Abstract

The growing reliance on software in vehicles has given rise to the concept of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), fundamentally reshaping the vehicles and the automotive industry. This survey explores the cybersecurity and privacy challenges posed by SDVs, which increasingly integrate features like Over-the-Air (OTA) updates and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication. While these advancements enhance vehicle capabilities and flexibility, they also come with a flip side: increased exposure to security risks including API vulnerabilities, third-party software risks, and supply-chain threats. The transition to SDVs also raises significant privacy concerns, with vehicles collecting vast amounts of sensitive data, such as location and driver behavior, that could be exploited using inference attacks. This work aims to provide a detailed overview of security threats, mitigation strategies, and privacy risks in SDVs, primarily through a literature review, enriched with insights from a targeted questionnaire with industry experts. Key topics include defining SDVs, comparing them to Connected Vehicles (CVs) and Autonomous Vehicles (AVs), discussing the security challenges associated with OTA updates and the impact of SDV features on data privacy. Our findings highlight the need for robust security frameworks, standardized communication protocols, and privacy-preserving techniques to address the issues of SDVs. This work ultimately emphasizes the importance of a multi-layered defense strategy,integrating both in-vehicle and cloud-based security solutions, to safeguard future SDVs and increase user trust.

2. High and Low Resolution Tradeoffs in Roadside Multimodal Sensing

Abstract

Designing roadside sensing for intelligent transportation applications requires balancing cost and performance,especially when choosing between high and low-resolution sensors. The tradeoff is challenging due to sensor heterogeneity,where different sensors produce unique data modalities due to varying physical principles. High-resolution LiDAR offers detailed point cloud, while 4D millimeter-wave radar, despite providing sparser data, delivers velocity information useful for distinguishing objects based on movement patterns. To assess whether reductions in spatial resolution can be compensated by the informational richness of sensors, particularly in recognizing both vehicles and vulnerable road users (VRUs), we propose Residual Fusion Net (ResFusionNet) to fuse multimodal data for 3D object detection. This enables a quantifiable tradeoff between spatial resolution and information richness across different modalities. Furthermore, we introduce a sensor placement algorithm utilizing probabilistic modeling to manage uncertainties in sensor visibility influenced by environmental or human-related factors. Through simulation-assisted ex-ante evaluation on a real-world testbed, our findings show marked marginal gains in detecting VRUs--an average of 16.7% for pedestrians and 11% for cyclists--when merging velocity-encoded radar with LiDAR, compared to LiDAR only configurations. Additionally, experimental results from 300 runs reveal a maximum loss of 11.5% and a average of 5.25% in sensor coverage due to uncertainty factors. These findings underscore the potential of using low spatial resolution but information-rich sensors to enhance detection capabilities for vulnerable road users while highlighting the necessity of thoroughly evaluating sensor modality heterogeneity, traffic participant diversity, and operational uncertainties when making sensor tradeoffs in practical applications., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The evolution of Connected Vehicles (CVs) has introduced significant advancements in both in-vehicle and vehicle-edge platforms, creating a highly connected ecosystem. These advancements, however, have heightened exposure to cybersecurity risks. This work reviews emerging security challenges in the CV ecosystem from a new perspective, focusing on the integration of in-vehicle platforms such as the infotainment system and vehicle-edge platforms. By analyzing case studies such as Android Automotive, Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT), and the Robot Operating System (ROS), we identify the primary security threats, including malware attacks, data manipulation, and Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. The discussion extends to privacy concerns and the lack of trust-building mechanisms in CVs, highlighting how these gaps can be exploited. To mitigate these risks, we retrieve solutions drawn from the broader field of Internet of Things (IoT) security research, including Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and trust-based systems. The proposed framework aims to increase the trustworthiness of devices within the CV ecosystem. Finally, we identify future research directions in adaptive mechanisms and cross-domain security.

Abstract

Modern cars technologies are evolving quickly. They collect a variety of personal data and treat it on behalf of the car manufacturer to improve the drivers' experience. The precise terms of such a treatment are stated within the privacy policies accepted by the user when buying a car or through the infotainment system when it is first started. This paper uses a double lens to assess people's privacy while they drive a car. The first approach is objective and studies the readability of privacy policies that comes with cars. We analyse the privacy policies of twelve car brands and apply well-known readability indices to evaluate the extent to which privacy policies are comprehensible by all drivers. The second approach targets drivers' opinions to extrapolate their privacy concerns and trust perceptions. We design a questionnaire to collect the opinions of 88 participants and draw essential statistics about them. Our combined findings indicate that privacy is insufficiently understood at present as an issue deriving from driving a car, hence future technologies should be tailored to make people more aware of the issue and to enable them to express their preferences.

Abstract

The first measurement of the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen was performed by the FAMU collaboration in 2016. The results provide evidence that the transfer rate rises with the temperature in the range 104-300 K. This paper presents the results of the experiment done in 2018 to extend the measurements towards lower (70 K) and higher (336 K) temperatures. The 2018 results confirm the temperature dependence of the muon transfer rate observed in 2016 and sets firm ground for comparison with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the temperature dependence of muon transfer rate from $\mu$p atoms to oxygen between 100 and 300 K. Data were obtained from the X-ray spectra of delayed events in gaseous target H$_2$/O$_2$ exposed to a muon beam. Based on the data, we determined the muon transfer energy dependence up to 0.1 eV, showing an 8-fold increase in contrast with the predictions of constant rate in the low energy limit. This work set constraints on theoretical models of muon transfer, and is of fundamental importance for the measurement of the hyperfine splitting of $\mu$p by the FAMU collaboration., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Abstract

Society relies on technology and innovation (T&I) to tackle some of its great challenges, and it has been given even more importance since the increasing concern over sustainability issues. A particular concern is the Amazon rainforest’s impact on sustainability and what this means for the planet. The paper analyzes how research on technology and innovation in the Amazon region is addressing sustainability issues. This wide-ranging intentional approach has led to an integrative picture, providing the first systematic literature review that connects these themes within a specific region, resulting in 222 academic publications from 1992 to 2020. The main findings indicate that: (1) 40.1% of the studies relate to the management field, which percentage increased significantly after 2015; (2) the dispersion of the studied themes confirms the plurality of Amazonian environmental wealth, but their lack of integration represents a constraint to the development of public policies; (3) market and public policies are both powerful but conflicting innovation drivers; (4) although studies on innovations address greenhouse gas emissions, innovation also includes forest degradation activities; and (5) there are different drivers and applications behind initiatives in technology and innovation, which depend on the local context.

Abstract

The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen $\Delta E_{hfs}(\mu^-p)1S$. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: $\mu p$ are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy $\Delta E_{hfs}\approx0.182$~eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding $H_2$ molecules, the $\mu p$ is quickly de-excited and accelerated by $\sim2/3$ of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the $\mu Z$ formed by muon transfer $(\mu p) +Z \rightarrow (\mu Z)^*+p$, a reaction whose rate depends on the $\mu p$ kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the $(\mu Z)^*$ cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. Abstract

We present the results of a search for dark matter WIMPs in the mass range below 20 GeV/c^2 using a target of low-radioactivity argon. The data were obtained using the DarkSide-50 apparatus at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS). The analysis is based on the ionization signal, for which the DarkSide-50 time projection chamber is fully efficient at 0.1 keVee. The observed rate in the detector at 0.5 keVee is about 1.5 events/keVee/kg/day and is almost entirely accounted for by known background sources. We obtain a 90% C.L. exclusion limit above 1.8 GeV/c^2 for the spin-independent cross section of dark matter WIMPs on nucleons, extending the exclusion region for dark matter below previous limits in the range 1.8-6 GeV/c^2., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; submission accepted by journal

The DarkSide-50 direct-detection dark matter experiment is a dual-phase argon time projection chamber operating at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. This paper reports on the blind analysis of a (16,660+-270) kg d exposure using a target of low-radioactivity argon extracted from underground sources. Abstract

We report the measurement of the longitudinal diffusion constant in liquid argon with the DarkSide-50 dual-phase time projection chamber. The measurement is performed at drift electric fields of 100 V/cm, 150 V/cm, and 200 V/cm using high statistics $^{39}$Ar decays from atmospheric argon. We derive an expression to describe the pulse shape of the electroluminescence signal (S2) in dual-phase TPCs. The derived S2 pulse shape is fit to events from the uppermost portion of the TPC in order to characterize the radial dependence of the signal. The results are provided as inputs to the measurement of the longitudinal diffusion constant DL, which we find to be (4.12 $\pm$ 0.04) cm$^2$/s for a selection of 140keV electron recoil events in 200V/cm drift field and 2.8kV/cm extraction field. To study the systematics of our measurement we examine datasets of varying event energy, field strength, and detector volume yielding a weighted average value for the diffusion constant of (4.09 $\pm$ 0.09) cm$^2$ /s. The measured longitudinal diffusion constant is observed to have an energy dependence, and within the studied energy range the result is systematically lower than other results in the literature.

Abstract

The FAMU experiment aims to accurately measure the hyperfine splitting of the ground state of the muonic hydrogen atom. A measurement of the transfer rate of muons from hydrogen to heavier gases is necessary for this purpose. In June 2014, within a preliminary experiment, a pressurized gas-target was exposed to the pulsed low-energy muon beam at the RIKEN RAL muon facility (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK). The main goal of the test was the characterization of both the noise induced by the pulsed beam and the X-ray detectors. The apparatus, to some extent rudimental, has served admirably to this task. Technical results have been published that prove the validity of the choices made and pave the way for the next steps. This paper presents the results of physical relevance of measurements of the muon transfer rate to carbon dioxide, oxygen, and argon from non-thermalized excited mu-p atoms. The analysis methodology and the approach to the systematics errors are useful for the subsequent study of the transfer rate as function of the kinetic energy of the mu-p currently under way., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

A Geant4-based Monte Carlo package named G4DS has been developed to simulate the response of DarkSide-50, an experiment operating since 2013 at LNGS, designed to detect WIMP interactions in liquid argon. In the process of WIMP searches, DarkSide-50 has achieved two fundamental milestones: the rejection of electron recoil background with a power of ~10^7, using the pulse shape discrimination technique, and the measurement of the residual 39Ar contamination in underground argon, ~3 orders of magnitude lower with respect to atmospheric argon. These results rely on the accurate simulation of the detector response to the liquid argon scintillation, its ionization, and electron-ion recombination processes. This work provides a complete overview of the DarkSide Monte Carlo and of its performance, with a particular focus on PARIS, the custom-made liquid argon response model., Comment: 29 pages, 23 figures, 1 table

Abstract

Solar and lunar eclipses are indeed the first astronomical phenomena which have been recorded since very early antiquity. Their periodicities gave birth to the first luni-solar calendars based on the Methonic cycle since the sixth century before Christ. The Saros cycle of 18.03 years is due to the Chaldean astronomical observations. Their eclipses’ observations reported by Ptolemy in the Almagest (Alexandria of Egypt, about 150 a.C.) enabled modern astronomers to recognize the irregular rotation rate of the Earth. The Earth’s rotation is some hours in delay after the last three millenia if we use the present rotation to simulate the 721 b.C. total eclipse in Babylon. This is one of the most important issues in modern celestial mechanics, along with the Earth’s axis nutation of 18 yr (discovered in 1737), precession of 25.7 Kyr (discovered by Ipparchus around 150 b.C.) and obliquity of 42 Kyr motions (discovered by Arabic astronomers and assessed from the Middle Ages to the modern era, IX to XVIII centuries). Newtonian and Einstenian gravitational theories explain fully these tiny motions, along with the Lense–Thirring gravitodynamic effect, which required great experimental accuracy. The most accurate lunar and solar theories, or their motion in analytical or numerical form, allow us to predict—along with the lunar limb profile recovered by a Japanese lunar orbiter—the appearance of total, annular solar eclipses or lunar occultations for a given place on Earth. The observation of these events, with precise timing, may permit us to verify the sphericity of the solar profile and its variability. The variation of the solar diameter on a global scale was claimed firstly by Angelo Secchi in the 1860s and more recently by Jack Eddy in 1978. In both cases, long and accurate observational campaigns started in Rome (1877–1937) and Greenwich Observatories, as well as at Yale University and the NASA and US Naval Observatory (1979–2011) with eclipses and balloon-borne heliometric observations. The IOTA/ES and US sections as well as the ICRA continued the eclipse campaigns. The global variations of the solar diameter over a decadal timescale, and at the millarcsecond level, may reflect some variation in solar energy output, which may explain some past climatic variations (such as the Allerød and Dryas periods in Pleistocene), involving the outer layers of the Sun. “An eclipse never comes alone”; in the eclipse season, lasting about one month, we can have also lunar eclipses. Including the penumbral lunar eclipses, the probability of occurrence is equi-distributed amongst lunar and solar eclipses, but while the lunar eclipses are visible for a whole hemisphere at once, the solar eclipses are not. The color of the umbral shadow on the Moon was known since antiquity, and Galileo (1632, Dialogo sopra i Massimi Sistemi del Mondo) shows clearly these phenomena from copper color to a totally dark, eclipsed full Moon. Three centuries later, André Danjon was able to correlate that umbral color with the 11-year cycle of solar activity. The forthcoming American total solar eclipse of 8 April 2024 will be probably the eclipse with the largest mediatic impact of the history; we wish that also the scientific impulse toward solar physics and astronomy will be relevant, and the measure of the solar diameter with Baily’s beads is indeed one of the topics significantly related to the Sun–Earth connections.

The paper presents the first results of a documentary research aimed at mapping specific actions or programmes addressed to holders of international protection, asylum seekers and migrants carried out by public and private universities, in Italy. The research reached a total of 98 universities, using the universities’ official websites as primary sources. From the data it emerges that universities are implementing both integration projects within the university education framework and projects of hosting, as well as social and cultural inclusion projects. The mapping pointed out a diverse and complex framework of interventions, together with potentialities and paths that universities could follow to develop or activate new services in terms of social responsibility as well as of research to better understand migratory phenomena. Le azioni degli Atenei italiani rivolte ai rifugiati, ai richiedenti asilo e ai migranti: una prima mappatura. Il contributo presenta i primi risultati di una ricerca documentale che ha avuto come obiettivo quello di mappare le azioni rivolte ai titolari di protezione internazionale, ai richiedenti asilo e ai migranti realizzate in Italia dagli Atenei pubblici e privati. La ricerca ha interessato un totale di 98 istituzioni universitarie, utilizzando come fonti primarie i siti ufficiali degli Atenei. Dai dati emerge che le università realizzano sia progetti di inserimento all’interno di un percorso formativo universitario, sia progetti di accoglienza e inclusione sociale e culturale. La mappatura ha fatto emergere un quadro di interventi variegato e complesso, insieme a potenzialità e strade che le università potrebbero percorrere per sviluppare o attivare nuovi servizi in un’ottica di responsabilità sociale, oltre che di ricerca sulla comprensione dei fenomeni migratori.

Abstract

This paper describes the design, fabrication, commissioning and use of a CALibration source Insertion System (CALIS) in the DarkSide-50 direct dark matter search experiment. CALIS deploys radioactive sources into the liquid scintillator veto to characterize the detector response and detection efficiency of the DarkSide-50 Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber, and the surrounding 30 t organic liquid scintillator neutron veto. It was commissioned in September 2014 and has been used successfully in several gamma and neutron source campaigns since then. Abstract

Measurements were made of scintillation light yield of alpha particles from the $^{222}$Rn decay chain within the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. The light yield was found to increase as the applied electric field increased, with alphas in a 200 V/cm electric field exhibiting a 2% increase in light yield compared to alphas in no field., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

DarkSide-50 is a detector for dark matter candidates in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). It utilizes a liquid argon time projection chamber (LAr TPC) for the inner main detector. The TPC is surrounded by a liquid scintillator veto (LSV) and a water Cherenkov veto detector (WCV). The LSV and WCV, both instrumented with PMTs, act as the neutron and cosmogenic muon veto detectors for DarkSide-50. This paper describes the electronics and data acquisition system used for these two detectors.
