Many children struggle or refuse to take oral medications. The refusal of medication occurs for many reasons including learned and pre-existing anxiety, sensitivity to tastes and textures and sensory–motor/coordination difficulties (for tablet swallowing). Oral analgesics play a vital role in managing the odontogenic pain of children. This is especially true when they have limited access to appropriate dental care services, are pre-cooperative or lack the ability to be compliant for conventional dental treatment. CPD/Clinical Relevance: Practical advice around the facilitation of analgesic administration for odontogenic pain is lacking for parents of children who may not accept conventional preparations. Introduction: Minimising spread of the COVID-19 infection through reducing face-to-face consults is essential. In doing so, alternative assessment and communication methods for management of patients with oral conditions should be considered. Material and methods: Patients on the waiting list for the joint oral medicine-paediatric dental clinic between March and June 2020 were prioritised based on a criteria including relevant medical history, diagnosis and clinical need and current management − monitoring, topical therapy or systemic therapy. A telephone consult method was chosen to assess and follow up patients and a parental satisfaction questionnaire was conducted following telephone consult. Results: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) was the most common diagnosis of patients reviewed on the telephone clinic. Overall, the patient satisfaction questionnaire revealed that 100% of respondents would prefer a telephone consult during COVID-19 rather than face-to-face appointments. 74% opted for a video consult in preference to a telephone consult. Conclusion: This service evaluation has found telephone consults to be a valuable alternative to face-to-face consults in the management of patients with chronic oral mucosal diseases. Telephone consultations have high parental satisfaction and are an effective, convenient method to assess and follow up patients whilst maintaining their safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This article examines the United Kingdom Supreme Court decision in Whittington Hospital NHS Trust v XX [2020] UKSC 14. The case centred on whether damages could be awarded for the cost of a commercial surrogacy arrangement in California, following clinical negligence by the hospital that left the plaintiff unable to carry her own children. After examination of this case, the article outlines and compares the United Kingdom and Australian surrogacy laws. It then discusses how a similar case would be decided in Australia and argues that the result would be the same in some Australian States. It also discusses the concept of reproductive autonomy and the importance of this concept when considering cases involving the loss of fertility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To characterize the scientific production on educational technologies in post-mastectomy care. An integrative literature review that has as a research mode that grants the search, critical analysis and synthesis of accessible evidence about a subject to be investigated in which, the outcome is the understanding of the investigated theme. It was evidenced that the use of educational technologies in health, whether through booklets, manuals, forms and video, are ways of transmitting knowledge and information that aim to guide, interact and disseminate content that contributes to the dissemination of knowledge. Educational technologies are increasingly being used by health professionals, especially nurses, because through teaching and learning it is possible to transmit and disseminate knowledge, facilitating communication, understanding of care and self-care guidelines in order to stimulate self-management of the patient care. A study is conducted to determine the safety and efficacy of 2 screen-and-treat approaches for cervical cancer prevention. Both screen-and-test approaches are safe and result in a lower prevalence of high-grade cervical cancer precursor lesions compared with delayed evaluation at 6 and 12 months.

Abstract Background This study was designed to quantify the resources used in reestablishing contact with women who missed their scheduled cervical cancer screening visits and to assess the success of this effort in reducing loss to follow-up in a developing country setting. Methods Women were enrolled in this Cape Town, South Africa-based screening study between 2000 and 2003, and all had scheduled follow-up visits in 2003. Community health worker (CHW) time, vehicle use, maintenance, and depreciation were estimated from weekly logs and cost accounting systems. The percentage of women who attended their scheduled visit, those who attended after CHW contact(s), and those who never returned despite attempted contact(s) were determined. The number of CHW visits per woman was also estimated. Results 3,711 visits were scheduled in 2003. Of these, 2,321 (62.5%) occurred without CHW contact, 918 (24.8%) occurred after contact(s), and 472 (12.7%) did not occur despite contact(s). Loss to follow-up was reduced from 21% to 6%, 39% to 10%, and 50% to 24% for 6, 12, and 24-month visits. CHWs attempted 3,200 contacts in 530 trips. On average, 3 CHWs attempted to contact 6 participants over each 111 minute trip. The per-person cost (2003 Rand) for these activities was 12.75, 24.92, and 40.50 for 6, 12, and 24-month visits. Conclusion CHW contact with women who missed scheduled visits increased their return rate. Cost-effectiveness analyses aimed at policy decisions about cervical cancer screening in developing countries should incorporate these findings.
