Mastitis is the top most reason for antibiotic usage, which is an important public health concern due to antimicrobial resistance development in pathogen. Citrate is an important precursor for milk synthesis and regulation of homeostasis between Ca2+ and H+ ions and thereby milk fluidity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of trisodium citrate (TSC) on recovery of subclinical mastitis (SCM) in HF crossbred cows. Apparently healthy lactating cow’s milk samples were screened by somatic cell count (SCC) and California mastitis tests (CMT) methods for three consecutive days. Animals were diagnosed as SCM affected (n = 16) or healthy (n = 6) using milk SCC cutoff value of 200×103 cells/ml (i.e., ≥ 200 ×103 cells/ml as SCM and ≤ 200 ×103 cells/ml as healthy) and classified into three groups based on parity, stage of lactation and milk yield during pre-treatment period. SCM affected cows (n = 8) supplemented with TSC (30 mg/kg B.wt./day for 28 days) and effect of supplementation was evaluated through milk SCC, CMT score, milk yield, milk composition, milk citrate level and bacteriological cure rate in comparison with non-supplemented SCM affected cows (n = 6) and apparently healthy cows (n = 8). Background: Boron (B), a novel micronutrient is known to influence utilization of macrominerals. Present study was conducted in layer birds to study the effect of B supplementation to inadequate calcium (Ca) diet on mineral content in serum, tissue and antioxidant status. Methods: A total of 80 commrcial White Leghorn layers, 25 weeks old with a uniform body weight were randomly assigned to one of the 4 groups of 20 hens in each dietary group viz., Normal calcium (NC), inadequate/low calcium (LC), Normal calcium with 40 ppm B (NCB) and inadequate/low calcium with 40 ppm B (LCB). Dietary level of calcium was maintained at 100 and 90% of the requirement and sodium borate was used as B source. At the end of feeding trial, blood and tissue samples were collected for estimating mineral and biochemical parameters. Result: Boron supplementation did not significantly alter the serum mineral content, serum alkaline phosphatase and total antioxidant activity but significantly (P less than 0.025) increased the superoxide dismutase activity in layers fed inadequate Ca diet. Boron supplementation to both diets significantly (P less than 0.03) increased phosphorus (P) content in bone and muscle, and magnesium (Mg) content in muscle (P less than 0.019). Boron supplementation to Ca inadequate diet significantly (P less than 0.006) enhanced the P and Mg content in liver. Content of B was significantly (P less than 0.01) higher in serum, bone and liver of hens supplemented 40 ppm of B. Implication of this study is amelioration of abiotic stress due to inadequate Ca intake with B supplementation. It is concluded that 40 ppm B supplementation positively influenced the Ca, P and Mg utilization and serum SOD activity.

Interest in probiotics has grown significantly in the last decades due to their reported nutritional and health promoting effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the therapeutic potential of probiotic fermented milk (PFM) prepared using three different probiotic strains i.e. Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC: 5957, Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC: 5897 and Lactobacillus fermentum MTCC: 5898; independently or in combination, for treating streptozotocin induced type-1 diabetes in male Wistar rats. Diabetic rats were fed with PFM preparations for 6 weeks and then analyzed for the various biochemical parameters associated. The results indicated that feeding of PFM significantly improved glucose metabolism (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, serum insulin), serum inflammation status (tumor necrosis factor-α, and serum interleukin-6), oxidative stress (thiobarbituric acid reactive substance, catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activities in liver and kidney), serum lipid profile (total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides) in diabetic rats. In addition, feeding of PFM has significantly reduced mRNA expression of pepck and g6pase genes that code the key enzymes of gluconeogenesis pathway. The results of this study showed that daily consumption of PFM can be effective in combating of type -1 diabetes and its complications.
