Search

Fundamental neutron physics, combining precision measurements and theory, probes particle physics at short range with reach well beyond the highest energies probed by the LHC. Significant US efforts are underway that will probe BSM CP violation with orders of magnitude more sensitivity, provide new data on the Cabibbo anomaly, more precisely measure the neutron lifetime and decay, and explore hadronic parity violation. World-leading results from the US Fundamental Neutron Physics community since the last Long Range Plan, include the world's most precise measurement of the neutron lifetime from UCN$\tau$, the final results on the beta-asymmetry from UCNA and new results on hadronic parity violation from the NPDGamma and n-${^3}$He runs at the FNPB (Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline), precision measurement of the radiative neutron decay mode and n-${}^4$He at NIST. US leadership and discovery potential are ensured by the development of new high-impact experiments including BL3, Nab, LANL nEDM and nEDM@SNS. On the theory side, the last few years have seen results for the neutron EDM from the QCD $\theta$ term, a factor of two reduction in the uncertainty for inner radiative corrections in beta-decay which impacts CKM unitarity, and progress on {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear structure for medium-mass and heavy nuclei which can eventually improve the connection between nuclear and nucleon EDMs. In order to maintain this exciting program and capitalize on past investments while also pursuing new ideas and building US leadership in new areas, the Fundamental Neutron Physics community has identified a number of priorities and opportunities for our sub-field covering the time-frame of the last Long Range Plan (LRP) under development. This whitepaper presents the research priorities decided on by attendees of the 2022 Town Meeting for Fundamental Symmetries, Neutrons and Neutrinos, which took place December 13-15, 2022 in Chapel Hill, NC, as part of the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee (NSAC) 2023 Long Range Planning process. A total of 275 scientists registered for the meeting. The whitepaper makes a number of explicit recommendations and justifies them in detail.

This report shows the design and the performance of a large area Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) module developed detection of fluorescent light emitted from a 10 cm scale volume. The module was optimized for the planned ACME III electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) search, which will be a powerful probe for the existence of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The ACME experiment searched for the eEDM with the world's highest sensitivity using cold ThO polar molecules (ACME II). In ACME III, SiPMs will be used for detection of fluorescent photons (the fundamental signal of the experiment) instead of PMTs, which were used in the previous measurement. We have developed an optimized SiPM module, based on a 16-channel SiPM array. Key operational parameters are characterized, including gain and noise. The SiPM dark count rate, background light sensitivity, and optical crosstalk are found to all be well suppressed and more than sufficient for the ACME III application., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, proceedings for NDIP20

High energy physics aims to understand the fundamental laws of particles and their interactions at both the largest and smallest scales of the universe. This typically means probing very high energies or large distances or using high-intensity beams, which often requires large-scale experiments. A complementary approach is offered through high-precision measurements in small- and mid-scale size experiments, often at lower energies. The field of such high-precision experiments has seen tremendous progress and importance for particle physics for at least two reasons. First, they exploit synergies to adjacent areas of particle physics and benefit by many recent advances in experimental techniques. Together with intensified phenomenological explorations, these advances led to the realization that challenges associated with weak couplings or the expected suppression factors from the mass scale of new physics can be overcome with such methods. Second, many of these measurements add a new set of particle physics phenomena and observables that can be reached compared to the more conventional methodologies using high energies. Combining high-precision, smaller-scale measurements with the large-scale efforts therefore casts a wider and tighter net for possible effects originating from physics beyond the Standard Model. This report presents a broad set of small-scale research projects that could provide key new precision measurements in the areas of electric dipole moments, magnetic dipole moments, fermion flavor violation, tests of spacetime symmetries, and tests with gravity. The growing impact of these high-precision studies in high energy physics and the complementary input they provide compared to large-scale efforts warrants strong support over the next decades. We discuss how molecule-based searches offer complementary probes to study the violation of fundamental symmetries. These experiments have the potential to probe not only the electron EDM, but also hadronic CPV phenomena. Future experimental developments will offer generic sensitivity to probe flavor neutral sources of both leptonic and hadronic CPV at scales of $\geq$ 100 TeV, and flavor changing CPV at scales of $\geq$ 1000 TeV.

Experimental searches for the electron electric dipole moment, $d_e$, probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. Recently, the ACME Collaboration set a new limit of $|d_e| <1.1\times 10^{-29}$ $e\cdot \textrm{cm}$ [Nature $\textbf{562}$, 355 (2018)], constraining time reversal symmetry (T) violating physics in the 3-100 TeV energy scale. ACME extracts $d_e$ from the measurement of electron spin precession due to the thorium monoxide (ThO) molecule's internal electric field. This recent ACME II measurement achieved an order of magnitude increased sensitivity over ACME I by reducing both statistical and systematic uncertainties in the measurement of the electric dipole precession frequency. The ACME II statistical uncertainty was a factor of 1.7 above the ideal shot-noise limit. We have since traced this excess noise to timing imperfections. When the experimental imperfections are eliminated, we show that shot noise limit is attained by acquiring noise-free data in the same configuration as ACME II., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We describe experiments demonstrating efficient transfer of molecules from a magneto-optical trap (MOT) into a conservative magnetic quadrupole trap. Our scheme begins with a blue-detuned optical molasses to cool SrF molecules to $\sim\!50$ $\mu$K. Next, we optically pump the molecules into a strongly-trapped sublevel. This two-step process reliably transfers $64\%$ of the molecules initially trapped in the MOT into the magnetic trap, comparable to similar atomic experiments. Once loaded, the magnetic trap is compressed by increasing the magnetic field gradient. Finally, we demonstrate a magnetic trap lifetime of over $1$ s. This opens a promising new path to the study of ultracold molecular collisions, and potentially the production of quantum-degenerate molecular gases.

This article reviews recent developments in tests of fundamental physics using atoms and molecules, including the subjects of parity violation, searches for permanent electric dipole moments, tests of the CPT theorem and Lorentz symmetry, searches for spatiotemporal variation of fundamental constants, tests of quantum electrodynamics, tests of general relativity and the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, dark energy and extra forces, and tests of the spin-statistics theorem. Key results are presented in the context of potential new physics and in the broader context of similar investigations in other fields. Experimental searches for the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) probe new physics beyond the Standard Model. The current best EDM limit was set by the ACME Collaboration [Science \textbf{343}, 269 (2014)], constraining time reversal symmetry ($T$) violating physics at the TeV energy scale. ACME used optical pumping to prepare a coherent superposition of ThO $H^3\Delta_1$ states that have aligned electron spins. Spin precession due to the molecule's internal electric field was measured to extract the EDM. We report here on an improved method for preparing this spin-aligned state of the electron by using STIRAP. We demonstrate a transfer efficiency of $75\pm5\%$, representing a significant gain in signal for a next generation EDM experiment. We discuss the particularities of implementing STIRAP in systems such as ours, where molecular ensembles with large phase-space distributions are transfered via weak molecular transitions with limited laser power and limited optical access.

We demonstrate a scheme for magneto-optically trapping strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules at temperatures one order of magnitude lower and phase space densities three orders of magnitude higher than obtained previously with laser-cooled molecules. In our trap, optical dark states are destabilized by rapidly and synchronously reversing the trapping laser polarizations and the applied magnetic field gradient. The number of molecules and trap lifetime are also significantly improved from previous work by loading the trap with high laser power and then reducing the power for long-term trapping. We present experimental results from a new scheme for magneto-optically trapping strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules, which provides increased confinement compared to our original work. The improved trap employs a new approach to magneto-optical trapping presented by M. Tarbutt, \emph{arXiv preprint} 1409.0244, which provided insight for the first time into the source of the restoring force in magneto-optical traps (MOTs) where the cycling transition includes dark Zeeman sublevels (known as type-II MOTs). We measure a radial spring constant $20\times$ greater than in our original work with SrF, comparable to the spring constants reported in atomic type-II MOTs. We achieve a trap lifetime $\tau_{\rm{MOT}}=136(2)$~ms, over $2\times$ longer than originally reported for SrF. Finally, we demonstrate further cooling of the trapped molecules by briefly increasing the trapping lasers' detunings. Our trapping scheme remains a straightforward extension of atomic techniques and marks a step towards the direct production of large, dense, ultracold molecular gases via laser cooling., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Recent measurements in paramagnetic molecules improved the limit on the electron electric dipole moment (EDM) by an order of magnitude. Time-reversal (T) and parity (P) symmetry violation in molecules may also come from their nuclei. We point out that nuclear T,P-odd effects are amplified in paramagnetic molecules containing deformed nuclei, where the primary effects arise from the T,P-odd nuclear magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM). We perform calculations of T,P-odd effects in the molecules TaN, ThO, ThF$^+$, HfF$^+$, YbF, HgF, and BaF induced by MQMs. We compare our results with those for the diamagnetic TlF molecule, where the T,P-odd effects are produced by the nuclear Schiff moment. We argue that measurements in molecules with MQMs may provide improved limits on the strength of T,P-odd nuclear forces, on the proton, neutron and quark EDMs, on quark chromo-EDMs, and on the QCD $\theta$-term and CP-violating quark interactions., Comment: 6 pages, accepted to PRL; v.2: Eq.(10) added, results unchanged

Laser cooling and trapping are central to modern atomic physics. The workhorse technique in cold-atom physics is the magneto-optical trap (MOT), which combines laser cooling with a restoring force from radiation pressure. For a variety of atomic species, MOTs can capture and cool large numbers of particles to ultracold temperatures (<1 mK); this has enabled the study of a wide range of phenomena from optical clocks to ultracold collisions whilst also serving as the ubiquitous starting point for further cooling into the regime of quantum degeneracy. Magneto-optical trapping of molecules could provide a similarly powerful starting point for the study and manipulation of ultracold molecular gases. Here, we demonstrate three-dimensional magneto-optical trapping of a diatomic molecule, strontium monofluoride (SrF), at a temperature of approximately 2.5 mK. This method is expected to be viable for a significant number of diatomic species. Such chemical diversity is desired for the wide array of existing and proposed experiments which employ molecules for applications ranging from precision measurement, to quantum simulation and quantum information, to ultracold chemistry., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

The current limit on the electron's electric dipole moment, $|d_\mathrm{e}|<8.7\times 10^{-29} e {\cdotp} {\rm cm}$ (90% confidence), was set using the molecule thorium monoxide (ThO) in the $J=1$ rotational level of its $H ^3\Delta_1$ electronic state [Science $\bf 343$, 269 (2014)]. This state in ThO is very robust against systematic errors related to magnetic fields or geometric phases, due in part to its $\Omega$-doublet structure. These systematics can be further suppressed by operating the experiment under conditions where the $g$-factor difference between the $\Omega$-doublets is minimized. We consider the $g$-factors of the ThO $H^3\Delta_1$ state both experimentally and theoretically, including dependence on $\Omega$-doublets, rotational level, and external electric field. The calculated and measured values are in good agreement. We find that the $g$-factor difference between $\Omega$-doublets is smaller in $J=2$ than in $J=1$, and reaches zero at an experimentally accessible electric field. This means that the $H,J=2$ state should be even more robust against a number of systematic errors compared to $H,J=1$.

Rotational levels of molecular free radicals can be tuned to degeneracy using laboratory-scale magnetic fields. Because of their intrinsically narrow width, these level crossings of opposite-parity states have been proposed for use in the study of parity-violating interactions and other applications. We experimentally study a typical manifestation of this system using $^{138}$BaF. Using a Stark-mixing method for detection, we demonstrate level-crossing signals with spectral width as small as 6 kHz. We use our data to verify the predicted lineshapes, transition dipole moments, and Stark shifts, and to precisely determine molecular magnetic g-factors. We demonstrate the direct formation of vibronic ground state RbCs molecules by photoassociation of ultracold atoms followed by radiative stabilization. The photoassociation proceeds through deeply-bound levels of the (2)^{3}\Pi_{0^{+}} state. From analysis of the relevant free-to-bound and bound-to-bound Franck-Condon factors, we have predicted and experimentally verified a set of photoassociation resonances that lead to efficient creation of molecules in the v=0 vibrational level of the X^{1}\Sigma^{+} electronic ground state. We also compare the observed and calculated laser intensity required to saturate the photoassociation rate. We discuss the prospects for using short-range photoassociation to create and accumulate samples of ultracold polar molecules in their rovibronic ground state., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Heavy diatomic molecules have been identified as good candidates for use in electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) searches. Suitable molecular species can be produced in pulsed beams, but with a total flux and/or temporal evolution that varies significantly from pulse to pulse. These variations can degrade the experimental sensitivity to changes in spin precession phase of an electri- cally polarized state, which is the observable of interest for an eEDM measurement. We present two methods for measurement of the phase that provide immunity to beam temporal variations, and make it possible to reach shot-noise-limited sensitivity. Each method employs rapid projection of the spin state onto both components of an orthonormal basis. We demonstrate both methods using the eEDM-sensitive H state of thorium monoxide (ThO), and use one of them to measure the magnetic moment of this state with increased accuracy relative to previous determinations., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We present results of the first experiment to probe for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron using an $\Omega$-doublet state in a polar molecule. If the molecule is both massive and has a large molecular-fixed frame dipole moment, then the $\Omega$-doublet states have the potential to greatly increase the sensitivity of experiments searching for the EDM while also allowing for new methods of systematic error rejection. Here, we use the metastable $a(1)^3\Sigma^+$ state of lead monoxide (PbO) to probe for the electron EDM. Our best fit for the electron EDM of $d_e = (-4.4\pm9.5_\text{stat}\pm1.8_\text{syst})\times10^{-27}\ecm$ allows us to place an upper limit on the magnitude of the EDM of $|d_e|<1.7\times10^{-26}\ecm$ (90% confidence). While this is less stringent than limits from other, previous experiments, our work emphasizes the systematic error rejection properties associated with the $\Omega$-doublet level structure. There is substantial interest in producing samples of ultracold molecules for possible applications in quantum computation, quantum simulation of condensed matter systems, precision measurements, controlled chemistry, and high precision spectroscopy. A crucial step to obtaining large samples of ultracold, trapped molecules is developing a means to bridge the gap between typical molecular source velocities (~150-600 m/s) and velocities for which trap loading or confinement is possible (~5-20 m/s). Here we show deceleration of a beam of neutral strontium monofluoride (SrF) molecules using radiative force. Under certain conditions, the deceleration results in a substantial flux of molecules with velocities <50 m/s. The observed slowing, from ~140 m/s, corresponds to scattering ~10000 photons. We also observe longitudinal velocity compression under different conditions. Combined with molecular laser cooling techniques, this lays the groundwork to create slow and cold molecular beams suitable for trap loading., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures. We measure the upper state lifetime and two ratios of vibrational branching fractions f_{v'v} on the B^{3}\Pi_{1}(v') - X^{1}\Sigma^{+}(v) transition of TlF. We find the B state lifetime to be 99(9) ns. We also determine that the off-diagonal vibrational decays are highly suppressed: f_{01}/f_{00} < 2x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.10(6)%, in excellent agreement with their predicted values of f_{01}/f_{00} < 8x10^{-4} and f_{02}/f_{00} = 1.0(2)% based on Franck-Condon factors calculated using Morse and RKR potentials. It has been roughly three decades since laser cooling techniques produced ultracold atoms, leading to rapid advances in a vast array of fields. Unfortunately laser cooling has not yet been extended to molecules because of their complex internal structure. However, this complexity makes molecules potentially useful for many applications. For example, heteronuclear molecules possess permanent electric dipole moments which lead to long-range, tunable, anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions. The combination of the dipole-dipole interaction and the precise control over molecular degrees of freedom possible at ultracold temperatures make ultracold molecules attractive candidates for use in quantum simulation of condensed matter systems and quantum computation. Also ultracold molecules may provide unique opportunities for studying chemical dynamics and for tests of fundamental symmetries. Here we experimentally demonstrate laser cooling of the molecule strontium monofluoride (SrF). Using an optical cycling scheme requiring only three lasers, we have observed both Sisyphus and Doppler cooling forces which have substantially reduced the transverse temperature of a SrF molecular beam. Currently the only technique for producing ultracold molecules is by binding together ultracold alkali atoms through Feshbach resonance or photoassociation. By contrast, different proposed applications for ultracold molecules require a variety of molecular energy-level structures. Our method provides a new route to ultracold temperatures for molecules. In particular it bridges the gap between ultracold temperatures and the ~1 K temperatures attainable with directly cooled molecules (e.g. cryogenic buffer gas cooling or decelerated supersonic beams). Ultimately our technique should enable the production of large samples of molecules at ultracold temperatures for species that are chemically distinct from bialkalis., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We demonstrate and characterize a cryogenic buffer gas-cooled molecular beam source capable of producing bright beams of free radicals and refractory species. Details of the beam properties (brightness, forward velocity distribution, transverse velocity spread, rotational and vibrational temperatures) are measured under varying conditions for the molecular species SrF. Under typical conditions we produce a beam of brightness 1.2 x 10^11 molecules/sr/pulse in the rovibrational ground state, with 140 m/s forward velocity and a rotational temperature of approximately 1 K. This source compares favorably to other methods for producing beams of free radicals and refractory species for many types of experiments. We have recently described a novel method for the construction of a solid-state optical frequency reference based on doping $^{229}$Th into high energy band-gap crystals. Since nuclear transitions are far less sensitive to environmental conditions than atomic transitions, we have argued that the $^{229}$Th optical nuclear transition may be driven inside a host crystal resulting in an optical frequency reference with a short-term stability of $3\times10^{-17}<\Delta f/f <1\times10^{-15}$ at 1 s and a systematic-limited repeatability of $\Delta f/f \sim 2 \times 10^{-16}$. Improvement by $10^2-10^3$ of the constraints on the variability of several important fundamental constants also appears possible. Here we present the results of the first phase of these experiments. Specifically, we have evaluated several high energy band-gap crystals (Th:NaYF, Th:YLF, Th:LiCAF, Na$_2$ThF$_6$, LiSAF) for their suitability as a crystal host by a combination of electron beam microprobe measurements, Rutherford Backscattering, and synchrotron excitation/fluorescence measurements. These measurements have shown LiCAF to be the most promising host crystal, and using a $^{232}$Th doped LiCAF crystal, we have performed a mock run of the actual experiment that will be used to search for the isomeric transition in $^{229}$Th. This data indicates that a measurement of the transition energy with a signal to noise ratio (SNR) greater than 30:1 can be achieved at the lowest expected fluorescence rate., Comment: Eurodim Conference Proceedings

We demonstrate a scheme for optical cycling in the polar, diatomic molecule strontium monofluoride (SrF) using the $X ^2\Sigma^+\toA^2\Pi_{1/2}$ electronic transition. SrF's highly diagonal Franck-Condon factors suppress vibrational branching. We eliminate rotational branching by employing a quasi-cycling $N=1\to N^\prime=0$ type transition in conjunction with magnetic field remixing of dark Zeeman sublevels. We observe cycling fluorescence and deflection through radiative force of an SrF molecular beam using this scheme. With straightforward improvements our scheme promises to allow more than $10^5$ photon scatters, possibly enabling the direct laser cooling of SrF.

We describe a novel approach to directly measure the energy of the narrow, low-lying isomeric state in $^{229}$Th. Since nuclear transitions are far less sensitive to environmental conditions than atomic transitions, we argue that the $^{229}$Th optical nuclear transition may be driven inside a host crystal with a high transition Q. This technique might also allow for the construction of a solid-state optical frequency reference that surpasses the precision of current optical clocks, as well as improved limits on the variability of fundamental constants. Based on analysis of the crystal lattice environment, we argue that a precision of $3\times10^{-17}<\Delta f/f <1\times10^{-15}$ after 1 s of photon collection may be achieved with a systematic-limited accuracy of $\Delta f/f \sim 2 \times 10^{-16}$. We propose an approach for studying quantum information and performing high resolution spectroscopy of rotational states of trapped molecular ions using an on-chip superconducting microwave resonator. Molecular ions have several advantages over neutral molecules. Ions can be loaded into deep (1 eV) RF traps and are trapped independent of the electric dipole moment of their rotational transition. Their charge protects them from motional dephasing and prevents collisional loss, allowing 1 s coherence times when used as a quantum memory, with detection of single molecules possible in <10 ms. We are pursuing an experiment to measure the electric dipole moment of the electron using the molecule PbO. This measurement requires the ability to prepare quantum states with orientation of the molecular axis and, simultaneously, alignment of the electron spin perpendicular to this axis. It also requires efficient detection of the evolution of the spin alignment direction within such a state. We describe a series of experiments that have achieved these goals, and the features and limitations of the techniques. We also discuss possible new approaches for improved efficiency in this and similar systems.

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We propose new experiments with high sensitivity to a possible spatial or temporal variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio $\mu \equiv m_e/m_p$. We consider a nearly-degenerate pair of molecular vibrational levels, where each state is associated with a different electronic potential. The change in the splitting between such levels, with respect to a change in $\mu$, can be large both on an absolute scale and relative to the splitting. We demonstrate the existence of such pairs of levels in Cs$_2$. The narrow spectral lines achievable with ultracold Cs$_2$ in these long-lived levels make this system promising for future searches for small variations in $\mu$.

Nuclear spin-dependent parity violation arises from weak interactions between electrons and nucleons, and from nuclear anapole moments. We outline a method to measure such effects, using a Stark-interference technique to determine the mixing between opposite-parity rotational/hyperfine levels of ground-state molecules. The technique is applicable to nuclei over a wide range of atomic number, in diatomic species that are theoretically tractable for interpretation. This should provide data on anapole moments of many nuclei, and on previously unmeasured neutral weak couplings.

We have developed an easy to construct, non-resonant wideband NMR probe. The probe is of the saddle coil geometry and is designed such that the coil itself forms a transmission line. The probe thus requires no tuning or matching elements. We use the probe with a spectrometer whose duplexer circuitry employs a simple RF switch instead of the more common lambda/4 lines, so the entire probe and spectrometer perform in an essentially frequency-independent manner. Despite being designed with electro- and magnetostatic formulas, the probe performs well at frequencies up to 150 MHz and beyond. We expect that with additional design effort, the probe could be modified for use at significantly higher frequencies. Because our construction method relies on commercial circuit fabrication techniques, identical probes can be easily and accurately produced.

The challenge of building a scalable quantum processor requires consolidation of the conflicting requirements of achieving coherent control and preservation of quantum coherence in a large scale quantum system. Moreover, the system should be compatible with miniaturization and integration of quantum circuits. Mesoscopic solid state systems such as superconducting islands and quantum dots feature robust control techniques using local electrical signals and self-evident scaling based on advances in fabrication; however, in general the quantum states of solid state devices tend to decohere rapidly. In contrast, quantum optical systems based on trapped ions and neutral atoms exhibit dramatically better coherence properties, while miniaturization of atomic and molecular systems, and their integration with mesoscopic electrical circuits, remains an important challenge. Below we describe methods for the integration of a single particle system -- an isolated polar molecule -- with mesoscopic solid state devices in a way that produces robust, coherent, quantum-level control. The methods described include the trapping, cooling, detection, coherent manipulation and quantum coupling of isolated polar molecules at sub-micron dimensions near cryogenic stripline microwave resonators. We show that electrostatically trapped polar molecules can exhibit strong confinement and fast, purely electrical gate control. Furthermore, the effect of electrical noise sources, a key issue in quantum information processing, can be suppressed to very low levels via appropriate preparation and manipulation of the polar molecules. Our setup provides a scalable cavity QED-type quantum computer architecture, where entanglement of distant qubits stored in long-lived rotational molecular states is achieved via exchange of microwave photons.

We investigate a hybrid quantum circuit where ensembles of cold polar molecules serve as long-lived quantum memories and optical interfaces for solid state quantum processors. The quantum memory realized by collective spin states (ensemble qubit) is coupled to a high-Q stripline cavity via microwave Raman processes. We show that for convenient trap-surface distances of a few $\mu$m, strong coupling between the cavity and ensemble qubit can be achieved. We discuss basic quantum information protocols, including a swap from the cavity photon bus to the molecular quantum memory, and a deterministic two qubit gate. Finally, we investigate coherence properties of molecular ensemble quantum bits.

We report detailed spectroscopic measurements of the X(0)$[^3\Sigma^+]$(v=0) to B(1)$[^3\Pi]$ (v=5) transition in PbO. Using a Stark-modulated laser absorption technique, we have measured the hyperfine constant of $^{207}$PbO in the B(1) state, as well as B(1)(v=5) rotational constant, X-B isotope shifts, etc. The hyperfine structure of the B(1) state is of interest as a benchmark for calculations of PbO electronic structure, related to experiments to search for the electric dipole moment of the electron., Comment: REVTex 4, 4 pages, 2 figures, updated author information, removed typos

We demonstrate and characterize a high-flux beam source for cold, slow atoms or molecules. The desired species is vaporized using laser ablation, then cooled by thermalization in a cryogenic cell of buffer gas. The beam is formed by particles exiting a hole in the buffer gas cell. We characterize the properties of the beam (flux, forward velocity, temperature) for both an atom (Na) and a molecule (PbO) under varying buffer gas density, and discuss conditions for optimizing these beam parameters. Two large-area, low noise, high speed fluorescence detectors have been built. One detector consists of a photodiode with an area of 28 mm x 28 mm and a low noise transimpedance amplifier. This detector has a input light-equivalent spectral noise density of less than 3 pW/Hz^1/2, can recover from a large scattered light pulse within 10 us, and has a bandwidth of at least 900 kHz. The second detector consists of a 16 mm diameter avalanche photodiode and a low-noise transimpedance amplifier. This detector has an input light-equivalent spectral noise density of 0.08 pW/Hz^1/2, also can recover from a large scattered light pulse within 10 us, and has a bandwidth of 1 MHz., Comment: Submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments

Investigation of P,T-parity nonconservation (PNC) phenomena is of fundamental importance for physics. Experiments to search for PNC effects have been performed on TlF and YbF molecules and are in progress for PbO and PbF molecules. For interpretation of molecular PNC experiments it is necessary to calculate those needed molecular properties which cannot be measured. In particular, electronic densities in heavy-atom cores are required for interpretation of the measured data in terms of the P,T-odd properties of elementary particles or P,T-odd interactions between them. Reliable calculations of the core properties (PNC effect, hyperfine structure etc., which are described by the operators heavily concentrated in atomic cores or on nuclei) usually require accurate accounting for both relativistic and correlation effects in heavy-atom systems. In this paper, some basic aspects of the experimental search for PNC effects in heavy-atom molecules and the computational methods used in their electronic structure calculations are discussed. The latter include the generalized relativistic effective core potential (GRECP) approach and the methods of nonvariational and variational one-center restoration of correct shapes of four-component spinors in atomic cores after a two-component GRECP calculation of a molecule. Their efficiency is illustrated with calculations of parameters of the effective P,T-odd spin-rotational Hamiltonians in the molecules PbF, HgF, YbF, BaF, TlF, and PbO., Comment: Progress in Theoretical Chemistry and Physics, in press (2005)

We demonstrate the production of ultracold polar RbCs molecules in their vibronic ground state, via photoassociation of laser-cooled atoms followed by a laser-stimulated state transfer process. The resulting sample of $X ^1\Sigma^+ (v=0)$ molecules has a translational temperature of $\sim100 \mu$K and a narrow distribution of rotational states. With the method described here it should be possible to produce samples even colder in all degrees of freedom, as well as other bi-alkali species.

Weak interactions within a nucleus generate a nuclear spin dependent parity violating electromagnetic moment; the anapole moment. In heavy nuclei, the anapole moment is the dominant contribution to spin-dependent atomic parity violation. We analyze a method to measure the nuclear anapole moment through the electric dipole transition it induces between hyperfine states of the ground level. The method requires tight confinement of the atoms to position them at the anti-node of a standing wave driving the anapole-induced E1 transiton. We explore the necessary limits in the number of atoms, excitation fields, trap type, interrogation method, and systematic tests necessary for such measurements in francium, the heaviest alkali., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We report first configuration interaction calculations of hyperfine constants A_\parallel and the effective electric field W_d acting on the electric dipole moment of the electron, in two excited electronic states of ^{207}PbO. The obtained hyperfine constants, A_\parallel = -3826 MHz for the a(1) state and A_\parallel = 4887 MHz for the B(1) state, are in very good agreement with the experimental data, -4113 MHz and 5000 \pm 200 MHz, respectively. We find W_d = -(6.1 ^{+1.8}_{-0.6}) 10^{24} Hz/(e cm) for a(1), and W_d = (8.0 \pm 1.6) 10^{24} Hz/(e cm) for B(1). The obtained values are analyzed and compared to recent relativistic coupled cluster results and a semiempirical estimate of W_d for the a(1) state., Comment: 6 pages, REVTeX4 style, submitted to Pthys.Rev.A

We discuss the possibility of trapping polar molecules in the standing-wave electromagnetic field of a microwave resonant cavity. Such a trap has several novel features that make it very attractive for the development of ultracold molecule sources. Using commonly available technologies, microwave traps can be built with large depth (up to several Kelvin) and acceptance volume (up to several cm^3), suitable for efficient loading with currently available sources of cold polar molecules. Unlike most previous traps for molecules, this technology can be used to confine the strong-field seeking absolute ground state of the molecule, in a free-space maximum of the microwave electric field. Such ground state molecules should be immune to inelastic collisional losses. We calculate elastic collision cross-sections for the trapped molecules, due to the electrical polarization of the molecules at the trap center, and find that they are extraordinarily large. Thus, molecules in a microwave trap should be very amenable to sympathetic and/or evaporative cooling. The combination of these properties seems to open a clear path to producing large samples of polar molecules at temperatures much lower than has been possible previously., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The metastable a(1)[^3\Sigma^+] state of PbO has been suggested as a suitable system in which to search for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron. We report here the development of experimental techniques allowing high-sensitivity measurements of Zeeman and Stark effects in this system, similar to those required for an EDM search. We observe Zeeman quantum beats in fluorescence from a vapor cell, with shot-noise limited extraction of the quantum beat frequencies, high counting rates, and long coherence times. We argue that improvement in sensitvity to the electron EDM by at least two orders of magnitude appears possible using these techniques., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
