Abstract

The potential of a voltametric E-tongue coupled with a custom data pre-processing stage to improve the performance of machine learning techniques for rapid discrimination of tomato purées between cultivars of different economic value has been investigated. To this aim, a sensor array with screen-printed carbon electrodes modified with gold nanoparticles (GNP), copper nanoparticles (CNP) and bulk gold subsequently modified with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), was developed to acquire data to be transformed by a custom pre-processing pipeline and then processed by a set of commonly used classifiers. The GNP and CNP-modified electrodes, selected based on their sensitivity to soluble monosaccharides, demonstrated good ability in discriminating samples of different cultivars. Among the different data analysis methods tested, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) proved to be particularly suitable, obtaining an average F1 score of 99.26%. The pre-processing stage was beneficial in reducing the number of input features, decreasing the computational cost, i.e., the number of computing operations to be performed, of the entire method and aiding future cost-efficient hardware implementation. These findings proved that coupling the multi-sensing platform featuring properly modified sensors with the custom pre-processing method developed and LDA provided an optimal tradeoff between analytical problem solving and reliable chemical information, as well as accuracy and computational complexity. Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of an 8-week swimming training program on biomechanical and physiological responses during a swim-to-cycle simulation. Fifteen triathletes were randomly allocated to 3 groups: a 6-beat-kick group (K6), a 4-beat-kick group (K4), and a control group (CG). Biomechanical and physiological parameters were evaluated during a 400-m swim and a 10-minute cycle segment before (Pretraining) and after (Posttraining) the program. A lower stroke frequency (p = 0.004) and a higher stroke length (p = 0.002) was found in K6 compared with CG at Posttraining. A reduction in the K6 emerged between Pretraining and Posttraining during cycling for heart rate (p = 0.005), ... (p = 0.014), and energy expenditure (p = 0.008). A positive association emerged between swim kick index and cycling cadence in the K6 group. The improvement in stroke frequency and length observed in the K6 group could be explained as an improvement in swimming technique. Similarly, the reduction in energy expenditure during cycling at Posttraining for the K6 group suggests an improvement in the working economy. Triathlon coaches and athletes should consider the inclusion of high swim kick into their training programs to enhance swim and cycling performance, which can ultimately lead to an improvement in the swim-to-cycle transition and the overall triathlon performance. 31. A Stand-Alone Portable Potentiostat With Parallel Channels for Smart Electrochemical Analyses

Abstract

In recent years portable potentiostats have increased in popularity allowing to perform electrochemical analyses outside the laboratories, moving them to home or point of care (PoC) environments. In this context, the idea of performing multiple acquisitions at the same time is particularly attractive to deal with replicates or with simultaneous multiple quantitative assessments of different analytes, shortening the time required for the analyses and/or increasing data reliability. Multiple parallel channels on a compact and wireless device can maximize the overall system usability. In this article, a multichannel Wi-Fi-based portable potentiostat is described. The device features four independent channels, which can be conditioned with different voltages. The device was designed to minimize the component count and the power consumption, obtaining 23.5 mW per channel. The system was electrically characterized, obtaining an excellent linearity ( $R^{2} =0.9999$ ), a maximum channel-to-channel mismatch of 1% when the maximum current range is selected, and a negligible crosstalk among the channels. Moreover, the multichannel potentiostat was tested in the real case scenario of a semiquantitative evaluation of the anti-tissue transglutaminase target antibodies in celiac disease. Two replicates of IgG and IgA were simultaneously acquired, showing a good capability of separating the positive and the negative samples, with a reduction of the acquisition time of 76% with respect to a single channel solution.

Abstract

Featured Application: During sports training, it is relevant to monitor performance parameters, as, for example, stroke and kick count in swimmers. However, as stroke number can be detected by using a wearable "swim stroke meter", the number of kicks is usually detected by acquiring video images, which requires dedicated staff. The availability of a wearable kick-count device may be an opportunity to better monitor swim performance also during individual training. Monitoring sports training performances with automatic, low cost, low power, and ergonomic solutions is a topic of increasing importance in the research of the last years. A parameter of particular interest, which has not been extensively dealt with in a state-of-the-art way, is the count of kicks during swimming training sessions. Coaches and athletes set the training sessions to optimize the kick count and swim stroke rate to acquire velocity and acceleration during swimming. In regard to race distances, counting kicks can influence the athlete's performance. However, it is difficult to record the kick count without facing some issues about subjective interpretation. In this paper, a new method for kick count is proposed, based on only one triaxial accelerometer worn on the athlete's ankle. The algorithm was validated on data recorded during freestyle training sessions. An accuracy of 97.5% with a sensitivity of 99.3% was achieved. The proposed method shows good linearity and a slope of 1.01. These results overcome other state-of-the-art methods, proving that this method is a good candidate for a reliable, embedded kick count.
