Sectors of the Campania region (southern Italy), where pyroclastic airfall deposits cover carbonate slopes, have frequently experienced debris avalanches and debris flows. These landslides are triggered by heavy rainfall and in the last century caused severe destruction and hundreds of deaths. Their occurrence is controlled by the interaction of several factors, both natural and human induced. The initial failure is linked with the presence of morphological discontinuities such as rocky scarps and road cuts, which interrupt the stratigraphical continuity of an “infinite slope”. Here the main criteria for susceptibility analysis are defined trying to develop a procedure for identify highly-susceptible sources, runout and invasion areas.

This paper summarizes the results of a study focused on the hydrogeological characterization and recognition of groundwater resources in continental southern Italy, developed under the European INTERREG IIC Programme. The study reconstructed up-to-date scientific knowledge regarding aquifers, groundwater circulation schemes and groundwater resources exploitation in the administrative regions of southern Italy included in the Objective I (Molise, Campania, Basilicata, Puglia and Calabria). In this paper, the methodological approaches applied to synthesize and homogenize bibliographic data collected from the hydrogeological literature and to set a regional hydrogeological mapping are described. Results presented are three hydrogeological maps, 1:300,000 scale, showing hydrogeological units and groundwater flow schemes that are relevant in the regional hydrogeological context, and a brief description of principal types of aquifer and groundwater resources of continental southern Italy.

In the last decades the Valtellina valley (northern Italy) has suffered from several catastrophic rainfall-induced shallow landslide events inducing debris flows. The growing of urban settlements has driven population to colonize areas at risk, where prediction and prevention actions are nowadays a challenge for geoscientists. Debris flows are widespread in mountain areas because occurring along steep slopes covered by loose regolith or soil coverings. Under such conditions, heavy rainfall events might cause slope instabilities due to the increase in pore water pressure depending on hydraulic and geotechnical properties as well as thicknesses of soil covers. Despite the initial small volumes, debris flows hazard is significant due to the sediment entrainment and volume increase of the involved material, high velocity and runout distance. In such a framework, predicting timing and position of slope instabilities as well as paths, volumes, and velocity of potential debris flows is of great significance to assess areas at risk and to settle appropriate countermeasures. In this work, back analyses of debris flows occurred in representative sites of the Valtellina valley were carried out with the aim of understanding their features and providing a methodological basis for slope to valley scale susceptibility mapping. Numerical modeling of slope stability and runout was completed allowing the identification of the detachment, transport, and deposition zones of previously occurred landslides, including other potentially unstable ones. Results from this study emphasize issues in performing distributed numerical modeling depending on the availability of spatially distributed soil properties which hamper the quality of physicsbased models. In the framework of hazard mapping and risk strategy assessments, the approach presented can be used to evaluate the possible runout phase of new potential debris flows recognized by geomorphological evidence and numerical modeling. Furthermore, analyses aimed to the probabilistic assessment of landslide spatial distribution, related to a specific value of rainfall threshold, can be considered as potentially applicable to multi-scale landslide hazard mapping and extendable to other similar mountainous frameworks. Nowadays the phenomenon of Global Warming is unequivocal, as confirmed by the latest reports of the IPCC and studies of the climate-change impacts on ecosystems, global economy, and populations. Among these analyses the effect of climate change on groundwater is a very relevant task especially for regions whose economic and social development depends chiefly on groundwater availability, as for the southern Italy. In such a territorial framework, this research was focused on analyzing: i) comparison of precipitation and air temperature obtained by Regional Climate Models (RCMs) and 15 meteorological time series recorded in a part (1950-1996) of the "historical experiment" period (1950-2005); ii) effects of climate change on scenarios of air temperature (T) and precipitation (P) and, consequently, on scenarios of actual evapotranspiration (ETR) and effective precipitation Pe (P - ETR). The latter was considered as a proxy of groundwater recharge of the principal aquifer systems of the region, represented chiefly by the karst aquifers. To achieve a detailed hydro-climatological characterization, an Ensemble of 15 RCMs (E15) derived from the European Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (EURO-CORDEX), at a spatial resolution of 0.11° (~12 km), was analyzed. Specifically, two IPCC Representative Concentration Pathways of greenhouse gases (RCP4.5 and RCP8.5) were considered. The E15 was calibrated in the validation period (1950-1996) by a statistical comparison with data observed by the regional meteorological network managed by the former National Hydrological Service (SIMN), Department of Naples, which was active in the period 1921-1999. As a principal result, the E15 was found with a statistical structure very similar to those of observed annual precipitation (OBSP) and mean annual air temperature (OBST), characterized by a very similar frequency distribution. Accordingly, an inferential statistical approach was performed for calibrating E15 precipitation (E15P) and air temperature (E15T) based on the compensation of the difference with OBSP (+7%) and OBST (-16%). The E15 projects a reduction in precipitation and an increase in air temperature under both RCPs, with a divergence point between the two scenarios occurring by about 2040. As a principal result, Pe shows declining trends for both RCP scenarios, reaching a decrease of the 11-yrs moving average down to -20%, for RCP4.5, and -50%, for RCP8.5, even if characterized by relevant inter-annual fluctuations. The assessment of timing and potential locations of rainfallinduced shallow landslides through mathematical models represents a challenge for the assessment of landslide hazard, especially in cases with limited or not available data. In fact, modeling slope hydrological response and stability requires accurate estimates of unsaturated/saturated hydraulic and geotechnical properties of materials involved in landsliding, as well as climate and topography. Such aspect is relevant for the prediction of location and timing of landslide events, which is greatly needed to reduce their catastrophic effects in terms of economic losses and casualties. To such a scope, we present the comparison of results of two physics-based models applied to the assessment of susceptibility to shallow rainfall-induced landslides in Valtellina region (northern Italy). The analyses were carried out considering effects of availability, resolution and type of data concerning spatial distribution, thickness and properties of soils coverings. For such a scope, the Transient Rainfall Infiltration and Grid-Based Regional Slope-Stability (TRIGRS) and the Climatic Rainfall Hydrogeological Modeling Experiment (CHRyME) models were considered. Artificial reservoirs are crucial infrastructures, since they allow for the management of the water resource they store and for their role in the hydroelectric production. Water is modulated and stored inside artificial basins built upstream of the dams for hydroelectric, industrial, drinking, irrigation, and flood mitigation purposes. However, as time passes, the deposition of solid material, transported by rivers flowing into the reservoir, reduces its storage capacity. In this work, a novel physicallybased erosion and sediment transport model developed by Politecnico di Milano (SMART-SED) is used to estimate dam filling in different Italian geological contexts. The present model differs from others in the literature since it can automatically detect drainage zones and it works at a basin scale, requiring few input parameters that can be easily downloaded from global or government databases. Moreover, it is based on robust and unconditionally stable numerical techniques, and it guarantees the mass conservation. The proposed model was applied to four watersheds, two in the Southern Alps and two in the Southern Apennines, with catchment areas ranging from 5 to 48 km². After the model calibration on the local geological context, a validation of the obtained results was accomplished considering different time intervals and the available sediment filling data. It was observed that the SMART-SED model, initially developed for the evaluation of fluvial hazard and of sediment transport in mountainous areas, was also suitable for the estimation of dam filling. Results indeed show a precise approximation of the order of magnitude of the cumulative sediment volume produced inside the catchments and transported to the water basins. In the framework of a complex problem affecting the production of "clean" energy in a changing world, SMART-SED could become a useful tool also for dam management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
