For many fans, metal was visual before it was aural. This book explores the visual dimensions of metal music from the specific socio-historic, geographic, and political positionality of Latin America and the Caribbean where this visual register allows creators and consumers to engage in four distinct strategies (i.e., seeing, revealing, inverting, and appearing) as part of what the authors have termed “extreme decolonial dialogues.” They support their position through a diverse lens that examines essential aspects of the visual dimensions of metal music: album artwork, clothing, film, sites, and activist practices.

The Peruvian sociologist Aníbal Quijano is widely considered to be a foundational figure of the decolonial perspective grounded in three basic concepts: coloniality, coloniality of power, and the colonial matrix of power. His decolonial theorizations of these three concepts have transformed the principles and assumptions of the very idea of knowledge, impacted the social sciences and humanities, and questioned the myth of rationality in natural sciences. The essays in this volume encompass nearly thirty years of Quijano's work, bringing them to an English-reading audience for the first time. This volume is not simply an introduction to Quijano's work; it achieves one of his unfulfilled goals: to write a book that contains his main hypotheses, concepts, and arguments. In this regard, the collection encourages a fuller understanding and broader implementation of the analyses and concepts that he developed over the course of his long career. Moreover, it demonstrates that the tools for reading and dismantling coloniality originated outside the academy in Latin America and the former Third World.

This book turns to the intellectual discourses that have emerged from India and Latin America, two outposts of the Global South, on the themes of imperialism, sovereignty, development, and socio-economic, racial and caste inequalities.It recovers the elided reflective traditions of thinkers, writers and activists from these peripheries and highlights the distinctive ideas, alliances and parallelisms in their works, as well as the manner in which they articulate liberatory paradigms which continue to have contemporary relevance. This collection explores the critical decolonial practices of applied linguistics researchers from Latin America and the Latin American diaspora, shedding light on the processes of epistemological decolonization and moving from a monolingual to a multilingual stance. The volume brings together participants from an AILA 2021 symposium, in which researchers reflected on applied linguistics in Latin America, and on the ways in which it brought concerns around social justice, the legacy of coloniality, and the role of monolingual English in education to the fore. Each chapter is composed of four parts: an autobiographical section written both in Spanish or Portuguese and in English followed by a reflection on the epistemological differences between versions; a discussion in English of the research project; a critical reflection on the epistemic practices and critical pedagogies enacted in the project; and the author(s)'understanding of the concept of decolonization and recommendations for further decolonizing the monolingual mindset of language teachers and learners. At once linguistic, epistemological, and political, the collection aims to diversify the concept of decoloniality itself and showcase other ways in which decolonial thought can be implemented in language education. In Rising Up, Living On, Catherine E. Walsh examines struggles for existence in societies deeply marked by the systemic violences and entwinements of coloniality, capitalism, Christianity, racism, gendering, heteropatriarchy, and the continual dispossession of bodies, land, knowledge, and life, while revealing practices that contest and live in the cracks of these matrices of power. Recent debates about the return of colonially looted heritage have furthered the discussions on decolonisation around the world, and have reignited questions surrounding “what is, and who owns, cultural heritage”. These discourses in the meaning, production and management of heritage – with a growing presence of themes that address “Latinities” – have gained greater visibility in Latin America and the Caribbean, as challenges surrounding cultural heritage arise more prominently worldwide. The attention on this region aims to contextualise the various theoretical, empirical, and critical perspectives in relation to the negotiation of decolonisation. Hence, this book focuses on the analysis of diverse modes of confronting the power underlying colonial heritage that can contribute to pushing boundaries and persuading changes in pre-established definitions of political thought and local identities. To this end, the chapters in this book focus on a wide scope of topics, ranging from the repatriation and restitution of cultural heritage, and diasporic movements to decolonial practices around monuments, museums, and education. In so doing, this volume challenges stereotypes that made Latin America and the Caribbean a space of mere reproducibility of external ideas, and instead provides a space to show current decolonial perspectives and practices developed in the region that will enrich the international debate on the contestation of colonial legacies and decolonisation of cultural heritage.

In Translating Blackness Lorgia García Peña considers Black Latinidad in a global perspective in order to chart colonialism as an ongoing sociopolitical force. Drawing from archives and cultural productions from the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe, García Peña argues that Black Latinidad is a social, cultural, and political formation—rather than solely a site of identity—through which we can understand both oppression and resistance. She takes up the intellectual and political genealogy of Black Latinidad in the works of Frederick Douglass, Gregorio Luperón, and Arthur Schomburg. She also considers the lives of Black Latina women living in the diaspora, such as Black Dominicana guerrillas who migrated throughout the diaspora after the 1965 civil war and Black immigrant and second-generation women like Mercedes Frías and Milagros Guzmán organizing in Italy with other oppressed communities. In demonstrating that analyses of Black Latinidad must include Latinx people and cultures throughout the diaspora, García Peña shows how the vaivén—or, coming and going—at the heart of migrant life reveals that the nation is not a sufficient rubric from which to understand human lived experiences.

This translation of Rita Segato's seminal book La crítica de la colonialidad en ocho ensayos offers an anthropological and critical perspective on the coloniality of power as theorized by the Peruvian thinker Aníbal Quijano.Segato begins with an overview of Quijano's conceptual framework, emphasizing the power and richness of his theory and its relevance to a range of fields. Each of the seven subsequent chapters presents a scenario in which a persistent colonial structure or form of subjectivity can be identified. These essays address urgent issues of gender, sexuality, race and racism, and indigenous forms of life. They set the decolonial perspective to work, and are connected by two central preoccupations: the critical analysis of coloniality and the effort to reimagine anthropology as'responsive anthropology,'a practice at once answerable and useful to the communities previously regarded as the'objects'of ethnographic thought.The Critique of the Coloniality makes important and original contributions to our understanding of colonial and decolonial processes, drawing on the author's experience of feminist and antiracist movements and struggles for indigenous and human rights. This book is above all a commitment to encounter. Is the research result of a Working Group (Grupo de Trabajo) of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), which brings together people who study and research, but who, above all, carry out collective actions from social organizations to transform the reality of our continent. This character of thinking doing, or rather, of doing thinking, of the Grupo de Trabajo gives this text a peculiar cadence. A cadence that demands a collective and cooperative authorship. It is also a recovery of the struggles that precede us, the sutures of the loom of memory that patriarchal and colonial capitalism strives to pierce, and that is another of the powers of this book. The book invites to dismantle the patriarchal and colonial legacies embedded in the very foundations of hegemonic academic thought, and demonstrates the urgent need to understand this as a political task of the moment. In Planetary Longings eminent cultural theorist Mary Louise Pratt posits that the last decade of the twentieth century and the first decades of the twenty-first mark a turning point in the human and planetary condition. Examining the forces of modernity, neoliberalism, coloniality, and indigeneity in their pre- and postmillennial forms, Pratt reflects on the crisis of futurity that accompanies the millennial turn in relation to environmental disaster and to the new forms of thinking it has catalyzed. She turns to 1990s Latin American vernacular culture, literary fiction, and social movements, which simultaneously registered neoliberalism's devastating effects and pursued alternate ways of knowing and living. Tracing the workings of colonialism alongside the history of anticolonial struggles and Indigenous mobilizations in the Americas, Pratt analyzes indigeneity both as a key index of coloniality, neoliberal extraction, and ecological destruction, and as a source for alternative modes of thought and being. Ultimately, Pratt demonstrates that the changes on either side of the millennium have catalyzed new forms of world-making and knowledge-making in the face of an unknowable and catastrophic future.

Es urgente repensar sobre los nuevos principios ontológicos, epistemológicos y axiológicos de una propuesta educacional para nuestros pueblos. Una pedagogía que acompañe las pluralidades de voces y cosmovisiones que contribuyan a la formación de un sujeto con conciencia crítica que, a partir del reconocimiento y afirmación del otro, siente las bases para una nueva sociedad. Esta otra pedagogía procura cuestionar las imposiciones ideológicas y políticas de los centros hegemónicos del saber y de la colonialidad del poder, construyendo una epistemología educativa desde la experiencia de nuestros pueblos y sus saberes. Un aporte para la consolidación de una pedagogía que contribuye a la formación de un sujeto autónomo y crítico capaz de reaprender a pensar, sentir y actuar desde lo intercultural y decolonial para reconstruir, desde otros espacios y fisuras (grietas), nuevas formas y estilos de vida para abordar los desafíos de un mundo más allá de la lógica y del discurso moderno occidental.

The long-lasting effects of colonialism are still present throughout Latin America. Racism, political persecution, ethnic extermination and extreme capitalism are some salient examples. This new book explores how heavy metal music in the region has been used to critically challenge the historical legacy of colonialism and its present-day manifestations. Through extensive ethnographic research in Puerto Rico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Argentina, Varas-Díaz documents how metal music listeners and musicians engage in ‘extreme decolonial dialogues'as a strategy to challenge past and ongoing forms of oppression. This allows readers to see metal music in a different light and as a call for justice in Latin America. Heavy metal related scholarship has made strides in the past decade. Many books have aimed to explain its origins, uses and the social meanings ascribed to the music in a variety of contexts. For the most part, these have neglected to address the region of Latin America as an area of study. It represents a historical and sociological journey in Latin American heavy metal music through rich ethnographic engagements with performers, fans and scholars of music. Its central premise is the dialogic relationship amongst deep histories of coloniality, systematic oppression, entrenched inequalities and the expressive forms generated by ‘decolonial metal music'. The book also provides an exemplary and potentially iconic model of ethnomusicology and the anthropology of music. Most previous work on metal music in Latin America has relied on theoretical frameworks developed in the Global North, and is therefore limited in understanding the region through its particular history and experiences. There is no scholarship of heavy metal scholarship in the Latin American region that achieves the depth or breadth of analysis represented by this book. It provides a roadmap and a model for this emerging mode of musical analysis, by demonstrating how decolonial metal scholarship can be achieved. Academic readership for the book will come from multiple disciplines including cultural studies, musicology, ethnomusicology, sociology, anthropology, cultural geography, history and Latin American studies. It will be of interest to music studies programmes, as well as for methods courses on structurally informed social research. The book will also be of interest to those outside academic settings – accessibly written, with its concise reviews of historical and political-economic contexts, and its vivid storytelling, it will be of interest to consumers of the metal musical genre.

This is a collection of eleven chapters and an introduction that develop key arguments in decolonial feminism, particularly, the coloniality of gender, the critique of white and Eurocentric feminisms, the imbrication between gender, race, and colonialism, feminicides, and the coloniality of democracy and public institutions. The introduction addresses the path of decolonial feminism: from a new approach to understanding the relationship between gender as a category, race, and colonialism that combined U.S. Third World feminism and scholarship on coloniality and decoloniality to its exponential growth in the hands of activists and engaged scholars from Latin America and the Caribbean. Today, much of the literature on decolonial feminism in Latin America and the Caribbean remains unknown in the U.S. This anthology seeks to start remedying this problem with seven translations of work originally written in Spanish, and three essays originally written in English that address the fundamental concepts of decolonial feminism as well as its contributions to important contemporary political and intellectual debates.

In ¡Presente! Diana Taylor asks what it means to be physically and politically present in situations where it seems that nothing can be done. As much an act, a word, an attitude, a theoretical intervention, and a performance pedagogy, Taylor maps ¡presente! at work in scenarios ranging from conquest, through colonial enactments and resistance movements, to present moments of capitalist extractivism and forced migration in the Americas. ¡Presente!—present among, with, and to; a walking and talking with others; an ontological and epistemic reflection on presence and subjectivity as participatory and relational, founded on mutual recognition—requires rethinking and unlearning in ways that challenge colonial epistemologies. Showing how knowledge is not something to be harvested but a process of being, knowing, and acting with others, Taylor models a way for scholarship to be present in political struggles.

¿Cómo entender la unicidad entre cuerpo y memoria? ¿Qué lugar ocupan las prácticas de autocuidado y cocuidado en dicha relación?, y ¿a qué nos invita una lectura de esta relación desde la decolonialidad? Estas preguntas fueron las que motivaron y orientaron el desarrollo del presente libro, que busca articular las herramientas de interpretación provenientes de la matriz moderno-colonial con los dispositivos que incidieron en la configuración de la subjetividad, el cuerpo y la memoria en América Latina. Así, el texto realiza una propuesta pedagógica-decolonial que permite visibilizar sistemas de saberes ancestrales que han estado subalternizados por la lógica de la colonialidad. Los autores hacen explícita su intención de aportar a la transformación, transgresión y sanación de la memoria y los cuerpos, en un acto consciente por incidir en estructuras de dominación y dinámicas de exclusión, segregación y, por ende, de afectación tanto de los sujetos como de las colectividades.

As provocações de Insurgência e descolonialização analética da América Latina não sucumbem diante de relações marcadas pela colonialidade. Pelo contrário, descerra-se um horizonte de'coisas novas', pois, no solo sagrado e concreto da Ameríndia, de tantas resistências, insurgem-se contraposições, movimentos contra-hegemônicos críticos e utópicos atados a um processo latino-americano de uma cepa originária de pensamento e práxis libertárias. A insurgência combate, entre outras tantas camadas da colonialidade, a dominação dos saberes, e coloca-se na'linha de frente'do enfrentamento epistemológico imantada pela criatividade inesgotável dos povos da América Latina. A produção de um pensamento crítico-propositivo insurgente passa pela crítica ao irracionalismo do sistema e às profundas causas da vitimação dos povos colonizados, em processo dialético de libertação. A concretização de outra práxis, que reconheça o Outro a partir de sua presentação, materializa-se na negação da superioridade eurocêntrica e afirmação de uma nova eticidade, a saber, numa Ética da Libertação fundada na criticidade. Trata-se, então, de desconstruir efetivamente a dominação imposta e reconstruir, a partir da descoberta de vítimas, agora como protagonistas da transformação.

Este trabajo es un acercamiento a los estudios poscoloniales de la academia anglosajona y surasiática, a los estudios de la colonialidad/modernidad y teorías feministas poscoloniales.Es el resultado de una rigurosa investigación bibliográfica que tiene por objetivo describir la relación existente entre esas teorías y las teorías y críticas feministas que se desarrollan desde el tercer mundo global, poniendo atención a las propuestas del feminismo decolonial latinoamericano en contraposición al feminismo hegemónico occidental y eurocéntrico, que sugiere la construcción de un tercer feminismo.Este trabajo, es una indagación descriptiva que no aspira a agotar todas las temáticas de los feminismos poscoloniales y las propuestas de decolonización. Se centra en acercarse a conocer el impacto que ha tenido el desarrollo de los estudios poscoloniales y los estudios sobre la colonialidad en las propuestas feministas latinoamericanas, las cuales son ricas no sólo en las bases epistemológicas sobre las que se asientan sino también en su propuesta política de transformación.

La compilación Pedagogías decoloniales se nos presenta, una vez más, como un libro necesario y urgente en su nuevo tomo. En él Catherine Walsh da continuidad a su propuesta de pensar la relación entre pedagogía y de(s)colonialidad, y, tal como ya nos tiene acostumbradxs, recrea una mirada amplia, justa, comprometida, que permite aglutinar diferentes abordajes desde actores muy diversos, haciendo posible un tratamiento mixto en donde voces de académicxs activistas se conjugan a las voces de activistas comprometidxs con la producción de pensamientos. Contraviniendo lo que comunmente es entendido como el campo pedagógico, Walsh nos propone una lectura desde el grito, desde la grieta, desde la urgencia de este tiempo haciendo evidente que el ejercicio de pensar y hacer pedagogía Otra implica restaurar el vínculo entre pedagogía y resistencia, pedagogía y territorio, pedagogía y defensa de la vida, en fin, entre pedagogía y (re)existencia. La propuesta de una pedagogía viva de, por, para y desde la resistencia se hace evidente en la selección de textos y autorxs. Un libro en donde la experiencia y la voz colectiva predomina, en donde el ejercicio escritural surge de la reflexión del hacer, interviniendo la forma convencional de construcción de conocimientos. El presente volumen se encarga de superar las formas estrechas en que se tiende a pensar sobre la pedagogía y la descolonización. Siguiendo a los grandes maestros, Paulo Freire y Frantz Fanon, entre otros y otras, este texto propone a la descolonización como proceso y práctica de re-humanización frente a las estructuras materiales y simbólicas que asedian la humanidad de los seres humanos. En este sentido la pedagogía decolonial es parte intrínseca del discurso sobre la colonialidad y la de(s)colonialidad del ser, pero también conectada con el hacer, es decir, con las prácticas de desaprender y re-aprender tanto a nivel teórico, como artístico, como de acción política.

Contributing to the historiography of transnational and global transmission of ideas, Connections after Colonialism examines relations between Europe and Latin America during the tumultuous 1820s. In the Atlantic World, the 1820s was a decade marked by the rupture of colonial relations, the independence of Latin America, and the ever-widening chasm between the Old World and the New. Connections after Colonialism, edited by Matthew Brown and Gabriel Paquette, builds upon recent advances in the history of colonialism and imperialism by studying former colonies and metropoles through the same analytical lens, as part of an attempt to understand the complex connections—political, economic, intellectual, and cultural—between Europe and Latin America that survived the demise of empire. Historians are increasingly aware of the persistence of robust links between Europe and the new Latin American nations. This book focuses on connections both during the events culminating with independence and in subsequent years, a period strangely neglected in European and Latin American scholarship. Este libro busca cuestionar la idea de que existe un único campo de la memoria, un campo dicotómico, reducido al forcejeo entre memorias “oficiales y no oficiales”, entre organizaciones agonistas que le disputan la versión histórica y los olvidos a la memoria gubernativa. También busca mostrar cómo el campo de las memorias de las víctimas es enriquecido por otras posiciones, entre ellas, no solo las subalternas de los sin voz, sino las sub/alternas, que construyen un afuera de la disputa por el poder central, lo cual genera y deriva en poderes y prácticas culturales alternos. También señala cómo a estas memorias se suman las memorias reservadas, en reserva, a la espera de un momento específico para hacerse un lugar en el campo plural de las memorias. El libro inicia con un capítulo autobiográfico en clave de memoria sub/alterna, realiza una revisión conceptual de la concepción tradicional de la memoria y culmina con la exposición de estas categorías teóricas que ilustran otras posiciones y alternativas en el campo de la memoria. Aquí, no toda memoria que se sitúa aparentemente en una posición tiene garantías de permanecer en ella para siempre.
