Effects of three constant temperatures (15, 25, and 35 °C) on development and reproduction of Orius laevigatus(Fieber) and O. albidipennis(Reuter) (Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) and on their predation activity against the western flower thrips Frankliniella occidentalis(Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) were investigated in the laboratory. Small rooted plants of Spanish pepper (Capsicum annuumL. cv. ‘Creta’, long red) served as oviposition substrate and moisture source. Survival of eggs and nymphs of both species was high at 25 and 35 °C. At 15 °C, none of the eggs of O. albidipennishatched and the number of nymphs completing the immature stage was extremely low. Developmental time of nymphs was not significantly different between species at 15 °C, but at 25 and 35 °C nymphs of O. laevigatustook significantly longer to develop than those of O. albidipennis. Females of O. albidipennislived longer than those of O. laevigatusat 15 and 35 °C, but no differences were observed at 25 °C. Fecundity of O. albidipenniswas greatly reduced at 15 °C, whereas a temperature of 35 °C was close to the upper reproduction threshold of O. laevigatus. Fecundity was highest at 25 °C for both species. At 15 °C, the intrinsic rate of increase (rm) reached a minimum for both species. For O. albidipennis, the rm‐value increased with temperature (0.121 at 25 °C and 0.202 at 35 °C), whereas for O. laevigatusit peaked at 25 °C (0.105) but decreased at 35 °C (0.051). At 15 and 25 °C, adults of O. laevigatusconsumed more F. occidentalisadults during their total lifespan than those of O. albidipennis, but the latter showed a better predation activity at 35 °C; in all treatments, however, adults of O. laevigatusconsumed more prey per day than did those of O. albidipennis. The performance of both anthocorids at the different temperatures is discussed in relation to their practical use in integrated pest control programmes.

Abstract: A laboratory test method was developed to evaluate the pesticide toxicity on the predatory bugOrius laevigatus (Fieber). Newly hatched first-instar nymphs ofO. laevigatus were exposed to spray deposits of pesticides that were sprayed on the glass plates of a drum cell at the manufacturer’s recommended maximum dosage. Nymphal mortality and oviposition of surviving adults were recorded. Test results of various (31) commonly used pesticides (insecticides, insecticides/acaricides, acaricides and fungicides) are presented and discussed in accord with the classification of the IOBC/WPRS Working Group ”Pesticides and Beneficial Organisms”. Most fungicides had no toxic effect on nymphal development and egg-laying of surviving adults. The acaricides tested had variable toxicity on the predatory bug, while some insect growth regulators, such as the benzoylphenyl urea were very toxic. Otherwise, the ecdysone agonist tebufenozide and azadirachtin were not harmful for nymphal development and oviposition

Abstract: The predatory bugsOrius insidiosus andOrius albidipennis are potential candidates for biocontrol of the thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis. Laboratory experiments showed thatO. albidipennis lays significantly more eggs thanO. insidiosus while its life cycle is shorter. As more eggs are laid byO. albidipennis in the beginning of the oviposition cycle, this anthocorid may be considered as the better biocontrol agent.

Abstract: The effect of various feeding intervals on reproduction and longevity of the predatory bugPodisus sagitta (Fabricius) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was studied in the laboratory. Isolated pairs of adult bugs were given moisture in excess and were fed 1 seventh-instar larva of the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella (L.), with a mean weight of 90 mg every 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 days. Reproduction ofP. sagitta reflected well the feeding intervals. Females fed at increasing time intervals reduced reproductive outputs by decreasing oviposition frequency and size of egg batches. Predators fed every 21 days produced a mean of only 1.0 egg per day in comparison with 9.9 eggs per day for females fed daily. Longevity of females fed daily was 110.7 days; females fed less frequently tended to live longer, with a maximum mean longevity of 217.5 days for females fed every 14 days. No cannibalism among adults was observed, but females were occasionally seen to feed on their own eggs. Availability of moisture was found to be essential for the predators to survive during periods of low food supplies. These findings are discussed in relation to the predator's adaptation strategies in conditions of prey scarcity.

Abstract: A diet based on bovine meat was evaluated as an alternative food source for rearing the predatory bugsPodisus maculiventris (Say) andPodisus sagitta (Fabricius). Thus far, 7 and 5 continuous generations of the respective species have been reared on this diet. In comparison to rearing on larvae of the greater wax moth,Galleria mellonella (L.), however, nymphal development was prolonged with 15–40% and adult weights were lower, reaching 72–82% of the control weights. Fecundity of females reared on the meat diet was reduced to about 1/3–1/2 of that of the control, but egg weight and egg fertility were comparable with those in cultures fed live prey. Results obtained for laboratory rearing on this medium were generally better forP. maculiventris than forP. sagitta.

The susceptibility of the predatory bugOrius laevigatus(Fieber) to the insect growth regulators diflubenzuron, pyriproxyfen, the nitroguanidine insecticide imidacloprid and the thiourea compound diafenthiuron was investigated in the laboratory. Fifth-instar nymphs were exposed to formulated materials of each compound and adults were exposed to formulated materials of diafenthiuron and imidacloprid. In each case, exposure via ingestion and residual contact was tested. Pyriproxyfen was harmless toO. laevigatusnymphs by both ways of exposure. The respective LC50-values of diflubenzuron via ingestion and residual contact were 229.9 and 391.1 mg a.i./l. Diafenthiuron did not cause significant mortality to fifth-instar nymphs and adults via ingestion but was toxic by residual contact with LC50-values of 329.4 mg a.i./l and 125.9 mg a.i./l for nymphs and adults respectively. Imidacloprid proved to be the most toxic compound with LC50-values of 1.1 and 0.04 mg a.i./l for nymphs and 2.1 and 0.3 mg a.i./l for adults, via ingestion and residual contact, respectively. The results suggest that use of pyriproxyfen in an integrated pest management programme will not cause any problems but that imidacloprid, and to a lesser extent, also diflubenzuron and diafenthiuron could be harmful to the predator.
