5. Spatial modelling in genetic evaluation of South African Holstein cattle population

Abstract

African dairy production systems are characterized by small herd size and low genetic connectedness between herds. This situation makes it difficult to accurately estimate environmental and genetic effects. We evaluated how accounting for spatial relationship between neighbouring herds impacts genetic evaluation of 305-days milk yield in South African Holstein cattle population. We analysed 305-days milk yield and pedigree data for 98,632 Holstein cows collected between 1957 and 2014 from 1,145 herds. Herd and herd-year effects were modelled as independent, whereas spatial effects were modelled as correlated between regions using the Besag model. The results show a regional variation of estimated breeding values and separation of spatial effect from herd effect. The spatial modelling of herd as random effect showed similar accuracy compared to modelling herd-year. Further studies integrating the genotype-by-environment interactions will be needed to better explore the benefits from spatial modelling in African smallholder dairy farming systems.

6. A method for partitioning trends in genetic mean and variance to understand/improve breeding practices

Abstract

Quantifying the sources of genetic change is essential for optimising breeding programmes. However, breeding programmes are often complex because many breeding groups are subject to different breeding actions. Understanding the contribution of these groups to changes in genetic mean and variance is essential to understanding genetic change in breeding programmes. Here we extend the previously developed method for analysing the contribution of groups to changes in genetic mean to analysing changes in genetic variance. We, expectedly, show that the contribution of females and males to change in genetic variance can differ and are not independent, indicating we should not look at the contributions in isolation

7. Global short-term forecasting of COVID-19 cases

Abstract

The continuously growing number of COVID-19 cases pressures healthcare services worldwide. Accurate short-term forecasting is thus vital to support country-level policy making. The strategies adopted by countries to combat the pandemic vary, generating diferent uncertainty levels about the actual number of cases. Accounting for the hierarchical structure of the data and accommodating extra-variability is therefore fundamental. We introduce a new modelling framework to describe the pandemic’s course with great accuracy and provide short-term daily forecasts for every country in the world. We show that our model generates highly accurate forecasts up to seven days ahead and use estimated model components to cluster countries based on recent events. We introduce statistical novelty in terms of modelling the autoregressive parameter as a function of time, increasing predictive power and fexibility to adapt to each country. Our model can also be used to forecast the number of deaths, study the efects of covariates (such as lockdown policies), and generate forecasts for smaller regions within countries. Consequently, it has substantial implications for global planning and decision making. We present forecasts and make all results freely available to any country in the world through an online Shiny dashboard.

Abstract

Introduction Gout is an illness characterized by the deposition of monosodium urate crystals in the joints or in soft tissues. The clinical manifestation results from inflammation of limb joints and pain with a rare presentation in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Case Report This study describes a 66-year-old white man with a chief complaint of "occasional pain in the left temporal muscle region." The case disclosed a gout manifestation in the TMJ after physical, radiographic, and ultrasonographic exams, and the patient was referred to proper treatment. Conclusion Goutmanifestation in the TMJ is an unusual presentation, and few reports in the English literature address to the subject. Gout in the TMJ should be included as a differential diagnosis for joint disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
