An evaluation of low damage guar gum fracturing fluid system based on deep coalbed methane reservoir stimulation was carried out, its on-site application research was conducted. The results indicate that the gel breaking time decreases with increasing temperature. Low damage guar gum fracturing fluid has a significant breaking expression in a short period of time at temperature above 40 ℃, which is not obvious at 20 ℃ and 30 ℃. The permeability of coal core is sensitive to temperature, which leads to an increase in core damage rate, but the amplitude of change is relatively small. For low damage guar gum fracturing fluid, the increase rate of temperature sensitivity of coal core to damage rate is much lower than the decrease rate of guar gum fracturing fluid damage rate to coal core with the increasing temperature from 20 ℃ to 40 ℃. Overall, the damage rate of guar gum fracturing fluid to coal core significantly decreases with the increase of temperature. For active water, the damage rate of active water to coal core increases when the temperature rises from 20 ℃ to 40 ℃. The backflow fluid viscosity reaches 5 mPa·s of guar gum fracturing in 2 hours at temperatures above 40 ℃, meeting the needs of on-site construction. By comparing the fracturing results of low damage guar gum fracturing and active water in the same well and horizontal well at the same layer, low damage guar gum fracturing fluid can achieve a fracturing process with less injection volume, larger sand volume, higher sand ratio, and smoother pressure.

Abstract Chiral inorganic semiconductors with high dissymmetric factor are highly desirable, but it is generally difficult to induce chiral structure in inorganic semiconductors because of their structure rigidity and symmetry. In this study, we introduced chiral ZnO film as hard template to transfer chirality to CsPbBr3 film and PbS quantum dots (QDs) for circularly polarized light (CPL) emission and detection, respectively. The prepared CsPbBr3/ZnO thin film exhibited CPL emission at 520 nm and the PbS QDs/ZnO film realized CPL detection at 780 nm, featuring high dissymmetric factor up to around 0.4. The electron transition based mechanism is responsible for chirality transfer. Graphical Abstract

ABSTRACTInverting grassland above-ground biomass (AGB) presents a significant challenge due to difficulties in characterizing leaf physiological states and obtaining accurate ground-truth data. This study introduces an innovative hybrid model for AGB inversion based on the AGB = leaf mass per area (LMA) * leaf area index (LAI) paradigmn in the Ewenki Banner region of Inner Mongolia. The model integrates the PROSAIL radiative transfer model, machine learning regression, LEnKF data assimilation theory, multisource remote sensing, and meteorological data, following a four-step approach. Firstly, we establish LAI and LMA inversion models by combining the PROSAIL model with machine learning techniques. Secondly, data assimilation fuses the PROSAIL-derived LAI with MODIS-LAI. In the third phase, a Random Forest predictive model is developed for LMA estimation. Lastly, the accuracy of the hybrid model is assessed using empirical data. Precision evaluation with ground-truth samples demonstrates that the assimilated LAI and RF-predicted LMA yield the lowest prediction error for grassland AGB (RMSE = 0.0033 g/cm2; MAE = 0.0028 g/cm2). This model framework addresses the challenge of limited prior knowledge in the PROSAIL-AGB prediction model, thereby enhancing the prediction accuracy while maintaining its key advantages: providing continuous observations at high spatiotemporal resolutions without relying on measured sample data.

As a core task in 3D scene information extraction, point cloud semantic segmentation is crucial for understanding 3D scenes and environmental perception. While extracting local geometric structural features from point clouds, existing research often overlooks the long-range dependencies present in the scene, making it challenging to fully uncover the long-range contextual features hidden within point clouds. On this basis, we propose a segmentation algorithm (DG-Net) that integrates dual neighborhood features with global spatial-aware. Initially, the local structure information encoding module is designed to learn about local geometric shapes by encoding spatial position and directional features, thus supplementing structural information. Subsequently, a dual neighborhood features complementary module is introduced to merge the geometric structural and semantic features within local neighborhoods, learning local dependencies and capturing distinguishable local contextual features. Finally, these features are relayed to a global spatial-aware module equipped with a gated unit, which dynamically adjusts the weights of features at different stages, effectively modeling long-range dependencies between local structures and finely extracting long-range contextual features. We conducted experiments on benchmark datasets of point cloud scenes, and both quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that our algorithm can accurately identify small-scale objects with complex geometric structures within scenes, surpassing other mainstream networks in segmentation performance. The mIoU on the S3DIS, Toronto3D, and SensatUrban datasets are 71.9 %, 82.1 %, and 59.8 %, respectively.

Nitrogen addition alters soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) accumulation in forest ecosystems, but the responses of SOC and TN sequestration rates and dynamics to nitrogen addition in forest ecosystems worldwide remain unclear. This study conducted a global analysis to evaluate the effects of the nitrogen application rate, nitrogen addition duration (time), and humidity on the SOC and TN accumulation rates from 257 data points (63 articles). Nitrogen addition increased SOC and TN by 4.48% and 10.18%, respectively. The SOC and TN accumulation rates were 0.65 and 0.11 g kg−1 yr−1, respectively. Moreover, the percentage changes of SOC and TN overall increased with the nitrogen application rate and duration of nitrogen addition; however, the accumulation rates of SOC and TN overall decreased with the nitrogen application rate and the duration of nitrogen addition. In addition, the percentage changes and change rates of SOC and TN increased overall with the humidity index. In conclusion, nitrogen addition promoted SOC and TN accumulation in forest soil, and the nitrogen application rate and nitrogen addition duration increased the percentage changes in SOC and TN; however, they decreased the accumulation rate, whereas humidity increased the accumulation rates of SOC and TN. These results enhance our understanding of soil carbon and nitrogen cycling in forest soils in the context of global nitrogen deposition.

Subalpine forests provide crucial ecosystem services and are increasingly threatened by human alterations like bare-cut slopes from highway construction. External soil spray seeding (ESSS) is often employed to restore these slopes, but the cement it introduces can negatively affect soil fungi, which are vital for the ecological sustainability of restored slopes. Despite previous extensive discussions about ESSS-restored slopes, fungal dynamics and their underlying ecological mechanisms during ESSS-based restorations still remain elusive. Here, we conducted a 196-day simulation experiment using natural soils from a subalpine forest ecosystem. By using nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing, we revealed soil fungal dynamics and their ecological mechanisms during simulated ESSS-based restorations. Results showed a decline in fungal α-diversity and significant shifts in community structures from the initial day to day 46, followed by relative stabilities. These dynamics were mainly characterized by ectomycorrhizal, plant pathogenic, and saprotrophic fungi, with ectomycorrhizal fungi being depleted, while saprotrophic and pathogenic fungi showed enrichment over time. Shifts in nitrate nitrogen (NO3−−N) content primarily regulated these dynamics via mediating homogeneous selections. High NO3−−N levels at later stages (days 46 to 196, especially day 46) might exclude those poorly adapted fungal species, resulting in great diversity loss and community shifts. Despite reduced homogeneous selections and NO3−−N levels after day 46, fungal communities did not show a recovery but continued to undergo changes compared to their initial states, suggesting the less resilient of fungi during ESSS-based restorations. This study highlights the need to manage soil NO3−−N levels for fungal communities during ESSS-based restorations. It provides novel insights for maintaining the ecological sustainability of ESSS-restored slopes and seeking new restoration strategies for cut slopes caused by infrastructure in subalpine forests.

Ecological stoichiometry is essential for investigating biogeochemical cycling in an ecosystem. Thinning, a management practice that closely mimics natural processes, significantly influences stand structure and microclimate, thereby affecting nutrient cycling. Nonetheless, seasonal variations in ecological stoichiometry across the leaf-litter-soil continuum under different thinning regimes remain inadequately understood. In this study, we evaluated three thinning methods (strip filling (SF), ecological thinning (ET), and forest gap (FG)) to investigate the stoichiometric characteristics of Cupressus funebris Endl (C. funebris). within the leaf-litter-soil system in Southwest China. The samples were collected during four distinct seasonal periods: early dry season (January–March, EDS), late dry season (April–June, LDS), early wet season (July–September, EWS), and late wet season (October–December, LWS). The results indicated that the (1) carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents and C:N:P ratio in leaves, litter, and soils varied widely and were strongly influenced by thinning method and season. (2) In the EDS, the soil TP content significantly decreased by 36.9% (p < 0.05), 41.67% (p < 0.05), and 17.9% (p < 0.05) under ET, FG, and SF treatments compared to the pure C. funebris forest (PC). (3) Compared to the PC, the leaf organic C content under ET significantly increased by 6.6% (EDS, p < 0.05), 8.4% (EWS, p < 0.05), 24.8% (LDS, p < 0.05), and 11.5% (EWS, p < 0.05). (4) Under identical thinning methods, the contents of litter C, litter N, litter P, leaf N, and leaf P (excluding litter C in SF) were found to be highest in the LWS. Conversely, the ratios of litter C:N, litter C:P, litter N:P, leaf C:N, leaf C:P, leaf N:P, soil N:P, and soil C:P (except for the ratios of litter N:P in ET and FG) were observed to be lowest in the LWS. (5) Season and thinning method significantly affected the internal stability of P stoichiometric homeostasis, and litter P under ET (EWS) was categorized as “plastic” (p < 0.1, 0.75 < H). (6) The results of the structural equation model show that the thinning method has a direct positive impact on leaf C, N, and P contents and a direct negative impact on the chemical stoichiometry of leaves and soil. Season has a direct positive impact on soil C, N, and P contents, as well as on the chemical stoichiometry of litter and leaves; however, they have a direct negative impact on leaf C, N, and P contents. This study contributes to C. funebris plantation management and provides basic information for global stoichiometric analysis.

Canopy gaps can result in abiotic heterogeneities and diverse niches from gap borders to centers, potentially affecting fine root decompositions mediated by soil fungal communities. Despite extensive discussions on the relationship between soil fungi and fine root decomposition, the mechanism by which gap locations regulate fine root decomposition through the soil fungal community remains elusive. Here, we conducted an in situ field decomposition experiment of Chinese Toon (Toona sinensis) fine roots in a low-efficiency weeping cypress (Cupressus funebris) plantation forest across three microhabitats: gap centers, gap borders, and closed canopy areas. Soil fungal communities were determined using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing after two years of field incubation. Results showed that soil properties and nutrient content in residual roots varied across the three microhabitats, with the gap borders exhibiting the highest decomposition rates. While fungal α-diversity remained relatively consistent, taxonomic compositions differed significantly. Decomposition rates did not show significant correlations with soil properties, observed fungal ASVs, or overall community composition. However, they positively correlated with the relative abundance of saprotrophic Sordariomycetes, which in turn positively correlated with soil total nitrogen (with a highest correlation), peaking at the gap borders. Overall community variations were primarily driven by soil temperature and magnesium content in residual roots. Further analysis revealed high fungal community similarities and low dispersal limitations between the gap borders and closed canopy areas, with more phylogenetically clustered communities at the borders. These results demonstrate that the gap borders possess a high decomposition rate, likely due to the centralization of functions driven by soil fungi such as saprotrophs existing in the “microbial seed bank” or migrating from closed canopy areas. These findings highlight the key role of soil fungi, especially saprotrophic fungi, in fine root decomposition at the gap borders, stressing the importance of soil fungi-driven mechanisms in nutrient cycling, and also informing sustainable forest management practices.

Abstract Stacking of monolayer 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) into van der Waals heterostructures can enable the formation of interlayer excitons (IXs) with long lifetimes and permanent out‐of‐plane electric dipoles, allowing them to propagate over long distances. While early studies on TMD heterobilayrs show efficient electrical control of excitonic transport of IXs by creating different energy potentials, the electrically controllable exciton states and associated spatial migration remain elusive. Here, an electrical control of exciton diffusion through the change of exciton states between charged IXs (CIXs) and charged intralayer excitons is reported. The repulsive dipolar interaction of IXs accounts for the growing exciton cloud size and increasing diffusion length in the power‐dependent PL study. More importantly, the electrically tunable spatial exciton distribution is demonstrated by switching the exciton states, which shows a 1.5‐fold change in diffusion length and an order of magnitude increase in lifetime from charged intralayer excitons to CIXs. The electrical control of exciton states and the relevant diffusion dynamics provide another knob to study the interplay between propagation and many‐body interactions for the development of excitonic devices.

The declining availability of natural sand resources and the significant carbon footprint associated with the extensive use of cement are posing severe limitations on the advancement and application of ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). In this study, waste tyre-derived recycled crumb rubber particles (CR) were employed to replace quartz sand, and an alkali-activated cementitious material was used to produce waste tyre-alkali-activated UHPC (T-UHPAC). The influence of different CR replacement ratios (0%, 5%, 20%, 35%, 50%) on the tensile and flexural performance of T-UHPAC was investigated, and a predictive model for the stress–strain response considering the CR replacement ratio was established. An optimization method for improving the tensile and flexural performance of T-UHPAC was proposed. The results indicate that the effect of rough-surfaced CR on the interfacial properties of concrete differs from that of smooth quartz sand. A CR replacement ratio exceeding 35% led to a reduction in both the tensile and flexural strengths of UHPAC, while a replacement ratio at or below 20% resulted in a superior tensile and flexural performance of T-UHPAC. The established predictive model for tensile performance accurately forecasts the stress–strain behaviour of T-UHPAC under varying CR replacement ratios, with the accuracy improving as the CR replacement ratio increases. By utilizing CR to replace quartz sand in proportions not exceeding 20%, the production of low-carbon UHPC with exceptional comprehensive mechanical properties is achievable. Moreover, the development of T-UHPAC through the comprehensive utilization of waste tyres presents a promising and innovative approach for the low-carbon and cost-effective production of UHPC, thereby facilitating the sustainable development of natural resources. This research represents a significant step towards the widespread adoption and application of UHPC and thus holds substantial importance.

Abundant and rare bacteria exhibit unequal responses to environmental changes and disturbances, potentially resulting in differential contributions to the altitudinal characteristics of total community in natural and disturbed soils. Although the altitude patterns of soil bacteria have been widely studied, it remains unclear whether these patterns are consistent among bacteria with varying predominance levels, and which subpopulation contributes more to maintaining these patterns in natural and disturbed subalpine forest soils. In this study, we collected 18 natural subalpine forest soil samples and 18 disturbed ones from three altitudes (2900 m a.s.l., 3102 m a.s.l., and 3194 m a.s.l.) along the Wenma highway in Miyaluo, Lixian, Sichuan, Southwest China. By partitioning total bacterial communities based on species predominance, we found that bacteria with higher predominance levels tended to exhibit altitude patterns (α-diversity, community structure, and functional redundancy) similar to those of total bacteria in both natural and disturbed subalpine forest soils, although they only occupied a small portion of the community. Abundant bacteria might play critical roles in maintaining the regional ecological characteristics of total community across the altitude gradient, while the rare and hyper-rare ones might contribute more to local diversity and functional redundancy. In natural soils, the altitude patterns of α-diversity inferred from total, abundant, and rare bacteria were mainly shaped by NO3−-N, while soil conductivity mainly drove the altitude patterns of α-diversity inferred from hyper-rare bacteria. Additionally, the community structures of total, abundant, rare, and hyper-rare bacteria were mainly shaped by NO3−-N, while the altitude patterns of functional redundancy inferred from total, abundant, and rare bacteria were mainly shaped by soil conductivity in natural soils. In disturbed subalpine forest soils, the influences of NO3−-N for the altitude patterns of α-diversity and community structure, and those of soil conductivity for functional redundancy, were relatively weak in total, abundant, rare, and hyper-rare bacteria. This study examined the roles of bacteria with varying predominance levels in maintaining the altitude pattern of bacteria in both natural and disturbed subalpine forest soils, providing novel insights for devising strategies to conserve biodiversity and ecologically restore disturbed soils in subalpine ecosystems.

Soil fungi often operate through diverse functional guilds, and play critical roles in driving soil nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition and the health of above-ground vegetation. However, fungal functional guilds at the early-stage restoration of disrupted subalpine forest soils remain elusive. In the present study, we collected 36 soil samples along an altitudinal gradient (2900 m a.s.l., 3102 m a.s.l., and 3194 m a.s.l.) from cut slopes (CS) (from Wenma highway) and natural soils (NS) at the Miyaluo of Lixian County, Southwest China. By applying nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing, this study revealed the ecological characteristics of fungal functional guild in the early-stage restoration of cut slope soils. The results showed that the predicted prevalence of ectomycorrhizal fungi decreased, while plant pathogens and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increased in CS. In the high-altitude regions (3102 m a.s.l. and 3194 m a.s.l.), the differences in communities between natural and cut slope soils were more pronounced for total soil fungi, soil saprotroph, litter saprotroph, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and ectomycorrhizal fungi, in contrast to the low altitude communities (2900 m a.s.l.). An opposite pattern was evident for plant pathogens. Variations in the differences of both soil properties (mainly soil pH) and community assembling processes (e.g., heterogeneous selection, dispersal limitation and drift) between natural and cut slope soils across the altitudinal gradient likely shaped the shifting patterns of community difference. This study provides valuable insights for devising restoration approaches for cut slopes in subalpine forest ecosystems, emphasizing the importance of taking soil fungal functional guilds into account in evaluating the restoration of cut slopes, and underscoring the necessity for increased attention to the restoration of soil fungi in cut slopes at the high-altitude ecosystems.

The Inner Mongolia segment of the Yellow River basin (IMYRB) is a typical area for ecological restoration in China. At the end of the 20th century, influenced by climate and human activities, such as mining, grazing, and farmland abandonment, the ecological security of the IMYRB was under more significant pressure. To alleviate the pressure on natural ecosystems and improve the fragile ecological situation, China implemented the “Grain-for-Green” (GFG) project in 1999. However, the evolutionary characteristics of the ecological security of the IMYRB in the first two decades of the 21st century are still lacking. Quantitative and long-term ecological security information of “Grain-for-Green” is needed. Based on this, this study used the “Pressure (P)-State (S)-Response (R)” method and proposed an ecological security assessment and early warning system based on multi-source remote sensing data. The evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in ecological security in the IMYRB from 2000 to 2020. Compared to 2000, the ecological security of the IMYRB had improved significantly in 2020, with an increase of 11.02% (ES > 0.65) and a decrease of 8.89% (ES < 0.35). For the early warning aspect of ecological security, there was a 26.31% growth in non-warning areas, with a 5% decrease in warning areas. Based on the analysis of ecologically critical factors, we proposed the implications for future ecological management as follows. (1) In ecologically fragile areas such as the IMYRB, continued implementation of the GFG was necessary. (2) Vegetation restoration should be scientific and tailored adaptive. (3) The protection of arable land also showed necessity. (4) The grazing management skills should be upgraded. Our study demonstrated that the ecological benefits derived from the “GFG” project are not immediate but cumulative and persistent. The continuous implementation of “GFG” will likely alleviate the pressure exerted by human activities on the natural environment.

Mode multiplexers/demultiplexers (MUX/deMUX) are key components in mode division multiplexing. A silica waveguide mode MUX consisting of four cascaded directional couplers is experimentally demonstrated. The beam propagation method is used in the device design and optimization. Thermal oxidation, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, and ultraviolet photolithography are adopted in the silica waveguide mode MUX fabrication. The measurement results prove that the input E00 mode can be selectively converted to E10 mode, E20 mode, and E30 mode. Within the wavelength range of 1500 to 1620 nm, the insertion loss is less than 12.2 dB. The proposed mode MUX has good potential in on-chip MDM applications.

Abstract Long-lived interlayer excitons (IXs) in van der Waals heterostructures (HSs) stacked by monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) carry valley-polarized information and thus could find promising applications in valleytronic devices. Current manipulation approaches for valley polarization of IXs are mainly limited in electrical field/doping, magnetic field or twist-angle engineering. Here, we demonstrate an electrochemical-doping method, which is efficient, in-situ and nonvolatile. We find the emission characteristics of IXs in WS2/WSe2 HSs exhibit a large excitonic/valley-polarized hysteresis upon cyclic-voltage sweeping, which is ascribed to the chemical-doping of O2/H2O redox couple trapped between WSe2 and substrate. Taking advantage of the large hysteresis, a nonvolatile valley-addressable memory is successfully demonstrated. The valley-polarized information can be non-volatilely switched by electrical gating with retention time exceeding 60 min. These findings open up an avenue for nonvolatile valley-addressable memory and could stimulate more investigations on valleytronic devices.

Ongoing climate changes have a direct impact on forest growth; they also affect natural fire regimes, with further implications for forest composition. Understanding of how these will affect forests on decadal-to-centennial timescales is limited. Here we use reconstructions of past vegetation, fire regimes and climate during the Holocene to examine the relative importance of changes in climate and fire regimes for the abundance of key tree species in northeastern China. We reconstructed vegetation changes and fire regimes based on pollen and charcoal records from Gushantun peatland. We then used generalized linear modelling to investigate the impact of reconstructed changes in summer temperature, annual precipitation, background levels of fire, fire frequency and fire magnitude to identify the drivers of decadal-to-centennial changes in forest openness and composition. Changes in climate and fire regimes have independent impacts on the abundance of the key tree taxa. Climate variables are generally more important than fire variables in determining the abundance of individual taxa. Precipitation is the only determinant of forest openness, but summer temperature is more important than precipitation for individual tree taxa with warmer summers causing a decrease in cold-tolerant conifers and an increase in warmth-demanding broadleaved trees. Both background level and fire frequency have negative relationships with the abundance of most tree taxa; only Pinus increases as fire frequency increases. The magnitude of individual fires does not have a significant impact on species abundance on this timescale. Both climate and fire regime characteristics must be considered to understand changes in forest composition on the decadal-to-centennial timescale. There are differences, both in sign and magnitude, in the response of individual tree species to individual drivers.

Two-dimensional (2D)/quasi-2D organic-inorganic halide perovskites are regarded as naturally formed multiple quantum wells with inorganic layers isolated by long organic chains, which exhibit layered structure, large exciton binding energy, strong nonlinear optical effect, tunable bandgap via changing the layer number or chemical composition, improved environmental stability, and excellent optoelectronic properties. The extensive choice of long organic chains endows 2D/quasi-2D perovskites with tunable electron-phonon coupling strength, chirality, or ferroelectricity properties. In particular, the layered nature of 2D/quasi-2D perovskites allows us to exfoliate them to thin plates to integrate with other materials to form heterostructures, the fundamental structural units for optoelectronic devices, which would greatly extend the functionalities in view of the diversity of 2D/quasi-2D perovskites. In this paper, the recent achievements of 2D/quasi-2D perovskite-based heterostructures are reviewed. First, the structure and physical properties of 2D/quasi-2D perovskites are introduced. We then discuss the construction and characterizations of 2D/quasi-2D perovskite-based heterostructures and highlight the prominent optical properties of the constructed heterostructures. Further, the potential applications of 2D/quasi-2D perovskite-based heterostructures in photovoltaic devices, light emitting devices, photodetectors/phototransistors, and valleytronic devices are demonstrated. Finally, we summarize the current challenges and propose further research directions in the field of 2D/quasi-2D perovskite-based heterostructures.

Background Soil and understory vegetation are vital components of forest ecosystems. Identifying the interaction of plantation management to vegetation and soil is crucial for developing sustainable plantation ecosystem management strategies. As one of the main measures of close-to-nature management of forest plantation, few studies have paid attention to the effect of crop tree management on the soil properties and understory vegetation. Methods A 36-year-old Pinus massoniana plantation in Huaying city, Sichuan Province was taken as the research object to analyse the changes in undergrowth plant diversity and soil physicochemical properties under three different crop tree densities (100, 150, and 200 N/ha). Results Our results showed that the contents of available phosphorus, organic matter and hydrolysable nitrogen in the topsoil increased significantly after crop tree management, while content of available potassium decreased. The composition of shrub and herb layer was richer, and the dominant species were obviously replaced after crop tree management. The Shannon–Wiener index and Richness index of shrub layer, and the diversity of herb layer increased significantly after crop tree management. Herb layer diversity indexes and Richness index of shrub layer were closely related to soil organic matter, available phosphorus, hydrolysable nitrogen, available potassium, soil moisture and bulk density. As the main limiting factors for plant growth, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were closely related to plant diversity and to the distribution of the dominant species. At the initial stage of crop tree management, each treatment significantly improved the soil physicochemical properties and plant diversity of Pinus massoniana plantation, and the comprehensive evaluation was 200 N/ha >100 N/ha >150 N/ha >CK. Compared with other treatments, 200 N/ha had the best effect on improving the undergrowth environment of the Pinus massoniana plantation in the initial stage of crop tree management.

Abstract Background Accumulating evidence suggests that Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) may be involved in cancer occurrence and progression. However, the prognostic role of serum GGT in pancreatic cancer (PC) survival lacks adequate evaluation. In this study, we aimed to analyze the association between serum GGT measured at diagnosis and overall survival (OS) in patients with metastatic PC. Methods We identified 320 patients with histopathologically confirmed metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) diagnosed during 2015 and 2016 at a specialized cancer hospital in southwestern China. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional-hazards models were used to determine associations between serum GGT and OS in metastatic PDAC. Results Controlled for possible confounding factors, serum GGT was significantly associated with OS: serum GGT > 48 U/L yielded a hazard ratio of 1.53 (95% CI: 1.19–1.97) for mortality risk. A significant dose-response association between serum GGT and OS was also observed. Subgroup analysis showed a possible interaction between GGT and blood glucose level. Conclusion Serum GGT could be a potential indicator of survival in metastatic PDAC patients. Underlying mechanisms for this association should be investigated.

Abstract Nonlinear optics (NLO) of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is promising for the on‐chip photonic and optoelectronic applications. In this review, we will survey the current progress of NLO in TMDs. First, we will brief the basic theory of the NLO in TMDs. Second, several important nonlinear processes in TMDs such as harmonic generation, four‐wave mixing, saturable absorption, and two‐photon absorption will be presented and their potential applications are also discussed. Third, the main strategies to tune, modulate, and enhance the NLO in TMDs are reviewed, including the excitonic effect, symmetry modulation, optical cavity enhancement, valley selection, edge state, and material phase. Finally, we give an outlook regarding some important issues and directions of NLO in TMDs.

Abstract Background The prognostic role of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) has been found in several kinds of solid malignant tumor, but has never been extensively discussed in pancreatic cancer, especially through the application of dynamic survival model which incorporates the varying nature of ALP measurements. Methods We conducted a retrospective study which successfully collected 551 histopathologically confirmed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients from a cancer specialized hospital in southwest China. The association between variant ALP which measured during the whole survival period and the overall survival (OS) of PDAC patients was evaluated by using dynamic Anderson-Gill (AG) model. Exhaustive sensitivity analysis was performed by adopting continuous cut-offs of ALP. Results After adjusted for possible confounding of serum albumin, total bilirubin and leukocyte counts, AG model revealed that, serum ALP during the survival period was nonlinearly associated with the OS of PDAC: for resected patients, compared with those whose ALP results ranged within the first quartile (P75) quartiles were observed 1.14 (95% CI: 0.29–4.56), 3.93 (95% CI: 1.23–12.60), 3.87 (95% CI: 1.32–11.36) folds of death hazard; whereas in un-resected PDAC patients, the hazard ratios (HRs) were 1.15 (95% CI: 0.79–1.68), 1.92 (95% CI: 1.32–2.78), and 1.97 (95% CI: 1.30–2.98), respectively. Sensitivity analysis revealed that, for both resected and un-resected patients, the results of AG model were robust with regard to various cut-offs of ALP, and an increased ALP was in general associated with significantly increased hazard of death. Conclusion Serum ALP during the survival period was significantly associated with the OS of PDAC patients, especially for resected early stage PDAC patients. Future studies with expanded sample size and refined prospective design should be implemented to corroborate our major findings. Besides, the underlying mechanism for this possible hazardous role of ALP should also be investigated.

Filterless narrowband photodetectors are preferred in imaging applications as they save cost and space. Here Li et al. develop photodetectors with tunable spectral responsivities based on two-dimensional perovskites and the excellent performance can be attributed to the self-trapped states.

The nickel-base superalloy Hastelloy N was irradiated using 1 MeV Xe20+ and 7 MeV Xe26+ ions with displacement damage ranging from 0.5 dPa to 10 dPa at room temperature (RT). The irradiated Ni-based superalloy was characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), XRD, and nanoindenter to determine the changes in microstructural evolution and nanoindentation hardness. The TEM results showed that ion irradiation induced a large number of defects such as black spots and corrugated structures and the second phase was rapidly amorphized after being irradiated to a fluence of 0.5 dPa. The XRD results showed that the Hastelloy N alloy sample did not undergo lattice distortion after ion irradiation. An obvious irradiation hardening phenomenon was observed in this study, and the hardness increased with Xe ion fluence. The pinning effect in which the defects can become obstacles to the free movement of dislocation may be responsible for the irradiation-induced hardening.

Objective To investigate the epidemiological profile and associated outcomes of electrical injuries at a major burn centre in southern China. Methods This retrospective study enrolled consecutive electrical burn patients admitted to the burn centre of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between 2008 and 2017. Demographic and clinical data and outcomes were recorded. Mann–Whitney U tests/Pearson’s chi-squared tests were used to examine the differences between low-voltage and high-voltage injuries. Results There were 217 high-voltage injuries and 159 low-voltage injuries. High-voltage burns were frequently observed between March and August, and low-voltage burns peaked between June and September. Burn patients were mainly men. Most burns occurred in participants aged 21 to 50 years and in industrial workers and electricians at work or householders at home. Only one person with high-voltage burns died (a mortality rate of 0.46%). Amputation rates were 37.33% for high-voltage burns and 22.01% for low-voltage burns. High-voltage injuries were associated with more extensive burns, longer hospital stays, and more complications and amputations. Conclusions More attention should be paid to prevention of electrical burns in male adults. Particular focus is needed on industrial workers, incidents in the spring and summer, and high-voltage injuries.

Phytoliths are a reliable paleovegetation proxy and have made an important contribution to paleoclimatic studies. However, little is known about the depositional processes affecting soil phytoliths, which limits their use for paleoclimate and paleovegetation reconstructions. Here, we present the results of a study of the vertical translocation characteristics of phytoliths in 40 natural soil profiles in Northeast China. The results show that phytolith concentration decreases within the humic horizon of the soil profiles and that ∼22% of the phytoliths are translocated below the surface of the studied soils. In addition, we find that the translocation rate of phytoliths varies markedly with phytolith type and that phytolith size and aspect ratio also have a significant effect. The orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition in perovskite can alter its optical and electronic properties. Here, Li et al. report an investigation of the size dependent orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition and show that the phase transition temperature decreases with reducing microplate thickness.
