Abstract

We study the relations between moments of fusion cross sections and averages of angular momentum. The role of the centrifugal barrier and the target deformation in determining the effective barrier radius are clarified. A simple method for extracting average angular momentum from fusion cross sections is demonstrated using numerical examples as well as actual data., Comment: 16 REVTeX pages plus 8 included Postscript figures (uses the epsf macro); submitted to Phys. Abstract

We present an undergraduate-level experiment using a conventional absorption spectrophotometer to measure the wavelength dependence of light scattering from small dielectric spheres suspended in water. The experiment yielded total scattering cross-section values throughout the visible region that were in good agreement with theoretical values predicted by the Rayleigh and Mie theories. Abstract

A solution, solid-state, and computational study is reported of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon PAH/PAH(CF3)n donor/acceptor (D/A) charge-transfer complexes that involve six PAH(CF3)n acceptors with known gas-phase electron affinities that range from 2.11(2) to 2.805(15) eV and four PAH donors, including seven CT co-crystal X-ray structures that exhibit hexagonal arrays of mixed ��-stacks with 1/1, 1/2, or 2/1 D/A stoichiometries (PAH=anthracene, azulene, coronene, perylene, pyrene, triphenylene; n=5, 6). These are the first D/A CT complexes with PAH(CF3)n acceptors to be studied in detail. The nine D/A combinations were chosen to allow several structural and electronic comparisons to be made, providing new insights about controlling D/A interactions and the structures of CT co-crystals. The comparisons include, among others, CT complexes of the same PAH(CF3)n acceptor with four PAH donors and CT complexes of the same donor with four PAH(CF3)n acceptors. All nine CT complexes exhibit charge-transfer bands in solution with ��max between 467 and 600 nm. A plot of E(��max) versus [IE(donor)���EA(acceptor)] for the nine CT complexes studied is linear with a slope of 0.72��0.03 eV eV���1. This plot is the first of its kind for CT complexes with structurally related donors and acceptors for which precise experimental gas-phase IEs and EAs are known. It demonstrates that conclusions based on the common assumption that the slope of a CT E(��max) versus [IE���EA] plot is unity may be incorrect in at least some cases and should be reconsidered. �� 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. 14. CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray Disc Diffraction with a Laser Ray Box

Abstract

A compact disc (CD) can be used as a diffraction grating, even though its track consists of a series of pits, not a continuous groove. Previous authors described how to measure the track spacing on a CD using an incident laser beam normal to the surface or one at an oblique angle. In both cases, the diffraction pattern was projected on a screen and distance measurements allowed the track spacing to be calculated. I propose an alternative method using a laser ray box, which is also applied to a DVD and a Blu-ray disc.

Abstract

Organic Semiconductors By decorating phenazine molecules with trifluoromethyl groups, in a simple one‐step high‐temperature reaction, a series of the nine new compounds were prepared, with the compositions ranging from mono‐ to hexatrifluoromethyl derivatives—the X‐ray structures are shown in the front panel of the figure. Projected on the white screen in the back is a graph showing a remarkably linear correlation between the measured gas‐phase electron affinity of trifluoromethylated phenazines and the number of the attached CF3 groups. This new family of highly tunable azaacene electron acceptors may be of interest for organic electronics, and donor‐acceptor interactions with biomolecules. Abstract

This article presents the comment of well-known physical scientists Gabriele Varieschi and Kaoru Kamiya on toy models for the falling chimney. Both the scientists have derived expressions for the shear force and bending moment in a falling chimney from a detailed vector analysis of the forces that arise during this process. They predicted that if the chimney breaks during its fall, it will most likely break at a position that is between one third and one half of the chimney height. They pointed out that some earlier analyses of the falling chimney incorrectly identify the center of percussion as the point at which the chimney is most likely to break. During their study they discussed the "center of percussion," which is located at two-thirds of the length of chimney. The apparatus made by the researchers lead to an interesting demonstration. This demonstration is not one of the variations that Varieschi referenced, nor does it appear on the many physics demonstration websites that he has searched.
