We report JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) observations of the β Pic moving-group member, η Tel A, along with its brown dwarf binary companion, η Tel B. Following point-spread-function subtraction, we recover the spatially resolved flux from the debris disk around η Tel A, along with the position of the companion exterior to the disk. We present a new 5–26 μ m epoch of spectroscopy for the disk, in which we discover a 20 μ m silicate feature, and the first ever 11–21 μ m spectrum of η Tel B, which indicates a bare photosphere. We derive a new epoch of relative astrometry for the companion, extending the baseline of measurements to 25 yr, and find that it is currently located near the apocenter of an eccentric long-period orbit. The companion's orbit is close enough to the disk that it should significantly perturb the planetesimals within it, resulting in a detectable mid-IR pericenter glow and near alignment with the companion. Contrary to expectations, however, we find that the disk appears to be axisymmetric and potentially misaligned with the companion in the MIRI MRS data. We posit that this may be due to the presence of an additional, as-yet-undetected ∼0.7–30 M J planet orbiting interior to the disk, with a semimajor axis of ∼3–19 au. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fallback disk model is widely accepted to explain long-period neutron stars (NSs) that cannot be simulated by magnetic dipole radiation. However, there was no confirmed detection of disks from the newly discovered long-period pulsars GLEAM-X 162759.5-523504.3 and GPM J1839-10 and the slowest known isolated NS 1E 161348-5055. This might be because the disks have either been in a noninteracting/inactive state where their emission is too weak to be detected or have been disrupted. In this work, we conduct simulations to examine the lifetime of supernova fallback disks around isolated NSs. We assume that the disks' mass varies in a self-similar way, and their interaction with the NS occurs only in an interacting/active state. Our results reveal that nearly all the interacting lifetimes for the disks are shorter than 105 yr, while the existence lifetimes are considerably longer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Coronagraph Instrument will enable the polarimetric imaging of debris disks and inner dust belts in the optical and near-infrared wavelengths, in addition to the high-contrast polarimetric imaging and spectroscopy of exoplanets. The Coronagraph uses two Wollaston prisms to produce four orthogonally polarized images and is expected to measure the polarization fraction with measurement errors <3% per spatial resolution element. To simulate the polarization observations through the Hybrid Lyot Coronagraph (HLC) and Shaped Pupil Coronagraph (SPC), we model disk scattering, the coronagraphic point-response function, detector noise, speckles, jitter, and instrumental polarization and calculate the Stokes parameters. To illustrate the potential for discovery and a better understanding of known systems with both the HLC and SPC modes, we model the debris disks around Epsilon Eridani and HR 4796A, respectively. For Epsilon Eridani, using astrosilicates with 0.37 ± 0.01 as the peak input polarization fraction in one resolution element, we recover the peak disk polarization fraction of 0.33 ± 0.01. Similarly, for HR 4796A, for a peak input polarization fraction of 0.92 ± 0.01, we obtain the peak output polarization fraction as 0.80 ± 0.03. The MIRI Exoplanets Orbiting White dwarfs survey is a cycle 2 JWST program to search for exoplanets around dozens of nearby white dwarfs via infrared excess and direct imaging. In this Letter, we present the detection of mid-infrared excess at 18 and 21 μ m toward the bright ( V = 11.4) metal-polluted white dwarf WD 0310–688. The signal from a transiting planet can be diluted by astrophysical contamination. In the case of circumstellar debris disks, this contamination could start in the mid-infrared and vary as a function of wavelength, which would then change the observed transmission spectrum for any planet in the system. The MIRI/Low Resolution Spectrometer WASP-39b transmission spectrum shows an unexplained dip starting at ∼10 μ m that could be caused by astrophysical contamination. The spectral energy distribution displays excess flux at similar levels to that which are needed to create the dip in the transmission spectrum. In this Letter, we show that this dip is consistent with the presence of a bright circumstellar debris disk, at a distance of >2 au. We discuss how a circumstellar debris disk like that could affect the atmosphere of WASP-39b. We also show that even faint debris disks can be a source of contamination in MIRI exoplanet spectra.

Observations of debris disks offer important insights into the formation and evolution of planetary systems. Though M dwarfs make up approximately 80% of nearby stars, very few M dwarf debris disks have been studied in detail—making it unclear how or if the information gleaned from studying debris disks around more massive stars extends to the more abundant M dwarf systems. We report the first scattered-light detection of the debris disk around the M4 star Fomalhaut C using JWST's Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam; 3.6 and 4.4 μ m). This result adds to the prior sample of only four M dwarf debris disks with detections in scattered light and marks the latest spectral type and oldest star among them. The size and orientation of the disk in these data are generally consistent with the prior Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array submillimeter detection. Though no companions are identified, these data provide strong constraints on their presence—with sensitivity sufficient to recover sub-Saturn mass objects in the vicinity of the disk. This result illustrates the unique capability of JWST to uncover elusive M dwarf debris disks in scattered light and lays the groundwork for deeper studies of such objects in the 2–5 μ m regime.

Dynamically active planetary systems orbit a significant fraction of white dwarf stars. These stars often exhibit surface metals accreted from debris disks, which are detected through infrared excess or transiting structures. However, the full journey of a planetesimal from star-grazing orbit to final dissolution in the host star is poorly understood. Here, we report the discovery that the cool metal-polluted star WD 0816–310 has cannibalized heavy elements from a planetary body similar in size to Vesta, and where accretion and horizontal mixing processes have clearly been controlled by the stellar magnetic field. Our observations unveil periodic and synchronized variations in metal line strength and magnetic field intensity, implying a correlation between the local surface density of metals and the magnetic field structure. Specifically, the data point to a likely persistent concentration of metals near a magnetic pole. These findings demonstrate that magnetic fields may play a fundamental role in the final stages of exoplanetary bodies that are recycled into their white dwarf hosts.

We place lower limits on the obliquities between debris disks and their host stars for 31 systems by comparing their disk and stellar inclinations. While previous studies did not find evidence for misalignment, we identify six systems with minimum obliquities falling between ∼30°and 60°, indicating that debris disks can be significantly misaligned with their stars. These high-obliquity systems span a wide range of stellar parameters with spectral types K through A. Previous works have argued that stars with masses below 1.2 M ⊙ (spectral types of ∼F6) have magnetic fields strong enough to realign their rotation axes with the surrounding disk via magnetic warping; given that we observe high obliquities for relatively low-mass stars, magnetic warping alone is likely not responsible for the observed misalignments. Yet, chaotic accretion is expected to result in misalignments of ∼20° at most and cannot explain the larger obliquities found in this work. While it remains unclear how primordial misalignment might occur and what role it plays in determining the spin–orbit alignment of planets, future work expanding this sample is critical toward understanding the mechanisms that shape these high-obliquity systems. The faint CO gases in debris disks are easily dissolved into C by UV irradiation, while CO can be reformed via reactions with hydrogen. The abundance ratio of C/CO could thus be a probe of the amount of hydrogen in the debris disks. We conduct radiative transfer calculations with chemical reactions for debris disks. For a typical dust-to-gas mass ratio of debris disks, CO formation proceeds without the involvement of H2 because a small amount of dust grains makes H2 formation inefficient. We find that the CO to C number density ratio depends on a combination of n H Z 0.4 χ −1.1, where n H is the hydrogen nucleus number density, Z is the metallicity, and χ is the far-UV flux normalized by the Habing flux. Using an analytic formula for the CO number density, we give constraints on the amount of hydrogen and metallicity for debris disks. CO formation is accelerated by excited H2 when either the dust-to-gas mass ratio is increased or the energy barrier of chemisorption of hydrogen on the dust surface is decreased. This acceleration of CO formation occurs only when the shielding effects of CO are insignificant. In shielded regions, the CO fractions are almost independent of the parameters of dust grains. Ways of formation of azimuthal resonant patterns in circumstellar planetesimal disks with planets are considered. Our analytical estimates and massive numerical experiments show that the disk particles that initially reside in zones of low-order mean-motion resonances with the planet may eventually concentrate into potentially observable azimuthal patterns. The structuring process is rapid, usually taking 100 orbital periods of the planet. It is found that the relative number of particles that retain their resonant position increases with decreasing the mass parameter (the ratio of masses of the perturbing planet and the parent star), but a significant fraction of the particle population is always removed from the disk due to accretion of the particles onto the star and planet, as well as due to their transition to highly elongated and hyperbolic orbits. Expected radio images of azimuthally structured disks are constructed. In the considered models, azimuthal patterns associated with the and resonances are most clearly manifested; observational manifestations of the and resonances are also possible. Certain debris disks have nonaxisymmetric shapes in scattered light which are unexplained. The appearance of a disk depends on how its constituent Keplerian ellipses are arranged. The more the ellipses align apsidally, the more nonaxisymmetric the disk. Apsidal alignment is automatic for fragments released from a catastrophic collision between solid bodies. We synthesize scattered light images, and thermal emission images, of such giant impact debris. Depending on the viewing geometry, and if and how the initial apsidal alignment is perturbed, the remains of a giant impact can appear in scattered light as a one-sided or two-sided "fork," a lopsided "needle," or a set of "double wings." The last shape is difficult to reproduce in other scenarios involving gravitational forcing or gas drag, which do not align orbits as well. We compare our images with observations and offer a scorecard assessing whether the scattered light asymmetries in HD 15115, HD 32297, HD 61005, HD 111520, HD 106906, β Pic, and AU Mic are best explained by giant impacts, gravitational perturbations, or sculpting by the interstellar medium. The formation of planets like Earth is expected to conclude with a series of late-stage giant impacts that generate warm dusty debris, the most anticipated visible signpost of terrestrial planet formation in progress. While there is now evidence that Earth-sized terrestrial planets orbit a significant fraction of solar-type stars, the anticipated dusty debris signature of their formation is rarely detected. Here we discuss several ways in which our current ideas about terrestrial planet formation imply transport mechanisms capable of erasing the anticipated debris signature. A tenuous gas disk may be regenerated via takeout (i.e., the liberation of planetary atmospheres in giant impacts) or delivery (i.e., by asteroids and comets flung into the terrestrial planet region) at a level sufficient to remove the warm debris. The powerful stellar wind from a young star can also act, its delivered wind momentum producing a drag that removes warm debris. If such processes are efficient, terrestrial planets may assemble inconspicuously, with little publicity and hoopla accompanying their birth. Alternatively, the rarity of warm excesses may imply that terrestrial planets typically form very early, emerging fully formed from the nebular phase without undergoing late-stage giant impacts. In either case, the observable signposts of terrestrial planet formation appear more challenging to detect than previously assumed. We discuss observational tests of these ideas. Observations of proto-planetary disks, as well as theoretical modeling, suggest that in the late stages of accretion leading up to the formation of planetesimals, particles grew to pebbles the size of 1-mm to tens of cm, depending on the location and ambient conditions in the disk. That is the same size range that dominates the present-day comet and primitive asteroid mass loss. Meteoroids that size cause visible meteors on Earth. Here, we hypothesize that the size distribution and the physical and chemical properties of young meteoroid streams still contain information about the conditions in the solar nebula during these late stages of accretion towards planetesimal formation. If so, they constrain where long-period (Oort Cloud) comets, Jupiter-family (Scattered Disk Kuiper Belt) comets, and primitive asteroids (Asteroid Belt) formed. From video and visual observations of 47 young meteor showers, we find that freshly ejected meteoroids from long-period comets tend to have low bulk density and are distributed with equal surface area per log-mass interval (magnitude distribution index χ ∼ 1.85), suggesting gentle accretion conditions. Jupiter-family comets, on the other hand, mostly produce meteoroids twice as dense and distributed with a steeper χ ∼ 2.15 or even χ ∼ 2.5, which implies that those pebbles grew from particles fragmenting in a collisional cascade or by catastrophic collisions, respectively. Some primitive asteroids show χ > 2.5, with most mass in small particles, indicating an even more aggressive fragmentation by processes other than mutual collisions. Both comet populations contain an admixture of compact materials that are sometimes sodium-poor, but Jupiter-family comets show a higher percentage (∼8% on average) than long-period comet showers (∼4%) and a wider range of percentages among comets. While there are exceptions in both groups, the implication is that most long-period comets formed under gentle particle growth conditions, possibly near the 30 AU edge of the Trans Neptunian Disk, while most Jupiter family comets formed closer to the Sun where pebbles reached or passed the fragmentation barrier, and primitive asteroids formed in the region where the cores of the giant planets formed. This is possible if the Scattered Disk represents all objects scattered by Neptune during its migration, while the present-day outer Oort cloud formed only during and after the time of the planet instability, well after the Sun had moved away from sibling stars. • Meteoroids are the size of the pebbles that collapsed to planetesimals. • Long-period (Oort Cloud) comets often crumble into sizes indicative of gentle accretion. • Pebbles that grew to Jupiter-family comets reached or passed the fragmentation barrier. • Primitive asteroid pebbles aggressively fragmented with most mass at small sizes. • The Oort Cloud was populated later than the Scattered Disk of the Kuiper Belt. We present images of the Vega planetary debris disk obtained at 15.5, 23, and 25.5 μ m with the Mid-Infrared Instrument on JWST. The debris system is remarkably symmetric, smooth, and centered accurately on the star. There is a broad Kuiper-belt-analog ring at ∼80–170 au that coincides with the planetesimal belt detected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at 1.34 mm. The interior of the broad belt is filled with warm debris that shines most efficiently at mid-infrared, along with a shallow flux dip/gap at 60 au from the star. These qualitative characteristics argue against any Saturn-mass planets orbiting the star outside of about 10 au, assuming the unseen planet would be embedded in the very broad planetesimal disk from a few to hundreds of astronomical units. We find that the distribution of dust detected interior to the broad outer belt is consistent with grains being dragged inward by the Poynting–Robertson effect. Under the drag-dominated disk assumption, tighter constraints can be derived for planets in specific locations; for example, any planet shepherding the inner edge of the outer belt is likely to be less than six Earth masses. The disk surface brightness profile along with the available infrared photometry suggest a disk inner edge near ∼3−5 au, disconnected from the sub-astronomical-unit region that gives rise to the hot near-infrared excess. The gap between the hot, sub-astronomical-unit zone and the inner edge of the warm debris might be shepherded by a modest-mass, Neptune-size planet.

The most prominent of the IRAS debris disk systems, α Lyrae (Vega), at a distance of 7.7 pc, has been observed by both the NIRCam and MIRI instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. We present a provisory scattered-light detection of the Vega debris disk using deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) coronagraphy (PID 16666). At only 7.7 pc, Vega is immensely important in debris disk studies both for its prominence and also because it allows the highest physical resolution among all debris systems relative to temperature zones around the star. We employ the STIS coronagraph’s widest wedge position and classical reference differential imaging to achieve among the lowest surface-brightness sensitivities to date ( $\sim 4\,\mu {{\rm{Jy}}\,{\rm{arcsec}}}^{-2}$ ) at wide separations using 32 orbits in Cycle 29. We detect a halo extending from the inner edge of our effective inner working angle at 10.″5 out to the photon noise floor at 30″ (80–230 au). The face-on orientation of the system and the lack of a perfectly color-matched point-spread function star have posed significant challenges to the reductions, particularly regarding artifacts from the imperfect color matching. However, we find that a halo of small dust grains provides the best explanation for the observed signal. Unlike Fomalhaut (a close twin to Vega in luminosity, distance, and age), there is no clear distinction in scattered light between the parent planetesimal belt observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array and the extended dust halo. These HST observations complement JWST GTO Cycle 1 observations of the system with NIRCam and MIRI.

Debris disks, which are optically thin, dusty disks around main-sequence stars, are often found to have structures and/or asymmetries associated with planet–disk interactions. Debris disk morphologies can hence be used as probes for planets in these systems, which are unlikely to be detected with other current exoplanet detection methods. In this study we take a look at the very asymmetrical debris disk around HD 111520, which harbours several signs of perturbation such as a “fork”-like structure in the NW, as well as a 4° warp from the midplane on either side of the disk. We simulate the complicated disk morphology using the code REBOUND, with the goal of constraining the possible mass and orbit of the planet responsible for the observed structures. We find that an ∼1 M _jup , eccentric planet that is inclined relative to the disk and is orbiting outside the warp location is able to reproduce the majority of disk features including the warp, fork, and radial extent asymmetry. To create the surface brightness asymmetry, a second eccentric planet is required inside the disk inner edge (50 au), although we are unable to produce the 2:1 brightness asymmetry observed, suggesting that a second mechanism may be required. Our work demonstrates how debris disk morphologies alone can be used to learn more about the architecture and evolution of a system as a whole, and can provide planet constraints to determine potential targets for current/future instruments such as JWST/NIRCam and the Gemini Planet Imager 2.0.

The rotational mass loss has been realized to be a prevalent mechanism to produce low-speed debris near the asteroid, and the size composition of the asteroid’s surface regolith has been closely measured by in situ explorations. However, the full-scale evolution of the shedding debris has not been examined using the observed particle sizes, which may hold vital clues to the initial growth of an asteroid moonlet and help us to understand the general mechanisms that dominate the formation of asteroid systems. This paper presents our study on the cumulative evolution of the debris cloud formed by a rotationally unstable asteroid. A semianalytical model is developed to characterize the spatiotemporal evolution of the debris cloud posterior to a shedding event. Large-scale discrete element method (DEM) simulations are performed to quantify the clustering behavior of the debris particles in the mechanical environment near the asteroid. As a result, we found that the cumulation of a steady debris cloud is dominated by large pieces of debris, and the shedding particles follow a common migration trend, which fundamentally determines the mass distribution of the debris cloud. For the accretion analysis, we sketched the life cycle of a debris cluster and showed its dependency on particle size. The DEM simulations adopt physical parameters estimated from observations and asteroid missions. The results confirm that porous fluffy cluster structures can form shortly after a shedding event with magnitudes the same as the observed shedding activities. Measurements of these structures show that they themselves possess a certain strength and have the capacity to collisions to absorb dissociative particles that collide with them.

β Pictoris's well-studied debris disk and two known giant planets, in combination with the stability of the Hubble Space Telescope’s Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) (and now also JWST), offers a unique opportunity to test planet–disk interaction models and to observe recent planetesimal collisions. We present HST/STIS coronagraphic imaging from two new epochs of data taken between 2021 and 2023, complementing earlier data taken in 1997 and 2012. This data set enables a temporal comparison with the longest baseline and highest precision of any debris disk to date, with sensitivity to variations in temporal surface brightness of sub-percent levels in the midplane of the disk. While no localized changes in surface brightness are detected, which would be indicative of a recent planetesimal collision, there is a tentative brightening of the southeast side of the disk over the past decade. We link the constraints on surface brightness variations to dynamical models of the planetary system’s evolution and to the collisional history of planetesimals. Using a coupled collisional model and injection/recovery framework, we estimate sensitivity to expanding collisional debris down to a Ceres mass per progenitor in the most sensitive regions of the disk midplane. These results demonstrate the capabilities of long-baseline, temporal studies with HST (and also soon with JWST) for constraining the physical processes occurring within debris disks.

Modeling observations of the archetypal debris disk around β Pic, obtained in 2023 January with the MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrograph on board JWST, reveals significant differences compared with that obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. The bright 5–15 μ m continuum excess modeled using a ∼600 K black body has disappeared. The previously prominent 18 and 23 μ m crystalline forsterite emission features, arising from cold dust (∼100 K) in the Rayleigh limit, have disappeared and been replaced by very weak features arising from the hotter 500 K dust population. Finally, the shape of the 10 μ m silicate feature has changed, consistent with a shift in the temperature of the warm dust population from ∼300 to ∼500 K and an increase in the crystalline fraction of the warm, silicate dust. Stellar radiation pressure may have blown both the hot and the cold crystalline dust particles observed in the Spitzer spectra out of the planetary system during the intervening 20 yr between the Spitzer and JWST observations. These results indicate that the β Pic system has a dynamic circumstellar environment, and that periods of enhanced collisions can create large clouds of dust that sweep through the planetary system.

Epsilon Eridani is one of the first debris disk systems detected by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite. However, the system has thus far eluded detection in scattered light with no components having been directly imaged. Its similarity to a relatively young solar system combined with its proximity makes it an excellent candidate to further our understanding of planetary system evolution. We present a set of coronagraphic images taken using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph coronagraph on the Hubble Space Telescope at a small inner working angle to detect a predicted warm inner debris disk inside 1″. We used three different postprocessing approaches—nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), Karhunen–Loève Image Processing (KLIP), and classical reference differential imaging, to best optimize reference star subtraction—and find that NMF performed the best overall while KLIP produced the absolute best contrast inside 1″. We present limits on scattered light from warm dust, with constraints on surface brightness at 6 mJy as ^−2 at our inner working angle of 0.″6. We also place a constraint of 0.5 mJy as ^−2 outside 1″, which gives us an upper limit on the brightness for outer disks and substellar companions. Finally, we calculated an upper limit on the dust albedo at ω < 0.487.

Stellar infrared excesses can indicate various phenomena of interest, from protoplanetary disks to debris disks, or (more speculatively) techno-signatures along the lines of Dyson spheres. In this paper, we conduct a large search for “extreme” infrared excesses, designed as a data-driven contextual anomaly detection pipeline. We focus our search on FGK stars close to the main sequence to favor nonyoung host stars. We look for excess in the mid-infrared, unlocking a large sample to search in while favoring extreme IR excess akin to the ones produced by extreme debris disks (EDDs) and/or planetary collision events. We combine observations from ESA Gaia Data Release 3, the Two Micron All-Sky Survey, and the unWISE version of NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and create a catalog of 4,898,812 stars with G < 16 mag. We consider a star to have an excess if it is substantially brighter in the W 1 and W 2 bands than what is predicted from an ensemble of machine learning models trained on the data, taking optical and near-infrared information as input features. We apply a set of additional cuts (derived from the machine learning models and the objects’ astronomical features) to avoid false positives and identify a set of 53 objects, including one previously identified EDD candidate. The typical infrared-excess fractional luminosities we find are in the range 0.005–0.1, consistent with previous EDD candidates and potential planetary collision events.

JWST observed the magnetar 4U 0142+61 with the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) instruments within a 77 minute time interval on 2022 September 20–21. The low-resolution MIRI spectrum and NIRCam photometry show that the spectrum in the wavelength range 1.4–11 μ m range can be satisfactorily described by an absorbed power-law (PL) model, f _ν ∝ ν ^− ^α , with a spectral slope α = 0.96 ± 0.02, interstellar extinction A _V = 3.9 ± 0.2, and normalization f _0 = 59.4 ± 0.5 μ Jy at λ = 8 μ m. These observations do not support the passive disk model proposed in 2006 by Wang, Chakrabarty and Kaplan, based on Spitzer photometry, which was interpreted as evidence for a fallback disk from debris formed during the supernova explosion. We suggest a nonthermal origin for this emission and source variability as the most likely cause of discrepancies between the JWST data and other IR-optical observing campaigns. However, we cannot firmly exclude the presence of a large disk with a different dependence of the effective disk temperature on distance from the magnetar. Comparison with the PL fit to the hard X-ray spectrum above 10 keV, measured by the NuSTAR contemporaneously with JWST, shows that the X-ray spectrum is significantly harder. This may imply that the X-ray and IR nonthermal emission come from different sites in the magnetosphere of the magnetar.

The 16 Myr old A0V star HD 156623 in the Scorpius–Centaurus association hosts a high-fractional-luminosity debris disk, recently resolved in scattered light for the first time by the Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) in polarized intensity only. We present a new analysis of the GPI H -band polarimetric detection of the HD 156623 debris disk, with particular interest in its unique morphology. This debris disk lacks a visible inner clearing, unlike the majority of low-inclination disks in the GPI sample and in Sco-Cen, and it is known to contain CO gas, positioning it as a candidate “hybrid” or “shielded” disk. We use radiative transfer models to constrain the geometric parameters of the disk based on scattered light data and thermal models to constrain the unresolved inner radius based on the system’s spectral energy distribution (SED). We also compute a measurement of the polarized scattering phase function, adding to the existing sample of empirical phase function measurements. We find that HD 156623's debris disk inner radius is constrained to less than 26.6 au from scattered light imagery and less than 13.4 au from SED modeling at a 99.7% confidence interval and suggest that gas drag may play a role in retaining sub-blowout-size dust grains so close to the star.

Roughly 2% of white dwarfs harbor planetary debris disks detectable via infrared excesses, but only a few percent of these disks show a gaseous component, distinguished by their double-peaked emission at the near-infrared calcium triplet. Previous studies found that most debris disks around white dwarfs are variable at 3.4 and 4.5 μ m, but they analyzed only a few of the now 21 published disks showing calcium emission. To test if most published calcium emission disks exhibit large-amplitude stochastic variability in the near-infrared, we use light curves generated from the unWISE images at 3.4 μ m that are corrected for proper motion to characterize the near-infrared variability of these disks against samples of disks without calcium emission, highly variable cataclysmic variables, and 3215 isolated white dwarfs. We find that most calcium emission disks are extremely variable: 6/11 with sufficient signal-to-noise show high-amplitude variability in their 3.4 μ m light curves. These results lend further credence to the notion that disks showing gaseous debris in emission are the most collisionally active. Under the assumption that 3.4 μ m variability is characteristic of white dwarfs with dusty debris disks, we generate a catalog of 104 high-confidence near-infrared variable white dwarfs, 84 of which are published as variable for the first time. We do near-infrared spectroscopic follow-up of seven new candidate 3.4 μ m variables, confirming at least one new remnant planetary system, and posit that empirical near-infrared variability can be a discovery engine for debris disks showing gaseous emission.

We report our search for infrared excesses in the Spitzer/Infrared Array Camera survey of the Kepler field at 3.6 and 4.5 μ m. The Spitzer Kepler Survey contains ∼190,000 targets, which we reduce to ∼117,000 targets after applying multiple filters to arrive at a high-quality sample for spectral energy distribution fitting. Of the ∼117,000, we find 11 Sun-like stars ( T _eff ∼ 6000 K) with infrared excesses of high significance (>4 σ ) ranging from 10% to 40% above the photosphere at 4.5 μ m, which is characteristic of debris disk systems. Blackbody fits of the infrared excesses for the 11 debris disk candidates suggest dust temperatures of 400–1400 K. None of the candidates have reported exoplanet detections. High-quality 1–5 μ m or longer spectra or photometry would be necessary to confirm the candidates as debris disk systems.

The fallback disk model is widely accepted to explain long-period neutron stars (NSs) that cannot be simulated by magnetic dipole radiation. However, there was no confirmed detection of disks from the newly discovered long-period pulsars GLEAM-X 162759.5-523504.3 and GPM J1839-10 and the slowest known isolated NS 1E 161348-5055. This might be because the disks have either been in a noninteracting/inactive state where their emission is too weak to be detected or have been disrupted. In this work, we conduct simulations to examine the lifetime of supernova fallback disks around isolated NSs. We assume that the disks' mass varies in a self-similar way, and their interaction with the NS occurs only in an interacting/active state. Our results reveal that nearly all the interacting lifetimes for the disks are shorter than 10 ^5 yr, while the existence lifetimes are considerably longer.

We present a multiwavelength (1.16–2.37 μ m) view of the debris disk around BD+45 ^° 598, using the Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics system paired with the Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph. With an assumed age of 23 Myr, this source allows us to study the early evolution of debris disks and search for forming planets. We fit a scattered light model to our disk using a differential evolution algorithm, and constrain its geometry. We find the disk to have a peak density radius of R _0 = 109.6 au, an inclination of i = 88.1°, and position angle PA = 111.0°. While we do not detect a substellar companion in the disk, our calculated contrast limits indicate sensitivity to planets as small as ∼10 M _Jup at a projected separation of 12 au of the star, and as small as ∼4 M _Jup beyond 38 au. When measuring intensity as a function of wavelength, the disk color constrains the minimum dust grain size within a range of ∼0.13–1.01 μ m.

More than a thousand warm debris disks have been detected as infrared excess at mid-infrared wavelengths, and their frequencies have been obtained for various spectral types of stars. However, the dependence of the frequencies on spectral type is still debated because the number of stars with significant and detectable infrared excess is limited. Herein, we present the largest systematic search for infrared excess using data from Gaia, WISE, and Spitzer. We identified 373, 485, and 255-reliable infrared excesses in the mid-infrared archival data at wavelengths of 12, 22, and 24 μ m for WISE/W3, W4, and Spitzer/MIPS ch1, respectively. Although we confirmed that more massive stars tend to show higher frequencies of debris disks, these disk frequencies are relatively flat for both low- and intermediate-mass stars, with a jump at 7000 K for all three wavelengths. Assuming that bright, warm debris disks have lifetimes of a few to several hundred million years, the disk frequency can be understood as the ratio between the timescale and the upper limits of the sample ages. We also found that intermediate-mass stars with infrared excess tend to be bluer and fainter along the evolutionary track than those without, implying that massive stars hosting debris disks are relatively young, with an isochronal age of approximately 500 Myr. These tendencies are reasonably explained by a standard scenario in which debris disks are likely to be produced by collisions of planetesimals in the early stages of stellar evolution, such as the Late Heavy Bombardment.

The chemical composition of an extrasolar planet is fundamental to its formation, evolution, and habitability. In this study, we explore a new way to measure the chemical composition of the building blocks of extrasolar planets by measuring the gas composition of the disrupted planetesimals around white dwarf stars. As a first attempt, we used the photoionization code Cloudy to model the circumstellar gas emission around white dwarf Gaia J0611−6931 under some simplified assumptions. We found that most of the emission lines are saturated, and the line ratios approach the ratios of thermal emission; therefore, only lower limits to the number density can be derived. Silicon is the best-constrained element in the circumstellar gas, and we derived a lower limit of 10 ^10.3 cm ^−3 . In addition, we placed a lower limit on the total amount of gas to be 1.8 × 10 ^19 g. Further study is needed to better constrain the parameters of the gas disk and connect it to other white dwarfs with circumstellar gas absorption.

Debris disks or exo-Kuiper belts, detected through their thermal or scattered emission from their dusty components, are ubiquitous around main-sequence stars. Since dust grains are short-lived, their sustained presence is thought to require dynamical excitation, i.e., “stirring,” of a massive reservoir of large planetesimals, such that mutual collisions are violent enough to continually supply fresh dust. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain debris disk stirring, with the commonly accepted being long-term, secular planet–debris disk interactions. However, while effective, existing planet-stirring models are rudimentary; namely, they ignore the (self-)gravity of the disk, treating it as a massless reservoir of planetesimals. Here, using a simple analytical model, we investigate the secular interactions between eccentric planets and massive, external debris disks. We demonstrate that the disk gravity drives fast apsidal precession of both planetesimal and planetary orbits, which, depending on the system parameters, may well exceed the planet-induced precession rate of planetesimals. This results in strong suppression of planetesimal eccentricities and thus relative collisional velocities throughout the disk, often by more than an order of magnitude when compared to massless disk models. We thus show that massive debris disks may hinder secular stirring by eccentric planets orbiting near, e.g., the disk’s inner edge, provided the disk is more massive than the planet. We provide simple analytic formulae to describe these effects. Finally, we show that these findings have important implications for planet inferences in debris-bearing systems, as well as for constraining the total masses of debris disks (as done for β Pic).

We present JWST MIRI Medium Resolution Spectrograph (MRS) observations of the β Pictoris system. We detect an infrared excess from the central unresolved point source from 5 to 7.5 μ m which is indicative of dust within the inner ∼7 au of the system. We perform point-spread function (PSF) subtraction on the MRS data cubes and detect a spatially resolved dust population emitting at 5 μ m. This spatially resolved hot dust population is best explained if the dust grains are in the small grain limit (2 π a ≪ λ ). The combination of unresolved and resolved dust at 5 μ m could suggest that dust grains are being produced in the inner few astronomical units of the system and are then radiatively driven outwards, where the particles could accrete onto the known planets in the system, β Pictoris b and c. We also report the detection of an emission line at 6.986 μ m that we attribute to [Ar ii ]. We find that the [Ar ii ] emission is spatially resolved with JWST and appears to be aligned with the dust disk. Through PSF-subtraction techniques, we detect β Pictoris b at the 5 σ level in our MRS data cubes and present the first mid-infrared spectrum of the planet from 5 to 7 μ m. The planet’s spectrum is consistent with having absorption from water vapor between 5 and 6.5 μ m. We perform atmosphere model grid fitting of the spectra and photometry of β Pictoris b and find that the planet’s atmosphere likely has a substellar C/O ratio.

Light echoes of debris disks around active stars can reveal disk structure and composition even when disks are not spatially resolved. Unfortunately, distinguishing reflected light from quiescent starlight and unexpected post-peak flare structure is challenging, especially for edge-on geometries where the time delay between observed flare photons and light scattered from the near side of the disk is short. Here, we take advantage of the fact that scattered light from a dusty disk is polarized, depending on the location of the scattering site and the orientation of the disk relative to a distant observer. Filtering reflected light into its polarized components allows echoes to stand out in predictable ways. We test this idea with a simple model for a disk around an active M dwarf. Our results demonstrate that the use of polarimetric data of flaring stars can significantly enhance echo signals relative to starlight and yield more robust and accurate fits to disk parameters compared to analyses based on the total intensity alone.

We present high-spectral-resolution M -band spectra from iSHELL on NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility along the line of sight to the debris disk host star HD 32297. We also present a Gemini Planet Imager H -band polarimetric image of the HD 131488 debris disk. We search for fundamental CO absorption lines in the iSHELL spectra of HD 32297, but do not detect any. We place an upper limit on the CO column density of ∼6 × 10 ^15 cm ^−2 . By combining the column density upper limit, the CO mass measured with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and the geometrical properties of the disk, we estimate the scale height of the CO to be ≲2 au across the radial extent of the disk (∼80–120 au). We use the same method to estimate the CO scale height of three other edge-on, CO-rich debris disks that all have CO observed in absorption with the Hubble Space Telescope as well as in emission with ALMA: β Pictoris, HD 110058, and HD 131488. We compare our estimated CO scale heights of these four systems to the millimeter dust scale heights and find that, under the assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium, there is a potential correlation between the CO and millimeter dust scale heights. There are multiple factors that affect the gas vertical structure such as turbulence, photodissociation with weak vertical mixing, as well as where the gas originates. One possible explanation for the potential correlation could be that the gas and dust are of a similar secondary origin in these four systems.

A previously unremarkable star near the Canis Major OB1/R1 association underwent an episode of multiple deep brightness minima. Light curves based on archival Gaia, Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), and NEOWISE data and additional observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory and UKIRT show that the star was not variable prior to 2019 August 18 (MJD 58700), and on that date started showing brightness dips of up to 3 mag in the Gaia G and ZTF r bandpasses. After MJD 59500, ≈800 days after the onset of these dipping events, the star returned to its previous brightness, and no significant dipping events have been recorded since. Compared to the stable phase, NEOWISE IR photometry in the W1 and W2 bands indicates a generally redder color, and both decreases and increases in brightness at different times during the dipping episode. The spectrum of Gaia21bcv taken after the end of the dipping episode shows several neutral and ionized metal absorption lines, including Li, indicating a spectral type of ≈K5. Variable emission from [O i ] was observed. The H α absorption in Gaia21bcv is too faint and irregular for this spectral type, indicating that the line is partly filled in by variable emission, a signature of weak episodic accretion. Gaia21bcv lies above the zero-age main sequence, but is much fainter than typical R CrB stars. We interpret the light curve of Gaia21bcv as being similar to the occultation events in ϵ Aurigae, i.e., occultation by a disk around a companion object orbiting the primary star.

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) has excelled in imaging debris disks in the near-infrared. The GPI Exoplanet Survey imaged 24 debris disks in polarized H -band light, while other programs observed half of these disks in polarized J and/or K 1 bands. Using these data, we present a uniform analysis of the morphology of each disk to find asymmetries suggestive of perturbations, particularly those due to planet–disk interactions. The multiwavelength surface brightness, disk color, and geometry permit the identification of any asymmetries such as warps or disk offsets from the central star. We find that 19 of the disks in this sample exhibit asymmetries in surface brightness, disk color, disk geometry, or a combination of the three, suggesting that for this sample, perturbations, as seen in scattered light, are common. The relationship between these perturbations and potential planets in the system is discussed. We also explore correlations among stellar temperatures, ages, disk properties, and observed perturbations. We find significant trends between the vertical aspect ratio and the stellar temperature, disk radial extent, and the dust grain size distribution power law, q . We also confirm a trend between the disk color and stellar effective temperature, where the disk becomes increasingly red/neutral with increasing temperature. Such results have important implications for the evolution of debris disk systems around stars of various spectral types.

We present the first JWST Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) observations of the prominent debris disk around β Pictoris. Coronagraphic observations in eight filters spanning from 1.8 to 23 μ m provide an unprecedentedly clear view of the disk at these wavelengths. The objectives of the observing program were to investigate the dust composition and distribution and to investigate the presence of planets in the system. In this paper, we focus on the disk components, providing surface brightness measurements for all images and a detailed investigation of the asymmetries observed. A companion paper by Kammerer et al. will focus on the planets in this system using the same data. We report for the first time the presence of an extended secondary disk in thermal emission, with a curved extension bent away from the plane of the disk. This feature, which we refer to as the “cat’s tail,” seems to be connected with the previously reported CO clump, mid-infrared asymmetry detected on the southwest side of the disk, and the warp observed in scattered light. We present a model of this secondary disk sporadically producing dust that broadly reproduces the morphology, flux, and color of the cat’s tail, as well as other features observed in the disk, and which suggests the secondary disk is composed largely of porous, organic refractory dust grains.

HD 106906 is a planetary system that hosts a wide-orbit companion, as well as an eccentric and flat debris disk, which hold important constraints on its formation and subsequent evolution. The recent observations of the companion constrain its orbit to be eccentric and inclined relative to the plane of the debris disk. Here, we show that, in the presence of the inclined companion, the debris disk quickly (≲5 Myr) becomes warped and puffy. This suggests that the current configuration of the system is relatively recent. We explore the possibility that a recent close encounter with a free-floating planet could produce a companion with orbital parameters that agree with observations of HD 106906 b. We find that this scenario is able to recreate the structure of the debris disk while producing a companion in agreement with observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While most debris disks consist of dust with little or no gas, a fraction have significant amounts of gas detected via emission lines of CO, ionized carbon, and/or atomic oxygen. Almost all such gaseous debris disks known are around A-type stars with ages up to 50 Myr. We show, using semianalytic disk evolution modeling, that this can be understood if the gaseous debris disks are remnant protoplanetary disks that have become depleted of small grains compared to the interstellar medium. Photoelectric heating by the A stars’ far-UV (FUV) radiation is then inefficient, while the stars’ extreme-UV (EUV) and X-ray emissions are weak owing to a lack of surface convective zones capable of driving magnetic activity. In this picture, it is relatively difficult for stars outside the range of spectral types from A through early B to have such long-lived gas disks. Less-massive stars have stronger magnetic activity in the chromosphere, transition region, and corona with resulting EUV and X-ray emission, while more-massive stars have photospheres hot enough to produce strong EUV radiation. In both cases, primordial disk gas is likely to photoevaporate well before 50 Myr. These results come from 0D disk evolution models where we incorporate internal accretion stresses, MHD winds, and photoevaporation by EUV and X-ray photons with luminosities that are functions of the stellar mass and age. A key issue this work leaves open is how some disks become depleted in small dust so that FUV photoevaporation slows. Candidates include the grains’ growth, settling, radial drift, radiation force, and incorporation into planetary systems.

We present the direct-imaging discovery of a giant planet orbiting the young star AF Lep, a 1.2 M _⊙ member of the 24 ± 3 Myr β Pic moving group. AF Lep was observed as part of our ongoing high-contrast imaging program targeting stars with astrometric accelerations between Hipparcos and Gaia that indicate the presence of substellar companions. Keck/NIRC2 observations in $L^{\prime} $ with the vector vortex coronagraph reveal a point source, AF Lep b, at ≈340 mas, which exhibits orbital motion at the 6 σ level over the course of 13 months. A joint orbit fit yields precise constraints on the planet’s dynamical mass of ${3.2}_{-0.6}^{+0.7}$ M _Jup , semimajor axis of ${8.4}_{-1.3}^{+1.1}$ au, and eccentricity of ${0.24}_{-0.15}^{+0.27}$ . AF Lep hosts a debris disk located at ∼50 au, but it is unlikely to be sculpted by AF Lep b, implying there may be additional planets in the system at wider separations. The stellar inclination ( i _* = ${54}_{-9}^{{+11}^\circ} $ ) and orbital inclination ( i _o = ${50}_{-12}^{{+9}^\circ} $ ) are in good agreement, which is consistent with the system having spin–orbit alignment. AF Lep b is the lowest-mass imaged planet with a dynamical mass measurement and highlights the promise of using astrometric accelerations as a tool to find and characterize long-period planets.

To date, rings are found around a Centaur (10199) Chariklo, trans-neptunian objects (TNOs) (136108) Haumea, and (50000) Quaoar. These discoveries suggest that asteroidal ring systems may be common, particularly in the outer solar system. Since collisions are a ubiquitous and fundamental evolutionary process throughout the solar system, we conjecture that asteroidal ring systems must have experienced close encounters with small objects as part of their evolutionary process. Here, we investigate the response of ring systems when they experience gravitational disturbance by a close encounter with another small object, by calculating the change in eccentricity and the fraction of lost ring particles. We find that a perturber needs to be as massive as or more massive than the ringed object, and needs to pass in the immediate vicinity of the ring in order to cause significant disruption. The change in eccentricity expected for Chariklo's inner ring and Quaoar's outer ring agrees with the analytical expression derived from the impulse approximation, while that for Haumea's ring agrees with the analytical expression called "exponential regime". If we define a lifetime of a ring as the mean time to experience disruptive close encounters that can raise the eccentricity of ring particles >0.1, the lifetime for ring systems around Chariklo, Haumea, and Quaoar are >104 Gyr. We conclude that ring systems around Chariklo, Haumea, and Quaoar are highly unlikely to suffer from close encounters with another small object even if those systems are as old as 4 Gyr. Close encounter with a small object may not be responsible for the finite eccentricity observed for Chariklo's ring system, although eccentricity of ring particles could be increased to ∼10−4 in 4 Gyr. We also find that the lifetime is shorter for smaller ringed objects, and it still exceeds 4 Gyr for km-sized ringed objects in the outer solar system. Therefore, regardless of the size of ringed objects, asteroidal ring systems in the outer solar system are unlikely to suffer severe damage by close encounter with a small object. On the other hand, the lifetime is estimated to be on the order of 100 Myr for km-sized asteroids and 10 Myr for 100 m-sized asteroids in the near-Earth region and the main belt. This finding offers a dynamical explanation why ring systems have not been found in the inner solar system. • Rings are undisturbed unless objects with comparable or greater mass pass closely. • Disruptive close encounters are unlikely to occur in 4 Gyr. • Ring systems around larger objects have a longer lifetime. Extensive numerical experiments on the long-term dynamics of planetesimal disks with planets in systems of single stars have been carried out. The planetary chaotic zone clearing timescales as a function of mass parameter (planet–star mass ratio) have been determined numerically with a high accuracy separately for the outer and inner parts of the chaotic zone. Diffusional components and have been revealed in the dependence . The results obtained are discussed and interpreted in light of existing analytical theories based on the mean motion resonance overlap criterion and in comparison with previous numerical approaches to the problem. Impact experiments were conducted at a velocity of ∼0.2–1.0 km s ^−1 using fine particles with several microns or submicrons in size. For metal (Cu) plate targets, as observed in previous impact experiments using projectiles with sizes larger than tens of micron, our experiments with the fine particles also show that projectile materials can remain in the crater. For brittle (SiO _2 glass) plate targets, though previous impact experiments using projectiles with sizes larger than tens of microns have shown the spallation and ejection of projectile materials, our experiments with the fine particles show that irreversible inelastic deformation of targets occurred and that projectile materials can remain in the crater. This is explained by the absorption of impact energy determined via the competition between deformation and crack propagation. The deformation thus contributes to the energy absorption even for brittle materials at small sizes. Compiling our results and previous data, we found that sticking can occur in collisions with particles up to at least 1 cm for ductile (metal) targets and 10 μ m for brittle targets at several hundred meters per second. As an application, we evaluated the size distribution of dust grains in a debris disk where the sticking of fine particles is assumed to occur. We demonstrated that the collisional sticking modified the size distribution, resulting in the decrease of spectral energy distribution at millimeter wavelengths, consistent with the photometry data of this debris disk. This suggests that the sticking of fine particles occurs in this debris disk.

RZ Piscium (RZ Psc) is well known in the variable star field because of its numerous irregular optical dips in the past 5 decades, but the nature of the system is heavily debated in the literature. We present multiyear infrared monitoring data from Spitzer and WISE to track the activities of the inner debris production, revealing stochastic infrared variability as short as weekly timescales that is consistent with destroying a 90 km sized asteroid every year. ALMA 1.3 mm data combined with spectral energy distribution modeling show that the disk is compact (∼0.1–13 au radially) and lacks cold gas. The disk is found to be highly inclined and has a significant vertical scale height. These observations confirm that RZ Psc hosts a close to edge-on, highly perturbed debris disk possibly due to migration of recently formed giant planets that might be triggered by the low-mass companion RZ Psc B if the planets formed well beyond the snowlines.

High-contrast imaging of debris disk systems permits us to assess the composition and size distribution of circumstellar dust, to probe recent dynamical histories, and to directly detect and characterize embedded exoplanets. Observations of these systems in the infrared beyond 2–3 μ m promise access to both extremely favorable planet contrasts and numerous scattered-light spectral features—but have typically been inhibited by the brightness of the sky at these wavelengths. We present coronagraphy of the AU Microscopii (AU Mic) system using JWST’s Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) in two filters spanning 3–5 μ m. These data provide the first images of the system’s famous debris disk at these wavelengths and permit additional constraints on its properties and morphology. Conducting a deep search for companions in these data, we do not identify any compelling candidates. However, with sensitivity sufficient to recover planets as small as ∼0.1 Jupiter masses beyond ∼2″ (∼20 au) with 5 σ confidence, these data place significant constraints on any massive companions that might still remain at large separations and provide additional context for the compact, multiplanet system orbiting very close-in. The observations presented here highlight NIRCam’s unique capabilities for probing similar disks in this largely unexplored wavelength range, and they provide the deepest direct imaging constraints on wide-orbit giant planets in this very well-studied benchmark system.

High-resolution observations of several debris disks reveal structures such as gaps and spirals, suggestive of gravitational perturbations induced by underlying planets. Most existing studies of planet–debris disk interactions ignore the gravity of the disk, treating it as a reservoir of massless planetesimals. In this paper, we continue our investigation into the long-term interaction between a single eccentric planet and an external, massive debris disk. Building upon our previous work, here we consider not only the axisymmetric component of the disk’s gravitational potential, but also the nonaxisymmetric torque that the disk exerts on the planet (ignoring for now only the nonaxisymmetric component of the disk self -gravity). To this goal, we develop and test a semianalytic “ N -ring” framework that is based on a generalized (softened) version of the classical Laplace–Lagrange secular theory. Using this tool, we demonstrate that even when the disk is less massive than the planet, not only can a secular resonance be established within the disk that leads to the formation of a wide gap, but that the very same resonance also damps the planetary eccentricity e _p via a process known as resonant friction. The resulting gap is initially nonaxisymmetric (akin to those observed in HD 92945 and HD 206893), but evolves to become more axisymmetric (similar to that in HD 107146) as e _p ( t ) → 0 with time. We also develop analytic understanding of these findings, finding good quantitative agreement with the outcomes of the N -ring calculations. Our results may be used to infer both the dynamical masses of (gapped) debris disks and the dynamical history of the planets interior to them, as we exemplify for HD 206893.
