This paper presents a switched-capacitor (SC) current integrator circuit for impedance measurement of tethered bilayer lipid membrane (tBLM) biosensors. The circuit comprises a small number of high performance components enabling enhanced experimental flexibility and reliability. The sensitivity is improved significantly by suppressing the output offset through pseudo-differential operation, using R-C components for the reference impedance. The sensing and reference electrodes are excited with low-amplitude differential voltage pulses and the current response to membrane resistance (RM) change of the tBLM biosensor is converted to voltage by a precision, low-noise SC integrator available as a single-package IC. Tests with both electrical models and actual biosensors demonstrated that the proposed circuit operates with high sensitivity and can be used in single chip versions for low-cost and high-sensitive tBLM biosensor arrays, featuring multiple electrode sites.

Deterioration of historic building materials has become more and more important since climate change has worsened the natural decay and the impact of atmospheric pollution. On the basis of these premises, the three-year European Collaborative Project NANOMATCH addresses this issue through the development of innovative consolidants specifically designed to meet the requirements of the historic building substrates, especially focusing on stone, wall paintings, wood and glass, and integrated in high performance products to renovate the market dedicated to the conservation of the built heritage.

Memristors are passive circuit elements that behave as resistors with memory. The recently illustrated experimental realization of memristive behaviour of Polysilicon Nanowires has triggered interest in this concept, which is promising to a wide variety of application areas that include neuromorphic circuits. In order to progress with practical implementations that use this technology we need to expand our understanding of the conduction mechanisms in these structures and of the underlying relationship between device behavior and process manufacturing parameters. In this paper we explore these mechanisms through detailed simulation, which includes model calibration and correlation with experimental results. Through fitting of the test results we identify a unique set of density of states that characterize the particular technology implemented.

The growing complexity of multiprocessor systems on chip make the integration of Intellectual Property (IP) blocks into a working system a major challenge. Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) facilitate a modular design approach which addresses the hardware challenges in designing such a system. Guaranteed communication services, offered by the AEthereal NoC, address the software challenges by making the system more robust and easier to design. This paper describes two existing bus-based reference designs and compares the original interconnects with an AEthereal NoC. We show through these two case study implementations that the area cost of the NoC, which is dominated by the number of network connections, is competitive with traditional interconnects. Furthermore, we show that the latency in the NoC-based design is still acceptable for our application.

In this article, we discuss design constraints to characterize efficient error recovery mechanisms for the NoC design environment. We explore error control mechanisms at the data link and network layers and present the schemes' architectural details. We investigate the energy efficiency, error protection efficiency, and performance impact of various error recovery mechanisms.
