19. Dislocation structures in the bands of localised cyclic plastic strain in austenitic 316L and austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steels

Abstract

Dislocation structures in bands corresponding to cyclic strain localisation have been studied in two types of stainless steels, single phase austenitic 316L steel and two-phase austenitic-ferritic duplex steel. Dislocation structures are documented in thin foils oriented approximately perpendicular to the active slip plane of individual grains and parallel to the primary Burgers vector. Persistent slip bands, with the structure more or less reminiscent of the well-known ladder structure, were found in austenitic grains of both steels. These bands can be correlated with the distinct surface relief consisting of extrusions, intrusions and shallow surface cracks in austenitic phase. No clear features which can prove the existence of the persistent Lu¨ders bands in austenitic grains were found. The distribution of the wall and labyrinth structure embedded in the matrix structure in ferritic grains, which was proposed to be responsible for the localisation of the cyclic strain, however, does not correspond to the distribution of the distinct surface slip lines on the surface.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Cyclic tests performed in the temperature range 300–773 K on duplex stainless steel DIN 1.4460 show that the cyclic stress–strain behaviour of this steel is strongly temperature dependent. At 300 and 473 K an almost constant peak tensile stress stage, is followed by a slight softening that continues up to failure in the case of 300 K, but by a secondary hardening at 473 K. Pronounced initial cyclic hardening followed by secondary hardening was the main feature of the temperature range between 573 and 723 K. At 773 K, after a weak hardening stage, a strong softening continues up to failure. The mechanical behaviour and the evolution of the microstructure were analysed, and the internal and the effective stresses were studied. It was found that the internal stress is responsible for the strong hardening that occurs in the intermediate temperature range and for the softening at 773 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The application of previously published equations describing the dependence of proof stress on the nitrogen content of austenitic stainless steels has been validated and also extended to higher nitrogen contents in an experimental study of the mechanical property–structure relationships in Rex 734 steel. The proof stress is increased by nitrogen alloying through a combination of solid-solution hardening and a grain-size effect. The effective grain size of these steels is influenced by the nitrogen content through changes in stacking-fault energy, which Increases the density of twinning. In the analysis of tensile test data this effect appears as an increase in the grain-size coefficient of the Hall–Petch equation with increasing nitrogen concentration. Compression–tension low-cycle fatigue properties are similarly enhanced by a combination of nitrogen in solid solution and the influence of nitrogen on stacking-fault energy. An increase in the extent of planar slip is observed with increasing nitrogen content, and is most pronounced at low levels of fatigue strain. The increase in fatigue life observed at the strain levels examined reaches a limit at about 0·12 wt-%N both in AISI 316 grade steels and in Rex 734.MST/453

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents the work undertaken as a benchmark on fracture micromechanisms. A systematic investigation of the nature and position of cleavage intiating sites has been carried out on selected specimens of an ASTM A508 C1.3 steel by seven laboratories. Observations were carried out on the three different kinds of specimens, i.e. Charpy V-Notch, Compact Tension and Notched Tensile specimens, at different testing temperatures in the ductile-to-brittle (DBT) range. Participants were asked to follow a proposed methodology to determine both the main cleavage triggering site and its location for the determination of the cleavage initiating site as far as CVN and CT specimens were concerned. For NT specimens, the presence of a ductile damage zone with debonded inclusions only enabled participats to agree on the mesoscopic scale.
