Abstract

This paper, together with a preceding paper, questions the so-called 'LSND anomaly': a 3.8 sigma excess of antielectronneutrino interactions over standard backgrounds, observed by the LSND Collaboration in a beam dump experiment with 800 MeV protons. That excess has been interpreted as evidence for the antimuonneutrino to antielectronneutrino oscillation in the \Deltam2 range from 0.2 eV2 to 2 eV2. Such a \Deltam2 range is incompatible with the widely accepted model of oscillations between three light neutrino species and would require the existence of at least one light 'sterile' neutrino. In a preceding paper, it was concluded that the estimates of standard backgrounds must be significantly increased. In this paper, the LSND Collaboration's estimate of the number of antielectronneutrino interactions followed by neutron capture, and of its error, is questioned. The overall conclusion is that the significance of the 'LSND anomaly' is not larger than 2.3 sigma., Comment: 30 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

The paper CERN-PH-EP-2009-015 (arXiv:0903.4762) by A. Bagulya et al. violates standards of quality of work and scientific ethics on several counts. The paper contains assertions that contradict established detector physics. The paper falls short of proving the correctness of the authors' concepts and results. The paper ignores or quotes misleadingly pertinent published work. The paper ignores the fact that the authors' concepts and results have already been shown wrong in the published literature. Abstract

A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, d2σπ+/d p dΩ, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210 000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

A precision measurement of the double-differential production cross-section, ${{d^2 \sigma^{\pi^+}}}/{{d p d\Omega}}$, for pions of positive charge, performed in the HARP experiment is presented. The incident particles are protons of 12.9 GeV/c momentum impinging on an aluminium target of 5% nuclear interaction length. The measurement of this cross-section has a direct application to the calculation of the neutrino flux of the K2K experiment. After cuts, 210000 secondary tracks reconstructed in the forward spectrometer were used in this analysis. The results are given for secondaries within a momentum range from 0.75 GeV/c to 6.5 GeV/c, and within an angular range from 30 mrad to 210 mrad. The absolute normalization was performed using prescaled beam triggers counting protons on target. The overall scale of the cross-section is known to better than 6%, while the average point-to-point error is 8.2%., Comment: 45 pages, 31 figures

Abstract

This paper, together with a subsequent paper, questions the so-called 'LSND anomaly': a 3.8 {\sigma} excess of anti-electronneutrino interactions over standard backgrounds, observed by the LSND Collaboration in a beam dump experiment with 800 MeV protons. That excess has been interpreted as evidence for the anti-muonneutrino{\to} anti-electronneutrino oscillation in the {\Delta}m2 range from 0.2 eV2 to 2 eV2. Such a {\Delta}m2 range is incompatible with the widely accepted model of oscillations between three light neutrino species and would require the existence of at least one light 'sterile' neutrino. In this paper, new data on pion production by protons on nuclei are presented, and four decades old data on pion production by neutrons on nuclei are recalled, that together increase significantly the estimates of standard backgrounds in the LSND experiment, and decrease the significance of the 'LSND anomaly' from 3.8 {\sigma} to 2.9 {\sigma}. In a subsequent paper, in addition the LSND Collaboration's data analysis will be questioned, rendering a further reduction of the significance of the 'LSND anomaly'., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

Apart from the electric field strength, the drift velocity depends on gas pressure and temperature, on the gas composition and on possible gas impurities. We show that the relevant gas temperature, while uniform across the TPC volume, depends significantly on the temperature and flow rate of fresh gas. We present the correction algorithms for changes of pressure and temperature, and the precise measurement of the electron drift velocity in the HARP TPC.

Abstract

In the T9 beam line, the beam instrumentation does not permit the separation of electrons from pions, except for the 1:5, 3 and 5 GeV/c beam momenta. For beam momenta of 8 GeV/c or higher, the flux of beam electrons must be subtracted from the flux of pion-like particles incident on the target in order to obtain correct pion interaction cross-sections. In this memo, data from the beam instrumentation and the electron-identifier in `empty-target' runs are analysed in order to determine the fraction of electrons incident on the target, in the pion beams from 1.5 to 15 GeV/c.

Abstract

In the T9 beam line, the beam instrumentation does not permit the separation of pions from muons. For a correct pion interaction cross-section, the flux of beam muons must be subtracted from the flux of pion-like particles incident on the target. In this memo, data from the beam instrumentation and the beam-muon identifier in 'empty-target' runs are analyzed in order to measure the fraction of beam muons incident on the target, in the pion beams from 3 to 15 GeV/c.

Ammosov et al.", and show 26 of them to be wrong, or inappropriate, or without substance.

Abstract

This `Second Addendum to the HARP WhiteBook' was prompted by the serious flaws in the first physics paper on `large-angle' pion production that has been published by `official' HARP, in defiance of strong criticism at various levels. Abstract

In this Addendum to the HARP WhiteBook, gross contradictions are discussed between (i) the 2006 HARP Status Report to the SPSC, (ii) the HARP Technical Paper, (iii) the `Rebuttal' of our `Comments' on the HARP Technical Paper, and (iv) the IEEE Paper on the RPC performance, all of which were published within three months only. It is shown that the published TPC pT resolution of ~30% at pT=1Â GeV/c, the published intrinsic RPC time resolution of ~140Â ps, and the published overall time resolution of 305Â ps for pion tracks cannot co-exist, and thus cannot be part of a coherent physics analysis.

Abstract

In the HARP TPC, the specific ionization dE/dx depends critically on the pad equalization, which in turn depends on the crosstalk correction. We discuss the TPC pad equalization algorithm and its performance in terms of average and resolution of dE/dx of negative pions with an average active track length of 300 mm. The observed dE/dx of pions and protons agrees satisfactorily with the theoretical expectation, the resolution for a minimum-ionizing track length of 300 mm is 16%.

Abstract

For the bias-free pT reconstruction of tracks in the HARP TPC, especially of helical tracks with small pT, and for optimum resolution and charge separation, our `Generalized Least Squares Fit' is the best algorithm currently available. We present an efficient implementation of this fit of a helical track, based on the TOPAZ parametrization. Apart from the fast convergence in typically three iterations, our fit allows for change of charge sign in the search for minimum Chi2, which permits optimum charge separation capability. For typical HARP TPC coordinate errors, our fit achieves a 12% better pT resolution than obtained with the original `Chernov-Ososkov' circle fit, and by a factor of two smaller charge misidentification probability at pT= 15 GeV/c.
