Abstract

Background: A progressive MS (PMS) type is a negative prognostic factor for clinical outcomes. The majority of people with PMS present motor (e.g. walking) and cognitive impairments while also reporting fatigue. Objectively, fatigue can be measured by the capacity to sustain a motor or cognitive task which is termed fatigability. Currently, the prevalence of fatigability in PMS is unknown, as well as potential explanatory factors. Aims: To investigate the prevalence of walking and cognitive fatigability in PMS and to explore potential explanatory factors in a large sample of PMS patients with cognitive impairments. Cognitive rehabilitation programs for healthy older adults with subjective cognitive decline consist of brain training, strategy training, and multimodal interventions. In general, these interventions show small improvements within the trained domain (near-transfer effects), but limited benefits on untrained cognitive domains or everyday functioning (far-transfer effects). Multimodal approaches might be more effective to enhance multiple cognitive domains and everyday functioning. However, the current lack of clear efficacy of cognitive rehabilitation techniques in healthy older adults might be explained by methodological shortcomings of previous studies and the notion that aging-related cognitive decline is not considered to reflect impairments. Future interventions with longer follow-up duration should therefore focus more on psychoeducation on normal cognitive aging and target self-efficacy and worrying to diminish subjective cognitive complaints.

Abstract

Allergic reaction to liposomal amphotericin B is rare. We report a case of cardiac arrest in a 64-year-old woman following liposomal amphotericin B infusion, requiring resuscitation. We also present the results of subsequent skin prick and intradermal testing to liposomal amphotericin on the patient and three healthy controls, highlighting the need for further research into the immunopathogenesis of this reaction.

Abstract

A microstructural characterization was made on YBa2Cu3O7 samples prepared by on a step-edged substrate as well as TlBa2Ca2Cu3Ox (Tl-1223) polycrystalline films with single grain boundaries. The study investigated the activation energy via measurements of current conduction across each material's grain boundaries. It revealed the influence of a polycrystalline's grain boundaries on the negative curvature of the Tl-1223 sample.

Abstract

Background: The Multiple Sclerosis Outcome Assessments Consortium (MSOAC) was formed by the National MS Society to develop improved measures of multiple sclerosis (MS)-related disability. Objectives: (1) To assess the current literature and available data on functional performance outcome measures (PerfOs) and (2) to determine suitability of using PerfOs to quantify MS disability in MS clinical trials. Methods: (1) Identify disability dimensions common in MS; (2) conduct a comprehensive literature review of measures for those dimensions; (3) develop an MS Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) data standard; (4) create a database of standardized, pooled clinical trial data; (5) analyze the pooled data to assess psychometric properties of candidate measures; and (6) work with regulatory agencies to use the measures as primary or secondary outcomes in MS clinical trials. Conclusion: Considerable data exist supporting measures of the functional domains ambulation, manual dexterity, vision, and cognition. A CDISC standard for MS (http://www.cdisc.org/therapeutic#MS) was published, allowing pooling of clinical trial data. MSOAC member organizations contributed clinical data from 16 trials, including 14,370 subjects. Data from placebo-arm subjects are available to qualified researchers. This integrated, standardized dataset is being analyzed to support qualification of disability endpoints by regulatory agencies. Abstract

Distance perception refers to a process in which an observer perceives an interval between two points in space. The interval does not have to be linear, but perception of a straight-line distance has been most extensively studied. The distance can be defined between the observer and an external object (egocentric distance) or between two external objects (exocentric distance), and perception of these two types of distance tends to show different characteristics (e.g., Loomis et al. 1992). Distance perception and depth perception are often considered synonymous. However, they can also be subtly distinguished such that depth perception specifically refers to perception of exocentric distance along the observer’s line of sight.
