Abstract

Background: Rabies is one of the fatal diseases which is primarily a vaccine-preventable zoonotic disease transmitted to man usually by bites or licks of rabid animals. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the compliance and health-seeking behavior of the beneficiaries attending anti-rabies vaccination out patient department (OPD) of a tertiary care hospital along with the out-of-pocket expenditure required for vaccination. Materials and Methods: A longitudinal study was conducted in the anti-rabies vaccination (ARV) OPD of a tertiary care hospital in India. A total of 149 animal bite victims were included in the study. The beneficiaries coming for first and second doses in 1 month for Anti-Rabies vaccine were enrolled in the study and followed telephonically for 1 month for compliance with the ARV vaccines. Results: The median age of the study participants was 32 years ranging from 4 to 75 years. 73.8% were males, while 26.2% were females. A total of 26.84% did not follow the initial wound management protocol and the mean delay in seeking medical care was 22 ± 4.6 h. A majority (86%) were dog bites and 32.6% were found to be noncompliant to the schedule of the vaccination. The average out-of pocket expenditure borne by beneficiaries for getting vaccination was Rs. 462 ($5.54). Conclusions: A large number of victims of animal bite were not compliant with the schedule, and many had not completed the schedule. The out of pocket expenditure of the victims was high.

11. Barriers in exclusive breastfeeding encountered by mothers in urban slum area of a metropolitan city

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding is considered the most important source of nutrients for the baby. But owing to ignorance, lack of education, and cultural norms, exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) is not done by majority of the mothers. Hence, this study is carried out to determine various barriers faced by the mothers that influenced their decision on EBF. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted among the mothers whose children were less than 1 year of age visiting a well-baby clinic and Immunisation OPD of Urban Health Centre catering to the Urban Slum of Malvani in the Metropolitan city of Mumbai. In-depth interviews (IDIs) were done with 17 participants from August to November 2022. Thematic analysis was conducted on the qualitative data obtained. Results: Four major themes were generated from the transcripts. They are –barriers and concerns faced by mothers to exclusively breastfeed, enablers/motivators, sources of knowledge regarding EBF, and breastfeeding practices. Various barriers faced by mothers were gaps in knowledge, maternal Illness, religious reasons, inadequate milk production, bias toward top feeds, lack of autonomy to take decisions, and cultural norms, while positive family support, good knowledge about breastfeeding, and a supportive home environment motivated mothers to exclusively breastfeed their infants. Sources of knowledge were identified to be doctors and health care workers, mothers/mothers-in-law, sisters, friends, and social media. Conclusions: There are various challenges as well as motivators identified for EBF. Barriers, such as gaps in knowledge, and the negative influence of social media can be improved upon by health education. Therefore, it is crucial to teach expectant mothers as well as families about breastfeeding. Additionally, we advise stepping up public health education initiatives to support breastfeeding.

31. Effect of Ca and Nb co-doping on optical and magnetoelectric properties of polycrystalline BiFeO3 ceramics.

Abstract

This study uses the sol–gel method to investigate the structurally induced optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of polycrystalline BiFeO3, BiFe0.95Nb0.05O3, and Bi0.95Ca0.05Fe1-xNbxO3 (x = 0, 0.04, 0.08) ceramics. According to X-ray diffraction patterns, all specimens largely crystallize in the R3c phase. The optical bandgap of the samples ranges from 1.81 to 1.71 eV. The leakage current density of BiFe0.95Nb0.05O3 and Bi0.95Ca0.05Fe0.92Nb0.08O3 is 1.99 × 10–8 A/cm2 and 2.09 × 10− 9 A/cm2 at 1 kV/cm, which is relatively lower than the current density of the other samples. BiFe0.95Nb0.05O3 and Bi0.95Ca0.05Fe0.92Nb0.08O3 showed saturated P-E loops with energy storage densities of 0.0106 J/cm3 and 0.0125 J/cm3, respectively. Among the samples, Bi0.95Ca0.05Fe0.92Nb0.08O3 exhibits relatively higher ferroelectric polarization (Pmax = 1.820 μC/cm2), magnetoelectric coupling (0.305 V/Oe cm), and reasonable maximum magnetization (0.325 emu/g) compared to the other samples. and can serve as a promising candidate for memory storage and photovoltaic applications.
