Search

Cages ($r$-regular graphs of girth $g$ and minimum order) and their variants have been studied for over seventy years. Here we propose a new variant, "weighted cages". We characterize their existence; for cases $g=3,4$ we determine their order; we give Moore-like bounds and present some computational results.

The recent discoveries of proximate quantum spin-liquid compounds and their potential application in quantum computing informs the search for new candidate materials for quantum spin-ice and spin-liquid physics. While the majority of such work has centered on members of the pyrochlore family due to their inherently frustrated linked tetrahedral structure, the rare-earth pyrogermanates also show promise for possible frustrated magnetic behavior. With the familiar stoichiometry $RE_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$, these compounds generally have tetragonal symmetry with a rare-earth sublattice built of a spiral of alternating edge and corner sharing rare-earth site triangles. Studies on Dy$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ and Ho$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ have shown tunable low temperature antiferromagnetic order, a high frustration index and spin-ice like dynamics. Here we use neutron diffraction to study magnetic order in Er$_2$Ge$_2$O$_7$ (space group $P4_{1}2_{1}2$ ) and find the lowest yet Ne\'el temperature in the pyrogermanates of 1.15 K. Using neutron powder diffraction we find the magnetic structure to order with $k = (0,0,0)$ ordering vector, magnetic space group symmetry $P4_{1}^{'}2_{1}2^{'}$ and a refined Er moment of $m = 8.1 \mu_B$ - near the expected value for the Er$^{3+}$ free ion. Provocatively, the magnetic structure exhibits similar 'local-Ising' behavior to that seen in the pyrocholres where the Er moment points up or down along the short Er-Er bond. Upon applying a magnetic field we find a first order metamagnetic transition at $\sim$ 0.35 T to a lower symmetry $P2_{1}^{'}2_{1}^{'}2$ structure. This magnetic transition involves an inversion of Er moments aligned antiparallel to the applied field describing a class I spin-flip type transition, indicating a strong local anisotropy at the Er site - reminiscent of that seen in the spin-ice pyrochlores., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figs

Quasi-one-dimensional $A_2\text{Cr}_3\text{As}_3$ (with $A = \text{K, Cs, Rb}$) is an intriguing new family of superconductors which exhibit many similar features to the cuprate and iron-based unconventional superconductor families. Yet in contrast to these systems, no charge or magnetic ordering has been observed which could provide the electronic correlations presumed necessary for an unconventional superconducting pairing mechanism - an absence which defies predictions of first principles models. We report the results of neutron scattering experiments on polycrystalline $\text{K}_2\text{Cr}_3\text{As}_3$ $(T_c \sim 7\text{K})$ which probed the low temperature dynamics near $T_c$ . Neutron diffraction data evidence a strong response of the nuclear lattice to the onset of superconductivity while inelastic scattering reveals a highly dispersive column of intensity at the commensurate wavevector $q = (00\frac{1}{2})$ which loses intensity beneath $T_c$ - indicative of short-range magnetic fluctuations. Using linear spin-wave theory we model the observed scattering and suggest a possible structure to the short-range magnetic order. These observations suggest that $\text{K}_2\text{Cr}_3\text{As}_3$ is in close proximity to a magnetic instability and that the incipient magnetic order both couples strongly to the lattice and competes with superconductivity - in direct analogy with the iron-based superconductors.

Structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$ have been investigated using neutron and x-ray diffraction, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) measurements. Diffraction measurements indicate a continuous structural transition from orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) structure. RUS measurements show softening of natural frequencies at the structural transition, consistent with the elastic nature of the structural ground state. The structural transition temperatures in LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$ decrease with Ag composition until the monoclinic phase is completely suppressed at $x_c$ = 0.225. All of the evidence is consistent with the presence of an elastic quantum critical point in LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, one table

The structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ have been studied using neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and heat capacity measurements. The continuous orthorhombic-monoclinic structural phase transition in LaCu$_{6}$ is suppressed linearly with Au substitution until a complete suppression of the structural phase transition occurs at the critical composition, $x_{c}$ = 0.3. Heat capacity measurements at low temperatures indicate residual structural instability at $x_c$ that extends well into the orthorhombic phase. The instability is ferroelastic in nature, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing negligible coupling to electronic states near the Fermi level. The data and calculations presented here are consistent with the zero temperature termination of a continuous structural phase transition suggesting that the LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ series hosts an elastic quantum critical point., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of the spin waves of the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin ladder compound RbFe$_2$Se$_3$. The results reveal that the products, $SJ$'s, of the spin $S$ and the magnetic exchange interactions $J$'s along the antiferromagnetic (leg) direction and the ferromagnetic (rung) direction are comparable with those for the stripe ordered phase of the parent compounds of the iron-based superconductors. The universality of the $SJ$'s implies nearly universal spin wave dynamics and the irrelevance of the fermiology for the existence of the stripe antiferromagnetic order among various Fe-based materials., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($\delta_1$ 0 $\delta_2$) where $\delta_1 \sim 0.62$, $\delta_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $\delta_1 \sim 0.64$, $\delta_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

A combination of neutron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a pure antiferromagnetic stripe Rb$_{1-\delta}$Fe$_{1.5-\sigma}$S$_2$ is reported. A neutron diffraction experiment on a powder sample shows that a 98$\%$ volume fraction of the sample is in the antiferromagnetic stripe phase with rhombic iron vacancy order and a refined composition of Rb$_{0.66}$Fe$_{1.36}$S$_{2}$, and that only 2$\%$ of the sample is in the block antiferromagnetic phase with $\sqrt{5}\times \sqrt{5}$ iron vacancy order. Furthermore, a neutron diffraction experiment on a single crystal shows that there is only a single phase with the stripe antiferromagnetic order with the refined composition of Rb$_{0.78}$Fe$_{1.35}$S$_2$, while the phase with block antiferromagnetic order is absent. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the same crystal with the pure stripe phase reveal that the electronic structure is gapped at the Fermi level with a gap larger than 0.325 eV. The data collectively demonstrates that the extra 10$\%$ iron vacancies in addition to the rhombic iron vacancy order effectively impede the formation of the block antiferromagnetic phase; the data also suggest that the stripe antiferromagnetic phase with rhombic iron vacancy order is a Mott insulator., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published on PRB Rapid Communications

We present a neutron powder diffraction study of the monoclinic double perovskite systems Nd2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os), with magnetic atoms occupying both the A and B' sites. Our measurements reveal coupled spin ordering between the Nd and B' atoms with magnetic transition temperatures of 14 K for Nd2NaRuO6 and 16 K for Nd2NaOsO6. There is a Type I antiferromagnetic structure associated with the Ru and Os sublattices, with the ferromagnetic planes stacked along the c-axis and [110] direction respectively, while the Nd sublattices exhibit complex, canted antiferromagnetism with different spin arrangements in each system., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, Submitted to PRB

We report the structural and magnetic characterizations of Ba3TeCo3P2O14, Pb3TeCo3P2O14, and Pb3TeCo3V2O14, compounds that are based on the mineral Dugganite, which is isostructural to Langasites. The magnetic part of the structure consists of layers of Co2+ triangles. Nuclear and magnetic structures were determined through a co-refinement of synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction data. In contrast to the undistorted P321 Langasite structure of Ba3TeCo3P2O14, a complex structural distortion yielding a large supercell is found for both Pb3TeCo3P2O14 and Pb3TeCo3V2O14. Comparison of the three compounds studied along with the zinc analog Pb3TeZn3P2O14, also characterized here, suggests that the distortion is driven by Pb2+ lone pairs; as such, the Pb compounds crystallize in a pyroelectric space group, P2. Magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements were performed to characterize the magnetic behavior. All three compounds become antiferromagnetic with N\'eel temperatures TN ~ 21 K (Ba3TeCo3P2O14), ~ 13 K (Pb3TeCo3P2O14), and ~ 8 K (Pb3TeCo3V2O14), and they exhibit magnetic transitions at high applied magnetic fields, suggesting intrinsically complex magnetic behavior for tetrahedrally coordinated d7 Co2+ in this structure type., Comment: Submitted to Chemistry of Materials, 37 double spaced pages, 8 tables, 12 figures

The usual classical behaviour of S = 3/2, B-site ordered double perovskites generally results in simple, commensurate magnetic ground states. In contrast, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements for the S = 3/2 systems La2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os) reveal an incommensurate magnetic ground state for La2NaRuO6 and a drastically suppressed ordered moment for La2NaOsO6. This behaviour is attributed to the large monoclinic structural distortions of these double perovskites. The distortions have the effect of weakening the nearest neighbour superexchange interactions, presumably to an energy scale that is comparable to the next nearest neighbour superexchange. The exotic ground states in these materials can then arise from a competition between these two types of antiferromagnetic interactions, providing a novel mechanism for achieving frustration in the double perovskite family., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to PRB

Neutron powder diffraction and inelastic measurements were performed examining the 5d pyrochlore Y$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. Temperature dependent measurements were performed between 3.4 K and 290 K, spanning the magnetic transition at 155 K. No sign of any structural or disorder induced phase transition was observed over the entire temperature range. In addition, no sign of magnetic long-range order was observed to within the sensitivity of the instrumentation. These measurements do not rule out long range magnetic order, but the neutron powder diffraction structural refinements do put an upper bound for the ordered iridium moment of $\sim$ 0.2 $\mu_B /$Ir (for a magnetic structure with wave vector $Q \neq 0$) or $\sim$ 0.5 $\mu_B /$Ir (for Q = 0)., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures

Ag2CrO2 is an S=3/2 frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet without orbital degree of freedom. With decreasing temperature, a 4-sublatice spin state develops. However, a long-range partially disordered state with 5 sublattices abruptly appears at TN=24 K, accompanied by a structural distortion, and persists at least down to 2 K. The spin-lattice coupling stabilizes the anomalous state, which is expected to appear only in limited ranges of further-neighbor interactions and temperature. It was found that the spin-lattice coupling is a common feature in triangular lattice antiferromagnets with multiple-sublattice spin states, since the triangular lattice is elastic., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

The magnetic moment in the parent phase of the iron-pnictide superconductors varies with composition even when the nominal charge of iron is unchanged. We propose the spin-lattice coupling due to the magneto-volume effect as the primary origin of this effect, and formulate a Landau theory to describe the dependence of the moment to the Fe-As layer separation. We then compare the superconductive critical temperature of doped iron pnictides to the local moment predicted by the theory, and suggest that the spin-phonon coupling may play a role in the superconductivity of this compound.

The nature of the superconducting state in the recently discovered Fe-based superconductors1-3 is the subject of intense scrutiny. Neutron scattering investigations have already elucidated a strong correlation between magnetism and superconductivity in the form of a spin resonance in the magnetic excitation spectrum4-7. A central unanswered question concerns the nature of the normal state spin fluctuations which may be responsible for the pairing mechanism. Here we show inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Fe1.04Te0.73Se0.27, not superconducting in bulk, and FeTe0.51Se0.49, a bulk superconductor. These measurements demonstrate that the spin fluctuation spectrum is dominated by two-dimensional incommensurate excitations near the (1/2,1/2) (square lattice (pi,0)) wavevector, the wavevector of interest in other Fe-based superconductors, that extend to energies at least as high as 300 meV. Most importantly, the spin excitations in Fe1+yTe1-xSex exhibit four-fold symmetry about the (1,0) (square lattice (pi,pi)) wavevector and are described by the identical wavevector as the normal state spin excitations in the high-TC cuprates8-12 demonstrating a commonality between the magnetism in these classes of materials which perhaps extends to a common origin for superconductivity., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We have compared the Tenerife data with the {\it COBE} DMR two-year data in the declination +40\deg region of the sky observed by the Tenerife experiment. Using the Galactic plane signal at $\sim 30$ GHz, we show that the two data sets are cross-calibrated to within 5%. The high Galactic latitude data were investigated for the presence of common structures with the properties of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations. The most prominent feature in the Tenerife data ($\Delta T \sim 80\mu$K) is evident in both the 53 and 90 GHz DMR maps and has the Planckian spectrum expected for CMB anisotropy. The cross-correlation function of the Tenerife and DMR scans is indicative of common structure and at zero lag has the value $C(0)^{1/2}=34^{+13}_{-15}\: \mu$K. The combination of the spatial and spectral information from the two data sets is consistent with the presence of cosmic microwave background anisotropies common to both.
