material performed as it did were often not performed as they were too time consuming/complex. This limited feedback forced the field to advance using a more or less random walk of material development and has significantly slowed progress. Herein, we present a simple technique based on machine learning that can quickly and accurately extract recombination time constants and charge carrier mobilities as a function of light intensity simply from light/dark JV curves alone. This technique reduces the time to fully analyse a working cell from weeks to seconds and opens up the possibility of not only fully characterising new devices as they are fabricated, but also data mining historical data sets for promising materials the community has over looked., Comment: 10 figures, 30 pages

The density of states (DOS) is fundamentally important for understanding physical processes in organic disordered semiconductors, yet hard to determine experimentally. We evaluated the DOS by considering recombination via tail states and using the temperature and open-circuit voltage ($V_\mathrm{oc}$) dependence of the ideality factor in organic solar cells. By performing Suns-$V_\mathrm{oc}$ measurements, we find that gaussian and exponential distributions describe the DOS only at a given quasi-Fermi level splitting. The DOS width increases linearly with the DOS depth, revealing the power-law DOS in these materials., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Nuclear Astrophysics is a field at the intersection of nuclear physics and astrophysics, which seeks to understand the nuclear engines of astronomical objects and the origin of the chemical elements. This white paper summarizes progress and status of the field, the new open questions that have emerged, and the tremendous scientific opportunities that have opened up with major advances in capabilities across an ever growing number of disciplines and subfields that need to be integrated. We take a holistic view of the field discussing the unique challenges and opportunities in nuclear astrophysics in regards to science, diversity, education, and the interdisciplinarity and breadth of the field. The Cahn--Hilliard equations are a versatile model for describing the evolution of complex morphologies. In this paper we present a computational pipeline for the numerical solution of a ternary phase-field model for describing the nanomorphology of donor--acceptor semiconductor blends used in organic photovoltaic devices. The model consists of two coupled fourth-order partial differential equations that are discretized using a finite element approach. In order to solve the resulting large-scale linear systems efficiently, we propose a preconditioning strategy that is based on efficient approximations of the Schur-complement of a saddle point system. We show that this approach performs robustly with respect to variations in the discretization parameters. Finally, we outline that the computed morphologies can be used for the computation of charge generation, recombination, and transport in organic solar cells.

Stability is one of the most important challenges facing organic solar cells (OSC) on their path to commercialization. In the high-performance material system PM6:Y6 studied here, investigate degradation mechanisms of inverted photovoltaic devices. We have identified two distinct degradation pathways: one requires presence of both illumination and oxygen and features a short-circuit current reduction, the other one is induced thermally and marked by severe losses of open-circuit voltage and fill factor. We focus our investigation on the thermally accelerated degradation. Our findings show that bulk material properties and interfaces remain remarkably stable, however, aging-induced defect state formation in the active layer remains the primary cause of thermal degradation. The increased trap density leads to higher non-radiative recombination, which limits open-circuit voltage and lowers charge carrier mobility in the photoactive layer. Furthermore, we find the trap-induced transport resistance to be the major reason for the drop in fill factor. Our results suggest that device lifetimes could be significantly increased by marginally suppressing trap formation, leading to a bright future for OSC.

The SEparator for CApture Reactions (SECAR) is a next-generation recoil separator system at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) designed for the direct measurement of capture reactions on unstable nuclei in inverse kinematics. To maximize the performance of this system, stringent requirements on the beam alignment to the central beam axis and on the ion-optical settings need to be achieved. These can be difficult to attain through manual tuning by human operators without potentially leaving the system in a sub-optimal and irreproducible state. In this work, we present the first development of online Bayesian optimization with a Gaussian process model to tune an ion beam through a nuclear astrophysics recoil separator. We show that this method achieves small incoming angular deviations (\textless 1 mrad) in an efficient and reproducible manner that is at least three times faster than standard hand-tuning. Additionally, we present a Bayesian method for experimental optimization of the ion optics, and show that it validates the nominal theoretical ion-optical settings of the device, and improves the mass separation by 32\% for some beams.

Type-Ia supernovae (SN Ia) are powerful stellar explosions that provide important distance indicators in cosmology. There is significant tension between values of the Hubble constant (expansion rate of the universe) determined from SN Ia and from other data. Recently, we proposed a new SN Ia mechanism that involves a nuclear fission chain reaction in an isolated white dwarf [PRL 126, 1311010]. We find the average mass of an exploding star decreases with increasing enrichment f_5 -- the fraction of uranium that is the isotope U-235. As a result, the average SN Ia luminosity decreases with increasing f_5. Furthermore, f_5 is likely higher in the host galaxies of SN Ia observed at large redshift $z$ because of younger galaxy ages. This change of f_5 leads to the evolution of SN Ia properties with redshift. In organic solar cells, photogenerated singlet excitons form charge transfer (CT) complexes, which subsequently split into free charge carriers. Here, we consider the contributions of excess energy and molecular quadrupole moments to the charge separation process. We investigate charge photogeneration in two separate bulk heterojunction systems consisting of the polymer donor PTB7-Th and two non-fullerene acceptors, ITIC and h-ITIC. CT state dissociation in these donor-acceptor systems is monitored by charge density decay dynamics obtained from transient absorption experiments. We study the electric field dependence of charge carrier generation at different excitation energies by time delayed collection field (TDCF) and sensitive steady-state photocurrent measurements. Upon excitation below the optical gap free charge carrier generation becomes less field dependent with increasing photon energy, which challenges the view of charge photogeneration proceeding through energetically lowest CT states. We determine the average distance between electron-hole pairs at the donor-acceptor interface from empirical fits to the TDCF data. The delocalisation of CT states is larger in PTB7-Th:ITIC, the system with larger molecular quadrupole moment, indicating the sizeable effect of the electrostatic potential at the donor-acceptor interface on the dissociation of CT complexes., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Type-Ia supernovae (SN Ia) are powerful stellar explosions that provide important distance indicators in cosmology. Recently, we proposed a new SN Ia mechanism that involves a nuclear fission chain-reaction in an isolated white dwarf [PRL 126, 1311010]. Here we perform novel reaction network simulations of the actinide-rich first solids in a cooling white dwarf. The network includes neutron-capture and fission reactions on a range of U and Th isotopes with various possible values for U-235 enrichment. We find, for modest U-235 enrichments, neutron-capture on U-238 and Th-232 can breed additional fissile nuclei so that a significant fraction of all U and Th nuclei may fission during the chain-reaction. A combination of transient photovoltage (TPV), voltage dependent charge extraction (CE) and time delayed collection field (TDCF) measurements is applied to poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl] [3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl] thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PTB7):[6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid (PC$_{71}$BM) bulk heterojunction solar cells to analyze the limitations of photovoltaic performance. Devices are processed from pure chlorobenzene (CB) solution and a subset was optimized with 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) as co-solvent. The dramatic changes in device performance are discussed with respect to the dominating loss processes. While in the devices processed from CB solution, severe geminate and nongeminate recombination is observed, the use of DIO facilitates efficient polaron pair dissociation and minimizes geminate recombination. Thus, from the determined charge carrier decay rate under open circuit conditions and the voltage dependent charge carrier densities $n(V)$, the nongeminate loss current $j_{loss}$ of the samples with DIO alone enables us to reconstruct the current/voltage ($j/V$) characteristics across the whole operational voltage range. Geminate and nongeminate losses are considered to describe the $j/V$ response of cells prepared without additive, but lead to a clearly overestimated device performance. We attribute the deviation between measured and reconstructed $j/V$ characteristics to trapped charges in isolated domains of pure fullerene phases., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We investigate nongeminate recombination in organic solar cells based on copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) and C$_{60}$. Two device architectures, the planar heterojunction (PHJ) and the bulk heterojunction (BHJ), are directly compared in view of differences in charge carrier decay dynamics. We apply a combination of transient photovoltage (TPV) experiments, yielding the small perturbation charge carrier lifetime, and charge extraction measurements, providing the charge carrier density. In organic solar cells, charge photogeneration and recombination primarily occur at the donor--acceptor heterointerface. Whereas the BHJ can often be approximated by an effective medium due to rather small scale phase separation, the PHJ has a well defined two-dimensional heterointerface. To study recombination dynamics in PHJ devices most relevant is the charge accumulation at this interface. As from extraction techniques only the spatially averaged carrier concentration can be determined, we derive the charge carrier density at the interface $n_{int}$ from the open circuit voltage. Comparing the experimental results with macroscopic device simulation we discuss the differences of recombination and charge carrier densities in CuPc:C$_{60}$ PHJ and BHJ devices with respect to the device performance. The open circuit voltage of BHJ is larger than for PHJ at low light intensities, but at 0.3 sun the situation is reversed: here, the PHJ can finally take advantage of its generally longer charge carrier lifetimes, as the active recombination region is smaller., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Searches for continuous gravitational waves from \textit{unknown} Galactic neutron stars provide limits on the shapes of neutron stars. A rotating neutron star will produce gravitational waves if asymmetric deformations exist in its structure that are characterized by the star's ellipticity. In this study, we use a simple model of the spatial and spin distribution of Galactic neutron stars to estimate the total number of neutron stars probed, using gravitational waves, to a given upper limit on the ellipticity. This may help optimize future searches with improved sensitivity. The energetic landscape of charge transfer (CT) states at the interface of electron donating and electron accepting domains in organic optoelectronic devices is crucial for their performance. Central questions -- such as the role of static energetic disorder and vibrational effects -- are under ongoing dispute. This study provides an in-depth analysis of temperature dependent broadening of the spectroscopic absorption and emission features of CT states in devices with small molecule-fullerene blends. We confirm the validity of the electro-optical reciprocity relation between the photovoltaic external quantum efficiency ($\mathrm{EQE_{PV}}$) and electroluminescence ($\mathrm{EQE_{EL}}$), enabling us to validate the device temperature during the experiment. The validated temperature allows us to fit our experimental data with several models, and compare extracted CT state energies with the corresponding open circuit voltage limit at $0\mathrm{\,K}$. Fundamental electronic processes such as charge-carrier transport and recombination play a critical role in determining the efficiency of hybrid perovskite solar cells. The presence of mobile ions complicates the development of a clear understanding of these processes as the ions may introduce exceptional phenomena such as hysteresis or giant dielectric constants. As a result, the electronic landscape, including its interaction with mobile ions, is difficult to access both experimentally and analytically. To address this challenge, we applied a series of small perturbation techniques including impedance spectroscopy (IS), intensity-modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and intensity-modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS) to planar $\mathrm{MAPbI_3}$ perovskite solar cells. Our measurements indicate that both electronic as well as ionic responses can be observed in all three methods and assigned by literature comparison. The results reveal that the dominant charge-carrier loss mechanism is surface recombination by limitation of the quasi-Fermi level splitting. The interaction between mobile ions and the electronic charge carriers leads to a shift of the apparent diode ideality factor from 0.74 to 1.64 for increasing illumination intensity, despite the recombination mechanism remaining unchanged.

Point defects in metal halide perovskites play a critical role in determining their properties and optoelectronic performance; however, many open questions remain unanswered. In this work, we apply impedance spectroscopy and deep-level transient spectroscopy to characterize the ionic defect landscape in methylammonium lead triiodide ($MAPbI_3$) perovskites in which defects were purposely introduced by fractionally changing the precursor stoichiometry. Our results highlight the profound influence of defects on the electronic landscape, exemplified by their impact on the device built-in potential, and consequently, the open-circuit voltage. Even low ion densities can have an impact on the electronic landscape when both cations and anions are considered as mobile. Moreover, we find that all measured ionic defects fulfil the Meyer--Neldel rule with a characteristic energy connected to the underlying ion hopping process. These findings support a general categorization of defects in halide perovskite compounds.

A systematic study of neutron-hole strength in the N = 81 nuclei 137Ba, 139Ce, 141Nd and 143Sm is reported. The single-neutron removal reactions (p,d) and (3He,4He) were measured at energies of 23 and 34 MeV, respectively. Spectroscopic factors were extracted from measured cross sections through a distorted-wave Born approximation analysis and centroids of single-particle strength have been established. The change in these centroid energies as a function of proton number have been compared to calculations of the monopole shift for the s1/2 and h11/2 orbitals, where the majority of the strength has been observed. Significant fragmentation of strength was observed for the d and g7/2 orbitals, particularly for the latter orbital which is deeply bound, with summed strengths that indicate a significant amount lies outside of the measured excitation energy range.

We analyze internal transition rates and the singlet-triplet energy gap of the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecule 3CzClIPN, which recently was introduced as an efficient photocatalyst. Distribution and origin of the non-monoexponential decays, which are commonly observed in TADF films, are revealed by analysis of transient fluorescence with an inverse Laplace transform. A numerically robust global rate fit routine, which extracts all relevant TADF parameters by modeling the complete set of data, is introduced. To compare and verify the results, all methods are also applied to the well-known 4CzIPN. The influence of the molecular matrix is discussed by embedding low concentrations of TADF molecules in polystyrene films. Finally, quantum chemical calculations are compared to the experimental results to demonstrate that the chlorine atom increases the charge transfer character of the relevant states, resulting in a reduction of the singlet-triplet energy gap.

Perovskite semiconductors have demonstrated outstanding external luminescence quantum yields, enabling high power conversion efficiencies (PCE). However, the precise conditions to advance to an efficiency regime above monocrystalline silicon cells are not well understood. Here, we establish a simulation model that well describes efficient p-i-n type perovskite solar cells and a range of different experiments. We then study important device and material parameters and we find that an efficiency regime of 30% can be unlocked by optimizing the built-in potential across the perovskite layer by using either highly doped (10^19 cm-3), thick transport layers (TLs) or ultrathin undoped TLs, e.g. self-assembled monolayers. Importantly, we only consider parameters that have been already demonstrated in recent literature, that is a bulk lifetime of 10 us, interfacial recombination velocities of 10 cm/s, a perovskite bandgap of 1.5 eV and an EQE of 95%. A maximum efficiency of 31% is predicted for a bandgap of 1.4 eV. Finally, we demonstrate that the relatively high mobile ion density does not represent a significant barrier to reach this efficiency regime. Thus, the results of this paper promise continuous PCE improvements until perovskites may become the most efficient single-junction solar cell technology in the near future.

One of the key challenges for future development of efficient and stable metal halide perovskite solar cells is related to the migration of ions in these materials. Mobile ions have been linked to the observation of hysteresis in the current--voltage characteristics, shown to reduce device stability against degradation and act as recombination centers within the band gap of the active layer. In the literature one finds a broad spread of reported ionic defect parameters (e.g. activation energies) for seemingly similar perovskite materials, rendering the identification of the nature of these species difficult. In this work, we performed temperature dependent deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements on methylammonium lead iodide perovskite solar cells and developed a extended regularization algorithm for inverting the Laplace transform. Our results indicate that mobile ions form a distribution of emission rates (i.e. a distribution of diffusion constants) for each observed ionic species, which may be responsible for the differences in the previously reported defect parameters. Importantly, different DLTS modes such as optical and current DLTS yield the same defect distributions. Finally the comparison of our results with conventional boxcar DLTS and impedance spectroscopy (IS) verifies our evaluation algorithm.

We measured carbon abundances and the $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratio in 31 giant branch stars with previous CN and CH band measurements that span -2.33 $<$ M$_{\rm V}$ $<$ 0.18 in the globular cluster M10 (NGC 6254). Abundances were determined by comparing CO features at $\sim 2.3\, \mu \mathrm{m}$ and specifically the $^{13}$CO bandhead at $2.37\, \mu \mathrm{m}$, to synthetic spectra generated with MOOG. The observed spectra were obtained with GNIRS on Gemini North with a resolution of R $\approx 3500$. The carbon abundances derived from the IR spectra agree with previous [C/Fe] measurements found using CN and CH features at the near-UV/blue wavelength range. We found an average carbon isotope ratio of $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ = 5.10$_{-0.17}^{+0.18}$ for first generation stars (CN-normal; 13 stars total) and $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ = 4.84$_{-0.22}^{+0.27}$ for second generation stars (CN-enhanced; 15 stars). We therefore find no statistically significant difference in $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratio between stars in either population for the observed magnitude range. Finally, we created models of the expected carbon, nitrogen, and $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ surface abundance evolution on the red giant branch due to thermohaline mixing using the MESA stellar evolution code. The efficiency of the thermohaline mixing must be increased to a factor of $\approx 60$ to match [C/Fe] abundances, and by a factor of $\approx 666$ to match $^{12}\mathrm{C}/^{13}\mathrm{C}$ ratios. Gamma-ray astronomy explores the most energetic photons in nature to address some of the most pressing puzzles in contemporary astrophysics. It encompasses a wide range of objects and phenomena: stars, supernovae, novae, neutron stars, stellar-mass black holes, nucleosynthesis, the interstellar medium, cosmic rays and relativistic-particle acceleration, and the evolution of galaxies. MeV gamma-rays provide a unique probe of nuclear processes in astronomy, directly measuring radioactive decay, nuclear de-excitation, and positron annihilation. The substantial information carried by gamma-ray photons allows us to see deeper into these objects, the bulk of the power is often emitted at gamma-ray energies, and radioactivity provides a natural physical clock that adds unique information. New science will be driven by time-domain population studies at gamma-ray energies. This science is enabled by next-generation gamma-ray instruments with one to two orders of magnitude better sensitivity, larger sky coverage, and faster cadence than all previous gamma-ray instruments. This transformative capability permits: (a) the accurate identification of the gamma-ray emitting objects and correlations with observations taken at other wavelengths and with other messengers; (b) construction of new gamma-ray maps of the Milky Way and other nearby galaxies where extended regions are distinguished from point sources; and (c) considerable serendipitous science of scarce events -- nearby neutron star mergers, for example. The astrophysical $S$-factor for the radiative proton capture reaction on $^7$Be ($S_{17}$) at low energies is affected by the $s$-wave scattering lengths. We report the measurement of elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections for the $^7$Be+p system in the center-of-mass energy range 0.474 - 2.740 MeV and center-of-mass angular range of 70$^\circ$- 150$^\circ$. A radioactive $^7$Be beam produced at Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility was accelerated and bombarded a thin polypropylene (CH$_{2}$)$_\text n$ target. Scattered ions were detected in the segmented Silicon Detector Array. Using an $\textit{R}$-matrix analysis of ORNL and Louvain-la-Neuve cross section data, the $s$-wave scattering lengths for channel spins 1 and 2 were determined to be 17.34$^{+1.11}_{-1.33}$ and -3.18$^{+0.55}_{-0.50}$ fm, respectively. The uncertainty in the $s$-wave scattering lengths reported in this work is smaller by a factor of 5-8 compared to the previous measurement, which may reduce the overall uncertainty in $S_{17}$ at zero energy. The level structure of $^8$B is discussed based upon the results from this work. Evidence for the existence of 0$^+$ and 2$^+$ levels in $^8$B at 1.9 and 2.21 MeV, respectively, is observed.

Copolymers such as PCDTBT (poly(N-9'-heptadecanyl-2,7-carbazole-alt-5,5-(4',7'-di-2-thienyl- 2',1',3'-benzothiadiazole))) are commonly employed as donor material in bulk heterojunction solar cells. Recently, chemical defects such as homocouplings have been shown to form at the material synthesis stage, strongly reducing the short circuit current in organic photovoltaics. Here we show that both, low molecular weight and homocoupling defects reduce the short circuit current of solar cells because of limited exciton diffusion. We propose a model that unites and explains the influence of both chemical parameters with the distribution of conjugation lengths. The connection between limited exciton diffusion and short circuit current is revealed by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation of bulk heterojunctions. Our findings are likely applicable for copolymers in general.

Now 50 years since the existence of the neutron star crust was proposed, we review the current understanding of the nuclear physics of the outer layers of accreting neutron stars. Nuclei produced during nuclear burning replace the nascent composition of the neutron star ocean and crust. Non-equilibrium nuclear reactions driven by compression alter the outer thermal structure and chemical composition, leaving observable imprints on astronomical phenomena. As observations of bursting neutron stars and cooling neutron stars have increased, the recent volume of astronomical data allows new insights into the microphysics of the neutron star interior and the possibility to test nuclear physics input in model calculations. Despite numerous advances in our understanding of neutron star interiors and observed neutron star phenomena, many challenges remain in the astrophysics theory of accreting neutron stars, the nuclear theory of neutron-rich nuclei, and the reach and precision of terrestrial nuclear physics experiments., Comment: Invited review to appear in Journal of Physics G (70 pages)

We report on time dependent Stokes shift measurements of single molecules. Broadband excitation and emission spectroscopy were applied to study the temporal Stokes shift evolution of single perylene diimide molecules (PDI) embedded in a polymer matrix on the time scale of seconds. The Stokes shift varied between individual molecules as well as for single molecules undergoing different conformations and geometries. From the distribution and temporal evolution of Stokes shifts, we unravel the interplay of nano-environment and molecular conformation. We found that Stokes shift fluctuations are related to simultaneous and unidirectional shifts of both emission and excitation spectra.

X-ray observations of transiently accreting neutron stars during quiescence provide information about the structure of neutron star crusts and the properties of dense matter. Interpretation of the observational data requires an understanding of the nuclear reactions that heat and cool the crust during accretion, and define its nonequilibrium composition. We identify here in detail the typical nuclear reaction sequences down to a depth in the inner crust where the mass density is 2E12 g/cm^3 using a full nuclear reaction network for a range of initial compositions. The reaction sequences differ substantially from previous work. We find a robust reduction of crust impurity at the transition to the inner crust regardless of initial composition, though shell effects can delay the formation of a pure crust somewhat to densities beyond 2E12 g/cm^3. This naturally explains the small inner crust impurity inferred from observations of a broad range of systems. The exception are initial compositions with A >= 102 nuclei, where the inner crust remains impure with an impurity parameter of Qimp~20 due to the N = 82 shell closure. In agreement with previous work we find that nuclear heating is relatively robust and independent of initial composition, while cooling via nuclear Urca cycles in the outer crust depends strongly on initial composition. This work forms a basis for future studies of the sensitivity of crust models to nuclear physics and provides profiles of composition for realistic crust models., Comment: 25 Pages, accepted for publication in Ap. A beam containing a substantial component of both the $J^{\pi}=5^+$, $T_{1/2}=162$ ns isomeric state of $^{18}$F and its $1^+$, 109.77-min ground state has been utilized to study members of the ground-state rotational band in $^{19}$F through the neutron transfer reaction $(d$,$p)$ in inverse kinematics. The resulting spectroscopic strengths confirm the single-particle nature of the 13/2$^+$ band-terminating state. The agreement between shell-model calculations, using an interaction constructed within the $sd$ shell, and our experimental results reinforces the idea of a single-particle/collective duality in the descriptions of the structure of atomic nuclei.
