We analyse the maps of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) signal of local galaxy clusters ($z<0.1$) observed by the $Planck$ satellite in order to classify their dynamical state through morphological features. To study the morphology of the cluster maps, we apply a method recently employed on mock SZ images generated from hydrodynamical simulated galaxy clusters in THE THREE HUNDRED (THE300) project. Here, we report the first application on real data. The method consists in modelling the images with a set of orthogonal functions defined on circular apertures, the Zernike polynomials. From the fit we compute a single parameter, $\mathcal{C}$, that quantifies the morphological features present in each image. The link between the morphology of 2D images and the dynamical state of the galaxy clusters is well known, even if not obvious. We use mock $Planck$-like Compton parameter maps generated for THE300 clusters to validate our morphological analysis. These clusters, in fact, are properly classified for their dynamical state with the relaxation parameter, $\chi$, by exploiting 3D information from simulations. We find a mild linear correlation of $\sim 38\%$ between $\mathcal{C}$ and $\chi$ for THE300 clusters, mainly affected by the noise present in the maps. In order to obtain a proper dynamical-state classification for the $Planck$ clusters, we exploit the conversion from the $\mathcal{C}$ parameter derived in each $Planck$ map in $\chi$. A fraction of the order of $63\%$ of relaxed clusters is estimated in the selected $Planck$ sample. Our classification is then compared with those of previous works that have attempted to evaluate, with different indicators and/or other wavelengths, the dynamical state of the same $Planck$ objects. Hydrodynamical simulations play a fundamental role in modern cosmological research, serving as a crucial bridge between theoretical predictions and observational data. However, due to their computational intensity, these simulations are currently constrained to relatively small volumes. Therefore, this study investigates the feasibility of utilising dark matter-only simulations to generate observable maps of galaxy clusters using a deep learning approach based on the U-Net architecture. We focus on reconstructing Compton-y parameter maps (SZ maps) and bolometric X-ray surface brightness maps (X-ray maps) from total mass density maps. We leverage data from \textsc{The Three Hundred} simulations, selecting galaxy clusters ranging in mass from $10^{13.5} h^{-1}M_{\odot}\leq M_{200} \leq 10^{15.5} h^{-1}M_{\odot}$. Despite the machine learning models being independent of baryonic matter assumptions, a notable limitation is their dependency on the underlying physics of hydrodynamical simulations. To evaluate the reliability of our generated observable maps, we employ various metrics and compare the observable-mass scaling relations. For clusters with masses greater than $2 \times 10^{14} h^{-1} M_{\odot}$, the predictions show excellent agreement with the ground-truth datasets, with percentage errors averaging (0.5 $\pm$ 0.1)\% for the parameters of the scaling laws., Comment: 16 pages, 13 Figures, comments are welcome. Numerous metrics exist to quantify the dynamical state of galaxy clusters, both observationally and within simulations. Many of these correlate strongly with one another, but it is not clear whether all of these measures probe the same intrinsic properties. In this work, we use two different statistical approaches -- principal component analysis (PCA) and uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) -- to investigate which dynamical properties of a cluster are in fact the best descriptors of its dynamical state. We use measurements taken directly from The Three Hundred suite of galaxy cluster simulations, as well as morphological properties calculated using mock X-ray and SZ maps of the same simulated clusters. We find that four descriptions of dynamical state naturally arise, and although correlations exist between these, a given cluster can be "dynamically relaxed" according to all, none, or some of these four descriptions. These results demonstrate that it is highly important for future observational and theoretical studies to consider in which sense clusters are dynamically relaxed. Galaxy clusters are located in the densest areas of the universe and are intricately connected to larger structures through the filamentary network of the Cosmic Web. In this scenario, matter flows from areas of lower density to higher density. As a result, the properties of galaxy clusters are deeply influenced by the filaments that are attached to them, which are quantified by a parameter known as connectivity. We explore the dependence of gas-traced filaments connected to galaxy clusters on the mass and dynamical state of the cluster. Moreover, we evaluate the effectiveness of the cosmic web extraction procedure from the gas density maps of simulated cluster regions. Using the DisPerSE cosmic web finder, we identify filamentary structures from 3D gas particle distribution in 324 simulated regions of $30 \, h^{-1}$ Mpc side from The Three Hundred hydrodynamical simulation at redshifts z=0, 1, and 2. We estimate the connectivity at various apertures for $\sim3000$ groups and clusters spanning a mass range from $10^{13} \, h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$ to $10^{15} \, h^{-1} \, M_{\odot}$. Relationships between connectivity and cluster properties like radius, mass, dynamical state and hydrostatic mass bias are explored. We show that the connectivity is strongly correlated with the mass of galaxy clusters, with more massive clusters being on average more connected. This finding aligns with previous studies in literature, both from observational and simulated data sets. Additionally, we observe a dependence of the connectivity on the aperture at which it is estimated. We find that connectivity decreases with cosmic time, while no dependencies on the dynamical state and hydrostatic mass bias of the cluster are found. Galaxy clusters are composed of dark matter, gas and stars. Their dark matter component, which amounts to around 80\% of the total mass, cannot be directly observed but traced by the distribution of diffused gas and galaxy members. In this work, we aim to infer the cluster's projected total mass distribution from mock observational data, i.e. stars, Sunyaev-Zeldovich, and X-ray, by training deep learning models. To this end, we have created a multiview images dataset from {\sc{The Three Hundred}} simulation that is optimal for training Machine Learning models. We further study deep learning architectures based on the U-Net to account for single-input and multi-input models. OLIMPO is a proposed Antarctic balloon-borne Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) imager to study gas dynamics associated with structure formation along with the properties of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) residing in the connective filaments. During a 25 day flight OLIMPO will image a total of 10 z~0.05 galaxy clusters and 8 bridges at 145, 250, 365, and 460 GHz at an angular resolution of 1.0'-3.3'. The maps will be significantly deeper than those planned from CMB-S4 and CCAT-P, and will have excellent fidelity to the large angular scales of our low-z targets, which are difficult to probe from the ground. In combination with X-ray data from eROSITA and XRISM we will transform our current static view of galaxy clusters into a full dynamic picture by measuring the internal intra-cluster medium (ICM) velocity structure with the kinematic SZE, X-ray spectroscopy, and the power spectrum of ICM fluctuations. Radio observations from ASKAP and MeerKAT will be used to better understand the connection between ICM turbulence and shocks with the relativistic plasma. Beyond the cluster boundary, we will combine thermal SZE maps from OLIMPO with X-ray imaging from eROSITA to measure the thermodynamics of the WHIM residing in filaments, providing a better understanding of its properties and its contribution to the total baryon budget., Comment: From the proceedings of the mm Universe 2023

The intra-cluster medium is prone to turbulent motion that will contribute to the non-thermal heating of the gas, complicating the use of galaxy clusters as cosmological probes. Indirect approaches can estimate the intensity and structure of turbulent motions by studying the associated fluctuations in gas density and X-ray surface brightness. In this work, we want to constrain the gas density fluctuations at work in the CHEX-MATE sample to obtain a detailed view of their properties in a large population of clusters. We use a simulation-based approach to constrain the parameters of the power spectrum of density fluctuations, assuming a Kolmogorov-like spectrum and including the sample variance, further providing an approximate likelihood for each cluster. This method requires clusters to be not too disturbed, as fluctuations can originate from dynamic processes such as merging. Accordingly, we remove the less relaxed clusters (centroid shift $w>0.02$) from our sample, resulting in a sample of 64 clusters. We define different subsets of CHEX-MATE to determine properties of density fluctuations as a function of dynamical state, mass and redshift, and investigate the correlation with the presence or not of a radio halo. We found a positive correlation between the dynamical state and density fluctuation variance, a non-trivial behaviour with mass and no specific trend with redshift or the presence/absence of a radio halo. The injection scale is mostly constrained by the core region. The slope in the inertial range is consistent with Kolmogorov theory. When interpreted as originating from turbulent motion, the density fluctuations in $R_{500}$ yield an average Mach number of $M_{3D}\simeq 0.4\pm 0.2$, an associated non-thermal pressure support of $ P_{turb}/P_{tot}\simeq (9\pm 6) \%$ or a hydrostatic mass bias $b_{turb}\simeq 0.09\pm 0.06$, in line with what is expected from the literature., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, abstract slightly abridged for Arxiv

A galaxy cluster as the most massive gravitationally-bound object in the Universe, is dominated by Dark Matter, which unfortunately can only be investigated through its interaction with the luminous baryons with some simplified assumptions that introduce an un-preferred bias. In this work, we, {\it for the first time}, propose a deep learning method based on the U-Net architecture, to directly infer the projected total mass density map from idealised observations of simulated galaxy clusters at multi-wavelengths. The model is trained with a large dataset of simulated images from clusters of {\sc The Three Hundred Project}. Although Machine Learning (ML) models do not depend on the assumptions of the dynamics of the intra-cluster medium, our whole method relies on the choice of the physics implemented in the hydrodynamic simulations, which is a limitation of the method. Through different metrics to assess the fidelity of the inferred density map, we show that the predicted total mass distribution is in very good agreement with the true simulated cluster. Therefore, it is not surprising to see the integrated halo mass is almost unbiased, around 1 per cent for the best result from multiview, and the scatter is also very small, basically within 3 per cent. This result suggests that this ML method provides an alternative and more accessible approach to reconstructing the overall matter distribution in galaxy clusters, which can complement the lensing method., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, published in MNRAS

The study of the morphology of 2D projected maps of galaxy clusters is a suitable approach to infer, from real data, the dynamical state of those systems. We recently developed a new method to recover the morphological features in galaxy cluster maps which consists of an analytical modelling through the Zernike polynomials. After the first validation of this approach on a set of high-resolution mock maps of the Compton parameter, $y$, from hydrodynamically simulated galaxy clusters in THE THREE HUNDRED project, we apply the Zernike modelling on $y$-maps of local ($z < 0.1$) galaxy clusters observed by the $Planck$ satellite. With a single parameter collecting the main information of the Zernike modelling, we classify their morphology. A set of mock $Planck$-like $y$-maps, generated from THE THREE HUNDRED clusters, is also used to validate our indicator with a proper dynamical state classification. Galaxy clusters and their filamentary outskirts reveal useful laboratories to test cosmological models and investigate Universe composition and evolution. Their environment, in particular the filaments of the Cosmic Web to which they are connected, plays an important role in shaping the properties of galaxy clusters. In this project, we analyse the gas filamentary structures present in 324 regions of The Three Hundred hydrodynamical simulation extracted with the DisPerSE filament finder. We estimate the number of gas filaments globally connected to several galaxy clusters, i.e. the connectivity k, with a mass range of $10^{13} \leq M_{200} \, h^{-1} \, M_{\odot} \leq 10^{15} $ at redshift $z=0$. We study the positive correlation between the connectivity and mass of galaxy clusters. Galaxy clusters are the products of structure formation through myriad physical processes that affect their growth and evolution throughout cosmic history. As a result, the matter distribution within galaxy clusters, or their shape, is influenced by cosmology and astrophysical processes, in particular the accretion of new material due to gravity. We introduce an analysis method to investigate the 3D triaxial shapes of galaxy clusters from the Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton -- Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation (CHEX-MATE). In this work, the first paper of a CHEX-MATE triaxial analysis series, we focus on utilizing X-ray data from XMM and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect maps from Planck and ACT to obtain a three dimensional triaxial description of the intracluster medium (ICM) gas. We present the forward modeling formalism of our technique, which projects a triaxial ellipsoidal model for the gas density and pressure to compare directly with the observed two dimensional distributions in X-rays and the SZ effect. A Markov chain Monte Carlo is used to estimate the posterior distributions of the model parameters. Using mock X-ray and SZ observations of a smooth model, we demonstrate that the method can reliably recover the true parameter values. In addition, we apply the analysis to reconstruct the gas shape from the observed data of one CHEX-MATE galaxy cluster, Abell 1689, to illustrate the technique. The inferred parameters are in agreement with previous analyses for that cluster, and our results indicate that the geometrical properties, including the axial ratios of the ICM distribution, are constrained to within a few percent. With much better precision than previous studies, we thus further establish that Abell 1689 is significantly elongated along the line of sight, resulting in its exceptional gravitational lensing properties., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes and the regions of radius 15 $h^{-1}$Mpc around them, we study galaxy pairs in high-density environments. By projecting the galaxies' 3D coordinates onto a 2D plane, we apply observational techniques to find galaxy pairs. Based on a previous theoretical study on galaxy groups in the same simulations, we are able to classify the observed pairs into "true" or "false", depending on whether they are gravitationally bound or not. We find that the fraction of true pairs (purity) crucially depends on the specific thresholds used to find the pairs, ranging from around 30 to more than 80 per cent in the most restrictive case. Nevertheless, in these very restrictive cases, we see that the completeness of the sample is low, failing to find a significant number of true pairs. Therefore, we train a machine learning algorithm to help us to identify these true pairs based on the properties of the galaxies that constitute them. With the aid of the machine learning model trained with a set of properties of all the objects, we show that purity and completeness can be boosted significantly using the default observational thresholds. Furthermore, this machine learning model also reveals the properties that are most important when distinguishing true pairs, mainly the size and mass of the galaxies, their spin parameter, gas content and shape of their stellar components., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures. We use a set of about 300 simulated clusters from The Three Hundred Project to calculate their hydrostatic masses and evaluate the associated bias by comparing them with the true cluster mass. Over a redshift range from 0.07 to 1.3, we study the dependence of the hydrostatic bias on redshift, concentration, mass growth, dynamical state, mass, and halo shapes. We find almost no correlation between the bias and any of these parameters. However, there is a clear evidence that the scatter of the mass-bias distribution is larger for low-concentrated objects, high mass growth, and more generically for disturbed systems. Moreover, we carefully study the evolution of the bias of twelve clusters throughout a major-merger event. We find that the hydrostatic-mass bias follows a particular evolution track along the merger process: to an initial significant increase of the bias recorded at the begin of merger, a constant plateaus follows until the end of merge, when there is a dramatic decrease in the bias before the cluster finally become relaxed again. This large variation of the bias is in agreement with the large scatter of the hydrostatic bias for dynamical disturbed clusters. These objects should be avoided in cosmological studies because their exact relaxation phase is difficult to predict, hence their mass bias cannot be trivially accounted for., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures. Galaxy clusters are useful laboratories to investigate the evolution of the Universe, and accurately measuring their total masses allows us to constrain important cosmological parameters. However, estimating mass from observations that use different methods and spectral bands introduces various systematic errors. This paper evaluates the use of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to reliably and accurately infer the masses of galaxy clusters from the Compton-y parameter maps provided by the Planck satellite. The CNN is trained with mock images generated from hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy clusters, with Planck's observational limitations taken into account. We observe that the CNN approach is not subject to the usual observational assumptions, and so is not affected by the same biases. By applying the trained CNNs to the real Planck maps, we find cluster masses compatible with Planck measurements within a 15% bias. Finally, we show that this mass bias can be explained by the well known hydrostatic equilibrium assumption in Planck masses, and the different parameters in the Y500-M500 scaling laws. This work highlights that CNNs, supported by hydrodynamic simulations, are a promising and independent tool for estimating cluster masses with high accuracy, which can be extended to other surveys as well as to observations in other bands., Comment: 17 pages, 3 Figures and Supplementary material (+11 figures). Close pairs of galaxies have been broadly studied in the literature as a way to understand galaxy interactions and mergers. In observations they are usually defined by setting a maximum separation in the sky and in velocity along the line of sight, and finding galaxies within these ranges. However, when observing the sky, projection effects can affect the results, by creating spurious pairs that are not close in physical distance. In this work we mimic these observational techniques to find pairs in The Three Hundred simulations of clusters of galaxies. The galaxies' 3D coordinates are projected into 2D, with Hubble flow included for their line-of-sight velocities. The pairs found are classified into "good" or "bad" depending on whether their 3D separations are within the 2D spatial limit or not. We find that the fraction of good pairs can be between 30 and 60 per cent depending on the thresholds used in observations. Studying the ratios of observable properties between the pair member galaxies, we find that the likelihood of a pair being "good" can be increased by around 40, 20 and 30 per cent if the given pair has, respectively, a mass ratio below 0.2, metallicity ratio above 0.8, or colour ratio below 0.8. Moreover, shape and stellar-to-halo mass ratios respectively below 0.4 and 0.2 can increase the likelihood by 50 to 100 per cent. In this work, we performed an analysis of the X-ray morphology of the 118 CHEX-MATE (Cluster HEritage project with XMM-Newton - Mass Assembly and Thermodynamics at the Endpoint of structure formation) galaxy clusters, with the aim to provide a classification of their dynamical state. To investigate the link between the X-ray appearance and the dynamical state, we considered four morphological parameters: the surface brightness concentration, the centroid shift, and the second- and third-order power ratios. These indicators result to be: strongly correlated with each other, powerful in identifying the disturbed and relaxed population, characterised by a unimodal distribution and not strongly influenced by systematic uncertainties. In order to obtain a continuous classification of the CHEX-MATE objects, we combined these four parameters in a single quantity, M, which represents the grade of relaxation of a system. On the basis of the M value, we identified the most extreme systems of the sample, finding 15 very relaxed and 27 very disturbed galaxy clusters. From a comparison with previous analysis on X-ray selected samples, we confirmed that the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) clusters tend to be more disturbed. Finally, by applying our analysis on a simulated sample, we found a general agreement between the observed and simulated results, with the only exception of the concentration. This latter behaviour, is partially related to the presence of particles with high smoothed-particle hydrodynamics density in the central regions of the simulated clusters due to the action of the idealised isotropic thermal Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) feedback., Comment: 24 pages, 16 figures, 10 tables. We introduce \textsc{Gizmo-Simba}, a new suite of galaxy cluster simulations within \textsc{The Three Hundred} project. \textsc{The Three Hundred} consists of zoom re-simulations of 324 clusters with $M_{200}\gtrsim 10^{14.8}M_\odot$ drawn from the MultiDark-Planck $N$-body simulation, run using several hydrodynamic and semi-analytic codes. The \textsc{Gizmo-Simba} suite adds a state-of-the-art galaxy formation model based on the highly successful {\sc Simba} simulation, mildly re-calibrated to match $z=0$ cluster stellar properties. Comparing to \textsc{The Three Hundred} zooms run with \textsc{Gadget-X}, we find intrinsic differences in the evolution of the stellar and gas mass fractions, BCG ages, and galaxy colour-magnitude diagrams, with \textsc{Gizmo-Simba} generally providing a good match to available data at $z \approx 0$. \textsc{Gizmo-Simba}'s unique black hole growth and feedback model yields agreement with the observed BH scaling relations at the intermediate-mass range and predicts a slightly different slope at high masses where few observations currently lie. \textsc{Gizmo-Simba} provides a new and novel platform to elucidate the co-evolution of galaxies, gas, and black holes within the densest cosmic environments., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, matched to published version in MNRAS

Using the data set of The Three Hundred project, i.e. a suite of 324 hydrodynamical resimulations of cluster-sized haloes, we study galaxy cluster mergers and their effect on colour and luminosity changes of their brightest cluster galaxies (BCG). We track the main progenitor of each halo at z=0 and search for merger situations based on its mass accretion history, defining mergers as very rapid increases in the halo mass. Based upon the evolution of the dynamical state of the cluster we define a pre- and post-merger phase. We create a list of all these events and statistically study their mass ratio and timescales, with the former verifying that all instances are in fact major mergers. By comparing to a control sample of clusters without mergers, we study the effect mergers have on the stellar component of the BCG. Analysing the mass, age and metallicity of the BCG stellar particles, we find that the stellar content of BCGs grows significantly during mergers and, even though the main growth mechanism is the accretion of older stars, there is even a burst in star formation induced by the merger. In our simulations, BCGs in mergers form in median around 70 per cent more stars than those normally growing, although this depends on the radius considered for defining the BCG. Regarding observable properties, we see an increase in SDSS-u luminosity of 20 per cent during mergers, accompanied by a slightly slower increase of the galaxy g-r colour as compared to the control sample., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Using the galaxy clusters from The Three Hundred Project, we define a new parameter: $\lambda_{DS}$ to describe the dynamical state of clusters, which assumes a double-Gaussian distribution in logarithm scale for our mass-complete cluster sample at $z=0$ from the dark-matter-only (DMO) run. Therefore, the threshold for distinguishing relaxed and unrelaxed clusters is naturally determined by the crossing point of the double-Gaussian fitting which has a value of $\lambda_{DS} = 3.424$. By applying $\lambda_{DS}$ with the same parameters from the DMO run to the hydro-dynamically simulated clusters (Gadget-X run and GIZMO-SIMBA run), we investigate the effect of baryons on the cluster dynamical state. We find a weak baryon-model dependence for the $\lambda_{DS}$ parameter. Finally, we study the evolution of $\lambda_{DS}$ along with clusters mass accretion history. We notice an upper limit of halo mass change $\frac{\Delta M_{200}}{M_{200}} \sim 0.12$ that don't alter the cluster dynamical state, i.e. from relaxed to unrelaxed. We define relaxation period (from the most relaxed state to disturb and relaxed again) which reflects how long the dynamical state of a cluster restores its relaxation state, and propose a correlation between this relaxation period and the strength of halo mass change $\frac{\Delta M_{200}}{M_{200}}$. With the proposed fitting to such correlation, we verify the relaxation period can be estimated from $\frac{\Delta M_{200}}{M_{200}}$ (including multi mass change peaks) with considerably small error., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, comments are welcome

Several methods are used to evaluate, from observational data, the dynamical state of galaxy clusters. Among them, the morphological analysis of cluster images is well suited for this purpose. We report a new approach to the morphology, which consists in analytically modelling the images with a set of orthogonal functions, the Zernike polynomials (ZPs). We validated the method on mock high-resolution Compton parameter maps of synthetic galaxy clusters from THE THREE HUNDRED project. To classify the maps for their morphology we defined a single parameter, $\mathcal{C}$, by combining the contribution of some ZPs in the modelling. We verify that $\mathcal{C}$ is linearly correlated with a combination of common morphological parameters and also with a proper 3D dynamical-state indicator available for the synthetic clusters we used. We also show the early results of the Zernike modelling applied on Compton parameter maps of local clusters ($z < 0.1$) observed by the $\textit{Planck}$ satellite. Clusters of galaxies mass can be inferred by indirect observations, see X-ray band, Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect signal or optical. Unfortunately, all of them are affected by some bias. Alternatively, we provide an independent estimation of the cluster masses from the Planck PLSZ2 catalog of galaxy clusters using a machine-learning method. We train a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model with the mock SZ observations from The Three Hundred(the300) hydrodynamic simulations to infer the cluster masses from the real maps of the Planck clusters. The advantage of the CNN is that no assumption on a priory symmetry in the cluster's gas distribution or no additional hypothesis about the cluster physical state are made. Hydrostatic equilibrium (HE) is often used in observations to estimate galaxy clusters masses. We use a set of almost 300 simulated clusters from The Three Hundred Project, to estimate the cluster HE mass and the bias deriving from it. We study the dependence of the bias on several dynamical state indicators across a redshift range from 0.07 to 1.3, finding no dependence between them. The Planck Collaboration has shown that the number of clusters as a function of their mass and redshift is an extremely powerful tool for cosmological analyses. However, the true cluster mass is not directly measurable. Among the possible approaches, clusters mass could be related to different observables via self similar scaling law. These observables are related to the baryonic components of which a cluster is composed. However, the theoretical relations that allow the use of these proxies often are affected by observational and physical biases, which impacts on the determination of the cluster mass. Fortunately, cosmological simulations are an extremely powerful tool to assess these problems. We present our calibration of the scaling relation between mass and velocity dispersion of galaxy members from the study of the simulated clusters of \THP{} project with mass above $10^{13} M_\odot$. In order to investigate the presence of a redshift dependence, we analyzed 16 different redshifts between $z = 0$ and $z = 2$. In the current proceedings, we summarise the results presented during the mm Universe@NIKA2 conference, taken from our main results in \cite{Haridasu:2021hzq}. We test the Degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor(DHOST) theory as a generalised platform for scalar-tensor theory at galaxy cluster scales to predict in such static systems small scale modification to the gravitational potential. {DHOST theory is not only a good alternative to $\Lambda$CDM for the background evolution but also predicts small-scale modification to the gravitational potential in static systems such as galaxy clusters.} With a sample of 12 clusters with accurate X-ray Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) data (X-COP project) and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) ICM pressure (Planck satellite), we place preliminary constraints on the DHOST parameters defining the deviation from GR. Moreover, we also collect a few supplementary analyses we have performed during the course: i) Gaussian process reconstruction without parametric assumptions, ii) $\Psz$-only data analysis not aided by the X-ray data. We test the generalized scalar-tensor theory in static systems, namely galaxy clusters. The Degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theory modifies the Newtonian potential through effective Newtonian constant and $\Xi_1$ parameter in the small scale, which modifies the hydrostatic equilibrium. We utilize the well-compiled X-COP catalog consisting of 12 clusters with Intra Cluster Medium (ICM) pressure profile by Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect data and temperature profile by X-ray data for each cluster. We perform a fully Bayesian analysis modeling Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) for the mass profile, and the simplified Vikhlinin model for the electron density. Carefully selecting suitable clusters to present our results, we find a mild to moderate, i.e, $\sim 2\sigma$ significance for a deviation from the standard scenario in 4 of the clusters. However, in terms of Bayesian evidence, we find either equivalent or mild preference for GR. We estimate a joint constraint of $\Xi_1 = -0.030 \pm 0.043$ using 8 clusters, for a modification from a $\Lambda$CDM scenario. This limit is in very good agreement with theoretical ones and an order of magnitude more stringent than the previous constraint obtained using clusters. We also quote a more conservative limit of $\Xi_1 = -0.061 \pm 0.074$. Finally, we comment on the tentative redshift dependence ($\Xi_1(z)$), finding a mild preference ($ \lesssim 2\sigma$) for the same., Comment: Comments are Welcome

We study the connection between morphology and dynamical state of the simulated galaxy clusters in $z\in[0,1.031]$ from THE THREE HUNDRED Project. We quantify cluster dynamical state using a combination of dynamical indicators from theoretical measures and compare this combined parameter, $\chi$, with the results from morphological classifications. The dynamical state of the cluster sample shows a continuous distribution from dynamically relaxed, more abundant at lower redshift, to hybrid and disturbed. The dynamical state presents a clear dependence on the radius, with internal regions more relaxed than outskirts. The morphology from multi-wavelength mock observation of clusters in X-ray, optical, and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect images, is quantified by $M$ -- a combination of six parameters for X-ray and SZ maps and the offsets between the optical position of the Brightest Central Galaxy (BCG) and the X-ray/SZ centroids. All the morphological parameters are highly correlated with each other, while they show a moderately strong correlation with the dynamical $\chi$ parameter. The X-ray or SZ peaks are less affected by the dynamical state than centroids, which results in reliable tracers of the cluster density peak. The principal source of contamination in the relaxed cluster fraction, inferred from morphological parameters, is due to dynamically hybrid clusters. Compared to individual parameters, which consider only one aspect of cluster property (e.g. only clumping or asymmetry), the combined morphological and dynamical parameters ($M$ and $\chi$) collect more information and provide a single and more accurate estimation of the cluster dynamical state., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. Clusters of galaxies are useful tools to constrain cosmological parameters, only if their masses can be correctly inferred from observations. In particular, X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect observations can be used to derive masses within the framework of the hydrostatic equilibrium. Therefore, it is crucial to have a good control of the possible mass biases that can be introduced when this hypothesis is not valid. In this work, we analyzed a set of 260 synthetic clusters from the MUSIC simulation project, at redshifts $0 \leq z \leq 0.82$. We estimate the hydrostatic mass of the MUSIC clusters from X-ray only (temperature and density) and from X-ray and SZ (density and pressure). Then, we compare them with the true 3D dynamical mass. The biases are of the order of 20%. We find that using the temperature instead of the pressure leads to a smaller bias, although the two values are compatible within 1$\sigma$. Non-thermal contributions to the total pressure support, arising from bulk motion and turbulence of the gas, are also computed and show that they are sufficient to account for this bias. We also present a study of the correlation between the mass bias and the dynamical state of the clusters. A clear correlation is shown between the relaxation state of the clusters and the bias factor. We applied the same analysis on a subsample of 32 objects, already selected for supporting the NIKA2 SZ Large Program., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The knowledge of the dynamical state of galaxy clusters allows to alleviate systematics when observational data from these objects are applied in cosmological studies. Evidence of correlation between the state and the morphology of the clusters is well studied. The morphology can be inferred by images of the surface brightness in the X-ray band and of the thermal component of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect in the millimetre range. For this purpose, we apply, for the first time, the Zernike polynomial decomposition, a common analytic approach mostly used in adaptive optics to recover aberrated radiation wavefronts at the telescopes pupil plane. With this novel way we expect to correctly infer the morphology of clusters and so possibly, their dynamical state. To verify the reliability of this new approach we use more than 300 synthetic clusters selected in THE THREE HUNDRED project at different redshifts ranging from 0 up to 1.03. Mock maps of the tSZ, quantified with the Compton parameter, $y$-maps, are modelled with Zernike polynomials inside $R_{500}$, the cluster reference radius. We verify that it is possible to discriminate the morphology of each cluster by estimating the contribution of the different polynomials to the fit of the map. The results of this new method are correlated with those of a previous analysis made on the same catalogue, using two parameters that combine either morphological or dynamical-state probes. Degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories are considered the most general class of scalar-tensor theories so that any constraints on them apply to the full set of scalar-tensor models. DHOST theories modify the laws of gravity even at galaxy clusters scale hence affecting the weak lensing (WL), X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observables. We derive the theoretical expression for the lensing convergence $\kappa$, and the pressure profile $P$, of clusters in the framework of DHOST theories, and quantify how much they deviate from their General Relativity (GR) counterparts. We argue that combined measurements of $\kappa$, $P$, and of the electron number density, $n_e$, can constrain both the cluster and DHOST theory parameters. We carry on a Fisher matrix forecasts analysis to investigate whether this is indeed the case considering different scenarios for the spatial resolution and errors on the measured quantities., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Using 324 numerically modelled galaxy clusters we investigate the radial and galaxy-halo alignment of dark matter subhaloes and satellite galaxies orbiting within and around them. We find that radial alignment depends on distance to the centre of the galaxy cluster but appears independent of the dynamical state of the central host cluster. Furthermore, we cannot find a relation between radial alignment of the halo or galaxy shape with its own mass. We report that backsplash galaxies, i.e. objects that have already passed through the cluster radius but are now located in the outskirts, show a stronger radial alignment than infalling objects. We further find that there exists a population of well radially aligned objects passing very close to the central cluster's centre which were found to be on highly radial orbit., Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using the catalogues of galaxy clusters from The Three Hundred project, modelled with both hydrodynamic simulations, (Gadget-X and Gadget-MUSIC), and semi-analytic models (SAMs), we study the scatter and self-similarity of the profiles and distributions of the baryonic components of the clusters: the stellar and gas mass, metallicity, the stellar age, gas temperature, and the (specific) star formation rate. Through comparisons with observational results, we find that the shape and the scatter of the gas density profiles matches well the observed trends including the reduced scatter at large radii which is a signature of self-similarity suggested in previous studies. One of our simulated sets, Gadget-X, reproduces well the shape of the observed temperature profile, while Gadget-MUSIC has a higher and flatter profile in the cluster centre and a lower and steeper profile at large radii. The gas metallicity profiles from both simulation sets, despite following the observed trend, have a relatively lower normalisation. The cumulative stellar density profiles from SAMs are in better agreement with the observed result than both hydrodynamic simulations which show relatively higher profiles. The scatter in these physical profiles, especially in the cluster centre region, shows a dependence on the cluster dynamical state and on the cool-core/non-cool-core dichotomy. The stellar age, metallicity and (s)SFR show very large scatter, which are then presented in 2D maps. We also do not find any clear radial dependence of these properties. However, the brightest central galaxies have distinguishable features compared to the properties of the satellite galaxies., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures

We use TheThreeHundred project, a suite of 324 resimulated massive galaxy clusters embedded in a broad range of environments, to investigate (i) how the gas content of surrounding haloes correlates with phase-space position at $z=0$, and (ii) to investigate the role that ram pressure plays in this correlation. By stacking all 324 normalised phase-space planes containing 169287 haloes and subhaloes, we show that the halo gas content is tightly correlated with phase-space position. At $\sim\,1.5-2\,\text{R}_{\text{200}}$ of the cluster dark matter halo, we find an extremely steep decline in the halo gas content of infalling haloes and subhaloes irrespective of cluster mass, possibly indicating the presence of an accretion shock. We also find that subhaloes are particularly gas-poor, even in the cluster outskirts, which could indicate active regions of ongoing pre-processing. By modelling the instantaneous ram pressure experienced by each halo and subhalo at $z=0$, we show that the ram pressure intensity is also well correlated with phase-space position, which is again irrespective of cluster mass. In fact, we show that regions in the phase-space plane with high differential velocity between a halo or subhalo and its local gas environment, are almost mutually exclusive with high halo gas content regions. This suggests a causal link between the gas content of objects and the instantaneous ram pressure they experience, where the dominant factor is the differential velocity., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted to MNRAS

In this paper we describe QUBIC, an experiment that will observe the polarized microwave sky with a novel approach, which combines the sensitivity of state-of-the art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. QUBIC unique features are the so-called "self-calibration", a technique that allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects, and its spectral imaging power, i.e. the ability to separate the signal in various sub-bands within each frequency band. QUBIC will observe the sky in two main frequency bands: 150 GHz and 220 GHz. The relationship between galaxy properties and environment is a widely discussed topic within astrophysics. Here we use galaxy samples from hydrodynamical re-simulations to examine this relationship. We use the over-density ($\delta_1$) within a $1 h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ sphere around a galaxy to evaluate its environment. Then the relations between galaxy properties, such as specific star formation rate(sSFR), fraction of star forming galaxies, $g-r$ colour and $\delta_1$ are examined within three galactic samples formed from galaxies within large clusters, those in the vicinity of large clusters and those in the field. We find tight environmental correlations for these galaxy properties. In brief, galaxies in denser environments tend to be redder and are more likely to be quenched. This is consistent with observations. We find that although the sSFR decreases with $\delta_1$, this is mainly because that galaxies with higher stellar mass reside in environment with higher overdensity. At fixed over-density a galaxy's color is also independent of whether it lives within a cluster or within the field, but the relative fractions of the two samples varies dramatically with over-density and this drives an apparent evolution., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

We introduce the THE THREE HUNDRED project, an endeavour to model 324 large galaxy clusters with full-physics hydrodynamical re-simulations. Here we present the data set and study the differences to observations for fundamental galaxy cluster properties and scaling relations. We find that the modelled galaxy clusters are generally in reasonable agreement with observations with respect to baryonic fractions and gas scaling relations at redshift z = 0. However, there are still some (model-dependent) differences, such as central galaxies being too massive, and galaxy colours (g - r) being bluer (about 0.2 dex lower at the peak position) than in observations. The agreement in gas scaling relations down to 10^{13} h^{-1} M_{\odot} between the simulations indicates that particulars of the sub-grid modelling of the baryonic physics only has a weak influence on these relations. We also include - where appropriate - a comparison to three semi-analytical galaxy formation models as applied to the same underlying dark-matter-only simulation. The masses of galaxy clusters are a key tool to constrain cosmology through the physics of large-scale structure formation and accretion. Mass estimates based on X-ray and Sunyaev--Zel'dovich measurements have been found to be affected by the contribution of non-thermal pressure components, due e.g. to kinetic gas energy. The characterization of possible ordered motions (e.g. rotation) of the intra-cluster medium could be important to recover cluster masses accurately. We update the study of gas rotation in clusters through the maps of the kinetic Sunyaev--Zel'dovich effect, using a large sample of massive synthetic galaxy clusters ($ M_{vir} > 5\times 10^{14} h^{-1}$M$_\odot$ at $z~=~0 $) from MUSIC high-resolution simulations. We select few relaxed objects showing peculiar rotational features, as outlined in a companion work. To verify whether it is possible to reconstruct the expected radial profile of the rotational velocity, we fit the maps to a theoretical model accounting for a specific rotational law, referred as the vp2b model. We find that our procedure allows to recover the parameters describing the gas rotational velocity profile within two standard deviations, both with and without accounting for the bulk velocity of the cluster. The amplitude of the temperature distortion produced by the rotation is consistent with theoretical estimates found in the literature, and it is of the order of 23 per cent of the maximum signal produced by the cluster bulk motion. The determination of the morphology of galaxy clusters has important repercussion on their cosmological and astrophysical studies. In this paper we address the morphological characterisation of synthetic maps of the Sunyaev--Zel'dovich (SZ) effect produced for a sample of 258 massive clusters ($M_{vir}>5\times10^{14}h^{-1}$M$_\odot$ at $z=0$), extracted from the MUSIC hydrodynamical simulations. Specifically, we apply five known morphological parameters, already used in X-ray, two newly introduced ones, and we combine them together in a single parameter. We analyse two sets of simulations obtained with different prescriptions of the gas physics (non radiative and with cooling, star formation and stellar feedback) at four redshifts between 0.43 and 0.82. For each parameter we test its stability and efficiency to discriminate the true cluster dynamical state, measured by theoretical indicators. The combined parameter discriminates more efficiently relaxed and disturbed clusters. This parameter had a mild correlation with the hydrostatic mass ($\sim 0.3$) and a strong correlation ($\sim 0.8$) with the offset between the SZ centroid and the cluster centre of mass. Millimeter-wave continuum astronomy is today an indispensable tool for both general Astrophysics studies and Cosmology. General purpose, large field-of-view instruments are needed to map the sky at intermediate angular scales not accessible by the high-resolution interferometers and by the coarse angular resolution space-borne or ground-based surveys. These instruments have to be installed at the focal plane of the largest single-dish telescopes. In this context, we have constructed and deployed a multi-thousands pixels dual-band (150 and 260 GHz, respectively 2mm and 1.15mm wavelengths) camera to image an instantaneous field-of-view of 6.5arc-min and configurable to map the linear polarization at 260GHz. We are providing a detailed description of this instrument, named NIKA2 (New IRAM KID Arrays 2), in particular focusing on the cryogenics, the optics, the focal plane arrays based on Kinetic Inductance Detectors (KID) and the readout electronics. We are presenting the performance measured on the sky during the commissioning runs that took place between October 2015 and April 2017 at the 30-meter IRAM (Institut of Millimetric Radio Astronomy) telescope at Pico Veleta. NIKA2 has been successfully deployed and commissioned, performing in-line with the ambitious expectations. In particular, NIKA2 exhibits FWHM angular resolutions of around 11 and 17.5 arc-seconds at respectively 260 and 150GHz. The NEFD (Noise Equivalent Flux Densities) demonstrated on the maps are, at these two respective frequencies, 33 and 8 mJy*sqrt(s). A first successful science verification run has been achieved in April 2017. We forecast the main cosmological parameter constraints achievable with the CORE space mission which is dedicated to mapping the polarisation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). CORE was recently submitted in response to ESA's fifth call for medium-sized mission proposals (M5). Here we report the results from our pre-submission study of the impact of various instrumental options, in particular the telescope size and sensitivity level, and review the great, transformative potential of the mission as proposed. Specifically, we assess the impact on a broad range of fundamental parameters of our Universe as a function of the expected CMB characteristics, with other papers in the series focusing on controlling astrophysical and instrumental residual systematics. In this paper, we assume that only a few central CORE frequency channels are usable for our purpose, all others being devoted to the cleaning of astrophysical contaminants. On the theoretical side, we assume LCDM as our general framework and quantify the improvement provided by CORE over the current constraints from the Planck 2015 release. We also study the joint sensitivity of CORE and of future Baryon Acoustic Oscillation and Large Scale Structure experiments like DESI and Euclid. Specific constraints on the physics of inflation are presented in another paper of the series. In addition to the six parameters of the base LCDM, which describe the matter content of a spatially flat universe with adiabatic and scalar primordial fluctuations from inflation, we derive the precision achievable on parameters like those describing curvature, neutrino physics, extra light relics, primordial helium abundance, dark matter annihilation, recombination physics, variation of fundamental constants, dark energy, modified gravity, reionization and cosmic birefringence. We present a study on the coherent rotation of the intracluster medium and dark matter components of simulated galaxy clusters extracted from a volume-limited sample of the MUSIC project. The set is re-simulated with three different recipes for the gas physics: $(i)$ non-radiative, $(ii)$ radiative without AGN feedback, and $(iii)$ radiative with AGN feedback. Our analysis is based on the 146 most massive clusters identified as relaxed, 57 per cent of the total sample. We classify these objects as rotating and non-rotating according to the gas spin parameter, a quantity that can be related to cluster observations. We find that 4 per cent of the relaxed sample is rotating according to our criterion. By looking at the radial profiles of their specific angular momentum vector, we find that the solid body model is not a suitable description of rotational motions. The radial profiles of the velocity of the dark matter show a prevalence of the random velocity dispersion. Instead, the intracluster medium profiles are characterized by a comparable contribution from the tangential velocity and the dispersion. In general, the dark matter component dominates the dynamics of the clusters, as suggested by the correlation between its angular momentum and the gas one, and by the lack of relevant differences among the three sets of simulations., Comment: 12 pages, updated to match the MNRAS version

We present the X-ray properties and scaling relations of a large sample of clusters extracted from the Marenostrum MUltidark SImulations of galaxy Clusters (MUSIC) dataset. We focus on a sub-sample of 179 clusters at redshift z~0.11, with 3.2e14M_sun/h

PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in May 2013 as a large-class mission for investigating within the framework of the ESA Cosmic Vision program a set of important scientific questions that require high resolution, high sensitivity, full-sky observations of the sky emission at wavelengths ranging from millimeter-wave to the far-infrared. PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. In this work we study the properties of protoclusters of galaxies by employing the MUSIC set of hydrodynamical simulations, featuring a mass-limited sample of 282 resimulated clusters with available merger trees up to high redshift, and we trace the cluster formation back to $z$ = 1.5, 2.3 and 4. We study the features and redshift evolution of the mass and the spatial distribution for all the cluster progenitors and for the protoclusters, which we define as the most massive progenitors of the clusters identified at $z$ = 0. A natural extension to redshifts larger than 1 is applied to the estimate of the baryon content also in terms of gas and stars budgets: no remarkable variations with redshift are discovered. Furthermore, motivated by the proven potential of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich surveys to blindly search for faint distant objects, we focus on the scaling relation between total object mass and integrated Compton $y$-parameter, and we check for the possibility to extend the mass-observable paradigm to the protocluster regime, far beyond the redshift of 1, to account for the properties of the simulated objects. We find that the slope of this scaling law is steeper than what expected for a self-similarity assumption among these objects, and it increases with redshift mainly for the synthetic clusters where radiative processes, such as radiative cooling, heating processes of the gas due to UV background, star formation and supernovae feedback, are included. We use three different criteria to account for the dynamical state of the protoclusters, and find no significant dependence of the scaling parameters from the level of relaxation. PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1) an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and (2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of power from larger length scales). Cosmological observations from ground at millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths are affected by atmospheric absorption and consequent emission. The low and high frequency (sky noise) fluctuations of atmospheric performance imply careful observational strategies and/or instrument technical solutions. Measurements of atmospheric emission spectra are necessary for accurate calibration procedures as well as for site testing statistics. CASPER2, an instrument to explore the 90-450 GHz (3-15 1/cm) spectral region, was developed and verified its operation in the Alps. A Martin-Puplett Interferometer (MPI) operates comparing sky radiation, coming from a field of view (fov) of 28 arcminutes (FWHM) collected by a 62-cm in diameter Pressman-Camichel telescope, with a reference source. The two output ports of the interferometer are detected by two bolometers cooled down to 300 mK inside a wet cryostat. Three different and complementary interferometric techniques can be performed with CASPER2: Amplitude Modulation (AM), Fast-Scan (FS) and Phase Modulation (PM). An altazimuthal mount allows the sky pointing, possibly co-alligned to the optical axis of the 2.6-m in diameter telescope of MITO (Millimetre and Infrared Testagrigia Observatory, Italy). Optimal timescale to average acquired spectra is inferred by Allan variance analysis at 5 fiducial frequencies. We present the motivation for and design of the atmospheric spectrometer CASPER2. The adopted procedure to calibrate the instrument and preliminary performance of the instrument are described. We introduce the Marenostrum-MultiDark SImulations of galaxy Clusters (MUSIC) Dataset, one of the largest sample of hydrodynamically simulated galaxy clusters with more than 500 clusters and 2000 groups. The objects have been selected from two large N-body simulations and have been resimulated at high resolution using SPH together with relevant physical processes (cooling, UV photoionization, star formation and different feedback processes). We focus on the analysis of the baryon content (gas and star) of clusters in the MUSIC dataset both as a function of aperture radius and redshift. The results from our simulations are compared with the most recent observational estimates of the gas fraction in galaxy clusters at different overdensity radii. When the effects of cooling and stellar feedbacks are included, the MUSIC clusters show a good agreement with the most recent observed gas fractions quoted in the literature. A clear dependence of the gas fractions with the total cluster mass is also evident. The impact of the aperture radius choice, when comparing integrated quantities at different redshifts, is tested: the standard definition of radius at a fixed overdensity with respect to critical density is compared with a definition based on the redshift dependent overdensity with respect to background density. We also present a detailed analysis of the scaling relations of the thermal SZ (Sunyaev Zel'dovich) Effect derived from MUSIC clusters. The integrated SZ brightness, Y, is related to the cluster total mass, M, as well as, the M-Y counterpart, more suitable for observational applications. Both laws are consistent with predictions from the self-similar model, showing a very low scatter. The effects of the gas fraction on the Y-M scaling and the presence of a possible redshift dependence on the Y-M scaling relation are also explored., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures, accepted for pubblication by MNRAS
