Previous studies have reported that the use of music in foreign language methodologies (e.g. hand-clapping or songs) can help learners to acquire foreign languages. It remains unclear, however, whether this kind of method helps every learner equally or whether it is more beneficial for learners with a musical background, such as musical practice, musical abilities, or engagement in musical activities. In order to answer this question, we tested 80 French speakers whose musical background was evaluated using a questionnaire. They performed a word stress processing task in Dutch containing spoken stimuli, spoken stimuli with a beat, or sung stimuli. The results show that learners with some musical characteristics obtain higher scores than other learners and that the use of music in the task can favor learners with a musical background.

En parallèle à un phénomène plus global au niveau international, les cours et programmes dispensés en langue étrangère sont de plus en plus nombreux dans l’enseignement supérieur en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. La recherche scientifique s’est saisie de cette question pour mieux appréhender les enjeux et implications de l’ « English as Medium of Instruction » (EMI), celui-ci se rapportant plus précisément aux cours non linguistiques dispensés en anglais dans les pays où cette langue n’est pas la langue d’enseignement officielle. Cette littérature en plein essor est cependant encore lacunaire et met en évidence l’importance de prendre en considération les spécificités locales. En Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles, le cadre institutionnel a notamment conduit à la mise en œuvre de programmes partiellement en langue étrangère, avec des cours dispensés en français et en anglais mais aussi en néerlandais. Dans le cadre de ce projet de recherche, les objectifs sont d’investiguer les parcours et expériences mais aussi les stratégies et pratiques mises en œuvre dans le cadre de ces cours et programmes en langue étrangère, tant du point de vue des étudiant·es que des enseignant·es. L’objectif est de pouvoir formuler des recommandations pratiques en lien avec l’état actuel des connaissances mais aussi avec les réalités du contexte local en Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

This study examines the language requirements university graduates in French-speaking Belgium must meet in order to increase their job opportunities. We wanted to find out which languages higher education graduates need to know and which level/skills are expected. To answer these questions, a double analysis was conducted. 3300 UCLouvain alumni from 2014 and 2018 completed an online questionnaire that probed, among other things, the languages used in the workplace. We then analysed 2362 vacancies published on the UCLouvain career platform Career Center by JobTeaser between July 2018 and June 2019. The results show that mainly the three languages French/English/Dutch are required, although differences can be noticed depending on the workplace or the activity sector. In addition, we observe some differences between the expectations of the employers and the actual language use of the graduates.

BACKGROUND In recent years, the relationship between music and language has received increasingly more attention, resulting in multiple studies analyzing the impact of music training or musical skills on different domains of foreign language acquisition, such as phonological skills (Milovanov et. al 2010; Slevc et. al 2006), vocabulary (Swaminathan et. al 2013) and prosody perception (Degrave 2020). However, studies addressing the influence of music on prosody production in a foreign language are rather scarce (Gralińska-Brawata et. al 2017) and the main studies in the field of prosody address the acquisition of English (Marie et. al 2011), Mandarin (Cason et. al 2020) and Spanish (Dupoux et. al 2008). Prosody encompasses “all sound properties of an utterance that are not related to those of its vowels and consonants” (Rietveld et. al 2016) and constitutes the “melodic and rhythmic framework” of an oral utterance (Degrave 2021). The acquisition of Dutch is especially interesting since prosodic differences with French typically cause problems in acquiring spoken Dutch (Rietveld et. al 2016; Rasier 2006). Recent research has studied the perception and production of Dutch word and sentence stress by francophone learners (Rietveld et. al 2016; Degrave 2019; Michaux et. al 2013). Dutch stress is variable, and thus less predictable than the fixed stress in French, and has different functions, i.e. carrying lexical information or structuring information in a sentence (Rietveld et. al 2016). Moreover, erroneous stress placement has been found to impair intelligibility and comprehensibility (Michaux et. al 2015). Hence, this study focuses on the production of Dutch prosody (word and sentence stress) by French-speaking musicians and non-musicians. Ces dernières années, l’enseignement supérieur a connu une importante croissance du nombre de cours non linguistiques dispensés en anglais dans les pays où cette langue n’est pas une langue d’enseignement officielle (Macaro, Curle, Pun, An, & Dearden, 2018). En pleine expansion, la littérature scientifique concernant l’English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) est encore lacunaire (Macaro et al., 2018). D’importantes variations sont par ailleurs constatées d’un contexte à l’autre, en fonction des modalités d’implémentation. En Belgique francophone, une grande marge de manœuvre est laissée aux institutions, ce qui les amène à proposer, outre des cours isolés, des programmes (partiellement) en langue étrangère (principalement anglais et/ou néerlandais). Dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche plus large sur ces programmes, nous avons cherché à appréhender le parcours, les perceptions et les pratiques d’enseignants issus de deux universités francophones belges dispensant des cours en langue étrangère. Des entretiens semi-directifs ont été réalisés à l’été 2021 avec 13 enseignants en sciences humaines. L’analyse de contenu a fait émerger quatre thématiques principales : la diversité des conceptions des enseignants, les pratiques spécifiquement mises en œuvre, le développement professionnel principalement informel et les facteurs contextuels pouvant affecter le vécu enseignant. Dans le cadre de cette présentation, nous nous focaliserons sur les deux premières thématiques. Nos résultats indiquent tout d’abord que différentes conceptions du cours dispensé en langue étrangère peuvent coexister, notamment concernant les visées des cours (favoriser l’employabilité, la mobilité, le développement de talents, l’ouverture à la diversité ou encore l’accès aux savoirs). Ces visées sont comparables à celles identifiées dans la littérature scientifique (Briggs, Dearden, & Macaro, 2018) mais nos entretiens mettent en outre en lumière que des décalages au niveau de ces conceptions peuven

There is growing evidence in the literature for the positive effect of high variability phonetic training (HVPT) on the perception of non-native contrasts. In the present study, we aim to examine the robustness of perceptual training effects. We define robustness along three dimensions: (1) the generalizability of the training to novel tokens and talkers, (2) the long-term retention effects of the training, and (3) the effect of training in non-optimal listening conditions, i.e., with noise added to the signal. The participants are 48 adult L1 French learners of Dutch in Belgium, 27 of whom are enrolled in secondary education, while the others are university students (N=21). Participants are assigned to an experimental (N=27) or a control group (N=21). Both groups take a pre-test, post-test and delayed post-test, which consists of a lexical identification task with and without noise. The experimental group is trained on five Dutch sound contrasts in five multimodal HVPT sessions, consisting of perceptual identification tasks with feedback and metalinguistic information. The results show a nuanced picture: overall, where training effects are found, learners are able to generalize these to novel tokens and talkers, thus confirming the effectiveness of HVPT for pronunciation training. However, the results also reveal considerable variability in the effectiveness of HVPT along most robustness variables, which can to a large extent be attributed to the moderating variables we examined, being the type of learners (secondary education vs. university) and the type of sound contrast.

Het profiel omvat een algemene beschrijving van competenties die geldig zijn voor docenten NVT ongeacht de enorme diversiteit wat betreft doelgroep en onderwijsvorm, geografische factoren (taalgebieden), status van het vak Nederlands (verplicht schoolvak, keuzevak, hoofdvak, bijvak, cursus, vaktaal) en onderwijstradities in de verschillende landen en docenten (moedertaal, opleiding, werkervaring, motivatie). Het profiel is gericht op kerncompetenties die voor alle docenten NVT geldig zijn. Dat neemt niet weg dat het profiel zo nodig aangevuld kan worden met competenties die gevraagd worden in de verschillende landen, afhankelijk van de status van de taal binnen verschillende onderwijsprogramma’s en verschillende onderwijstradities. De doelgroep omvat docenten NVT die onderwijs verzorgen buiten Nederland en Vlaanderen in het: basisonderwijs (verplicht vak of keuzevak); voortgezet onderwijs (verplicht vak of keuzevak); hoger onderwijs (als hoofdvak binnen een studie Nederlands, als bijvak); volwassenenonderwijs in taalinstituten, volksuniversiteiten, en dergelijke.

There is growing evidence in the literature for the positive effect of phonetic training on the perception of non-native phonemes. Gains have been most evident in the case of high variability phonetic training (HVPT), which has been shown to enhance lexical encoding (Mora-Plaza et al., 2019). By far the majority of training studies have targeted L2 English, with many focusing on the /r/-/l/ contrast (e.g. Wang & Munro, 2004; Hazan et al., 2005). In this experimental study, we take Sakai and Moorman's (2018: 215) advice to increase the range of languages and target phonemes to heart by training L1 French learners of Dutch on five different vowel and consonant contrasts which are known to be difficult for this group of learners (Hiligsmann & Rasier, 2007). The participants in this study are 30 adult L1 French learners of Dutch in the French-speaking part of Belgium, where Dutch is taught as a foreign language. Participants are assigned to an experimental (N=15) or a control group (N=15), representing proficiency levels ranging from pre- to low intermediate. Both groups take a pre-test, post-test and delayed post-test, which consists of a lexical identification task with and without noise. Only the experimental group is trained on the target contrasts in five multimodal HVPT sessions, consisting of perceptual identification tasks with feedback and metalinguistic information. The analyses calculate effect sizes of training for the experimental group compared to the control group for each of the five contrasts separately. The results suggest that a thorough understanding of the differential impact of HVPT on vowel and consonant perception requires the systematic study of a broad range of phonemic contrasts in languages other than English. The findings will also be discussed in light of current classroom practices.

L’encadrement de travaux pratiques dans l’enseignement supérieur fait parfois face à certaines difficultés, telles que la multiplicité des compétences et connaissances à travailler dans un laps de temps réduit et les niveaux de maîtrise variables d’un étudiant à l’autre. Par ailleurs, il est important que les travaux pratiques puissent soutenir le développement des capacités d’autonomie et de réflexivité des étudiants : au cours de leurs études supérieures, ceux-ci doivent en effet apprendre à saisir ce qui est attendu d’eux, à évaluer leur niveau, à mettre en place des stratégies d’amélioration et à analyser les progrès ou lacunes persistantes (Ambrose, Bridges, DiPietro, Lovett, & Norman, 2010). Les travaux pratiques, qui se déroulent en plus petits groupes, dans un objectif pratique, nous semble un terrain favorable pour accompagner les étudiants dans le développement de ces capacités. Pour faire face à ces défis, nous avons organisé, dans le cadre d’exercices de maitrise de langue (en l’occurrence de néerlandais langue étrangère), les travaux pratiques sous format de « circuit » (Keijzer, Van Gils, & Verheggen, 2016). Plusieurs types d’exercices, répartis dans différents endroits du local de classe, sont proposés aux étudiants. Ceux-ci choisissent eux-mêmes l’organisation de leur travail, le timing pour chaque exercice et les modalités de travail (seul ou en groupe). L’enseignant ne dirige dès lors plus la classe de manière traditionnelle, mais accompagne les étudiants dans leur apprentissage. Il supervise la réalisation des exercices, fournit des explications individuelles et veille aux besoins personnels des étudiants. Ce dispositif, testé au cours d’un semestre de travaux pratiques, a été évalué à partir d’un questionnaire soumis aux étudiants. Celui-ci contenait à la fois des items à évaluer sur une échelle de Likert à 4 points et la possibilité de fournir des commentaires libres. Previous studies revealed that songs can help foreign language learners to recall vocabulary (Ludke, Ferreira, & Overy, 2014; Salcedo, 2010; Tegge, 2015), to segment speech (Schön et al., 2008) and to perceive fine segmental or suprasegmental differences (Lakshminarayanan & Tallal, 2007; Moradi & Shahrokhi, 2014). However, little is known about the effect of the use of music on foreign lexical stress perception (Kolinsky, Cuvelier, Goetry, Peretz, & Morais, 2009). This acquisition is often problematic for speakers of a language that does not contain lexical stress (Dupoux, Sebastián-Gallés, Navarrete, & Peperkamp, 2008). Moreover, it is still unclear whether the use of music is equally beneficial to learners with and without musical training (Larrouy-Maestri, Leybaert, & Kolinsky, 2013). In our research, we examined whether foreign language lexical stress can be facilitated by the use of a melody or a beat and whether the musical profile of the learners interacts with the perception. We tested two groups of French learners of Dutch: one group of musicians and non-musicians (N = 46) and one group of learners of Dutch at the university (N = 80).They all performed a XAB discrimination task: they heard stimuli of three Dutch words and non-words varying in the position of the word stress and mentioned which of the two last matched with the first one. The stimuli were either naturally spoken, either spoken with a beat on the stress (rhythmical stimuli), either sung (musical stimuli). After the perception tests, participants filled in questionnaires to evaluate their musical profile. Results show that accuracy rate of lexical stress perception is higher for musical stimuli than for rhythmical or spoken stimuli, and for musicians compared to non-musicians.

The purpose of this paper is to review recent research illustrating the importance of prosody in foreign language acquisition and to examine whether music might help in this learning process. The paper begins by defining prosody and by examining foreign language prosody acquisition, stating the difficulties for learners and the potential effect of non-target prosody on communication, notably on comprehensibility, intelligibility and accentedness. A subsequent section focuses on Dutch prosodic characteristics and the problems foreign language learners may encounter in acquiring them. Based on this general description of foreign language prosody acquisition, the paper then zooms in on the link between music and prosody, and on the potential effect of music training, musical abilities or the use of music in the foreign language classroom on foreign language prosody acquisition. The paper ends with a short discussion on avenues for future research.

In onze sterk geglobaliseerde en digitale samenleving is meertaligheid een troef (Angouri, 2014; Britt-Louise Gunnarsson, 2014). De laatste jaren hebben tal van studies (Hiligsmann & Beheydt, 2011; Janssens, 2018; Le Forem, 2017; Mettewie & Van Mensel, 2009) gewezen op de behoefte aan meertalige arbeidskrachten in België, in het bijzonder in Brussel. In dit onderzoek gaan we in op de taaleisen waar universitair afgestudeerden in Franstalig België aan moeten voldoen om meer kans te maken op de arbeidsmarkt. We wilden nagaan welke talen hoger opgeleiden moeten kennen, welk niveau en welke vaardigheden van hen verwacht worden. Om deze vragen te beantwoorden is een dubbele analyse uitgevoerd. Ten eerste hebben 2.000 alumni van de UCLouvain van 2014 en 2018 een online vragenlijst ingevuld waarmee o.a. gepeild werd naar de talen die op de werkvloer gebruikt worden (Degrave e.a. 2020). Vervolgens analyseerden we ca. 2.500 vacatures die tussen juli 2018 en juni 2019 op het UCLouvain-loopbaanplatform Career Center by JobTeaser gepubliceerd zijn (Pomponio 2020). Tijdens de lezing zullen de voornaamste resultaten van de twee onderzoeken uitgebreid besproken worden.

Onderzoek wijst uit dat CLIL-leerders meer moeilijkheden ondervinden bij productieve vaardigheden (schrijven en spreken) dan bij receptieve vaardigheden (lezen en luisteren) (zie o.a. Dalton-Puffer 2008). In deze presentatie vragen we ons af of deze bevindingen ook gelden voor enkele taalkundige kenmerken in het Nederlands van Franstalige CLIL- en niet-CLIL-leerders. De resultaten van een grootschalig onderzoek (zie Hiligsmann et al. 2017) laten zien dat het effect van CLIL op de vreemde taal naargelang het onderzochte taalkenmerk varieert. Er zal uitgebreid ingegaan worden op zowel fonetische/fonologische, syntactische als lexicale variabelen. Bij bepaalde aspecten blijkt de impact van CLIL een duidelijke invloed te hebben op het bereikte taalvaardigheidsniveau, bij andere is dat veel minder het geval en blijkt CLIL zelfs geen effect te hebben. Each language has its own ‘melody’, its own prosody. Mastery of the latter is essential in oral communication, but can be problematic when learning a foreign language. One of the difficult aspects of prosody acquisition is lexical stress. Lexical stress is the more prominent syllable of a word, whose place can change the meaning of the word (for example in Dutch VOORkomen - to happen; to anticipate, voorKOmen - to prevent). Several studies have reported that learners are, under certain conditions, ‘deaf’ to lexical stress. However, this ‘stress deafness’ may vary according to certain characteristics of the learners (e.g. mother tongue) or the particularities of the task to be performed (e. g. memory load). This study focuses on the perception of Dutch by French-speakers. It analyses whether music can help to perceive lexical stress. Different studies have indeed shown that learners with musical training or musical ability outperform other learners in various language tasks, and that the use of music in language teaching methods can facilitate the acquisition of language skills. However, few studies have focused on the relationship between music and the perception of lexical stress. The main results of this research show that musicians outperform non-musicians in the perception of lexical stress in a foreign language and that the use of melody or rhythm in a perception task reduces ‘stress deafness’., Chaque langue possède sa propre ‘mélodie’, sa propre prosodie. La maîtrise de celle-ci est essentielle dans la communication orale, mais peut s'avérer problématique lors de l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère. Un des aspects difficiles de l'acquisition de la prosodie est l’accent lexical. L'accent lexical est la syllabe d’un mot prononcée de manière plus marquée, dont la place peut modifier le sens du mot (par exemple en néerlandais VOORkomen – se passer ; devancer, voorKOmen- prévenir, empêcher). Plusieurs études ont rapporté que des apprenants sont, dans certaines conditions, ‘sourds’ à cet accent. Cette ‘surdité accentuelle’ peut néanmoins varier en fonction de certaines caractéristiques des apprenants (par exemple, la langue maternelle) ou de particularités de la tâche à effectuer (par exemple, la charge cognitive). Dans cette étude, qui se concentre sur la perception du néerlandais par des francophones, nous analysons si la musique peut aider à percevoir l’accent lexical. En effet, diverses recherches ont montré que les apprenants ayant une formation ou une aptitude musicale surpassent les autres apprenants dans diverses tâches linguistiques, et que l'utilisation de la musique dans les méthodes d'enseignement des langues peut faciliter l'acquisition de compétences langagières. Cependant, peu d’études se sont concentrées sur le lien entre la musique et la perception de l’accent lexical. Les résultats principaux de notre recherche montrent d’une part que les musiciens surpassent les non-musiciens pour la perception de l’accent lexical d’une langue étrangère et d’autre part que l'utilisation d'une mélodie ou du rythme dans une tâche de perception réduit ‘la surdité accentuelle’., (LALE - Langues et lettres) -- UCL, 2019

Despite a positive attitude towards the use of music in the foreign language classroom, teachers rarely integrate music into their lessons. Studies suggest two main explanations for this discrepancy: a limited knowledge of adapted material and a lack of theoretical grounding to support the use of music in the foreign language classroom. This article aims at examining how and why music can be used in the foreign language classroom. The first section describes some musical methodologies frequently used for language acquisition over time and provides references to resources containing music-based exercises for foreign language learning. The second part reviews research studies about the potential benefits of music-related methodologies for language acquisition and for specific linguistic skills.

Neuroscience has recently reported that music and speech are intertwined: some neural responses in music and speech are common (Peretz et al. 2015) and music can induce lasting changes in the brain among others for speech processing, such as pitch, syntax or phoneme processing (Marie et al. 2011). Besides these neurological observations, many behavioral studies report a facilitation effect of music on (foreign) language acquisition. On the one hand, musical characteristics of the learner, such as musical training or aptitude, seem to benefit language performance (Chobert & Besson 2013, Kolinsky et al. 2009). On the other hand, the use of music in language teaching methodology, such as songs or rhythmical activities, appear to facilitate language acquisition (Ludke 2016, Schön et al. 2018). In our study, we aimed to analyze if music, either as a characteristic of the learner or used in language teaching methods, could help learners to perceive lexical stress. Lexical stress is indeed often problematic for speakers of a language that do not contain lexical stress. Dupoux et al. Studenten die zich specialiseren in een taal worden redelijk snel geconfronteerd met de specifieke wetenschappelijke taal van vakbladen of wetenschappelijke tijdschriften. Voor het Engels, de wetenschappelijke taal bij uitstek, bestaat er al veel materiaal, zowel voor moedertaal- als voor niet-moedertaalsprekers. Voor talen die minder verspreid zijn in termen van wetenschappelijke literatuur is het aantal tools heel beperkt of zijn die niet bedoeld voor anderstaligen. Dat is bijvoorbeeld het geval voor het Nederlands: leermateriaal is moeilijk te vinden en houdt vaak geen rekening met de leermoeilijkheden waarmee niet-Nederlandstalige studenten worden geconfronteerd. Om in deze leemte te voorzien, werd ANA ontwikkeld. ANA is een gratis website die anderstaligen in staat stelt om vertrouwd te raken met de typische talige patronen van in het Nederlands geschreven wetenschappelijke teksten. Met de hulp van de vriendelijke specialiste Ana heeft de gebruiker toegang tot drie hoofdrubrieken. Ten eerste een catalogus met specifieke zinsstructuren uit wetenschappelijke teksten. Daarin kunnen NVT-leerders voor elk deel van een wetenschappelijke tekst specifieke formuleringen en synoniemen vinden. Bovendien kan iedere willekeurige bezoeker die catalogus aanvullen met nog niet vermelde formuleringen. Dankzij die editing functie zijn de gebruikers actief bezig met de website en zal de catalogus regelmatig bijgewerkt worden. Ten tweede, tips voor het opstellen van wetenschappelijke werkstukken. Die rubriek geeft antwoorden op door jonge wetenschappers veelgestelde vragen. Ten derde, oefeningen over het academisch schrijven. Daar kunnen de gebruikers de wetenschappelijke taal actief beoefenen. Tijdens de presentatie geven we een demo van ANA.

Vocabulaire, formules de communication, grammaire, prononciation, orthographe - Explications, exemples, règles - Plus de 100 exercices, avec corrigé

Prosody is essential in foreign language (FL) proficiency but is not always easy to acquire, particularly when languages show different prosodic systems such as Dutch and French. Considering the acoustic and neurological parallelism between music and language, this study aims at analysing the impact of musical elements on the perception of Dutch word stress by French learners. More specifically, we examined whether the perception of Dutch word stress was positively influenced by (1) the different musical characteristics of the learners, such as music training, musical abilities or engagement in music activities, and (2) FL teaching methods using music (melodies or rhythm). 36 university students filled in a music questionnaire determining their musical characteristics and performed a XAB recognition task, in which stimuli where either spoken, either spoken on a beat, either sung. Results showed that there exist positive and significant correlations between some musical characteristics of the learners and the perception of Dutch word stress. Moreover, listeners detect word stress significantly better and faster when the words are sung than when they are naturally spoken or spoken on a beat. As such, our results suggest that the perception of Dutch word stress can be influenced by (1) personal musical characteristics, and (2) the use of melodies in FL teaching methods.

Background: The Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index (Gold-MSI) (1) is a self-report inventory measuring levels of different musical abilities and expertise. Although the Gold-MSI is available in English, German and Danish, no French version has yet been validated. Aims: The current study aims at analyzing reliability and validity of a French translation of the Gold-MSI in a large Belgian/French population. Method: The French version of the Gold-MSI has been obtained after different traditional translation steps. The final version was completed online by 795 persons. Results: The McDonald’s coefficient omega, Cronbach’s alpha and Guttman’s lambda indicate that the French version of the Gold-MSI has very good psychometric properties and internal consistency. Conclusions: This study shows that the French version of the Goldsmiths Musical Sophistication Index is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring levels of different musical abilities and expertise. This translation can contribute to research about musical skills and behaviors in French speaking regions.

Prosody is essential in foreign language oral proficiency since it seems to have an important impact on perceived strength of one’s L2 accent [1]. However, methods to teach it are rather scarce [2] and prosodic difficulties remain in leaners proficiency even after many years of classes. This is for example the case for the French speaking students of Dutch, whether at sentence [3] or at word level [4]. Considering the parallelism between music and language in both acoustic properties and neurological processing [5, 6], we could wonder whether music can help learners in prosodic proficiency. It has already been stated that music training or musical aptitude can improve some language capacities, such as the perception of pitch changes [7, 8]. Moreover, the use of music as a didactic tool seems to have a positive influence on some aspects of language learning, like word segmentation [9] or syllable discrimination [10]. However, the influence of both musical aptitude and musical training on prosodic proficiency has not been examined on a systematic way, let alone the impact of the use of music as a didactic tool. The project we carried out aims to remedy this lack of information, since it analyses the impact of music training, of musical aptitude, and of the use of music as a didactic tool on the perception of lexical stress of Dutch (which has a variable word stress with a lexical property) by speakers of French (which has a ‘primary accent’ which falls on the final syllable of the word (group)). For this purpose, we tested French university students learning Dutch. They heard 96 stimuli consisting of three words, the first one pronounced by a man and the two following words pronounced by a woman, with variation in the position of the lexical stress (e.g. doorkruisen ( to cross something out) – doorkruisen (to go over something) – doorkruisen). They then had to say, as quickly as possible, which word pronounced by the woman has the same pronunciation as the word said b

French and Dutch have different word prosodic systems: French has a ‘primary accent’ which falls on the final syllable of the word (group), whereas Dutch has a variable word stress with a lexical property (e.g. ondergaan: to go down / ondergaan: to undergo, to go through). This difference leads to difficulties for French learners to perceive and to produce Dutch word stress. Based on the literature about the parallelism between music and language and about the effect of music (training) on language abilities, this project aims to examine whether music (music training and/or music as a didactic tool) could help French students to perceive and/or to produce Dutch word stress. In order to answer this question, university students, musicians and non-musicians, will be tested in a perception task and a production task. The perception test will be an auditory match-to-sample task in which subjects would be separated in three conditions: naturally spoken stimuli, stimuli spoken to a beat, sung stimuli. The production test will consist of a reading task with a pretest-intervention-posttest design in which the intervention will be spoken, spoken to a beat or sung. « Dak mevrouw, ich eet François en ich spel krak tennis ». De meeste leraren Nederlands die lesgeven aan Franstaligen hebben dit (vrij karikaturale)zinnetje al eens gehoord. Dit laat ons zien hoe moeilijk sommige klanken van het Nederlands uit te spreken zijn voor tweedetaalleerders, onder andere Franstaligen. Naast die constatering kunnen we ons afvragen of de Franstaligen die moeilijke klanken van het Nederlands kunnen waarnemen,en welke factoren een invloed hebben op de discriminatie van die klanken. Daarbij rijst de vraag of de aangeboren of verworven muzikaliteit van de leerders de discriminatie van taalklanken kunnen beïnvloeden:mensen die muziekklanken accuraat kunnen waarnemen, vertonen misschien ook een gevoelige perceptie voor niet-muzikale klanken. Deze bijdrage onderzoekt de moeilijkheidsgraad van de discriminatie van Nederlandse klanken door Franstalige studenten en de invloed van (niet)-muzikale factoren op die vaardigheid.

Apprendre une langue étrangère consiste, notamment, à pouvoir percevoir et à produire correctement la « musique de la langue » et les différents sons qui la composent. Mais comment « enseigner » un aspect si complexe à de jeunes adultes ? Quelles sont les caractéristiques de ces apprenants et quelles méthodes mettre en place en fonction de celles-ci? Cet atelier abordera cette question en deux temps. La première partie portera sur les caractéristiques des apprenants et les facteurs influençant l’apprentissage oral de la langue. Un accent particulier sera mis sur le rôle potentiellement facilitateur des aptitudes et/ou de la formation musicales des apprenants durant l'apprentissage linguistique. Les résultats d'une étude sur ce sujet, menée récemment auprès d'étudiants de néerlandais de l'ILV, seront présentés. De plus, quelques méthodes d'enseignement des langues intégrant la musique seront également brièvement exposées. A la lumière des éléments abordés dans le premier volet, la deuxième partie de cet atelier permettra aux enseignants d’échanger et de réfléchir sur leurs pratiques: quels exercices mettent-ils en place dans leurs cours pour affiner la prononciation? S’agit-il d’exercices de groupe ou d’exercices individuels ? Certains enseignants s'appuient-ils sur des activités musicales dans leur apprentissage de la langue? Celles-ci sont- elles réalisables avec les étudiants universitaires ou sont-ils déjà trop âgés pour une pratique à connotation artistique?

Het eerste deel van de workshop geeft de algemene richtlijnen van het zogenaamde ‘projectgestuurd onderwijs’ en legt uit hoe die onderwijsvorm meertalige contacten kan bevorderen. Vervolgens wordt verslag uitgebracht van een samenwerkingsproject tussen UCL- en KUL-studenten dat in 2011 is uitgevoerd. Gedurende een heel semester hebben de studenten ‘Meertalige communicatie’ van de UCL in groepsverband gewerkt aan de oprichting van VVV-kantoren die gespecialiseerd zijn in verschillende aspecten van het (studenten)leven in Louvain-la-Neuve: cultuur, geschiedenis, folklore, enz. Daarvoor hebben ze ook maandenlang met potentiële ‘klanten’ gecommuniceerd, i.c. met studiegenoten van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. De mailuitwisseling werd afgesloten met een ontmoeting in Louvain-la-Neuve, waarbij elk UCL-‘bedrijfje’ Louvain-la-Neuve heeft laten ontdekken door haar KUL-‘klanten’. Ten slotte zullen de deelnemers aan de workshop samen analyseren hoe ze het ‘projectgestuurd onderwijs’ het best in hun eigen lespraktijk zouden kunnen inzetten en welke voor- en nadelen dit met zich mee zou (kunnen) brengen.

Onze studie focust op de perceptie van klanken van het Nederlands door Franstalige niversiteitsstudenten. In dit onderzoek stonden twee hoofdvragen centraal: (i) Kunnen die Franstalige leerders de klanken van het Nederlands correct discrimineren? (ii) Welke factoren kunnen die perceptie beïnvloeden? Hiervoor analyseerde ik zowel de invloed van algemene factoren in verband met het (taal)leerproces – zoals individuele kenmerken, motivatie, taalangst, kennis van verschillende talen, leeftijd van eerste contact met het Nederlands, enz. – als de invloed van factoren in verband met muziek, namelijk muzikale aanleg en muzikale praktijk. De resultaten laten zien dat de Franstalige universiteitsstudenten de klanken van het Nederlands in het algemeen correct discrimineren. Deze perceptie wordt positief beïnvloed door een hoge motivatie voor het Nederlands, door een vroegtijdig contact met het Nederlands, door de kennis van andere vreemde talen, maar ook door muzikale factoren. Zo lijkt dat muzikale aanleg en muzikale praktijk de perceptie van het Nederlands beïnvloeden, en dat die invloed groter is als de leerder geen gebruik kan maken van andere factoren (zoals een hoge motivatie of een vroegtijdig contact met het Nederlands).
