Search

With the ever-increasing number of light curve solutions of contact binary systems increasing number of potential bright red nova progenitors are being reported. There remains, however, only one confirmed event. In the present study we undertake a comprehensive review of orbital stability of contact binary systems considering the effects of the stellar internal composition (metallicity) and age on the evolution of the gyration radius and its effect on the instability mass ratio of contact binaries. We find that both metallicity and age have an independent effect on orbital stability with metal poor and older systems being more stable. The combined effects of age and metallicity are quite profound such that for most systems with primaries of solar mass or greater which are halfway or more through the main sequence lifespans have instability mass ratio at levels where the secondary component would be below the hydrogen fusion mass limit. We find that from the currently available solutions we cannot confidently assign any system as unstable. Although we identify 8 potential red nova progenitors all have methodological or astrophysical concerns which lower our confidence in designating any of them as potential merger candidates., Comment: 9 Pages, 3 Figures and 3 Tables. Observations of polarization position angle ($\theta$) standards made from 2014 to 2023 with the High Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) and other HIPPI-class polarimeters in both hemispheres are used to investigate their variability. Multi-band data were first used to thoroughly recalibrate the instrument performance by bench-marking against carefully selected literature data. A novel Co-ordinate Difference Matrix (CDM) approach - which combines pairs of points - was then used to amalgamate monochromatic ($g^\prime$ band) observations from many observing runs and re-determine $\theta$ for 17 standard stars. The CDM algorithm was then integrated into a fitting routine and used to establish the impact of stellar variability on the measured position angle scatter. The approach yields variability detections for stars on long time scales that appear stable over short runs. The best position angle standards are $\ell$ Car, $o$ Sco, HD 154445, HD 161056 and $\iota^1$ Sco which are stable to $\leq$ 0.123$^\circ$. Position angle variability of 0.27-0.82$^\circ$, significant at the 3-$\sigma$ level, is found for 5 standards, including the Luminous Blue Variable HD 160529 and all but one of the other B/A-type supergiants (HD 80558, HD 111613, HD 183143 and 55 Cyg), most of which also appear likely to be variable in polarization magnitude ($p$) - there is no preferred orientation for the polarization in these objects, which are all classified as $\alpha$ Cygni variables. Despite this we make six key recommendations for observers - relating to data acquisition, processing and reporting - that will allow them to use these standards to achieve $<$ 0.1$^\circ$ precision in the telescope position angle with similar instrumentation, and allow data sets to be combined more accurately., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 17 tables, 4 appendices; accepted to MNRAS. Low mass ratio contact binary systems are more likely to have unstable orbits and potentially merge. In addition, such systems exhibit characteristics such as starspots and high energy emissions (UV) suggestive of chromospheric and magnetic activity. Light curve modelling of ten contact binary systems is reported. All were found to be of extreme low mass ratio ranging from 0.122 to 0.24 and three were found to be potentially unstable and possible merger candidates. Filling of the infrared Calcium absorption lines is a marker of increased chromospheric activity. We use the available LAMOST spectra along with matched standard spectra (broadened for rotation) to measure the excess filling of the central core depression flux of the two main infrared Calcium absorption lines at 8542 and 8662 angstroms. We find that all reported contact binaries have excess filling of the core flux in the infrared Calcium lines. Three of the systems reported were also observed by the GALEX mission and we find that all three have features of excess ultraviolet emissions further adding evidence for increased chromospheric activity in low mass ratio contact binaries. Analysis of both orbital stability and absorption line filling is dependent on the determination of geometric and absolute parameters from light curve modelling. Not an insignificant number of contact binary light curves exhibit the O'Connell effect, usually attributed to starspots. We present time-series linear-polarization observations of the bright O4 supergiant $\zeta$ Puppis. The star is found to show polarization variation on timescales of around an hour and longer. Many of the observations were obtained contemporaneously with Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) photometry. We find that the polarization varies on similar timescales to those seen in the TESS light-curve. The previously reported 1.78-day photometric periodicity is seen in both the TESS and polarization data. The amplitude ratio of photometry to polarization is ~9 for the periodic component and the polarization variation is oriented along position angle ~70 deg-160 deg. Higher-frequency stochastic variability is also seen in both datasets with an amplitude ratio of ~19 and no preferred direction. We model the polarization expected for a rotating star with bright photospheric spots and find that models that fit the photometric variation produce too little polarization variation to explain the observations. We suggest that the variable polarization is more likely the result of scattering from the wind, with corotating interaction regions producing the periodic variation and a clumpy outflow producing the stochastic component. The orbital stability of contact binary systems has been receiving considerable attention recently. Theoretical studies indicate that merger is likely to occur at very low mass ratios, but the actual mass ratio at which merger may take place is likely to be variable and dependent on the mass of the primary. We consider the effects of metal content on the orbital stability of contact binary systems by modelling the gyration radius of a rotating and tidally distorted primary component at various values of metallicity in the range -1.25 to +0.5. We determine the instability mass ratio range for contact binary systems with a low mass primary in the range 0.6M(sun) to 1.4M(sun) at various metallicity levels and show that systems with low metallicity have an instability mass ratio lower than those with higher metal content and therefore are likely to be more stable. We illustrate the effect through light curve analysis of two otherwise very similar contact binary systems, except for different metallicity. With increasing number of contact binary discoveries and the recognition that luminous red novae are the result of contact binary merger events, there has been a significant increase in the number of light curve solutions appearing in the literature. One of the key elements of such solutions is the assignment and fixing of the effective temperature of the primary component (T1). Sometimes much is made of the assigned value with expectation of significantly different light curve solutions even though theoretical considerations suggest that absolute value of T1 has little influence on the geometric elements of the light curve solution. In this study we show that assigning T1 over a range of 1000K has no significant influence on the light curve solutions of two extreme low mass ratio contact binary systems. In addition, we explore the use of photometric spectral energy distribution as a potential standard for assigning T1 in the absence of spectroscopic observations., Comment: 7 pages, 4 tables and 2 figures. The study reports photometric and spectroscopic observations of two recently recognised contact binary systems. Both systems show total eclipses and analysis of the light curves indicate both have a very low mass ratios of less than 0.3. We derive absolute parameters from colour and distance based calibrations and show that although both have low mass ratios they are likely to be in a stable orbit and unlikely to merge. Multi-band (B, V and R) photometric and spectroscopic observations of six poorly studied contact binaries carried out at the Western Sydney University and Las Cumbres Observatory were analysed using a recent version of the Wilson-Devenney code. All six were found to be of extreme low mass ratio ranging from 0.073 to 0.149. All are of F spectral class with the mass of the primary component ranging from 1.05Msun to 1.48Msun. None show light curve features of enhanced choromospheric activity (O'Connell Effect) however five of the six do have significant ultraviolet excess indicating presence of increased magnetic and chromospheric activity. Period analysis based on available survey data suggests two systems have a slowly increasing period suggesting mass transfer from the secondary to the primary, two have a slow declining period with likely mass transfer from primary to the secondary while one shows a steady period and one undergoing transition from a declining to increasing period suggesting possible mass transfer reversal. We also compare light curve solutions against theoretical markers of orbital stability and show that three of six systems have mass ratios within the theoretical instability limit and maybe regarded as potential merger candidates., Comment: 10 Pages. 5 Tables. 4 Figures. Photometric observations and analysis of twelve previously poorly studied contact binary systems is presented. All show total eclipses and have extremely low mass ratios ranging from 0.072 to 0.15. Also, all show characteristics of orbital instability with mass ratios within the theoretical orbital instability range. We have built and tested a compact, low-cost, but very-high-performance astronomical polarimeter based on a continuously rotating half-wave plate and a high-speed imaging detector. The polarimeter is suitable for small telescopes up to ~1 m in aperture. The optical system provides very high transmission over a wide wavelength range from the atmospheric UV cutoff to ~1000 nm. The high-quantum-efficiency, low-noise and high-speed of the detectors enable bright stars to be observed with high-precision as well as polarization imaging of extended sources. We have measured the performance of the instrument on 20 cm and 60 cm aperture telescopes. We show some examples of the type of science possible with this instrument. The study presents a simplified method to identify potential bright red nova progenitors based on the amplitude of the light curve and infrared (J-H) colour of a contact binary system. We employ published criteria for contact binary orbital instability to show that the amplitude of the light curve for a given contact system with a low mass (< 1.4Msun) primary must be less than a specified value for it to be potentially unstable. Using this we search the photometric data of a large survey to identify about 50 potential bright red nova progenitors. We analyse the survey photometry of each to determine the mass ratio and from the estimated mass of the primary other physical parameters of the systems. We show that each system has physical characteristics indicating potential orbital instability. We present photometric analysis of three bright red nova progenitor contact binary systems: ASAS J082151-0612.6, TYC 7281-269-1 and TYC 7275-1968-1. The primary components in all three systems are solar-type low mass stars with radii somewhat larger than their Zero Age Main Sequence counterparts. The secondaries, as in most contact binary systems, have radii and luminosities well above their main sequence counterparts. All three have extreme low mass ratios ranging from 0.075 to 0.097 and two have high degrees of contact, in excess of 75%. All three have mass ratios and separations below the theoretical values for orbital stability. Chromospheric activity, a hallmark of magnetic activity and magnetic braking, considered important in mediating angular momentum loss, is also explored. All three systems demonstrate the O'Connell effect, and all systems require the introduction of star spots for a better light curve solution. In addition, we show that ASAS J082151-0612.6 and TYC 7281-269-1 have a UV colour excess in the range indicating high chromospheric activity. Another measure of potential significant magnetic activity is X-Ray luminosity; TYC 7275-1968-1, and probably also TYC 7281-269-1, have X-Ray luminosity well above other contact binary systems. Here we report the detection of polarization variations due to nonradial modes in the beta Cephei star beta Crucis. In so doing we confirm 40-year-old predictions of pulsation-induced polarization variability and its utility in asteroseismology for mode identification. In an approach suited to other beta Cep stars, we combine polarimetry with space-based photometry and archival spectroscopy to identify the dominant nonradial mode in polarimetry, f2, as l = 3, m = -3 (in the m-convention of Dziembowski) and determine the stellar axis position angle as 25 (or 205) +/- 8 deg. The rotation axis inclination to the line of sight was derived as approx. 46 deg. from combined polarimetry and spectroscopy, facilitating identification of additional modes and allowing for asteroseismic modelling. This reveals a star of 14.5 +/- 0.5 Solar masses and a convective core containing approx. 28% of its mass -- making beta Crucis the most massive star with an asteroseismic age., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, 8 tables (incl. The study presents photometric analysis of the completely eclipsing contact binary systems TYC 8351-1081-1 and ASAS J210406-0522.3. TYC 8351-1081-1 is an extremely low mass ratio (q=0.086) system with high degree of contact (f=0.66) while ASAS J210406-0522.3 is found to be in marginal contact (f=0.08) with a relatively low mass ratio of 0.272. There is good thermal contact in both systems with only a small difference in the temperature of the components. The systems have been observed by a number sky surveys over the past 20 years. We compare the light curve solutions from up to three of these surveys and find that survey photometric data manually analysed is robust and yields results comparable to dedicated ground based photometry. There is evidence of significant luminosity transfer from the primary to the secondary, on the order of 0.5LJ for TYC 8351-1081-1 and 0.06LJ for ASAS J210406-0522.3. There appears to be no change in period of either system over the past 20 years and theoretical angular momentum loss is below current measurement threshold in both cases. We also show that the mass ratio and separation are well above the theoretical values for orbital instability in both cases. ZZ PsA is a neglected bright southern contact binary system with maximum V magnitude of 9.26. We present the first multi-band photometric analysis and find the system to be in deep contact (>95%) with an extremely low mass ratio of 0.078. The primary has a mass of 1.213 M? in keeping with its reported spectral class of F6. In order to determine if ZZ PsA is a merger candidate we outline the current status regarding the instability mass ratio and develop new relationship linking the mass of the primary to the instability mass ratio of the system and the degree of contact. We find that ZZ PsA along with two other examples from the literature to be merger candidates while an additional three require further observations to be confirmed as potential merger candidates., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures Accepted MNRAS

We report the detection of phase-locked polarization in the bright ($m_V$=2.98-3.24) semidetached eclipsing binary $\mu^1$ Sco (HD 151890). The phenomenon was observed in multiple photometric bands using two different HIPPI-class (HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument)polarimeters with telescopes ranging in size from 35-cm to 3.9-m. The peak-to-trough amplitude of the polarization is wavelength dependent and large, $\sim$700 parts-per-million in green light, and is easily seen with even the smallest telescope. We fit the polarization phase curve with a SYNSPEC/VLIDORT polarized radiative transfer model and a Wilson-Devinney geometric formalism, which we describe in detail. Light from each star reflected by the photosphere of the other, together with a much smaller contribution from tidal distortion and eclipse effects, wholly accounts for the polarization amplitude. In the past polarization in semidetached binaries has been attributed mostly to scattering from extra-stellar gas. We present 1 to 10GHz radio continuum flux density, spectral index, polarisation and Rotation Measure (RM) images of the youngest known Galactic Supernova Remnant (SNR) G1.9+0.3, using observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). We have conducted an expansion study spanning 8 epochs between 1984 and 2017, yielding results consistent with previous expansion studies of G1.9+0.3. We find a mean radio continuum expansion rate of ($0.78 \pm 0.09$) per cent year$^{-1}$ (or $\sim8900$ km s$^{-1}$ at an assumed distance of 8.5 kpc), although the expansion rate varies across the SNR perimeter. In the case of the most recent epoch between 2016 and 2017, we observe faster-than-expected expansion of the northern region. We find a global spectral index for G1.9+0.3 of $-0.81\pm0.02$ (76 MHz$-$10 GHz). Towards the northern region, however, the radio spectrum is observed to steepen significantly ($\sim -$1). Towards the two so called (east & west) "ears" of G1.9+0.3, we find very different RM values of 400-600 rad m$^{2}$ and 100-200 rad m$^{2}$ respectively. The fractional polarisation of the radio continuum emission reaches (19 $\pm$ 2)~per~cent, consistent with other, slightly older, SNRs such as Cas~A., Comment: 17 Pages, 13 Figures

We describe the High-Precision Polarimetric Instrument-2 (HIPPI-2) a highly versatile stellar polarimeter developed at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). Two copies of HIPPI-2 have been built and used on the 60-cm telescope at Western Sydney University's (WSU) Penrith Observatory, the 8.1-m Gemini North Telescope at Mauna Kea and extensively on the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT). The precision of polarimetry, measured from repeat observations of bright stars in the SDSS g' band, is better than 3.5 ppm (parts per million) on the 3.9-m AAT and better than 11 ppm on the 60-cm WSU telescope. The precision is better at redder wavelengths and poorer in the blue. On the Gemini North 8-m telescope the performance is limited by a very large and strongly wavelength dependent telescope polarization that reached 1000's of ppm at blue wavelengths and is much larger than we have seen on any other telescope., Comment: 25 pages, 14 Figures, Accepted by Publcations of the Astronomical Society of Australia

We report six stellar occultations by (Saturn IX) Phoebe, an irregular satellite of Saturn, obtained between mid-2017 and mid-2019. The 2017 July 06 event is the first stellar occultation by an irregular satellite ever observed. The occultation chords were compared to a 3D shape model of the satellite obtained from Cassini observations. The rotation period available in the literature led to a sub-observer point at the moment of the observed occultations where the chords could not fit the 3D model. A procedure was developed to identify the correct sub-observer longitude. It allowed us to obtain the rotation period with improved precision over currently known value from literature. We show that the difference between the observed and the predicted sub-observer longitude suggests two possible solutions for the rotation period. By comparing these values with recently observed rotational light curves and single-chord stellar occultations, we can identify the best solution for Phoebe's rotational period as $9.27365 \pm 0.00002$ h. From the stellar occultations, we also obtained 6 geocentric astrometric positions in the ICRS as realised by the Gaia-DR2 with uncertainties at the 1-mas level., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Close binary systems often show linear polarization varying over the binary period, usually attributed to light scattered from electrons in circumstellar clouds. One of the brightest close binary systems is Spica (Alpha Virginis) consisting of two B type stars orbiting with a period of just over 4 days. Past observations of Spica have shown low polarization with no evidence for variability. Here we report new high-precision polarization observations of Spica that show variation with an amplitude ~200 parts-per-million (ppm). Using a new modelling approach we show that the phase-dependent polarization is primarily due to reflected light from the primary off the secondary and vice versa. The stars reflect only a few per-cent of the incident light, but the reflected light is very highly polarized. The polarization results show that the binary orbit is clockwise and the position angle of the line of nodes is 130.4 +/- 6.8 degrees in agreement with Intensity Interferometer results. We present a detailed study of new Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and XMM-Newton observations of LHA 120-N 70 (hereafter N 70), a spherically shaped object in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) classified as a superbubble (SB). Both archival and new observations were used to produce high quality radio-continuum, X-ray and optical images. The radio spectral index of N 70 is estimated to be $\alpha=-0.12\pm 0.06$ indicating that while a supernova or supernovae have occurred in the region at some time in the distant past, N70 is not the remnant of a single specific supernova. N70 exhibits limited polarisation with a maximum fractional polarisation of 9% in a small area of the north west limb. We estimate the size of N 70 to have a diameter of 104 pc ($\pm 1$ pc). The morphology of N 70 in X-rays closely follows that in radio and optical, with most X-ray emission confined within the bright shell seen at longer wavelengths. Purely thermal models adequately fit the soft X-ray spectrum which lacks harder emission (above 1 keV). We also examine the pressure output of N 70 where the values for the hot (PX) and warm (PHii) phase are consistent with other studied Hii regions. However, the dust-processed radiation pressure (PIR) is significantly smaller than in any other object studied in Lopez et al. (2013). Jets from rotation-powered pulsars have so far only been observed in systems moving subsonically trough their ambient medium and/or embedded in their progenitor supernova remnant (SNR). Supersonic runaway pulsars are also expected to produce jets, but they have not been confirmed so far. We investigated the nature of the jet-like structure associated to the INTEGRAL source IGR J11014-6103 (the "Lighthouse nebula"). The source is a neutron star escaping its parent SNR MSH 11-61A supersonically at a velocity exceeding 1000 km/s. We observed the Lighthouse nebula and its jet-like X-ray structure through dedicated high spatial resolution observations in X-rays (Chandra) and radio band (ATCA). Our results show that the feature is a true pulsar's jet. It extends highly collimated over >11pc, displays a clear precession-like modulation, and propagates nearly perpendicular to the system direction of motion, implying that the neutron star's spin axis in IGR J11014-6103 is almost perpendicular to the direction of the kick received during the supernova explosion. Our findings suggest that jets are common to rotation-powered pulsars, and demonstrate that supernovae can impart high kick velocities to misaligned spinning neutron stars, possibly through distinct, exotic, core-collapse mechanisms., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. The XMM-Newton survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) revealed 3053 X-ray sources with the majority expected to be active galactic nuclei (AGN) behind the SMC. However, the high stellar density in this field often does not allow assigning unique optical counterparts and hinders source classification. On the other hand, the association of X-ray point sources with radio emission can be used to select background AGN with high confidence, and to constrain other object classes like pulsar wind nebula. To classify X-ray and radio sources, we use clear correlations of X-ray sources found in the XMM-Newton survey with radio-continuum sources detected with ATCA and MOST. Deep radio-continuum images were searched for correlations with X-ray sources of the XMM-Newton SMC-survey point-source catalogue as well as galaxy clusters seen with extended X-ray emission. Eighty eight discrete radio sources were found in common with the X-ray point-source catalogue in addition to six correlations with extended X-ray sources. One source is identified as a Galactic star and eight as galaxies. Eight radio sources likely originate in AGN that are associated with clusters of galaxies seen in X-rays. One source is a PWN candidate. We obtain 43 new candidates for background sources located behind the SMC. A series of new radio-continuum ({\lambda}=20, 13, 6 and 3 cm) mosaic images focused on the NGC55 galactic system were produced using archived observational data from the Australia Telescope Compact Array. These new images are both very sensitive (down to rms=33 {\mu}Jy) and feature high angular resolution (down to <4"). Using these newly created images, 66 previously unidentified discrete sources are identified. Of these sources, 46 were classified as background sources, 11 as HII regions and 6 as supernova remnant candidates. This relatively low number of SNR candidates detected coupled with the low number of large HII regions is consistent with the estimated low star formation rate of the galaxy at 0.06 solar masses per year. Our spectral index map shows that the core of galaxy appears to have a shallow spectral index between {\alpha} = -0.2 and -0.4. We present a detailed study of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of a newly discovered Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) supernova remnant (SNR), SNR J0533-7202. This object follows a horseshoe morphology, with a size 37 pc x 28 pc (1-pc uncertainty in each direction). It exhibits a radio spectrum with the intrinsic synchrotron spectral index of alpha= -0.47+-0.06 between 73 and 6 cm. We report detections of regions showing moderately high fractional polarisation at 6 cm, with a peak value of 36+-6% and a mean fractional polarisation of 12+-7%. We also estimate an average rotation measure across the remnant of -591 rad m^-2. The current lack of deep X-ray observation precludes any conclusion about high-energy emission from the remnant. For a topological space it is well-known that the associated closure and interior operators provide equivalent descriptions of set-theoretic topology; but it is not generally true in other categories, consequently it makes sense to define and study the notion of interior operators I in the context of fuzzy set theory, where we can find categories in a lattice-theoretical context. Fuzzy interior operators have been studied by U. Hohle, A. Sostak and others, (1999), these works were used to describe L-topologies on a set X. More recently, M. Diker, S. Dost and A. Ugur (2009) present interior and closure operators on texture spaces in the sense of Cech, and F. G. Shi(2009) studies interior operators via L-fuzzy neighborhood systems. The aim of this paper is to propose a more general theory of variable basis fuzzy interior operators, employing both categorical tools and the lattice theoretical foundations investigated by S. E. We present and discuss a new catalogue of 52 compact HII regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and a newly created deep 1420 MHz (\lambda=20 cm) radio-continuum image of the N19 region located in the southwestern part of the SMC. The new images were created by merging 1420 MHz radio-continuum archival data from the Australian Telescope Compact Array. We present radio-continuum observations of the Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) candidate, G308.3-1.4, made with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope and the Parkes radio telescope. Our results combined with Chandra X-ray images confirm that G308.3-1.4 is a bona fide SNR with a shell morphology. The SNR has average diameter of D = 34 +- 19 pc, radio spectral index of alpha = -0.68 +- 0.16 and linear polarisation of 10 +- 1%; We estimate the SNR magnetic field B = 29 uG. Employing a Sigma-D relation, we estimate a distance to G308.3-1.4 of d = 19 +- 11 kpc. The radio morphology, although complex, suggests a smaller size for the SNR than previously implied in an X-Ray study. These results imply that G308.3-1.4 is a young to middle-aged SNR in the early adiabatic phase of evolution.

We present new X-ray and radio data of the LMC SNR candidate DEM L205, obtained by XMM-Newton and ATCA, along with archival optical and infrared observations. We use data at various wavelengths to study this object and its complex neighbourhood, in particular in the context of the star formation activity, past and present, around the source. We analyse the X-ray spectrum to derive some remnant's properties, such as age and explosion energy. Supernova remnant features are detected at all observed wavelengths: soft and extended X-ray emission is observed, arising from a thermal plasma with a temperature kT between 0.2 keV and 0.3 keV. Optical line emission is characterised by an enhanced [SII]/Halpha ratio and a shell-like morphology, correlating with the X-ray emission. The source is not or only tentatively detected at near-infrared wavelengths (< 10 microns), but there is a detection of arc-like emission at mid and far-infrared wavelengths (24 and 70 micron) that can be unambiguously associated with the remnant. We suggest that thermal emission from dust heated by stellar radiation and shock waves is the main contributor to the infrared emission. Finally, an extended and faint non-thermal radio emission correlates with the remnant at other wavelengths and we find a radio spectral index between -0.7 and -0.9, within the range for SNRs. The size of the remnant is ~79x64 pc and we estimate a dynamical age of about 35000 years. We definitely confirm DEM L205 as a new SNR. This object ranks amongst the largest remnants known in the LMC. The numerous massive stars and the recent outburst in star formation around the source strongly suggest that a core-collapse supernova is the progenitor of this remnant. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is rich in supernova remnants (SNRs) which can be investigated in detail with radio, optical and X-ray observations. SNR J0453-6829 is an X-ray and radio-bright remnant in the LMC, within which previous studies revealed the presence of a pulsar wind nebula (PWN), making it one of the most interesting SNRs in the Local Group of galaxies. We study the emission of SNR J0453-6829 to improve our understanding of its morphology, spectrum, and thus the emission mechanisms in the shell and the PWN of the remnant. We obtained new radio data with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and analysed archival XMM-Newton observations of SNR J0453-6829. We studied the morphology of SNR J0453-6829 from radio, optical and X-ray images and investigated the energy spectra in the different parts of the remnant. Our radio results confirm that this LMC SNR hosts a typical PWN. The prominent central core of the PWN exhibits a radio spectral index alpha_Core of -0.04+/-0.04, while in the rest of the SNR shell the spectral slope is somewhat steeper with alpha_Shell = -0.43+/-0.01. We detect regions with a mean polarisation of P ~ (12+/-4)% at 6 cm and (9+/-2)% at 3 cm. The full remnant is of roughly circular shape with dimensions of (31+/-1) pc x (29+/-1) pc. The spectral analysis of the XMM-Newton EPIC and RGS spectra allowed us to derive physical parameters for the SNR. Somewhat depending on the spectral model, we obtain for the remnant a shock temperature of around 0.2 keV and estimate the dynamical age to 12000-15000 years. Using a Sedov model we further derive an electron density in the X-ray emitting material of 1.56 cm^-3, typical for LMC remnants, a large swept-up mass of 830 solar masses, and an explosion energy of 7.6 x 10^50 erg. We present a study of new Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of supernova remnant, SNR J0536-6735. This remnant appears to follow a shell morphology with a diameter of D=36x29 pc (with 1 pc uncertainty in each direction). There is an embedded Hii region on the northern limb of the remnant which made various analysis and measurements (such as flux density, spectral index and polarisation) difficult. The radio-continuum emission followed the same structure as the optical emission, allowing for extent and flux density estimates at 20 cm. We estimate a surface brightness for the SNR at 1 GHz of 2.55x10^-21 W m^-2 Hz^-1 sr^-1. Also, we detect a distinctive radio-continuum point source which confirms the previous suggestion of this remnant being associated with a pulsar wind nebulae (PWN). The tail of this remnant isn't seen in the radio-continuum images and is only seen in the optical and X-ray images., Comment: 10 pages 4 figures, accepted for publication in SAJ

We present a series of new high-sensitivity and high-resolution radio-continuum images of M31 at \lambda=20 cm (\nu=1.4 GHz). These new images were produced by merging archived 20 cm radio-continuum observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) telescope. Images presented here are sensitive to rms=60 \mu Jy and feature high angular resolution (<10"). A complete sample of discrete radio sources have been catalogued and analysed across 17 individual VLA projects. We identified a total of 864 unique discrete radio sources across the field of M31. One of the most prominent regions in M31 is the ring feature for which we estimated total integrated flux of 706 mJy at \lambda=20 cm. We compare here, detected sources to those listed in Gelfand et al. (2004) at \lambda=92 cm and find 118 sources in common to both surveys. The majority (61%) of these sources exhibit a spectral index of \alpha <-0.6 indicating that their emission is predominantly non-thermal in nature. We present two new catalogues of radio-continuum sources in the field of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These catalogues contain sources found at 4800 MHz (lambda=6 cm) and 8640 MHz (lambda=3 cm). Some 457 sources have been detected at 3 cm with 601 sources at 6 cm created from new high-sensitivity and resolution radio-continuum images of the SMC from Crawford et al. A series of new radio-continuum (lambda=20 cm) mosaic images focused on the NGC 300 galactic system were produced using archived observational data from the VLA and/or ATCA. These new images are both very sensitive (rms=60 microJy) and feature high angular resolution (<10"). The most prominent new feature is the galaxy's extended radio-continuum emission, which does not match its optical appearance. Using these newly created images a number of previously unidentified discrete sources have been discovered.
