6. On the reliability of the semiempirical RR Lyrae Period - Blue Amplitude - V-band Luminosity relation

Abstract

We investigate the accuracy and reliability of the semiempirical period - blue amplitude - V-band luminosity relationship for ab-type RR Lyrae stars originally obtained by Castellani & De Santis (1994) and De Santis (1996). We infer that the zero point of this relationship does depend on the metallicity, by studying a sample of both field and cluster variables. We also show that the use of this relationship can still be useful for those stellar systems showing an intrinsic metallicity spread, since in this case the metallicity effect has a negligible effect on the final distance modulus estimate. We compare the adopted semiempirical relationship with the fully empirical one recently provided by Kovacs & Walker (2001). When the zero point of the latter relation is fixed consistently with the former one, the two equations are equivalent. By appling the semiempirical period - blue amplitude - V-band luminosity relation, as well as the technique proposed by Cassisi, De Santis & Piersimoni (2001), to the globular cluster $\omega$ Cen, we show that the empirical slope of the relationship between the mass of the fundamental RR Lyrae pulsators and their metallicity, is in fair agreement with the one predicted by updated evolutionary models for Horizontal-Branch stars., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, MNRAS in press

7. RR Lyrae pulsational temperature scales: On the consistency between different empirical relations

Abstract

In this paper, by assuming as correct equilibrium temperatures of RRab Lyrae variables those defined from Carney, Storm & Jones (1992, CSJ), we show that temperatures derived from (B-V) colour (mean colour over the pulsational cycle calculated on the magnitude scale) by Bessel, Castelli & Plez 1998 (BCP) transformations, are consistent with CSJ equilibrium temperatures within a probable error of $\delta \log T_e = \pm 0.003$. As a consequence it is shown that the pulsational temperature scale, temperature-period-blue amplitude ($T_{eff}=f(P,A_B)$), provided by De Santis (1996, DS96) by (B-V) colour of about 70 stars of Lub's sample, is a suitable relation, reddening and metallicity free, to calculate equilibrium temperatures for RRab variables. This relation is independent from variable mass and luminosity within a large range of period-shift from the mean period-amplitude relation valid for the Lub's sample of variables. On the contrary, it is also shown that a temperature-amplitude-metallicity relation is strictly dependent from the period-amplitude relation of the sample used for calibrating it: we prove this means that it is dependent from both mass and luminosity variations of variables., Comment: 6 pages, 5 postscript figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

8. The distance to galactic globular clusters through RR Lyrae pulsational properties

Abstract

By adopting the same approach outlined in De Santis & Cassisi (1999), we evaluate the absolute bolometric magnitude of the Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB) at the level of the RR Lyrae variable instability strip in selected galactic globular clusters. This allows us to estimate the ZAHB absolute visual magnitude for these clusters and to investigate its dependence on the cluster metallicity. The derived $M_V(ZAHB) - [Fe/H]$ relation, corrected in order to account for the luminosity difference between the ZAHB and the mean RR Lyrae magnitude, has been compared with some of the most recent empirical determinations in this field, as the one provided by Baade-Wesselink analyses, RR Lyrae periods, Hipparcos data for field variables and Main Sequence fitting based on Hipparcos parallaxes for field subdwarfs. As a result, our relation provides a clear support to the "long" distance scale. We discuss also another method for measuring the distance to galactic globular clusters. This method is quite similar to the one adopted for estimating the absolute bolometric magnitude of the ZAHB but it relies only on the pulsational properties of the Lyrae variables in each cluster. The reliability and accuracy of this method has been tested by applying it to a sample of globulars for which, due to the morphology of their horizontal branch (HB), the use of the commonly adopted ZAHB fitting is a risky procedure., Comment: 7 pages, 2 postscript figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

9. A pulsational approach to the luminosity of Horizontal Branch stellar structures

Abstract

We discuss an alternative approach to constrain the absolute bolometric luminosity of Zero Age Horizontal Branch structures by using the observational pulsational properties of ab type RR Lyrae stars and theoretical expectations concerning both the relation connecting the pulsational properties of these variables to their evolutionary ones, as luminosity, mass and effective temperature and, also the location in the H-R diagram for the fundamental pulsators instability strip boundaries. Since the main goal of this work is to obtain an evaluation of the ZAHB bolometric luminosity as much as possible independent on stellar evolution theory, we have minimized the use of evolutionary prescriptions, being the only adopted evolutionary input the allowed mass range for fundamental pulsators. Nevertheless, the effects on our final results related to the use of these evolutionary prescriptions have been carefully checked. The reliability of the suggested method to obtain the ZAHB luminosity is shown by applying it to a selected sample of globular clusters (GCs), whose heavy elements abundance covers almost all the complete GCs metallicity range. The results obtained for the ZAHB bolometric luminosities have been compared with evolutionary prescriptions on such quite important quantity as given by recent evolutionary computations has been also performed. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of a deep learning (DL) algorithm predicting hemodynamically significant coronary artery disease (CAD) by using a rest dataset of myocardial computed tomography perfusion (CTP) as compared to invasive evaluation. Methods: One hundred and twelve consecutive symptomatic patients scheduled for clinically indicated invasive coronary angiography (ICA) underwent CCTA plus static stress CTP and ICA with invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) for stenoses ranging between 30 and 80%. Subsequently, a DL algorithm for the prediction of significant CAD by using the rest dataset (CTP-DLrest) and stress dataset (CTP-DLstress) was developed. The diagnostic accuracy for identification of significant CAD using CCTA, CCTA + CTP stress, CCTA + CTP-DLrest, and CCTA + CTP-DLstress was measured and compared. The time of analysis for CTP stress, CTP-DLrest, and CTP-DLStress was recorded. Results: Patient-specific sensitivity, specificity, NPV, PPV, accuracy, and area under the curve (AUC) of CCTA alone and CCTA + CTPStress were 100%, 33%, 100%, 54%, 63%, 67% and 86%, 89%, 89%, 86%, 88%, 87%, respectively. Patient-specific sensitivity, specificity, NPV, PPV, accuracy, and AUC of CCTA + DLrest and CCTA + DLstress were 100%, 72%, 100%, 74%, 84%, 96% and 93%, 83%, 94%, 81%, 88%, 98%, respectively. All CCTA + CTP stress, CCTA + CTP-DLRest, and CCTA + CTP-DLStress significantly improved detection of hemodynamically significant CAD compared to CCTA alone (p < 0.01). Time of CTP-DL was significantly lower as compared to human analysis (39.2 ± 3.2 vs. 379.6 ± 68.0 s, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Evaluation of myocardial ischemia using a DL approach on rest CTP datasets is feasible and accurate. This approach may be a useful gatekeeper prior to CTP stress..

Abstract

Background: Previous studies have shown that children and adolescents with COVID-19 generally have mild disease. Children and adolescents with cancer, however, can have severe disease when infected with respiratory viruses. In this study, we aimed to understand the clinical course and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents with cancer. Methods: We did a cohort study with data from 131 institutions in 45 countries. We created the Global Registry of COVID-19 in Childhood Cancer to capture de-identified data pertaining to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in children and adolescents (<19 years) with cancer or having received a haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. There were no centre-specific exclusion criteria. The registry was disseminated through professional networks through email and conferences and health-care providers were invited to submit all qualifying cases. Data for demographics, oncological diagnosis, clinical course, and cancer therapy details were collected. Primary outcomes were disease severity and modification to cancer-directed therapy. The registry remains open to data collection. Findings: Of 1520 submitted episodes, 1500 patients were included in the study between April 15, 2020, and Feb 1, 2021. 1319 patients had complete 30-day follow-up. 259 (19·9%) of 1301 patients had a severe or critical infection, and 50 (3·8%) of 1319 died with the cause attributed to COVID-19 infection. Modifications to cancer-directed therapy occurred in 609 (55·8%) of 1092 patients receiving active oncological treatment. Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with severe or critical illness, including World Bank low-income or lower-middle-income (odds ratio [OR] 5·8 [95% CI 3·8–8·8]; p<0·0001) and upper-middle-income (1·6 [1·2–2·2]; p=0·0024) country status; age 15–18 years (1·6 [1·1–2·2]; p=0·013); absolute lymphocyte count of 300 or less cells per mm3 (2·5 [1·8–3·4]; p<0·0001), absolute neutrophil count

Abstract

Background: Presenting symptoms of childhood cancers might mimic those of rheumatic diseases. However, the evidence available to guide differential diagnosis remains scarce. Preventing wrong or delayed diagnosis is therefore important to avoid incorrect administration of glucocorticoid or immunosuppressive therapy and worsening of prognosis. As such, we aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of presenting musculoskeletal manifestations in patients at cancer onset and to identify the factors that differentiate childhood malignancies with arthropathy from juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Methods: We did a multicentre, cross-sectional study at 25 paediatric haemato-oncology centres and 22 paediatric rheumatology centres in Italy. We prospectively recruited patients who were younger than 16 years that were newly diagnosed with cancer or juvenile idiopathic arthritis. We excluded patients with glucocorticoid pre-treatment (>1 mg/kg per day of oral prednisone or equivalent for ≥2 consecutive weeks). We collected data for patients with a new diagnosis of cancer or juvenile idiopathic arthritis using an electronic case report form on a web-based platform powered by the Cineca Interuniversity Consortium. The primary outcome was to describe the frequency and characteristics of musculoskeletal manifestations at cancer onset; and the secondary outcome was to identify factors that could discriminate malignancies presenting with arthropathy, with or without other musculoskeletal symptoms, from juvenile idiopathic arthritis using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Findings: Between May 1, 2015, and May 31, 2018, 1957 patients were eligible, of which 1277 (65%) had cancer and 680 (35%) had juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Abstract

(1) Background: to evaluate which factors can reduce the upgrade rate of atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) to in situ or invasive carcinoma in patients who underwent vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VABB) and subsequent surgical excision. (2) Methods: 2955 VABBs were reviewed; 141 patients with a diagnosis of ADH were selected for subsequent surgical excision. The association between patients’ characteristics and the upgrade rate to breast cancer was evaluated in both univariate and multivariate analyses. (3) Results: the upgrade rates to ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and invasive carcinoma (IC) were, respectively, 29.1% and 7.8%. The pooled upgrade rate to DCIS or IC was statistically lower at univariate analysis, considering the following parameters: complete removal of the lesion (p-value < 0.001); BIRADS ≤ 4a (p-value < 0.001); size of the lesion ≤15 mm (p-value: 0.002); age of the patients <50 years (p-value: 0.035). (4) Conclusions: the overall upgrade rate of ADH to DCIS or IC is high and, as already known, surgery should be recommended. However, ADH cases should always be discussed in multidisciplinary meetings: some parameters appear to be related to a lower upgrade rate. Patients presenting these parameters could be strictly followed up to avoid overtreatment.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate if a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system on ultrasound (US) can improve the diagnostic performance of inexperienced radiologists. Methods: We collected ultrasound images of 256 breast lesions taken between March and May 2020. We asked two experienced and two inexperienced radiologists to retrospectively review the US features of each breast lesion according to the Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) categories. A CAD examination with S-DetectTM software (Samsung Healthcare, Seoul, South Korea) was conducted retrospectively by another uninvolved radiologist blinded to the BIRADS values previously attributed to the lesions. Diagnostic performances of experienced and inexperienced radiologists and CAD were compared and the inter-observer agreement among radiologists was calculated. Results: The diagnostic performance of the experienced group in terms of sensitivity was significantly higher than CAD (p < 0.001). Conversely, the diagnostic performance of inexperienced group in terms of both sensitivity and specificity was significantly lower than CAD (p < 0.001). We obtained an excellent agreement in the evaluation of the lesions among the two expert radiologists (Kappa coefficient: 88.7%), and among the two non-expert radiologists (Kappa coefficient: 84.9%). Conclusion: The US CAD system is a useful additional tool to improve the diagnostic performance of the inexperienced radiologists, eventually reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies. Moreover, it is a valid second opinion in case of experienced radiologists.

Abstract

Many women with early breast cancer undergo mastectomy as a consequence of an unfavorable tumor/breast ratio or because they prefer this option to breast conservation. As reported, breast reconstruction offers significant psychological advantages. Several techniques are currently available for the breast oncoplastic surgeon and offer interesting results in terms of aesthetic and patient-reported outcomes, using both breast implants and autologous tissues. On the other hand, advanced methodologies and technologies, such as reverse engineering and additive manufacturing, allow the development of customized porous scaffolds with tailored architectures, biological, mechanical and mass transport properties. Accordingly, the current research dealt with challenges, design methods and principles to develop 3D additively manufactured structures in breast reconstructive surgery.
