Flow-Induced Vibrations (FIV) of an elastically mounted circular cylinder are investigated by means of two-dimensional simulations. A mechanical coupling between cross-flow translation and rotation provides a single degree-of-freedom system in which the coupled rotational oscillations affect the fluid-structure dynamics. The structural response of this system is investigated exploring the design space spanned by reduced velocity, coupling radius, and phase density ratio. The kinematic coupling introduces the rotation-induced shear layer modifications, as well as an equivalent inertia effect connected to the coupling force. Such a computational campaign is carried out by means of direct numerical simulations with immersed boundary forcing at a Reynolds number equal to 100. The investigated system exhibits the wake-body synchronisation features typical of lock-in for non-rotating cylinders. However, the kinematic coupling provides a novel FIV scenario, in which the oscillation amplitude is magnified in the locked configurations with respect to the forced rotation case. Furthermore, it is found a significant widening of the reduced velocity domain where the lock-in condition takes place. In view of the proposed analyses, it is determined that the coupled rotation guarantees the phase alignment between lift and displacement necessary to sustain the lock-in condition, making the oscillation amplitude grow indefinitely with the reduced velocity. This is inherently achieved due to the rotational shear layer and the added mass contribution, which prevent the exact match between oscillation frequency and system natural frequency in vacuum. The outcomes of this study might potentially lead to innovative water energy harvesters offering larger power outputs and extended optimal operating regions.

We propose an isogeometric approach to model the deformation of active thin films using layered, nonlinear, Kirchhoff Love shells. Isogeometric Collocation and Galerkin formulations are employed to discretize the electrophysiological and mechanical sub-problems, respectively, with the possibility to adopt different element and time-step sizes. Numerical tests illustrate the capabilities of the active stress based approach to effectively simulate the contraction of thin films in both quasi-static and dynamic conditions.

This study investigates the emission of cations from silica samples by single-cycle THz pulses, focusing on the influence of pulse polarity. Negative THz pulses were found to efficiently trigger the evaporation of cations from nanoneedles in amorphous silica samples compared to positive pulses. Conversely, this dependence on pulse polarity could not be found in samples with metallic behaviour such as LaB$_6$ and when multi-cycle pulses in different frequency ranges such as ultraviolet (UV) are used. First-principles simulations focus on silica under THz laser irradiation and show critical fields for ion evaporation of hydroxyl groups from Si(OH)$_4$, which serves as a model precursor molecule for the amorphous solid matrix. To explain our experimental results, we propose a simplified theoretical model that determines the role of the polarity of the THz pulse by taking into account the differences in electron mobility between silica and semi-metallic samples. The study explores the nonlinear microscopic mechanisms of atomic evaporation under external static and THz laser fields and clarifies the dynamics of THz-enhanced APT and related applications.

In vascular targeted therapies, blood-borne carriers should realize sustained drug release from the luminal side towards the diseased tissue. In this context, such carriers are required to firmly adhere to the vessel walls for a sufficient period of time while resisting force perturbations induced by the blood flow and circulating cells. Here, a hybrid computational model, combining a Lattice Boltzmann (LBM) and Immersed Boundary Methods (IBM), is proposed for predicting the strength of adhesion of particles in narrow capillaries (7.5 $\mu \mathrm{m})$ traversed by blood cells. While flowing down the capillary, globular and biconcave deformable cells ( $7 \mu \mathrm{m}$ ) encounter $2 \mu \mathrm{m}$ discoidal particles, adhering to the vessel walls. Particles present aspect ratios ranging from $0.25$ to $1.0$ and a mechanical stiffness varying from rigid $(\mathrm{Ca}=0)$ to soft $\left(\mathrm{Ca}=10^{-3}\right)$. In this paper, the dynamic of inertial capsules into microfluidic bifurcations is studied. The fluid evolution is based on the solution of the BGK -- lattice Boltzmann scheme including a forcing term accounting for immersed geometries. The dynamic-Immersed Boundary forcing strategy is adopted for imposing no-slip boundary conditions on moving deformable or rigid structures, while, on fixed immersed geometries the Bouzidi-Firdaouss-Lallemand second-order bounce back technique is implemented. The proposed computational framework is employed to detail dynamics and deformation of rigid and deformable capsules traveling into a branching duct. This journey is characterized in terms of i) the capsule/bifurcation interaction depending on the sharpness of the branching channels junction; ii) daughter branches aperture angle; iii) occlusion ratio, the ratio between capsule size and main channel diameter; iv) flowing capsules stiffness; v) number of flowing particles.

In this work, a dynamic-Immersed--Boundary method combined with a BGK-Lattice--Boltzmann technique is developed and critically discussed. The fluid evolution is obtained on a three-dimensional lattice with 19 reticular velocities (D3Q19 computational molecule) while the immersed body surface is modeled as a collection of Lagrangian points responding to an elastic potential and a bending resistance. A moving least squares reconstruction is used to accurately interpolate flow quantities and the forcing field needed to enforce the boundary condition on immersed bodies. The proposed model is widely validated against well known benchmark data for rigid and deformable objects. Rigid transport is validated by computing the settling of a sphere under gravity for five different conditions. Then, the tumbling of inertial particles with different shape is considered, recovering the Jefferey orbit for a prolate spheroid. Moreover, the revolution period for an oblate spheroid and for a disk-like particle is obtained as a function of the Reynolds number. The existence of a critical Reynolds number is demonstrated for both cases above which revolution is inhibited. The transport of deformable objects is also considered. The steady deformation of a membrane under shear for three different mechanical stiffness is assessed. Then, the tumbling of a weakly-deformable spheroid under shear is systematically analyzed as a function strain stiffness, bending resistance and membrane mass.

The present work generalizes the analytical results of Petrikaite (2016) to a market where more than two firms interact. As a consequence, for a generic number of firms in the oligopoly model described by Janssen et al (2005), the relationship between the critical discount factor which sustains the monopoly collusive allocation and the share of perfectly informed buyers is non-monotonic, reaching a unique internal point of minimum. The first section locates the work within the proper economic framework. The second section hosts the analytical computations and the mathematical reasoning needed to derive the desired generalization, which mainly relies on the Leibniz rule for the differentiation under the integral sign and the Bounded Convergence Theorem.

The reliability of cardiovascular computational models depends on the accurate solution of the hemodynamics, the realistic characterization of the hyperelastic and electric properties of the tissues along with the correct description of their interaction. The resulting fluid-structure-electrophysiology interaction (FSEI) thus requires an immense computational power, usually available in large supercomputing centers, and requires long time to obtain results even if multi-CPU processors are used (MPI acceleration). In recent years, graphics processing units (GPUs) have emerged as a convenient platform for high performance computing, as they allow for considerable reductions of the time-to-solution. This approach is particularly appealing if the tool has to support medical decisions that require solutions within reduced times and possibly obtained by local computational resources. Accordingly, our multi-physics solver has been ported to GPU architectures using CUDA Fortran to tackle fast and accurate hemodynamics simulations of the human heart without resorting to large-scale supercomputers. This work describes the use of CUDA to accelerate the FSEI on heterogeneous clusters, where both the CPUs and GPUs are used in synergistically with minor modifications of the original source code. The resulting GPU accelerated code solves a single heartbeat within a few hours (from three to ten depending on the grid resolution) running on premises computing facility made of few GPU cards, which can be easily installed in a medical laboratory or in a hospital, thus opening towards a systematic computational fluid dynamics (CFD) aided diagnostic.

Modeling the transport of deformable capsules under different flow regimens is crucial in a variety of fields, including oil rheology, blood flow and the dispersion of pollutants. The aim of this study is twofold. Firstly, a combined Lattice Boltzmann-Immersed Boundary (LBM-IB) approach is developed for predicting the transport of inertial deformable capsules. A Moving Least Squares (MLS) scheme has been implemented to correlate the pressure, velocity and force fields of the fluid domain with the capsule dynamics. This computational strategy has been named LBM Dynamic IB. Secondly, this strategy is directly compared with a more conventional approach, named LBM Kinematic IB, where capsules move with the same velocity of the surrounding fluid. Multiple test cases have been considered for assessing the accuracy and efficiency of the Dynamic over Kinematic IB scheme, including the stretching of circular capsules in shear flow, the transport in a plane Poiseuille flow of circular and biconcave capsules, with and without inertia. By monitoring the capsule geometry over time, the two schemes have been documented to be in excellent agreement, especially for low Capillary numbers (Ca $\leq$ 0.01), in the case of non-inertial capsules. Despite a moderate increase in computational burden, the presented LBM Dynamic IB scheme is the sole capable of predicting the dynamics of both non-inertial and inertial deformable capsules. The proposed approach can be efficiently employed for studying the transport of blood cells, cancer cells and nano/micro capsules within a capillary flow.

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) and modal analysis techniques are applied to investigate the flow over a NACA-0012 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 50,000. Three different sweep angles are considered, namely 0, 20 and 40 degrees, for two sweep configurations. Using models for the separation bubbles, Reynolds number and thickness effects are separated from sweep effects. The transitional flow structure is observed to change with sweep angle, with swept cases showing more spanwise-coherent large structures. At 20 degrees sweep angle these structures are perpendicular to the free stream direction, whereas at 40 degrees they are parallel to the leading edge. A good agreement between Fourier analysis of the DNS data and global stability analysis suggests that the changes are due to the emergence in the 40 degree swept case of an unstable global mode. The global mode has coupled acoustic and vortical support, implying a coupling between trailing edge sound production and shear layer instability. Dynamic mode analysis shows the presence of lower frequency non-acoustic modes in the highly swept case that are not present in the unswept case., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures

A fundamental step in the rational design of vascular targeted particles is the firm adhesion at the blood vessel walls. Here, a combined Lattice Boltzmann Immersed Boundary model is presented for predicting the near wall dynamics of circulating particles. A moving least squares algorithm is used to reconstruct the forcing term accounting for the immersed particle, whereas ligand-receptor binding at the particle- wall interface is described via forward and reverse probability distributions. First, it is demonstrated that the model predicts with good accuracy the rolling velocity of tumor cells over an endothelial layer in a microfluidic channel. Then, particle-wall interactions are systematically analyzed in terms of particle geometries (circular, elliptical with aspect ratios 2 and 3), surface ligand densities (0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9), ligand-receptor bond strengths (1 and 2), and Reynolds numbers (Re = 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0). Depending on these conditions, four different particle-wall interaction regimens are identified, namely not adhering, rolling, sliding and firmly adhering particles. The proposed computational strategy can be efficiently used for predicting the near wall dynamics of particles with arbitrary geometries and surface properties and represents a fundamental tool in the rational design of particles for the specific delivery of therapeutic and imaging agents.

In this paper we propose and test the validity of simple and easy-to-implement algorithms within the immersed boundary framework geared towards large scale simulations involving thousands of deformable bodies in highly turbulent flows. First, we introduce a fast moving least squares (fast-MLS) approximation technique with which we speed up the process of building transfer functions during the simulations which leads to considerable reductions in computational time. We compare the accuracy of the fast-MLS against the exact moving least squares (MLS) for the standard problem of uniform flow over a sphere. In order to overcome the restrictions set by the resolution coupling of the Lagrangian and Eulerian meshes in this particular immersed boundary method, we present an adaptive Lagrangian mesh refinement procedure that is capable of drastically reducing the number of required nodes of the basic Lagrangian mesh when the immersed boundaries can move and deform. Finally, a coarse-grained collision detection algorithm is presented which can detect collision events between several Lagrangian markers residing on separate complex geometries with minimal computational overhead.

Combustion stabilization and enhancement of the flammability limits are mandatory objectives to improve nowadays combustion chambers. At this purpose, the use of an electric field in the flame region provides a solution which is, at the same time, easy to implement and effective to modify the flame structure. The present work describes an efficient flamelet progress-variable approach developed to model the fluid dynamics of flames immersed in an electric field. The main feature of this model is that it can use complex ionization mechanisms without increasing the computational cost of the simulation. The model is based on the assumption that the combustion process is not directly influenced by the electric field and has been tested using two chemi-ionization mechanisms of different complexity in order to examine its behavior with and without the presence of heavy anions in the mixture. Using a one- and two-dimensional numerical test cases, the present approach has been able to reproduce all the major aspects encountered when a flame is subject to an imposed electric field and the main effects of the different chemical mechanisms. In this paper we show and discuss the use of a versatile interaction potential approach coupled with an immersed boundary method to simulate a variety of flows involving deformable bodies. In particular, we focus on two kinds of problems, namely (i) deformation of liquid-liquid interfaces and (ii) flow in the left ventricle of the heart with either a mechanical or a natural valve. Both examples have in common the two-way interaction of the flow with a deformable interface or a membrane. The interaction potential approach (de Tullio & Pascazio, Jou. Comp. Phys., 2016; Tanaka, Wada and Nakamura, Computational Biomechanics, 2016) with minor modifications can be used to capture the deformation dynamics in both classes of problems. We show that the approach can be used to replicate the deformation dynamics of liquid-liquid interfaces through the use of ad-hoc elastic constants. The results from our simulations agree very well with previous studies on the deformation of drops in standard flow configurations such as deforming drop in a shear flow or a cross flow. We show that the same potential approach can also be used to study the flow in the left ventricle of the heart. The flow imposed into the ventricle interacts dynamically with the mitral valve (mechanical or natural) and the ventricle which are simulated using the same model. Results from these simulations are compared with ad- hoc in-house experimental measurements. Finally, a parallelisation scheme is presented, as parallelisation is unavoidable when studying large scale problems involving several thousands of simultaneously deforming bodies on hundreds of distributed memory computing processors.

Modelling the vascular transport and adhesion of man-made particles is crucial for optimizing their efficacy in the detection and treatment of diseases. Here, a Lattice Boltzmann and Immersed Boundary methods are combined together for predicting the near wall dynamics of particles with different shapes in a laminar flow. For the lattice Boltzmann modelling, a Gauss-Hermite projection is used to derive the lattice equation, wall boundary conditions are imposed through the Zou-He framework, and a moving least squares algorithm accurately reconstructs the forcing term accounting for the immersed boundary. First, the computational code is validated against two well-known test cases: the sedimentation of circular and elliptical cylinders in a quiescent fluid. A very good agreement is observed between the present results and those available in the literature. Then, the transport of circular, elliptical, rectangular, square and triangular particles is analyzed in a Couette flow, at Re=20. All particles drifted laterally across the stream lines reaching an equilibrium position, independently of the initial conditions. For this large Reynolds number, the particle shape has no significant effect on the final equilibrium position but it does affect the absolute value and periodicity of the angular velocity. Specifically, elongated particles show longer oscillation periods and, most interestingly, larger variations in angular velocity. The longest particles exhibit a zero angular velocity for almost the whole rotational period. Collectively, this data demonstrates that the proposed approach can be efficiently used for predicting complex particle dynamics in biologically relevant flows. This computational strategy could have significant impact in the field of computational nanomedicine for optimizing the specific delivery of therapeutic and imaging agents.

The simulation of turbulent combustion phenomena is still an open problem in modern fluid dynamics. Considering the economical importance of hydrocarbon combustion in energy production processes, it is evident the need of an accurate tool with a relatively low computational cost for the prediction of this kind of reacting flows. In the present work, a comparative study is carried out among large eddy simulations, performed with various grid resolutions, a Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation, and experimental data concerning the well-known Sandia D flame test case. In all the simulations, a flamelet progress variable model has been employed using various hypotheses for the joint probability density function closure. The filtered approach proved to be more accurate than the averaged one, even for the coarser grid used in this work. In fact both approaches have shown poorly accurate predictions in the first part of the combustion chamber, but only by the large eddy simulation one is capable to recover the inlet discrepancies with respect to the experimental data going along the streamwise direction.

After a brief review of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) conservative system of N nonlinearly coupled oscillators, this paper addresses two problems: first, comparing two indicators for the equipartition, showing that the results are essentially identical; second, finding a method that allows fast integration to reach the long integration times required in this area. In particular this work proposes a symplectic algorithm based on the Fast Fourier Transform.
