The nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko exhibits a broad spectral reflectance feature around 3.2 $\mu$m, which is omnipresent in all spectra of the surface, and whose attribution has remained elusive since its discovery. Based on laboratory experiments, we have shown that most of this absorption feature is due to ammonium (NH4+) salts mixed with the dark surface material. The depth of the band is compatible with semi-volatile ammonium salts being a major reservoir of nitrogen in the comet, which could dominate over refractory organic matter and volatile species. These salts may thus represent the long-sought reservoir of nitrogen in comets, possibly bringing their nitrogen-to-carbon ratio in agreement with the solar value. Moreover, the reflectance spectra of several asteroids are compatible with the presence of NH4+ salts at their surfaces. The presence of such salts, and other NH4+-bearing compounds on asteroids, comets, and possibly in proto-stellar environments, suggests that NH4+ may be a tracer of the incorporation and transformation of nitrogen in ices, minerals and organics, at different phases of the formation of the Solar System.

The NASA/Dawn mission has acquired an unprecedented amount of data from the surface of the dwarf planet Ceres, providing a thorough characterization of its surface composition. The current favorite compositional model includes a mixture of ultra-carbonaceous material, phyllosilicates, carbonates, organic, Fe-oxides, and volatiles, as determined by the Dawn/VIR-IR imaging spectrometer, with the constraints on the elemental composition provided by the Dawn/GRAND instrument. The recent calibration of the VIS channel of the VIR spectrometer provided further constraints on the overall compositional model, suggesting another type of silicate not previously considered. This work reviews the VIR-VIS calibration process, and the resulting compositional model of Ceres surface considering both VIS and IR channels. Laboratory experiments are needed for a better understanding of the global (VIS-IR) shape of Ceres average surface, and in particular for the interpretation of the emergent absorption at 1{\mu}m. Current and future experiments are also discussed in this work.

From August to November 2014 the Rosetta orbiter has performed an extensive observation campaign aimed at the characterization of 67P/CG nucleus properties and to the selection of the Philae landing site. The campaign led to the production of a global map of the illuminated portion of 67P/CG nucleus. During this prelanding phase the comet's heliocentric distance decreased from 3.62 to 2.93 AU while Rosetta was orbiting around the nucleus at distances between 100 to 10 km. VIRTIS-M, the Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer - Mapping channel (Coradini et al. 2007) onboard the orbiter, has acquired 0.25-5.1 micron hyperspectral data of the entire illuminated surface, e.g. the north hemisphere and the equatorial regions, with spatial resolution between 2.5 and 25 m/pixel. I/F spectra have been corrected for thermal emission removal in the 3.5-5.1 micron range and for surface's photometric response. The resulting reflectance spectra have been used to compute several Cometary Spectral Indicators (CSI): single scattering albedo at 0.55 micron, 0.5-0.8 micron and 1.0-2.5 micron spectral slopes, 3.2 micron organic material and 2.0 micron water ice band parameters (center, depth) with the aim to map their spatial distribution on the surface and to study their temporal variability as the nucleus moved towards the Sun. Indeed, throughout the investigated period, the nucleus surface shows a significant increase of the single scattering albedo along with a decrease of the 0.5-0.8 and 1.0-2.5 micron spectral slopes, indicating a flattening of the reflectance. We attribute the origin of this effect to the partial removal of the dust layer caused by the increased contribution of water sublimation to the gaseous activity as comet crossed the frost-line., Comment: 19 Figures, 5 Tables. In this work we study the link between the evolution of the internal structure of Vesta and thermal heating due to 26Al and 60Fe and long-lived radionuclides, taking into account the chemical differentiation of the body and the affinity of 26Al with silicates. Differentiation takes place in all scenarios in which Vesta completes its accretion in less than 1.4 Ma after the injection of 26Al into the Solar Nebula. In all those scenarios where Vesta completes its formation in less than 1 Ma from the injection of 26Al, the degree of silicate melting reaches 100 vol. % throughout the whole asteroid. If Vesta completed its formation between 1 and 1.4 Ma after 26Al injection, the degree of silicate melting exceeds 50 vol. % over the whole asteroid but reaches 100 vol. % only in the hottest, outermost part of the mantle in all scenarios where the porosity is lower than 5 vol. %. If the formation of Vesta occurred later than 1.5 Ma after the injection of 26Al, the degree of silicate melting is always lower than 50 vol. % and is limited only to a small region of the asteroid. The radiation at the surface dominates the evolution of the crust which ranges in thickness from 8 to about 30 km after 5 Ma: a layer about 3-20 km thick is composed of primitive unmelted chondritic material while a layer of about 5-10 km is eucritic., Comment: 22 pages, 3 tables, 6 figures. Main Belt comets represent a recently discovered class of objects. They are quite intriguing because, while having a Tisserand invariant value higher than 3, are showing cometary activity. We study the activity of the Main Belt comets making the assumption that they are icy-bodies and that the activity has been triggered by an impact. We determine the characteristics of this activity and if the nowadays impact rate in the Main Asteroid Belt is compatible with the hypothesis of an activity triggered by a recent impact. Due to the fact that the Main Belt comets can be considered as a kind of comets, we apply a thermal evolution model developed for icy bodies in order to simulate their activity. We also apply a model to derive the impact rate, with respect to the size of the impactor, in the Main Belt. We demonstrate that a stable activity can result from a recent impact, able to expose ice-rich layers, and that the impact rate in the Main Belt is compatible with this explanation., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Planetary sciences can benefit from several different sources of information, i.e. ground-based or near Earth-based observations, space missions and laboratory experiments. The data collected from these sources, however, are spread over a number of smaller, separate communities and stored through different facilities: this makes it difficult to integrate them. The IDIS initiative, born in the context of the Europlanet project, performed a pilot study of the viability and the issues to be overcome in order to create an integrated search system for planetary data. As part of the results of such pilot study, the IDIS Small Bodies and Dust node developed a search system based on a preliminary XML data model. Here we introduce the goals of the IDIS initiative and describe the structure and the working of this search system. The source code of the search system is released under GPL license to allow people interested in participating to the IDIS initiative both as developers and as data providers to familiarise with the search environment and to allow the creation of volunteer nodes to be integrated into the existing network., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Computers and Geosciences
