Abstract

We tested independently the influences of increasing temperature and decreasing moisture on life history and physiological traits in the arthropod Armadillidium vulgare. Both increasing temperature and decreasing moisture led reproductive success to decrease. While the density of immune cells decreased and the β-galactosidase activity increased with increasing temperature and decreasing moisture, which suggests a negative impact of these stressors on individual performance, increased temperature and decreased moisture affected differently the other biomarkers conjuring different underlying mechanisms depending on the stress applied. Our findings demonstrate overall a negative impact of high temperature and low moisture on woodlouse welfare. Changing temperature or moisture had slightly different effects, illustrating the need to test further the respective role of each of these key components of climate change on organisms to predict more reliably the future of our ecosystems.

Abstract

The ecological impact of invasive species is likely to be modulated by human-induced alterations in habitats, which represents another driver of biodiversity loss. We tested the effect of soundscape degradation on predation by the round goby Neogobius melanostomus, one of Europe’s “worst invasive species”. For this, we compared the relationship between per capita predation rate and prey density (i.e., the functional response) in the presence or absence of motorboat sounds. Unexpectedly, fish displayed a stronger functional response with additional noise, which could be explained by a higher mobility promoting encounters with prey. Our results suggest that anthropogenic noise is likely to exacerbate the impact of invasive species.

Abstract

Most birds incubate their eggs, which requires time and energy at the expense of other activities. Birds generally have two incubation strategies: biparental where both mates cooperate in incubating eggs, and uniparental where a single parent incubates. In harsh and unpredictable environments, incubation is challenging due to high energetic demands and variable resource availability. We studied the relationships between the incubation behaviour of sandpipers (genus Calidris) and two environmental variables: temperature and a proxy of primary productivity (i.e. NDVI). We investigated how these relationships vary between incubation strategies and across species among strategies. We also studied how the relationship between current temperature and incubation behaviour varies with previous day's temperature. We monitored the incubation behaviour of nine sandpiper species using thermologgers at 15 arctic sites between 2016 and 2019. We also used thermologgers to record the ground surface temperature at conspecific nest sites and extracted NDVI values from a remote sensing product. We found no relationship between either environmental variables and biparental incubation behaviour. Conversely, as ground-surface temperature increased, uniparental species decreased total duration of recesses (TDR) and mean duration of recesses (MDR), but increased number of recesses (NR). Moreover, small species showed stronger relationships with ground-surface temperature than large species. When all uniparental species were combined, an increase in NDVI was correlated with higher mean duration, total duration and number of recesses, but relationships varied widely across species. Finally, some uniparental species showed a lag effect with a higher nest attentiveness after a warm day while more recesses occurred after a cold day than was predicted based on current temperatures. Abstract

International audience; We used a large dataset of greater flamingo chicks banded and measured at Camargue, France, to verify the applicability of discriminant function analysis to sex this species. Males and females sexed genetically differed significantly in all of the morphological characters measured (body mass, tarsus and wing length), with males being significantly larger than females. Although the discriminant rate varied substantially from one year to another, we found that it increased with the sample size of genetically sexed individuals. Our results suggest that discriminant function analysis (DFA) does not provide an efficient tool to sex greater flamingo chicks as these relationship are highly variable across years, requiring the genetic determination of sex on a large number of individuals every year for calibrating the DFA and still providing an overall low accuracy in sex determination. Indeed, conditions at breeding seasons can vary between years and can be considered proximate causes affecting the correct discriminant rate. Like previous studies, we recommend caution in dealing with discriminant equations computed from small datasets, and our simulation suggests that 325 genetically sexed individuals are needed to obtain 80 % correctly classified greater flamingo chicks.

Abstract

Improvements in the biological control of agricultural pests require improvements in the phenotyping methods used by practitioners to select efficient biological control agent (BCA) populations in industrial rearing or field conditions. Consistent inter-individual variations in behaviour (i.e. animal personality) probably affect BCA efficiency, but have never been taken into account in the development of phenotyping methods, despite having characteristics useful for phenotyping: repeatable (by definition), often heritable, etc. We developed a video-tracking method targeting animal personality traits and evaluated the feasibility of its use for genetic improvement in the BCATrichogramma evanescens, by phenotyping 1,049 individuals from 24 isogenic lines. We found consistent individual variations in boldness, activity and exploration. Personality differences between the 24 isogenic lines suggested a genetic origin of the variations in activity and exploration (broad-sense heritability estimates of 0.06 to 0.11) and revealed a trade-off between exploration and fecundity.

Hence, incubating adults trade-off incubation and nest protection with foraging to meet their own needs. Parents can either cooperate to sustain this trade-off or incubate alone. The main cause of reproductive failure at this reproductive stage is predation and adults reduce this risk by keeping the nest location secret. Arctic sandpipers are interesting biological models to investigate parental care evolution as they may use several parental care strategies. The three main incubation strategies include both parents sharing incubation duties (“biparental”), one parent incubating alone (“uniparental”), or a flexible strategy with both uniparental and biparental incubation within a population (“mixed”). By monitoring the incubation behaviour in 714 nests of seven sandpiper species across 12 arctic sites, we studied the relationship between incubation strategy and nest predation. First, we described how the frequency of incubation recesses (NR), their mean duration (MDR), and the daily total duration of recesses (TDR) vary among strategies. Then, we examined how the relationship between the daily predation rate and these components of incubation behaviour varies across strategies using two complementary survival analysis. For uniparental and biparental species, the daily predation rate increased with the daily total duration of recesses and with the mean duration of recesses. In contrast, daily predation rate increased with the daily number of recesses for biparental species only. These patterns may be attributed to two independent mechanisms: cryptic incubating adults are more difficult to locate than unattended nests and adults departing the nest or feeding close to the nest can draw predators' attention. Abstract

National audience; Many thousands of carabid individuals exist in farm fields, in communities of carnivore and opportunistic (e.g. granivores) and obligate omnivore guilds. As carabids can eat a substantial amount of weed seeds they are considered as credible biocontrol agents for the regulation of weeds in arable fields. Some studies have suggested that “granivores” are more important biocontrol agents than obligate omnivorous species. Yet, in some instances, obligate omnivores are very abundant and appear to drive the predation of weeds leading some authors to question whether specialist natural enemies are better. Moreover, niche complementarity, facilitation and interference (i.e. intraguild predation), can occur in carabid communities and hinder the power of our prediction pest pest-control. Studying the foraging behaviour of obligatory and opportunistic omnivorous individuals and their sensitivity to biotic factors such as competition and predation would increase our understanding of predator interference, facilitation and niche complementarity in carabids communities and, hence, the predictability of predation. In this study we compared the foraging behaviour and weed consumption pattern of two common carabid species, one known as obligatory omnivore (Poecilus cupreus) and the other as a “granivore” (Harpalus affinis), for four species of seeds of weeds. Consumption was scored for 13h using no choice tests. The effect of biotic interactions, was also assessed by looking at the foraging behaviour of the two carabid species under 4 different experimental conditions: i) predation risk; ii-iii) intra- and interspecific competition; and, iv) control. Our results show that the consumption pattern of the two carabid species differs markedly. P. cupreus eat faster but express strong feeding preferences while H. affinis feed slowly but eat all species of seeds equally. Moreover, while the consumption pattern of P. cupreus remains stable between the experimental conditions, H. affinis change their behavior, eating more and more rapidly when faced with a risk of predation.

Abstract

Precopulatory mate guarding (PCMG) is frequently presented as a classic case of sexual conflict between partners. For instance, long-lasting PCMG is regarded as an adaptive male strategy to secure a female in a context of strong intrasexual competition, while females guarded for a long time are assumed to bear many costs. This assumption has been derived from guarding systems where females obviously resist males' attempts to initiate early guarding. However, females of some species such as the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex do not seem to possess adaptations to reduce PCMG duration, which remains to be explained from an evolutionary perspective. In this model organism for sexual conflict research, a male grasps a female several days before her sexual receptivity. Here we tested the hypothesis that G. pulex females might benefit from being passively transported by their partner during PCMG, whereas the male alone bears the costs of swimming while carrying his mate. We therefore compared the energetic states of paired and single individuals and found that, after 5 days of PCMG in controlled conditions, paired individuals contained more protein, lipid and glycogen reserves than single individuals in both sexes. Our results suggest that PCMG might be energetically beneficial not only to the female, but also to the male. We discuss overall fitness consequences of PCMG for both partners given the mutual benefits we highlighted here. We plead for a more precise estimation of the cost/benefit ratio for each sex to improve our understanding of how sexual conflict shapes guarding patterns.

Abstract

International audience; Animals foraging in the wild face a trade-off between staying safe (i.e. avoiding predation orstarvation) and the quality of the food. We therefore hypothesize that animals will modify their foodselection (choosiness) both under competition and predation risk, but that the direction and theamount of change in choosiness will depend on the level of risk they face.To test this hypothesis, the foraging behaviour of the carabid beetle, Harpalus affinis, was examinedunder 4 different experimental conditions: predation risk, intra- and interspecific competition and acontrol.Our results show that when foraging under the risk of predation or competition animals reduce theirchoosiness. We show that the effect of predation risk on choosiness is two times stronger than theeffect of intra- and interspecific food competition. Thus, H. affinis individuals are able to finely adjusttheir choosiness in response to the level of risk they face.
