Species with extensive geographical ranges pose special challenges to assessing drivers of wildlife disease, necessitating collaborative and large-scale analyses. The imperilled foothill yellow-legged frog ( Rana boylii ) inhabits a wide geographical range and variable conditions in rivers of California and Oregon (USA), and is considered threatened by the pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). To assess drivers of Bd infections over time and space, we compiled over 2000 datapoints from R. boylii museum specimens (collected 1897-2005) and field samples (2005-2021) spanning 9° of latitude. We observed a south-to-north spread of Bd detections beginning in the 1940s and increase in prevalence from the 1940s to 1970s, coinciding with extirpation from southern latitudes. We detected eight high-prevalence geographical clusters through time that span the species' geographical range. Field-sampled male R. boylii exhibited the highest prevalence, and juveniles sampled in autumn exhibited the highest loads. Bd infection risk was highest in lower elevation rain-dominated watersheds, and with cool temperatures and low stream-flow conditions at the end of the dry season. Violacein is a water-insoluble violet pigment produced by various Gram-negative bacteria. The compound and the bacteria that produce it have been gaining attention due to the antimicrobial and proposed antitumour properties of violacein and the possibility that strains producing it may have broad industrial uses. Bacteria that produce violacein have been isolated from diverse environments including fresh and ocean waters, glaciers, tropical soils, trees, fish and the skin of amphibians. We report here the isolation and characterization of six violacein-producing bacterial strains and three non-violacein-producing close relatives, each isolated from either an aquatic environment or moist food materials in northern California, USA. For each isolate, we characterized traditional phenotypes, generated and analysed draft genome sequences, and carried out multiple types of taxonomic, phylogenetic and phylogenomic analyses. Based on these analyses we assign putative identifications to the nine isolates, which include representatives of the genera Chromobacterium , Aquitalea , Iodobacter , Duganella , Massilia and Janthinobacterium . In addition, we discuss the utility of various metrics for taxonomic assignment in these groups including average nucleotide identity, whole genome phylogenetic analysis and extent of recent homologous recombination using the software program PopCOGenT.

Cold-tolerant bacteria are known to contaminate and cause defects in refrigerated foods. Defects in food products can be observed as changes in appearance, texture, and/or flavor that detract from the product's intended look, feel, or taste. Two distinct organisms were cultured from blue pigmented soymilk and tofu that had been left opened and expired in a home refrigerator. The blue coloration was reproduced when isolates were cultured in fresh, sterile soymilk. These strains also produced a variety of colony color morphologies when cultured on different media types. We report two draft genome sequences of the potential causative agents of blue discoloration of soy foods, Pseudomonas carnis strains UCD_MED3 and UCD_MED7 as well as the 16S rRNA gene sequences of co-occurring strains isolated from the defective soy samples but that did not cause blue discoloration when cultured in fresh soymilk; Serratia liquefaciens strains UCD_MED2 and UCD_MED5., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists., (© The author(s).)

Marine multicellular organisms host a diverse collection of bacteria, archaea, microbial eukaryotes, and viruses that form their microbiome. Such host-associated microbes can significantly influence the host's physiological capacities; however, the identity and functional role(s) of key members of the microbiome ("core microbiome") in most marine hosts coexisting in natural settings remain obscure. Also unclear is how dynamic interactions between hosts and the immense standing pool of microbial genetic variation will affect marine ecosystems' capacity to adjust to environmental changes. Here, we argue that significantly advancing our understanding of how host-associated microbes shape marine hosts' plastic and adaptive responses to environmental change requires (i) recognizing that individual host-microbe systems do not exist in an ecological or evolutionary vacuum and (ii) expanding the field toward long-term, multidisciplinary research on entire communities of hosts and microbes. Natural experiments, such as time-calibrated geological events associated with well-characterized environmental gradients, provide unique ecological and evolutionary contexts to address this challenge. Emerging infectious diseases are a growing threat to biodiversity worldwide. Outbreaks of the infectious disease chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), are implicated in the decline and extinction of numerous amphibian species. In Costa Rica, a major decline event occurred in 1987, more than two decades before this pathogen was discovered. The loss of many species in Costa Rica is assumed to be due to Bd-epizootics, but there are few studies that provide data from amphibians in the time leading up to the proposed epizootics. In this study, we provide new data on Bd infection rates of amphibians collected throughout Costa Rica, in the decades prior to the epizootics. We used a quantitative PCR assay to test for Bd presence in 1016 anuran museum specimens collected throughout Costa Rica. The earliest specimen that tested positive for Bd was collected in 1964. Across all time periods, we found an overall infection rate (defined as the proportion of Bd-positive individuals) of 4%. The number of infected individuals remained relatively low across all species tested and the range of Bd-positive specimens was shown to be geographically constrained up until the 1980s; when epizootics are hypothesized to have occurred. After that time, infection rate increased three-fold, and the range of specimens tested positive for Bd increased, with Bd-positive specimens collected across the entire country. Our results suggest that Bd dynamics in Costa Rica are more complicated than previously thought. The discovery of Bd's presence in the country preceding massive declines leads to a number of different hypotheses: 1) Bd invaded Costa Rica earlier than previously known, and spread more slowly than previously reported; 2) Bd invaded multiple times and faded out; 3) an endemic Bd lineage existed; 4) an earlier Bd lineage evolved into the current Bd lineage or hybridized with an invasive lineage; or 5) an earlier Bd lineage went extinct and a new invasion event occurred causing epizootics. To help visualize areas where future studies should take place, we provide a Bd habitat suitability model trained with local data. Studies that provide information on genetic lineages of Bd are needed to determine the most plausible spatial-temporal, host-pathogen dynamics that could best explain the epizootics resulting in amphibian declines in Costa Rica and throughout Central America., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Milk is a liquid food that possesses an important quantity of highly bioavailable macronutrients. In addition, it is readily accessible, as well as relatively inexpensive. Given that the knowledge of physicians about nutrition and food composition is deficient, in general, many of the dietary interventions recommended in diverse clinical settings lack a scientific basis. The aim of the present review was to produce a technical opinion that serves as a frame of reference to best sustain recommendations for consuming milk and dairy products as daily nutrition in the adult and older adult. The effects of milk and dairy products during the pediatric stage are not addressed in the present work. The Asociación Mexicana de Gastroenterología and the Asociación Mexicana de Gerontología y Geriatría jointly discussed and analyzed topics dealing with the legal designation of milk, the classification and nutritional profile of cow's milk, its nutritional characteristics, its consumption in the adult, intolerance to cow's milk, and associations of milk consumption with digestive tract alterations and other conditions. The pathogenic fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) has been associated with global amphibian declines, but it is often difficult to discern the relative importance of Bd as a causal agent in declines that have already occurred. Retrospective analyses of museum specimens have allowed researchers to associate the timing of Bd arrival with the timing of past amphibian declines. Cascades frogs (Rana cascadae) have experienced dramatic declines in northern California, but it is not clear whether the onset of these declines corresponds to the arrival of Bd. We used quantitative real-time PCR assays of samples collected from museum specimens to determine historical Bd prevalence in the northern California range of Cascades frogs. We detected Bd in 13 of 364 (3.5%) Cascades frog specimens collected between 1907 and 2003, with the first positive result from 1978. A Bayesian analysis suggested that Bd arrived in the region between 1973 and 1978, which corresponds well with the first observations of declines in the 1980s.

The morphogenesis of the sexual phase of seven species of Thelypteris subg. Cyclosorus (Thelypteridaceae) is described and compared. Spores of all species are monolete, ellipsoid and have positive photoblastism. They have Vittaria-type germination, germinal filaments are short and uniseriate, and Aspidium-type development. Adult gametophytes are spatulate-cordiform, and have wide wings with numerous glandular, marginal and superficial hairs. Antheridia have a narrow or widened basal cell, an undivided annular cell, and an opercular cell; antherozoids are liberated through three mechanisms. Archegonia have short necks and four triangular cells on the neck's mouth. The sporophyte's first leaf is lobed, with open dichotomous veins, glandular hairs similar to those of the gametophyte, and anomocytic stomata. Differences observed between the studied species are: spore size; ornamentation of the perispore; germination and emergence periods; size of hairs; developmental period of gametangia; and antherozoid liberation mechanisms through total detachment of the operculum, partial detachment of the operculum, and development of an apical pore through tearing of the operculum. These taxonomically valuable characters, combined with the sporophyte characteristics, can be useful tools in the identification of the species studied to the subg. Cyclosorus.

Annual von Bertalanffy growth parameters of the Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) in Cuban waters were estimated from a long term study (40 years) by length-based methods ELEFAN and the new version of SLCA. Data of around 800 000 lobsters (with carapace length ranging 14 to 199mm) were randomly sampled in artificial shelters (a non selective fishing gear very common in the lobster fishery), through the field monitory program established for this species since 1963 in 14 localities of southwestern Cuban shelf. The software ELEFAN showed problems to converge in an optimal combination of the instantaneous growth coefficient (K) and the asymptotic length (Linfinity) of the von Bertalanffy equation, whereas the new SLCA software produced value estimates of K between 0.20 and 0.27 year(-1) and values of Linfinity between 177 and 190 mm carapace length, all within the range reported in the literature. The standardized anomalies of both parameters showed the presence of cycles along the analyzed time series. Decadal variability in growth parameters was revealed through the spectral analysis indicating cycles of 16 and 20 years for K and of 16 years for Linfinity. The incidence of some factors such as biomass and temperature that modulate growth in this crustacean was explored, using a nonlinear multiple regression model. These combined factors explained 33% and 69% of the variability of K and Linfinity respectively. The growth coefficient appeared to be maximum with annual mean sea surface temperature of 28. 1 degrees C and the largest Linfinity is reached at a annual men biomass level of 23,000 t. These results should be the basis to understand the Cuban lobster population dynamics.

A diagnostic test was applied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico School of Medicine using a two-part format with 42 clinical cases and 210 multiple-choice items. Residents were randomized into two groups: group A (printed test) and group B (computerized test). Academic performance was measured by determination of media, standard deviation, and correct-answer score; the exam was measured by reliability, difficulty index, and discrimination index and question/item assessment were calculated for item analysis. Residents answered a survey questionnaire and time taken to answer was controlled. Results showed that the printed test had higher achievement; there was better reliability for computerized format, and resident opinion was more favorable toward computer use. The two parts of the test were analyzed and results were produced for the first part of the test; in part two, results were very similar. We conclude that lack of experience in computer use could be a determining factor in our results.
