Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown impressive capabilities in complex tasks and interactive environments, yet their creativity remains underexplored. This paper introduces a simulation framework utilizing the game Balderdash to evaluate both the creativity and logical reasoning of LLMs. In Balderdash, players generate fictitious definitions for obscure terms to deceive others while identifying correct definitions. Our framework enables multiple LLM agents to participate in this game, assessing their ability to produce plausible definitions and strategize based on game rules and history. We implemented a centralized game engine featuring various LLMs as participants and a judge LLM to evaluate semantic equivalence. Through a series of experiments, we analyzed the performance of different LLMs, examining metrics such as True Definition Ratio, Deception Ratio, and Correct Guess Ratio. The results provide insights into the creative and deceptive capabilities of LLMs, highlighting their strengths and areas for improvement. Robotic platforms provide repeatable and precise tool positioning that significantly enhances retinal microsurgery. Integration of such systems with intraoperative optical coherence tomography (iOCT) enables image-guided robotic interventions, allowing to autonomously perform advanced treatment possibilities, such as injecting therapeutic agents into the subretinal space. Yet, tissue deformations due to tool-tissue interactions are a major challenge in autonomous iOCT-guided robotic subretinal injection, impacting correct needle positioning and, thus, the outcome of the procedure. This paper presents a novel method for autonomous subretinal injection under iOCT guidance that considers tissue deformations during the insertion procedure. This is achieved through real-time segmentation and 3D reconstruction of the surgical scene from densely sampled iOCT B-scans, which we refer to as B5-scans, to monitor the positioning of the instrument regarding a virtual target layer defined at a relative position between the ILM and RPE. Our experiments on ex-vivo porcine eyes demonstrate dynamic adjustment of the insertion depth and overall improved accuracy in needle positioning compared to previous autonomous insertion approaches. Compared to a 35% success rate in subretinal bleb generation with previous approaches, our proposed method reliably and robustly created subretinal blebs in all our experiments.

Academics increasingly acknowledge the predictive power of social media for a wide variety of events and, more specifically, for financial markets. Anecdotal and empirical findings show that cryptocurrencies are among the financial assets that have been affected by news and influencers' activities on Twitter. However, the extent to which Twitter crypto influencer's posts about trading signals and their effect on market prices is mostly unexplored. In this paper, we use LLMs to uncover buy and not-buy signals from influencers and news outlets' Twitter posts and use a VAR analysis with Granger Causality tests and cross-correlation analysis to understand how these trading signals are temporally correlated with the top nine major cryptocurrencies' prices. Overall, the results show a mixed pattern across cryptocurrencies and temporal periods. However, we found that for the top three cryptocurrencies with the highest presence within news and influencer posts, their aggregated LLM-detected trading signal over the preceding 24 hours granger-causes fluctuations in their market prices, exhibiting a lag of at least 6 hours. In addition, the results reveal fundamental differences in how influencers and news outlets cover cryptocurrencies.

Existing 3D facial emotion modeling have been constrained by limited emotion classes and insufficient datasets. This paper introduces "Emo3D", an extensive "Text-Image-Expression dataset" spanning a wide spectrum of human emotions, each paired with images and 3D blendshapes. Leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs), we generate a diverse array of textual descriptions, facilitating the capture of a broad spectrum of emotional expressions. Using this unique dataset, we conduct a comprehensive evaluation of language-based models' fine-tuning and vision-language models like Contranstive Language Image Pretraining (CLIP) for 3D facial expression synthesis. We also introduce a new evaluation metric for this task to more directly measure the conveyed emotion. Our new evaluation metric, Emo3D, demonstrates its superiority over Mean Squared Error (MSE) metrics in assessing visual-text alignment and semantic richness in 3D facial expressions associated with human emotions. This paper introduces the combination of Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) in the field of biomedical research. Thereby, the results from RS and LIBS are combined with previous DRS results. These noninvasive optical methods, used together, offer thorough analysis of the absorptive and scattering behaviour, elemental composition, and molecular bindings of tissue, without resulting in considerable harm or changes to the sample or the requirement of markers. The study centres on applying this triad of techniques to tissues affected by Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI), a condition characterised by reduced hip mobility due to developmental deformities of the hip joint. The research results in a biochemical pathway model of the condition causing the red staining caused by FAI which origin was unknown until now. This proves that this approach may have significant implications for numerous medical applications and support in exploring complex chemical and biochemical pathways.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has paved the way for revolutionary decision-making processes, which if harnessed appropriately, can contribute to advancements in various sectors, from healthcare to economics. However, its black box nature presents significant ethical challenges related to bias and transparency. AI applications are hugely impacted by biases, presenting inconsistent and unreliable findings, leading to significant costs and consequences, highlighting and perpetuating inequalities and unequal access to resources. Hence, developing safe, reliable, ethical, and Trustworthy AI systems is essential. Our team of researchers working with Trustworthy and Responsible AI, part of the Transdisciplinary Scholarship Initiative within the University of Calgary, conducts research on Trustworthy and Responsible AI, including fairness, bias mitigation, reproducibility, generalization, interpretability, and authenticity. In this paper, we review and discuss the intricacies of AI biases, definitions, methods of detection and mitigation, and metrics for evaluating bias. We also discuss open challenges with regard to the trustworthiness and widespread application of AI across diverse domains of human-centric decision making, as well as guidelines to foster Responsible and Trustworthy AI models., Comment: 44 pages, 2 figures

Producing accurate software models is crucial in model-driven software engineering (MDE). However, modeling complex systems is an error-prone task that requires deep application domain knowledge. In the past decade, several automated techniques have been proposed to support academic and industrial practitioners by providing relevant modeling operations. Nevertheless, those techniques require a huge amount of training data that cannot be available due to several factors, e.g., privacy issues. The advent of large language models (LLMs) can support the generation of synthetic data although state-of-the-art approaches are not yet supporting the generation of modeling operations. To fill the gap, we propose a conceptual framework that combines modeling event logs, intelligent modeling assistants, and the generation of modeling operations using LLMs. In particular, the architecture comprises modeling components that help the designer specify the system, record its operation within a graphical modeling environment, and automatically recommend relevant operations. In addition, we generate a completely new dataset of modeling events by telling on the most prominent LLMs currently available. As a proof of concept, we instantiate the proposed framework using a set of existing modeling tools employed in industrial use cases within different European projects. To assess the proposed methodology, we first evaluate the capability of the examined LLMs to generate realistic modeling operations by relying on well-founded distance metrics. Then, we evaluate the recommended operations by considering real-world industrial modeling artifacts. The emergence of mobile robotics, particularly in the automotive industry, introduces a promising era of enriched user experiences and adept handling of complex navigation challenges. The realization of these advancements necessitates a focused technological effort and the successful execution of numerous intricate tasks, particularly in the critical domain of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). Various artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies, such as deep learning and reinforcement learning, present viable solutions to address the challenges in SLAM. This study specifically explores the application of reinforcement learning in the context of SLAM. By enabling the agent (the robot) to iteratively interact with and receive feedback from its environment, reinforcement learning facilitates the acquisition of navigation and mapping skills, thereby enhancing the robot's decision-making capabilities. This approach offers several advantages, including improved navigation proficiency, increased resilience, reduced dependence on sensor precision, and refinement of the decision-making process. The findings of this study, which provide an overview of reinforcement learning's utilization in SLAM, reveal significant advancements in the field. The investigation also highlights the evolution and innovative integration of these techniques.

In the coming decade, artificial intelligence systems will continue to improve and revolutionise every industry and facet of human life. Designing effective, seamless and symbiotic communication paradigms between humans and AI agents is increasingly important. This paper reports a novel method for human-AI interaction by developing a direct brain-AI interface. We discuss a novel AI model, called MindSpeech, which enables open-vocabulary, continuous decoding for imagined speech. This study focuses on enhancing human-AI communication by utilising high-density functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) data to develop an AI model capable of decoding imagined speech non-invasively. We discuss a new word cloud paradigm for data collection, improving the quality and variety of imagined sentences generated by participants and covering a broad semantic space. Utilising a prompt tuning-based approach, we employed the Llama2 large language model (LLM) for text generation guided by brain signals. Our results show significant improvements in key metrics, such as BLEU-1 and BERT P scores, for three out of four participants, demonstrating the method's effectiveness. Additionally, we demonstrate that combining data from multiple participants enhances the decoder performance, with statistically significant improvements in BERT scores for two participants. Furthermore, we demonstrated significantly above-chance decoding accuracy for imagined speech versus resting conditions and the identified activated brain regions during imagined speech tasks in our study are consistent with the previous studies on brain regions involved in speech encoding. This study underscores the feasibility of continuous imagined speech decoding. By integrating high-density fNIRS with advanced AI techniques, we highlight the potential for non-invasive, accurate communication systems with AI in the near future.

In the coming decade, artificial intelligence systems are set to revolutionise every industry and facet of human life. Building communication systems that enable seamless and symbiotic communication between humans and AI agents is increasingly important. This research advances the field of human-AI interaction by developing an innovative approach to decode imagined speech using non-invasive high-density functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Notably, this study introduces MindGPT, the first thought-to-LLM (large language model) system in the world.

The SNO+ detector operated initially as a water Cherenkov detector. The implementation of a sealed covergas system midway through water data taking resulted in a significant reduction in the activity of $^{222}$Rn daughters in the detector and allowed the lowest background to the solar electron scattering signal above 5 MeV achieved to date. This paper reports an updated SNO+ water phase $^8$B solar neutrino analysis with a total livetime of 282.4 days and an analysis threshold of 3.5 MeV. The $^8$B solar neutrino flux is found to be $\left(2.32^{+0.18}_{-0.17}\text{(stat.)}^{+0.07}_{-0.05}\text{(syst.)}\right)\times10^{6}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ assuming no neutrino oscillations, or $\left(5.36^{+0.41}_{-0.39}\text{(stat.)}^{+0.17}_{-0.16}\text{(syst.)} \right)\times10^{6}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ assuming standard neutrino oscillation parameters, in good agreement with both previous measurements and Standard Solar Model Calculations. The electron recoil spectrum is presented above 3.5 MeV.

Across the life sciences, an ongoing effort over the last 50 years has made data and methods more reproducible and transparent. This openness has led to transformative insights and vastly accelerated scientific progress. For example, structural biology and genomics have undertaken systematic collection and publication of protein sequences and structures over the past half-century, and these data have led to scientific breakthroughs that were unthinkable when data collection first began. We believe that neuroscience is poised to follow the same path, and that principles of open data and open science will transform our understanding of the nervous system in ways that are impossible to predict at the moment. To this end, new social structures along with active and open scientific communities are essential to facilitate and expand the still limited adoption of open science practices in our field. Unified by shared values of openness, we set out to organize a symposium for Open Data in Neuroscience (ODIN) to strengthen our community and facilitate transformative neuroscience research at large. In this report, we share what we learned during this first ODIN event. We also lay out plans for how to grow this movement, document emerging conversations, and propose a path toward a better and more transparent science of tomorrow.

CBCT-guided small animal irradiators encounter challenges in localizing soft-tissue targets due to low imaging contrast. Bioluminescence tomography (BLT) offers a promising solution, but they have largely remained in laboratorial development, limiting accessibility for researchers. In this work, we develop a universal, commercial-graded BLT-guided system (MuriGlo) designed to seamlessly integrate with commercial irradiators and empower researchers for translational studies. We demonstrate its capabilities in supporting in vitro and in vivo studies. The MuriGlo comprises detachable mouse bed, thermostatic control, mirrors, filters, and CCD, enabling multi-projection and multi-spectral imaging. We evaluate that the thermostatic control effectively sustains animal temperature at 37{\deg}C throughout imaging, and quantify that the system can detect as few as 61 GL261-AkaLuc cells in vitro. To illustrate how the MuriGlo can be utilized for in vivo image-guided research, we present 3 strategies, BLT-guided 5-arc, 2-field box, and BLI-guided single-beam, ranging from complicated high-conformal to simplest high-throughput plans. The high conformal BLT-guided 5-arc plan fully covers the gross tumor volume (GTV) at prescribed dose with minimal normal tissue exposure (3.9%), while the simplified, high-throughput BLT-guided 2-field box achieves 100% GTV coverage but results in higher normal tissue exposure (13.1%). Moreover, we demonstrate that the localization accuracy of MuriGlo for both widely-used SARRP and SmART irradiators is within1 mm, and the tumor coverage reaches over 97% with 0.75mm margin. The universal BLT-guided system offers seamless integration with commercial irradiators, achieving comparable localization accuracy, expected to supporting high-precision radiation research.

Signomial geometric programming (SGP) is a computationally challenging, NP-Hard class of nonconvex nonlinear optimization problems. SGP can be solved iteratively using a sequence of convex relaxations; consequently, the strength of such relaxations is an important factor to this iterative approach. Motivated by recent advances in solving exponential conic programming (ECP) problems, this paper develops a novel convex relaxation for SGP. Unlike existing work on relaxations, the base model in this paper does not assume bounded variables. However, bounded variables or monomial terms can be used to strengthen the relaxation by means of additional valid linear inequalities. We show how to embed the ECP relaxation in an iterative algorithm for SGP; leveraging recent advances in interior point method solvers, our computational experiments demonstrate the practical effectiveness of this approach., Comment: 26 pages, 2 figures

Recent advancements in self-driving car technologies have enabled them to navigate autonomously through various environments. However, one of the critical challenges in autonomous vehicle operation is trajectory planning, especially in dynamic environments with moving obstacles. This research aims to tackle this challenge by proposing a robust algorithm tailored for autonomous cars operating in dynamic environments with moving obstacles. The algorithm introduces two main innovations. Firstly, it defines path density by adjusting the number of waypoints along the trajectory, optimizing their distribution for accuracy in curved areas and reducing computational complexity in straight sections. Secondly, it integrates hierarchical motion planning algorithms, combining global planning with an enhanced $A^*$ graph-based method and local planning using the time elastic band algorithm with moving obstacle detection considering different motion models. The proposed algorithm is adaptable for different vehicle types and mobile robots, making it versatile for real-world applications. Simulation results demonstrate its effectiveness across various conditions, promising safer and more efficient navigation for autonomous vehicles in dynamic environments. The SNO+ collaboration reports its first spectral analysis of long-baseline reactor antineutrino oscillation using 114 tonne-years of data. Fitting the neutrino oscillation probability to the observed energy spectrum yields constraints on the neutrino mass-squared difference $\Delta m^2_{21}$. In the ranges allowed by previous measurements, the best-fit $\Delta m^2_{21}$ is (8.85$^{+1.10}_{-1.33}$) $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ eV$^2$. This measurement is continuing in the next phases of SNO+ and is expected to surpass the present global precision on $\Delta m^2_{21}$ with about three years of data.

In this paper, we present a novel auto-calibration scheme for the joint estimation of the two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) and the mutual coupling matrix (MCM) for a signal measured using uniform circular arrays. The method employs an integrated wideband dictionary to mitigate the detrimental effects of the discretization of the continuous parameter space over the considered azimuth and elevation angles. This leads to a reduction of the computational complexity and obtaining of more accurate DOA estimates. Given the more reliable DOA estimates, the method also allows for the estimation of more accurate mutual coupling coefficients. The method utilizes an integrated dictionary in order to iteratively refine the active parameter space, thereby reducing the required computational complexity without reducing the overall performance. The complexity is further reduced by employing only the dominant subspace of the measured signal. Furthermore, the proposed method does not require a constraint on the prior knowledge of the number of nonzero coupling coefficients nor suffer from ambiguity problems. Moreover, a simple formulation for 2-D non-numerical integration is presented. Despite many advantages of direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) in sparse representation domain, they have high computational complexity. This paper presents a new method for real-valued 2-D DOAs estimation of sources in a uniform circular array configuration. This method uses a transformation based on phase mode excitation in uniform circular arrays which called real beamspace L1-SVD (RB-L1SVD). This unitary transformation converts complex manifold matrix to real one, so that the computational complexity is decreased with respect to complex valued computations,its computation, at least, is one,fourth of the complex-valued case; moreover, some benefits from using this transformation are robustness to array imperfections, a better noise suppression because of exploiting an additional real structure, and etc. Numerical results demonstrate the better performance of the proposed approach over previous techniques such as C-L1SVD, RB-ESPRIT, and RB-MUSIC, especially in low signal-to-noise ratios.

Prior research has established associations between individuals' language usage and their personal traits; our linguistic patterns reveal information about our personalities, emotional states, and beliefs. However, with the increasing adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) as writing assistants in everyday writing, a critical question emerges: are authors' linguistic patterns still predictive of their personal traits when LLMs are involved in the writing process? We investigate the impact of LLMs on the linguistic markers of demographic and psychological traits, specifically examining three LLMs - GPT3.5, Llama 2, and Gemini - across six different traits: gender, age, political affiliation, personality, empathy, and morality. Our findings indicate that although the use of LLMs slightly reduces the predictive power of linguistic patterns over authors' personal traits, the significant changes are infrequent, and the use of LLMs does not fully diminish the predictive power of authors' linguistic patterns over their personal traits. We also note that some theoretically established lexical-based linguistic markers lose their reliability as predictors when LLMs are used in the writing process. Our findings have important implications for the study of linguistic markers of personal traits in the age of LLMs.

We investigate the impact of incorporating anomaly-free representations of vector-like leptons into the Standard Model, aiming to address longstanding puzzles related to the anomalous magnetic moments of the muon and electron while maintaining consistency with neutrino masses and mixings. We find that among the various representations of vector-like leptons permitted by the Standard Model gauge symmetry, only weak doublets and singlets offer satisfactory solutions, all associated with a significantly constrained parameter space. Our analysis delves into the associated parameter space, identifying representative benchmark scenarios suitable for collider studies. These setups yield a distinctive six-lepton signature whose associated signals can easily be distinguished from the Standard Model background, providing a clear signal indicative of new physics models featuring vector-like leptons. Our work hence sheds light on the potential implications of vector-like leptons in resolving discrepancies inherent to the Standard Model, while also offering insights into experimental avenues for further exploration., Comment: 9 figures, 6 tables

Training a linear classifier or lightweight model on top of pretrained vision model outputs, so-called 'frozen features', leads to impressive performance on a number of downstream few-shot tasks. Currently, frozen features are not modified during training. On the other hand, when networks are trained directly on images, data augmentation is a standard recipe that improves performance with no substantial overhead. In this paper, we conduct an extensive pilot study on few-shot image classification that explores applying data augmentations in the frozen feature space, dubbed 'frozen feature augmentation (FroFA)', covering twenty augmentations in total. Our study demonstrates that adopting a deceptively simple pointwise FroFA, such as brightness, can improve few-shot performance consistently across three network architectures, three large pretraining datasets, and eight transfer datasets., Comment: CVPR 2024 (18 pages, main paper + supplementary material)

Hospital readmission, defined as patients being re-hospitalized shortly after discharge, is a critical concern as it impacts patient outcomes and healthcare costs. Identifying patients at risk of readmission allows for timely interventions, reducing re-hospitalization rates and overall treatment costs. This study focuses on predicting patient readmission within less than 30 days using text mining techniques applied to discharge report texts from electronic health records (EHR). Various machine learning and deep learning methods were employed to develop a classification model for this purpose. A novel aspect of this research involves leveraging the Bio-Discharge Summary Bert (BDSS) model along with principal component analysis (PCA) feature extraction to preprocess data for deep learning model input. Our analysis of the MIMIC-III dataset indicates that our approach, which combines the BDSS model with a multilayer perceptron (MLP), outperforms state-of-the-art methods. This model achieved a recall of 94% and an area under the curve (AUC) of 75%, showcasing its effectiveness in predicting patient readmissions. This study contributes to the advancement of predictive modeling in healthcare by integrating text mining techniques with deep learning algorithms to improve patient outcomes and optimize resource allocation.

In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

In today's digital world, social media plays a significant role in facilitating communication and content sharing. However, the exponential rise in user-generated content has led to challenges in maintaining a respectful online environment. In some cases, users have taken advantage of anonymity in order to use harmful language, which can negatively affect the user experience and pose serious social problems. Recognizing the limitations of manual moderation, automatic detection systems have been developed to tackle this problem. Nevertheless, several obstacles persist, including the absence of a universal definition for harmful language, inadequate datasets across languages, the need for detailed annotation guideline, and most importantly, a comprehensive framework. This study aims to address these challenges by introducing, for the first time, a detailed framework adaptable to any language. This framework encompasses various aspects of harmful language detection. A key component of the framework is the development of a general and detailed annotation guideline. Additionally, the integration of sentiment analysis represents a novel approach to enhancing harmful language detection. Also, a definition of harmful language based on the review of different related concepts is presented. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, its implementation in a challenging low-resource language is conducted. We collected a Persian dataset and applied the annotation guideline for harmful detection and sentiment analysis. Next, we present baseline experiments utilizing machine and deep learning methods to set benchmarks. Results prove the framework's high performance, achieving an accuracy of 99.4% in offensive language detection and 66.2% in sentiment analysis.

Dental diseases have a significant impact on a considerable portion of the population, leading to various health issues that can detrimentally affect individuals' overall well-being. The integration of automated systems in oral healthcare has become increasingly crucial. Machine learning approaches offer a viable solution to address challenges such as diagnostic difficulties, inefficiencies, and errors in oral disease diagnosis. These methods prove particularly useful when physicians struggle to predict or diagnose diseases at their early stages. In this study, thirteen different machine learning, deep learning, and large language models were employed to determine the severity level of oral health issues based on radiologists' reports. The results revealed that the Few-shot learning with SBERT and Multi-Layer Perceptron model outperformed all other models across various experiments, achieving an impressive accuracy of 94.1% as the best result. Consequently, this model exhibits promise as a reliable tool for evaluating the severity of oral diseases, enabling patients to receive more effective treatment and aiding healthcare professionals in making informed decisions regarding resource allocation and the management of high-risk patients.

In subjective NLP tasks, where a single ground truth does not exist, the inclusion of diverse annotators becomes crucial as their unique perspectives significantly influence the annotations. In realistic scenarios, the annotation budget often becomes the main determinant of the number of perspectives (i.e., annotators) included in the data and subsequent modeling. We introduce a novel framework for annotation collection and modeling in subjective tasks that aims to minimize the annotation budget while maximizing the predictive performance for each annotator. Our framework has a two-stage design: first, we rely on a small set of annotators to build a multitask model, and second, we augment the model for a new perspective by strategically annotating a few samples per annotator. To test our framework at scale, we introduce and release a unique dataset, Moral Foundations Subjective Corpus, of 2000 Reddit posts annotated by 24 annotators for moral sentiment. We demonstrate that our framework surpasses the previous SOTA in capturing the annotators' individual perspectives with as little as 25% of the original annotation budget on two datasets. Furthermore, our framework results in more equitable models, reducing the performance disparity among annotators.

Notions of bundles and \'{e}tal\'{e}s of residuated lattices over a given topological space are introduced and investigated. For a topological space $\mathscr{B}$, we establish that the category of \'{e}tal\'{e}s of residuated lattices over $\mathscr{B}$ with morphisms of \'{e}tal\'{e}s of residuated lattices is coreflective in the category of bundles of residuated lattices over $\mathscr{B}$ along with morphisms of bundles of residuated lattices. We provide a method for transferring an \'{e}tal\'{e} of residuated lattices over a topological space to another, utilizing a continuous map. Introduction This study explores the use of the latest You Only Look Once (YOLO V7) object detection method to enhance kidney detection in medical imaging by training and testing a modified YOLO V7 on medical image formats. Methods Study includes 878 patients with various subtypes of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and 206 patients with normal kidneys. A total of 5657 MRI scans for 1084 patients were retrieved. 326 patients with 1034 tumors recruited from a retrospective maintained database, and bounding boxes were drawn around their tumors. A primary model was trained on 80% of annotated cases, with 20% saved for testing (primary test set). The best primary model was then used to identify tumors in the remaining 861 patients and bounding box coordinates were generated on their scans using the model. Ten benchmark training sets were created with generated coordinates on not-segmented patients. The final model used to predict the kidney in the primary test set. We reported the positive predictive value (PPV), sensitivity, and mean average precision (mAP). Results The primary training set showed an average PPV of 0.94 +/- 0.01, sensitivity of 0.87 +/- 0.04, and mAP of 0.91 +/- 0.02. The best primary model yielded a PPV of 0.97, sensitivity of 0.92, and mAP of 0.95. The final model demonstrated an average PPV of 0.95 +/- 0.03, sensitivity of 0.98 +/- 0.004, and mAP of 0.95 +/- 0.01. Conclusion Using a semi-supervised approach with a medical image library, we developed a high-performing model for kidney detection. Further external validation is required to assess the model's generalizability.

We study the fractal structure of language, aiming to provide a precise formalism for quantifying properties that may have been previously suspected but not formally shown. We establish that language is: (1) self-similar, exhibiting complexities at all levels of granularity, with no particular characteristic context length, and (2) long-range dependent (LRD), with a Hurst parameter of approximately H=0.7. Based on these findings, we argue that short-term patterns/dependencies in language, such as in paragraphs, mirror the patterns/dependencies over larger scopes, like entire documents. This may shed some light on how next-token prediction can capture the structure of text across multiple levels of granularity, from words and clauses to broader contexts and intents. In addition, we carry out an extensive analysis across different domains and architectures, showing that fractal parameters are robust. Finally, we demonstrate that the tiny variations in fractal parameters seen across LLMs improve upon perplexity-based bits-per-byte (BPB) in predicting their downstream performance. Interactions between the government officials and civilians affect public wellbeing and the state legitimacy that is necessary for the functioning of democratic society. Police officers, the most visible and contacted agents of the state, interact with the public more than 20 million times a year during traffic stops. Today, these interactions are regularly recorded by body-worn cameras (BWCs), which are lauded as a means to enhance police accountability and improve police-public interactions. However, the timely analysis of these recordings is hampered by a lack of reliable automated tools that can enable the analysis of these complex and contested police-public interactions. This article proposes an approach to developing new multi-perspective, multimodal machine learning (ML) tools to analyze the audio, video, and transcript information from this BWC footage. Our approach begins by identifying the aspects of communication most salient to different stakeholders, including both community members and police officers. We move away from modeling approaches built around the existence of a single ground truth and instead utilize new advances in soft labeling to incorporate variation in how different observers perceive the same interactions. We argue that this inclusive approach to the conceptualization and design of new ML tools is broadly applicable to the study of communication and development of analytic tools across domains of human interaction, including education, medicine, and the workplace., Comment: 13 pages
