2. Assignment of Grammatical Functions in French Relative Clauses.

Reports three studies of comprehension of French subject relative clauses and two forms of object relative clauses. The first tested the hypothesis that competition between noun phrases, memory load, and perspective maintenance determine difficulty of role assignment in reversible relative clauses; others compared subject relatives and inverted object relatives, with several cues varied to evaluate effect on role assignment. 4. Morphosyntactic regularities in retracing phenomena in the speech of second language learners of French

Abstract

Corpus studies have shown that native speakers’ spontaneous speech contains disfluencies, such as pauses, filled pauses, and various forms of retracing (Candéa 2000, Blanche-Benveniste 2010). Such behaviour is accounted for by the cognitive load required in working memory for the activation of words and the processing of sentences in real time (Levelt 1989). Unsurprisingly, similar phenomena characterize the spontaneous speech of L2 learners, who, depending on their level of proficiency, produce them at significantly higher rates than native speakers (Towell et al. 1996, Temple 2000, Hilton 2014). Research in this domain has usually been linked to the establishment of quantifiable, objective, and reliable temporal measures correlated with the perception of fluency (Lennon 1990, Freed 2000). Tavakoli & Skehan (2005) distinguish three types of fluency: speed fluency, concerned with the rate of speech, breakdown fluency, concerned with silent and filled pauses, and repair fluency, concerned with repairs. Among the latter, Olynyk et al. (1990) establish a distinction between progressive repairs (repeats, but also fillers) that are not necessarily detrimental to fluency as they allow native speakers and highly proficient L2 learners to avoid silent pauses within utterances, and regressive repairs

Abstract

L’analyse des emplois prépositionnels et des emplois conjonctifs d’ “excepté”, de “sauf” et d’ “hormis” permet d’envisager les trois prépositions/conjonctions comme le pivot d’un binôme, comme la plaque tournante d’une structure bipolaire. Placées au milieu du binôme, ces prépositions sont forcées par leur sémantisme originaire dûment métaphorisé de jouer le rôle de marqueurs d’inconséquence systématique entre l’élément se trouvant à leur gauche et celui qui se trouve à leur droite. L’opposition qui surgit entre les deux éléments n’est donc pas une incompatibilité naturelle, intrinsèque, mais extrinsèque, induite. Dans la plupart des cas (emplois limitatifs), cette opposition prend la forme d’un rapport entre une « classe » et le « membre (soustrait) de la classe », ou bien entre un « tout » et une « partie » ; dans d’autres (emplois exceptifs), cette opposition se manifeste au contraire comme une attaque de front portée par un « tout » à un autre « tout ». De plus, l’inconséquence induite mise en place par la préposition/conjonction paraît, en principe, tout à fait insurmontable. Dans l’assertion « les écureuils vivent partout, sauf en Australie » (que l’on peut expliciter par « Les écureuils vivent partout, sauf [qu’ils ne vivent pas] en Australie »), la préposition semble en effet capable d’impliquer le prédicat principal avec signe inverti, et de bâtir sur une telle implication une sorte de sous énoncé qui, à la rigueur, est totalement inconséquent avec celui qui le précède (si « les écureuils ne vivent pas en Australie », le fait qu’ils « vivent partout » est faux). Néanmoins, l’analyse montre qu’alors que certaines de ces oppositions peuvent enfin être dépassées, d’autres ne le peuvent pas. C’est, respectivement, le cas des relations limitatives et des relations exceptives. La relation limitative, impliquant le rapport « tout » - « partie », permet de résoudre le conflit dans les termes d’une somme algébrique entre deux sous énoncés pourvus de différent poids informatif et de signe contraire. Les valeurs numériques des termes de la somme étant déséquilibrées, le résultat est toujours autre que zéro. La relation exceptive, au contraire, qui n’implique pas le rapport « tout » - « partie », n’est pas capable de résoudre le conflit entre deux sous énoncés pourvus du même poids informatif et en même temps de signe contraire : les valeurs numériques des termes de la somme étant symétriques et égales, le résultat sera toujours équivalent à zéro.

Abstract

Clients of IBM Netherlands, a subsidiary company of IBM, have been interviewed on their preferences concerning the business proposals IBM Netherlands provides. Next to particular questions, selection and reading tasks were performed. Some effects of the structure of proposals on information selection, and of the use of style variants in parts of the proposals were found. A document indicating its structure on the appropriate places is easier to access than a document with less indications, although this is not recognised by participants themselves; the use of a persuasive style in business proposals is evaluated negatively. Because little is known about experienced readers in a business context, these and additional results of the research are valuable. The results show, moreover, that 'reading to assess' may involve two distinct reading goals: 'reading to assess approval' and 'reading to assess opinion', leading to different reading strategies.

Abstract

The aim of ESCODD, a European Commission funded Concerted Action, is to improve the precision and accuracy of methods for measuring 8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine (8-oxoGua) or the nucleoside (8-oxodG). On two occasions, participating laboratories received samples of different concentrations of 8-oxodG for analysis. About half the results returned (for 8-oxodG) were within 20% of the median values. Coefficients of variation (for three identical samples) were commonly around 10%. A sample of calf thymus DNA was sent, dry, to all laboratories. Analysis of 8-oxoGua/8-oxodG in this sample was a test of hydrolysis methods. Almost half the reported results were within 20% of the median value, and half obtained a CVof less than 10%. In order to test sensitivity, as well as precision, DNA was treated with photosensitiser and light to introduce increasing amounts of 8-oxoGua and samples were sent to members. Median values calculated from all returned results were 45.6 (untreated), 53.9, 60.4 and 65.6 8-oxoGua/10(6) Gua; only seven laboratories detected the increase over the whole range, while all but one detected a dose response over two concentration intervals. Results in this trial reflect a continuing improvement in precision and accuracy. The next challenge will be the analysis of 8-oxodG in DNA isolated from cells or tissue, where the concentration is much lower than in calf thymus DNA.

30. Assessing improvement in longer texts: Can we trust subjective judgments?

Abstract

This paper tackles the question how one can assess the extent to which a longer text has been improved, when a significant number of modifications are involved compared to the original version. After considering various possible solutions to this problem, we test a common procedure used to measure the readability of texts: subjective judgments. Is this procedure also a reliable one for measuring the extent to which longer texts have been improved? To try to answer this question we conducted a case study. Forty-eight participants read, evaluated, used, and finally reevaluated one of two versions of an official brochure made by the und for Occupational Accidents o inform victims of work-related accidents about their rights. Results show that the modified version is more favorably evaluated than the original one, but that the advantage of the modified version with respect to comprehensibility is a lot smaller. In addition, actual use of the modified text seemed to reduce the advantage it initially had with respect to its favorable evaluation.

40. Uncovering discourse structure in program summaries

Abstract

We have been analysing systematic differences between the summaries of computer programs produced by two groups of students. Each group has been exposed to one of two visual programming languages with different underlying paradigms: control flow, and data flow. The study builds on Pennington's approach to information types in program summaries, developing a slightly more ramified set of information types. Using this framework, we gathered, annotated and analysed a small corpus of 80 summaries. A simple, covering set of discourse relations emerges from the data, by co-classifying subsets of the information types, and charting their patterns in the summaries. The resulting characterisation of the groups' discourses can be used to show that control flow subjects exhibit relatively unvaried structure in their summaries, compared with data flow subjects.
